After splitting two games with the Twins, the Cincinnati Reds (57-51) play host to the NL Central cellar-dwelling Pittsburgh Pirates (41-67). Tonight will be the first of 13 games the Reds play against the Pirates during the remainder of the season. With a win, the Reds can make up a half game on both the Brewers and the Padres, as neither team plays tonight.

Starting Pitchers

Name IP ERA xERA FIP xFIP WHIP K% BB%
Wil Crowe 71.2 5.40 5.18 5.64 4.85 1.51 20.8% 11.0%
Sonny Gray 76.0 4.26 3.66 3.82 3.32 1.38 29.0% 8.8%

PIRATES

Wil Crowe, the 23rd ranked prospect in the Pirates organization, made his major league debut for the Washington Nationals in 2020 and was shuttled back and forth between the alternate site and the big league team for most of September. The Nationals traded him and another player to the Pirates in December for Josh Bell, and he’s been in the Pirates rotation all season this year.

Crowe had a slow start to the 2021 season, giving up 15 runs in 22.1 innings in the month of April. However, he’s rebounded nicely and although his overall ERA doesn’t reflect it, he does have a 3.46 ERA in 26.0 innings in July. It’s both his lowest ERA and his highest number of innings all season. His most recent start saw him have the best game of his season thus far, pitching six innings of shut-out baseball, while allowing just one hit and striking out four. He did walk four batters, however.

Crowe has five pitches in his arsenal and will throw all of them to varying degrees of extent. He uses his four seam fastball most often at 39.1% and it averages about 93.1 mph. Crowe’s slider and changeup have the highest whiff rates, with his slider at 30.1% and his change up at 32.3%. Both pitches average around 85 mph, but he usually throws the slider to right-handed batters and the change up to left-handed batters.

REDS

Right-hander Sonny Gray bounced back from his disappointing performance against the Cardinals on July 25th at GABP with a seven strikeout, one-run performance in six innings at Citi Field in New York on Friday night. Contrary to what New York Yankees fans believe, he can pitch well in New York City.

Gray has actually pitched better on the road than at home. In 43.0 innings at GABP, he has a 5.23 ERA with nine home runs allowed, compared to a 3.00 ERA on the road. However, if you look at his splits across his entire career, for the most part, Gray’s always pitched better on the road than at home. This is nothing new for himy.

Gray’s overall strikeout percentage is slightly down from a year ago, when it was 30.6%. This could be because his whiff rates on each of his breaking and off speed pitches are down. For his curve ball, it’s down to 33.3 percent from 36.2 percent in 2020. And for his slider, it currently is at 39.3 percent, down from 47.2 percent in 2020. Nevertheless, he’s still spinning the ball at a good rate, as both his fastball spin and curve ball spin are in the 75th and 80th percentiles in the league.

News and Notes

He’s back! The Reds activated Nick Castellanos from the injured list today.

The rest of the players on the injured list could be back very soon as well.

Final Thoughts

The Reds are winning series and doing what they can to try to gain some ground back in the NL Central, but the Milwaukee Brewers are not cooperating by continuing to win. Entering play tonight, the Reds were still 7.5 games back of the Brewers. However, the Reds may have a chance to make up some ground this weekend as the Brewers play the NL West leading San Francisco Giants while the Reds play the Pirates. The Padres have been cooperating a little better, and the Reds are just four games back of the second wild card spot. Either way, here’s to hoping that the Reds can close the distance on one or both teams and these last two months of baseball get really fun in the Queen City.

I don’t care how bad you are, our bullpen can make you look good. They gotta show up, get right , and show out. No BS.

  2. RedsGettingBetter

Geno batting 8th tonight could mean the bench is near to him when Moustakas rejoins.

    • Melvin

That’s what I was thinking and that’s what should happen. If Moose was in there tonight instead of Saurez that would be a pretty good lineup for sure.

  3. Dennis Westrick

Who’s this Nick Castellanos guy? Secret weapon I hope! Welcome back Nick!

  4. JB

Hmm Suarez batting 8th. Could this be a sign that his replacement is coming? I doubt it with this organization. If you’re in it ,to win it, you play your best team to win. No matter how much you owe some players. This next week will get interesting when players come back. Will guys get benched or will they play because they make to much. Will Doolittle get the axe or will somebody else because Doolittle makes to much.

    • beelicker

More likely respectfully reflecting the hot Farmer’s drop from the #3 placement, RH batter Stephenson’s playing today so that Barnhart goes with Miley tomorrow and Naquin breaking up those 3 straight righties that leaves at the bottom of the order

  5. Bet on Red

These are must win games for the Reds here. Had our Muligan in game one with the twins. One positive is that if we are playing the Pirates there is no way that the Brewers are as well. lol

  6. Old-school

Nick senzel is batting lead off and playing CF again in AAA. Moose only played 3b in AAA . Nick Krall on MLB interview today said Reds feel really good going forward at the SS position . He said Farmer was doing a very good job offensively and defensively and a leader on the team. He said Barrero isnt ready yet but very close. He never mentioned Suarez other than to say when Moose got injured we moved him back

1.) Senzel will be primarily a CF.
    2.) Moose will be a 3b primarily.
3.) Suarez is going to sit primarily.

    Go reds

  7. dhmorgan

I had almost forgotten what a strong batting lineup looked like, but the one tonight looks like the best in quite a while.
Of course, that’s on paper: they still need to produce and Sonny Gray needs to have a better outing that his last two.

    • RedsMonk65

His last outing (Friday) was pretty good. Six innings, five hits, one run, seven strikeouts. And he got the win. The two outings prior to that game, however, were poor. So, let’s hope he has righted the ship for good.

    • Dennis Westrick

Sonny’s last outing was a “quality start” 6 innings with 1 earned run! He had an awful 1st inning but, with TB’s help, settled down and pitched 5 scoreless innings! And, yes, I am a huge Sonny Gray fan!

      • dhmorgan

You’re right. Somehow I missed that one.

  8. Dennis Westrick

Excellent opportunity to start cutting into the Brewer’s NL Central lead! Brewers idle tonight so, with a win, can trim a half game! Then, the Brewers host a 3-game series with the Giants while we continue playing the Pirates! Time for the BP to start doing their part to secure wins! That starts by NOT walking batters! Go Reds! Score early & often!

  9. Indy Red Man

Cashed the Rockies Over 5.5 easily today so took the Reds Over 5.5. Thats alot of runs though.

    Nice start $$$

    • Bet on Red

My First inning HRE over at 2.5 has cleared already. Need the Reds to win by 2 or more now.

  10. Old-school

    India upper deck power

    What cant he do?

  11. Bet on Red

India seems to have found his power

  12. Melvin

Poor base running again. Let the line drives to through is the rule.

  13. Melvin

If we get India, Winker, Casty, and Votto going at the same time that would be awesome. I wouldn’t want to be a pitcher having to face them.

    • Indy Red Man

Plus the alien that stole Kyle Farmer’s body

  14. Bet on Red

Suarez doesnt want the bench Oppo homer after a 9 pitch at bat

    • Melvin

It’s amazing how having someone breathing down your neck for playing time makes you a better player. The closer Moose and Senzel are to coming back the better Suarez gets. lol It’s no coincidence he’s being doing better lately. For some reason it tends to humble a guy and MAKES him adjust. lol

      • Melvin

oops again – “been” doing 🙂

  15. Bet on Red

I gotta think that Crowe is not long for this game which means we are going to get a look at their bullpen early on Game 1 of a series. Always good.

  16. Indy Red Man

Can I cash my Over here? This has been my 2nd best mlb season ever with my bets!

Geno frustrated me almost as much as anyone, but that is why you don’t give up on a dude that just put up a .930 ops 2 seasons ago and makes only $11 mil

    • Jim t

Would love to see him revert to his 2019 form for the last 2 months of this season.

  17. Bet on Red

BUT BUT BUT…… Joey Votto starting a new streak. This pitcher is done

  18. Indy Red Man

Playing the Pirates is everything I thought it could be. Its like playing a AAA team

  19. MBS

This looks like it’s going to get ugly for the Rats!

  20. Mark Moore

I tuned in just in time to see India in the first, then watched the other fireworks including that lovely little GABP shot by Votto.

Could just be an Everybody Hits, Everybody Scores kind of evening.

    • Broseph

Kinda makes up for that potential record-tying screamer Votto just missed in NY

    • JA

Just creating some cushion for Reds BP later on the game?

Let’s see this LU vs quality pitchers

  21. Mark Moore

And Farmer piles on. We’re just going with what Crowe gives us.

And I’m guessing Naquin is the last batter he faces.

    • JA

70 pitches in 2 innings for Crow …
      That’s inneficient!

  22. dhmorgan

So far this looks like a game where everyone can inflate their batting averages.

  23. Melvin

I think the Brewers having already played the Pirates 16 times is a major factor in them being 7 1/2 games ahead.

    Brewers 12-4
    Reds 5-1

    Difference between 1st and 2nd

  24. Mark Moore

Bat on the shoulder to end the inning. No excuse there, Tyler.

  25. Old-school

    Pirates are 2017 reds
    Rookie Davis
    Jackson Stephens
    Deck McGuire
    Asher Wojo

    Reds need to
Sweep 4 games and get to 10 under
    Pirates awful
Inciarte signing doesnt bode Well for akiyama or Aquino or Naquin

    • Bet on Red

I dont think so. He really fell off a cliff this year. At best I would say its a lotto ticket

      • Mark Moore

I was thinking lottery ticket that plays a solid CF. If it works, it works. If not, no big deal.

  26. Mark Moore

Crowe is hitting? I can’t believe he’d actually come back out for the 3rd inning. Maybe they are conserving their PH’ers?

    • JA

If I were his manager probably would do the same.
Those cases you need to make suffer your starter for not showing up on the game, and also save some innings to your RPs

  27. MBS

I’m probably more excited by the Inciarte signing than I should be.

    • 2020ball

Instantly the best defensive OF in our system, good signing.

    • Arthur

I think it is a terrific signing – he needs to be in the game every time Reds have a lead late in the game.

Bringing a gold-glove caliber defender to this team’s outfield, which is a dumpster fire defensively, is a very good move.

Get him up here and let’s get him in these games when we have a lead.

  28. Old-school

Crowe with a 47 pitch 6 run 2nd inning and hits for himself.

    Pirates arent fooling around

They are catching the orioles and Dbacks

  29. Mark Moore

I’m less upset by Geno taking that last pitch instead of the ugly swings at stuff down there … probably boosted by the oppo HR he provided earlier.

  30. RedsMonk65

Nice to see the Red comfortably ahead. But it’s only the 4th. Keep driving in those runs. As we all know, when Gray is finished, we may need them!

    • Melvin

I think three or four more runs ought to be safe for “Doolittle time”. That way we can keep our other EIGHT relievers fresh for next game. lol

      • Dennis Westrick

No lead is safe with Bell making BP decisions!

      • Melvin

I’m factoring in the that if we’re ahead 11-0 and lose it we should be able to score some more against this Pirates pitching if need be…..hopefully. lol

  31. Melvin

Winker has improved his ability, at least a little, to track balls.

    • Mark Moore

      I’d agree with that perspective.

  32. RedsMonk65

Listening on the MLB audio feed. I can hear Sonny’s exclamations with every single pitch. Sounds like he’s saying something naughty, but I know it’s only the exertion. Don’t recall hearing that same thing from any other Reds pitcher — at least on the radio.

  33. Mark Moore

We seem to be letting Crowe off the hook just a little bit. This will be his last inning. Let’s make it a memorable one for him, k?

  34. Bet on Red

This is a little too early for playing a run for an out

  35. Melvin

Suarez didn’t help himself for playing time there.

  36. Mark A Verticchio

This is going in the wrong direction.

  37. Dennis Westrick

We just can’t have an easy win!

  38. Mark A Verticchio

Thought he might go 7, now 5 at best.

  39. 2020ball

Not sure what Barry’s talking about, they play in the shift all the time, they aren’t in the same place and the same defensive covers apply. Just a mistake on Geno’s part.

  40. Dennis Westrick

I hate to say/see it! Get that award winning bullpen up!

  41. Dennis Westrick

Pirates have scored 2 runs so far without hitting the ball out of the infield?

  42. Bet on Red

Alright the reds better get 4 back when they get back in for the bottom of this inning.

  43. Mark Moore

Not happy with this. Not happy at all.

  44. Melvin

Get this last out. Sheesh. The Pirates can win. It’s not impossible.

  45. Old-school

Eugenio suarez plays 3b but doesnt cover 3b with a runner on a 3b and a grounder to votto who is in? What’s he playing? Thats a little league play.

    Please get Moose back

    Suarez is flat lazy

    Jogs on the bases
    Hits .175
Strikes out #2 in the league
Hits a HR once a week
Makes one physical error a week and 3 mental errors a week and slowest laziest base runner on the team

    • Dennis Westrick

Other than that he’s an outstanding player! That’s sarcasm for the sarcasm challenged watching the dumpster fire that’s our current 3rd baseman!

    • Melvin

I agree. He’s playing better but not good enough.

  46. Mark A Verticchio

Horrible job by Gray, given 7 runs and goes 5, giving up 4. The 3rd baseman didn’t help at all. Offense needs to go back to work or this could fall apart.

  47. 2020ball

Very impressed with Farmer, huge boost to the team since he’s been starting.

  48. Bet on Red

fail by the reds fanbase on the Naquin no HR. The ball was over the line enough for it to not be fan interference. Gotta help the team fans

  49. dhmorgan

Naquin hasn’t hit a home run in forever and was robbed on that one.
    Good play, darn it.

    • RedsMonk65

Didn’t get to see it yet, but the way it was described by Brantley, it sounds like the catch was a work of art. Too bad for us.

      • 2020ball

It was an easy robbery, but great defense nonetheless

  50. RedsMonk65

Sonny suddenly hit a brick wall. Not good. He’s out now. Need to score more runs and cross your fingers for the bullpen.

    • 2020ball

Most of the balls hit that inning were weak contact, and he wasn’t issuing walks. Geno’s mistake probably isnt an error but it should be as it left an out on the field. Some hard contact in one out of 5 innings really doesnt scream hitting a wall nor him being horrible as another mentioned above.

  51. Bet on Red

ML unavailable most likely, Cessa on a low pitch count. AG and Brach also used yesterday. Givins should be used in the 9th

    • RedsMonk65

Buckle up! Could be a rough ride….

  52. Dennis Westrick

Now we need that highly efficient Reds bullpen to hold a 3 run lead for 4 innings! No problem right?

  53. Old-school

Shogo akiyama is a .541 OPS 5 th inning pinch hitter. No double switch.

Same day Reds sign Ender Inciarte

Akiyama’s days are numbered. They have zero confidence in him as a player

Suarez days as an everyday 3b are over

    • 2020ball

not sure why you’d double switch when the pitchers spot is coming up in the inning, it just accelerates you getting back to it, which is the opposite of why you’d do it

      • Indy Red Man

I’ll take Tucker with a 3 run lead any day of the week. Much better defensively. I’d take AA in the OF somewhere too

      • 2020ball

well… sure of course, but you dont have to double switch them in. Nothing wrong with a straight substitution for D

      • Old-school

Nothing to do with double switches or managerial accounting

Everything to do with Shogo Akiyama has zero role on this team and is reduced to a 5 th inning pinch hitter siftball slap hitter the same day the Reds sign a multi GG center fielder to go to AAA…. Where Shogo cant go contactually

Shogo’s stock has never been this low

      • 2020ball

Oh ok, I misread. He’s fine as a bench player, if he wasn’t around I’d love Inciarte in that role. His stock is indeed low.

      • 2020ball

And I’m not sure if Shogo isnt optionable or not, he might actually have an option

      • 2020ball

He probably can be optioned, less than 5 years on a 40-man

      • 2020ball

ok nevermind, cannot be sent to minors without his consent, per Cots

    • Indy Red Man

$8 mil guaranteed next year. Thats not big Bobs style to eat that much cash. I’ll have to see it to believe it

    • 2020ball

I dont see them eating money on akiyama since he’s still a plus def OF and probably better than inciarte overall because his bat might actually be better. I do agree Suarez’s spot is in jeopardy.

  54. Arthur

Don’t want to be a jinx, but I like Hoffman as a reliever much better than Hoffman as a starter.

Pretty sure he is able to throw 2-3 innings in relief.

  55. Mark Moore

That’s one down. Time to play some crooked number add-on.

  56. dhmorgan

Checked swings are one of the hardest calls to make. I’d guess that the umpires get it right 50% of the time.
No good, but it is what it is.

  57. Mark A Verticchio

The offense needs to pick it up, nothing since the 2nd inning.

  58. Indy Red Man

Hoffman pitching for a roster spot too. He’s definitely better in the pen. It could make for some tough decisions soon?

  59. Mark Moore

Need 9 outs with no drama. Bats have gone to sleep. Need Cerano and Jobu to wake up bats.

  60. Indy Red Man

Weird play with Geno/Votto on that dribbler. I get that Geno got caught zoning out, but the 1B has to take the out there! He could’ve just walked the guy down when he saw Geno wasn’t there and got the out while holding him at 3B. You take the bird in the hand rather then worry about a throw there

    • Mark Moore

Weird is the only way to describe it.

    • 2020ball

I’d react the same way if I saw a way to cut down the lead runner, very unfortunate he didnt have a guy to throw to on third. Getting an out after another guy making a silly mistake is not as easy as it sounds, that usually takes some elite defensive talents that Votto doesnt have.

      • Indy Red Man

Yeah, but it was like the guy was playing chicken w/Joey and Joey blinked first. Its not like Joey went to his right on the ball? He was right on the line and the hitter has to come to him eventually.

We need Hoffman to step up here!

      • 2020ball

He ran at the runner to force a rundown and he was able to just walk back to third because there was no one there to throw to. And I’m pretty sure he was 6 ft from the line at least. I’d have to see it again to be sure I guess, but I dont think that was Joey’s fault at all.

  61. Mark Moore

I didn’t realize our RP’s could pitch a 2nd inning. I thought that was the rule.

Of course, as I type this, Hoffman starts 2-0.

    • 2020ball2

I dont really get why everyone is harping on this, Bell has used guys for 2 innings plenty this year.

      • Indy Red Man

No he hasn’t. Its usually 1-1-1-1

      • RedAlert

Not !!!!! Dude have you really been watching the Reds this year ?

      • 2020ball

same question back at ya. Antone pitched 3 sometimes.

      • 2020ball

Sims has a few 2 inn games too. Maybe he’s reluctant to run his worse options out there for 2, which I think is probably prudent.

      • 2020ball

Brach has a few 1+ inn, one 2 inn. Santillan was used for 1+ once in the pen in the short time he was there. I’m sure there are others.

This is of course ignoring that other managers rarely do it either.

    • beelicker

There is a rational explanation for this, a bonfied deliberate methodology by which to maximize such a collection of castoffs, marginal/transistional role pitchers, physical and mental rehab projects as it appears the Reds have deliberately collected: “teams that use a parade of relievers who enter the game from the sixth inning onward and throw the hell out of the ball, knowing they’ll probably max out at one inning at a time. (The Yankee bullpen is a prime example.) You might call these pitchers >>> OMGs: One-inning Max-effort Guys <<< They can be incredibly, game-changingly effective, but they aren’t necessarily all that skilled."

… this also explains the egregious preponderance of BBs, as you understandably sacrifice some control for gains in velocity … it also requires and team's overall philosophical commitment to the system … i recall recent Cardinals' teams that collexcted a raft of high 9os flamethrowing *young* bullpen arms, whereas the Reds are more doing it with scrap heap gems & rehabbing retreads

"In fact, the whole problem is that OMGs are a renewable resource, with no real constraints on supply. Teams can take failed starters with two decent pitches and, after some weeding out, turn them into OMGs who will strike out 25 or 30 percent of the batters they face, provided they only have to throw one inning every second or third day. It also yields rosters that are grossly imbalanced relative to the amount of value that these relievers generate. According to FanGraphs, relief pitchers accounted for only about 9 percent of the value (in wins above replacement) that all position players and pitchers created last year. And yet, they occupy about 25 percent of roster slots."

Here's an article which discusses these issues at length: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/relievers-have-broken-baseball-we-have-a-plan-to-fix-it/

      • Old-school

        Reds bullpen definitely OMG

        Givens looks good

  62. Melvin

Need to take it off of cruise control….especially the offense.

  63. RedAlert

I don’t trust Hoffman at all !!! Playing with fire Bell !!!

  64. Dennis Westrick

    If it’s not a walk it’s a HBP freebie!

  65. Mark Moore

Once again the inconsistency of the strike zone borders on maddening. Sometimes within the same AB.

  66. Indy Red Man

Good job Hoff…..lets get atleast 1 here!

  67. Mark Moore

Pitcher’s best friend … and now we need 6.

    Add on please, guys?

  68. Dennis Westrick

Pitcher’s best friend, the old DP! Lucky, lucky, lucky! Doolittle time! Right?

  69. Old-school

    Stephenson injured?
    If so- barrero needs promoted

    • Mark Moore

      So he can catch?

I know, you mean Farmer would then be the back-up catcher. Since he hasn’t strapped on the gear for some time, that’s probably not the best option.

      Hope TySteve is OK.

      • 2020ball

I’m personally not moving Farmer off SS, he’s more than earned it

      • beelicker

Extended catching is probably not all that compatible with Farmer’s apparent abdominal herniation issues either

  70. Indy Red Man

Hunter Greene 6 ip, 1 hit shutout so far with 9 Ks/1 walk

Stephenson actually hurt in some way. Not good

    • Indy Red Man

Call me crazy, but I’d take a dude for an inning or 2 throwing 102

      • Mark Moore

I recall when the Rays called up Price late in the year to pitch in the BP. He still ended up a starter, so it can be done. What we don’t want to have happen is for anyone to fall in love with the stupid idea of Greene being a “closer”. IMO, that’s a formula for disaster all the way around.

      • 2020ball

I’m fine using him in the pen, but I’d probably do it in September at the earliest. Would like to get him work on the other stuff that isnt 102, in the ML pen he’s just gonna use 2 pitches.

  71. Mark A Verticchio

Every time Larkin and Sadek start saying what a great offense the Reds have they pull one of these numbers. not that 7 runs shouldn’t be enough, it’s called add on runs.

  72. Indy Red Man

Greene 6.1 shutout, 10Ks. Replaced by Sims

    • Arthur

And he did it on 80 pitches.

Ima thinking the young man is ready for The Show.

Remember how few innings he threw last year. Got to take that into account. Rushing him doesn’t do us any good.

      • Indy Red Man

He’s on a pitch count. Nobody is rushing him

  73. Dennis Westrick

Did I miss the memo? Is it required that our RP walk the first batter of the inning?

    • JB

Ball four was a strike. Not really sure what the ump was looking at.

    • Bet on Red

yea thats on the ump not on him.

  74. Indy Red Man

These adjective umps. Worst I’ve ever seen this year

    • Mark Moore

I keep wondering how we can top it every single game (or so it seems).

    • RedAlert

Agreed – they have stunk it up for most part . Bring on the robots !

  75. Dennis Westrick

Plus, he had the first batter in a 1-2 count!

  76. Reddawg2012

It would appear that at the very least Justin Wilson is willing to throw strikes and attack the zone. Maybe it’s just because it’s the pirates, but it’s refreshing to see out of the bullpen.

  77. Dennis Westrick

Thank God for the double play!

  78. Indy Red Man

Wilson looks really good so far! Better then AG or Doolittle

  79. Bet on Red

Alright, 3 run lead into the ninth. Do we run givins out there or are they sticking with hembree

    • Indy Red Man

HH has been scored on in 4 straight. Surely even Bell can figure that one out

      • 2020ball

If its 3 straight RHB, I’m fine with HH

    • Mark Moore

They said Givens was warming up. AA batting, so somebody else is coming out.

    • Bet on Red

They just said it, Givins is up in the pen

  80. Eddie

It’s great to see pitcher pitched a two inning from the bullpen and Wilson did well and now it’s greats to see givens as the closer tonight which he had done with Baltimore in his early career. Curious how signing braves Cf ender tonight on a minor contract will turn into. Hope Stephenson okay since he left the game tonight.

  81. Indy Red Man

SD plays Arizona (7) and Miami (3) in their next 10 games. I suggest we go 8-2 to stay in range. We’re only 3 out in the loss column now so if we stay within 3-4 by September then their schedule versus our schedule should let us get there (or tie?) A 1 game playoff for the 1 game playoff)))

    • 2020ball

Gonna be a fun finish, really happy to be watching the Reds pushing for that last spot right now.

  82. Mark A Verticchio

You just can’t score 7 in the first 2 innings and then basically not show up for 6 innings, sad.

    • Mark Moore

Very concerning, especially when they pitched Crowe for 2 more innings.

    • 2020ball

Needless negativity in my mind. Can’t we just enjoy a win for once?

  83. Old-school

I really cant support Suarez as a reds regular . Yes- he hit a gabp home run against a pirates rookie and he will do that once a week .

But hes a terrible hitter who guesses and forfeits 9/10 at bats
Blind squirrels find nuts. A broken clock is right twice a day

But he also jogs to first base when doubles are to be had. Hes slowest runner and and makes physical and mental errors at 3b every day .

Trade him this off season for a resin bag and a A flyer

    Moose is our 3b

    • Indy Red Man

Geno is younger. Geno’s .930 2019 is 100 points higher then anything Moose has done, but Moose did play in a huge KC park. IDk? Lets see how Moose looks? Geno easier to move for sure at $11 mil vs $18

  84. Indy Red Man

Givens 8 straight scoreless appearances coming in. Scored on twice (2 er total) in last 18 appearances. Walks are high though

  85. Mark Moore

Welcome back, Nick. Nice track on that fly ball.

    Save for Givens!

It’s a good night for our Reds. I can go to bed happy.

  86. Bet on Red

There we go. Givins locks it down for a one two three. Reds gain a half game in both races.

  87. RedsMonk65

Nice pickup by the bullpen for a change. Glad to see some of the new guys (plus Hoffman) pick up the slack. Reds win despite the bats mostly going to sleep after the big inning.

  88. Indy Red Man

If anyone can track RLN….I was talking Givens in May or June. He’s our closer imo because Antone is more capable of getting 4-6-7 outs

  89. Tomn

Any word on what happened to Stephenson?

  90. RedsMonk65

Hope Stephenson is OK. That could be an issue. Need catching depth, and I don’t see Farmer leaving the SS position as long as he’s playing this well.

    • 2020ball

Just call up a back-up for TB if needed, easy-peasy

    • Dennis Westrick

      Beginning to like that guy!

      • Indy Red Man

3-2 changeup to the first guy for a dribbler. He got all 3 outs on changeups the other day. He’s not your normal high leverage guy which works to his advantage

  91. RedsMonk65

Stephenson left with a hamstring cramp, per Mark Sheldon. Taken out as a precaution.
