The Reds meet the Mets today in a matinee quick turnaround to close out the series and  a seven game road trip.  A Reds victory will clinch a 2-1 series win and give them a 5-2 mark on the road trip. Game time at Citi Field in NYC is 1:10pm EDT.

Starting Pitchers

Righthanders Vladimir Gutierrez and Marcus Stroman square off at the game’s beginning. Both started a game in the recent Reds/ Mets series at GABP; but, they didn’t face each other. Gutierrez went just 4 innings and allowed 6 runs (all earned) in the July 19 game won 15-11 by the Mets. Interestingly enough however, Gutierrez was not charged with the loss. Two days later Stroman pitched a masterful 8 shutout innings as the Mets cruised to a 7-0 win.

Vladimir Gutierrez

Gutierrez start will be his twelfth MLB start for the Reds in his premier season. He has compiled a 4.75/ 5.88 ERA/FIP but garnered a reputation for being a battler on the mound. Gutierrez throws his 4 seam fastball just under 50% of the time at an average speed of about 93MPH. He uses his slider (83 MPH) and curve (77 MPH) each just over 20% of the time. He also throws a changeup (low 80’s) about 10% of the time.

Gutierrez needs to improve his K rate (16%) and lower his BB rate (10.5%) if he hopes to succeed long term as a MLB starter.  He currently allow more flyballs than grounders. His prospects would also figure to improve if he could reverse these numbers. To this end, he has been working on developing a sinker. It is yet to appear in his stats; but, keep an eye and ear out for reports about it.

Marcus Stroman

Injuries at the top of the Mets rotation have pushed Marcus Stroman to the forefront. He has compiled an ERA/FIP comparison of 2.62/3.43 in 22 prior 2021 starts. Luck appears to be more with than against him to date in 2021. Stroman mixes a repertoire of at least 4 pitches each used for ~15% or more of his offerings. His primary pitch is  a 4 seam fastball (50%/ 92 MPH). However secondarily, he uses 3 different pitch about 15%-20% of the time each. Those are his cut fastball (91MPH) Slider (87MPH) and curve (84 MPH). He will also show an 85 MPH changeup about 7% of the time.

Stroman doesn’t strike out a lot of hitters (20%) but neither does he walk many (6%). Add in a combined groundball and infield fly rate of 60%; and, it is easy to see why he is having a successful season.

Pitching Tale Of The Tape

Vladimir Gutierrez 4.75 5.88 1.43 1.78 10.5% 15.8%
Marcus Stroman 2.62 3.43 1.11 0.77 5.7 20.5%

Heath Hembree and Michael Lorenzen threw 20 and 15 pitches respectively last night. In addition Lorenzen threw 8 pitches on Friday night. Given the short turnaround, I rate both as doubtful for today. Mychal Givens and Amir Garrett are probably also on a short leash due to moderately high 3 day pitch counts.

Trevor May and Edwin Diaz threw 23 and 19 pitches respectively Saturday night, Given the quick turnaround they maybe unavailable. Jeurys Familia threw 15 pitches Saturday and has a 3 day pitch count of 29. He may also be questionable for today.

Hopefully today off along with the team off day Monday will give JV enough of a rest to supercharge him for a run deep into August before he needs another break. BTW, the next scheduled off day after Tuesday is 20 games on down the Road.

News And Notes

Very Good News

Even better news

Closing Thoughts

Like the sands in an hourglass….. The Reds let another game slip away from them Saturday night. The better news is that the Padres and Brewers  also both lost; but, then again that means opportunity went by the way with the squandered near victory. Nonetheless it is a new day with a new chance for the Reds to start a new winning streak in a new month. GO REDS!

I’m not suggesting this actually happened, but if the front office had hired a manager with instructions to lose as many games as possible without making it TOO obvious that he was trying to lose as many games as possible, that manager’s decisions would look a lot like David Bell’s decisions.

    • wkuchad

Plenty of valid criticism on Bell, but unfortunately it gets mixed in with constant nonsense like this.

I think you all forget how bad Price was. And Dusty’s in-game management was next level bad at times.

I’ll take Bell any day over either of those. Even with the horrible Doolittle decision last night.

      • Indy Red Man

I agree completely on Dusty/Price, but does that mean Bell gets a pass? I’m sure the next few German chancellors were better then the one with the short mustache, but thats not really a good barometer.

Twice he put Osich into the 8th with a lead and then put HH into the game AFTER they blew the lead. Who does that? All he had to do last night was walk Smith and then its HH (.560 ops vs righties) vs Kevin .216 Pillar. If they pinch-hit then Doolittle vs a lefty thats weaker vs lefties. Smith rakes lefties.

These things are not brain surgery

      • J

Ah, the old “Bell isn’t the worst manager ever, so it’s unfair to point out how many times he’s made it harder for this team to win” argument. I find it unconvincing. I’m of the belief that it ought to be possible to hire a manager whose decisions can ALWAYS be justified in some logical way. Bell fails to meet even that low standard.

      • Doug Gray

your initial post is just as bad if not worse. You are saying the only way he could be worse is if he purposely tried losing. So perhaps chill out on calling out someone else.

Last night’s decision to bring in Doolittle in that situation is the first time he’s made a move that I just couldn’t understand. There’s been plenty I’ve disagreed with, but on some level I could at least get where the move was coming from. Last night wasn’t it.

      • RojoB

Price had nowhere near this much offensive talent to work with so we’ll never know how he compares to DBell

      • Indy Red Man

I’ll tell you another thing. Dusty drove me nuts, but they didn’t have guys thrown out needlessly EVERY ADJECTIVE DAY!!!!!!! Rolen and BP took pride in the teams baserunning. Joey has been 50% better this year, but I don’t know what that was last night? Stephenson has been clutch all year and they take the bat out of his hands.

This isn’t Bell’s first year. At what point is he held responsible?

      • J

I think some of you aren’t quite managing to process my post. I said if you wanted to undermine a team while not making it *obvious* you were doing it, you would make a lot of the decisions Bell makes. This means there will always be some sort of way to plausibly claim the decisions could “make sense,” sorta-kinda, even if they appear to ignore statistics, recent history, etc. Hitting Suárez 5th or 6th day after day after day, for example, when he was doing absolutely nothing offensively day after day after day, made no sense in any statistical or logical way. There might be some way to imagine Bell always has something clever in mind when he makes these counterintuitive (and almost always counterproductive) decisions on a daily basis, but it should be possible to find a manager who doesn’t force us all to tell stories or fall back on “he’s not as bad as so-and-so” in order to support him.

    • burtgummer01

One of the dumbest things ever posted here. The Reds were predicted to battle the Pirates for last place but here they are in second in a playoff battle

  2. RedsGettingBetter

When did Eugenio Suárez get a off-day last time?

    • JA

Didn’t you hear it’s mandatory to play Geno?
There is a clause somewhere around…

  3. Dennis Westrick

Chalking today’s game up in the L column before the first pitch! No NIck, No Votto! Typical day game after night game white flag lineup by Bell. Maybe someone needs to tell him there are only 57 games left! Times a wastin’ and I ain’t getting any younger or more patient!

  4. Dennis Westrick

Does anyone have the stats on how many games the Reds bullpen has inherited a lead (or tie) only to have the Reds lose?

    • Indy Red Man

I think they’ve lost 15 games when ahead after the 5th or later

  5. JA

Reds chances for a win today passes for keeping the mets in los score.
VlAd could do it, but will need help. An MlB team needs to score at least 5 runs to really aspire to win a game.

  6. Bet on Red

Today was one I had in the lost column which meant last night’s loss with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth hurt more. Vlad is a good Pitcher but Stroman is next level. Maybe the fact that they just saw him will give them an advantage going into this but I think the reality is that we lost a chance yesterday

    • Indy Red Man

Tough one yesterday. Miley’s bad was inches from a 2 run single. Joey was inches from a 2 run HR. Stuff happens. Have to get after it today! I’ve had Stroman a bunch of times in fantasy bb. He’s good, but he’s hittable.

      • Bet on Red

he is, and he was in the zone in Cinci. I just hoping that he is off it today

  7. Bet on Red

Nick C hitting at all, let alone homers is a good sign.

  8. Old-school

Reds have a severe roster crunch coming.

Castellanos, Senzel, Moose and Sims are all back on the 26 man roster soon.

Schrock and freeman for sure would go back to AAA.

But who is next position player and pitcher? Senzel hasn’t played SS at AAA so far and he’s starting in CF today.

Unless Farmer takes an IL stent and Geno Suarez is back at SS.

    • Bet on Red

considering he is playing hurt a farmer IL stint is not out the question. He is however playing very well for being hurt

  9. Mark Moore

Tall order to win today. Good that JV gets a day off. Wish Geno had one at some point.

Need 5 or ideally 6 from Vlad.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Agreed. My vibe is that the Reds are a clear underdog today based on the starting pitcher matchup and the changes to the lineup. But you never know!

      • RojoB

Stroman has got to be licking his chops. He’s got a chance at pitching a monster game today.

  10. Gpod

Bad time for Winker to fall back into a slump, 1 for 10 in the series & not hitting the ball hard at all

    • Old-school

      .381 over his last 10
Games and singles in the first

  11. RojoB

So why is Naquin not this year’s Derek Dietrich? I have forgotten

    • Old-school

If you look at the splits in July and after the ASG, Naquin/Shogo/Suarez and Barnhart are all struggling.

      • RojoB

Here’s to all of them rallying in August!

  12. VaRedsFan

So if days off are scheduled several days in advance, and there was a choice between Saturday and Sunday, why wasn’t Votto sitting vs a lefty yesterday so he could play vs the righty today?

Did Bell call an audible because of streak? If so, that’s probably the first noticeable one, or just lack of foresight planning.

    • TyGuy88

This is the part I don’t understand. Why have Votto start against a lefty one game and sit against a righty the next game?

    • Mark Moore

The consecutive game HR thing? Or just day after night after a long stretch?

    • BZ

Also, why not just schedule the day off during the stretch of games against Minnesota and Pittsburgh next week? What is the difference between being off against a division leader today where he is needed or being off against a bottom-dweller on Tuesday where he probably isn’t? Both result in two days off. The Reds can’t afford to just give up games.

  13. Bet on Red

So what we are saying is that Mendoza is better than the Mendoza line?

    • Mark Moore

Soon to be the Suarez line …

  14. TyGuy88

The Reds need to get healthy quick. Currently some big holes in the lineup and bullpen and a large hill to climb in the standings. Geno and Naquin need to be bench guys at this point and Doolittle should only be used in mop up.

  15. kevinz

    Early on of course.
Feels like need a struggling player.
    To make a impact.
    Go reds.

  16. Bet on Red

Already doing better then the last start with Stroman, 2 hits. Just keep on keeping on

  17. Mark A Verticchio

Winker goes into these mini slums and a team chasing can’t have one of it’s better hitters doing that, nor can they have their manager bench their hottest hitter with a day of tomorrow. I have watched almost every game this year and I wonder how many losses can be pinned on some crazy Bell decision.

    • Arthur

      That’s excellent pitch efficiency.

How good would Tyler Mahle be if he could come close to that?? Even just once in a while.

    • dhmorgan

It is on my end. Almost a constant freeze frame.
Somehow the Reds scored, although I don’t know how.

      • Mark Moore

        All good with my feed.

Schrock found the RF fence line

  18. Bet on Red

ok so getting Schrock into the lineup was not a bad idea

    • JB

I dont think anybody has a problem with him in the lineup. Its who he is in for.

  19. Mark Moore

You have to send him. Too bad he didn’t start from second like I thought might have been possible given how slowly that deflected ball got to their LF’er and back in.

    • VaRedsFan

Mets announcers said the same thing….would have been to 2nd easily if had just hustled.

    • Bet on Red

yea, I like the send. Forced the Mets to make the play, which they did, but could have just of easily as not

  20. Tom Mitsoff

Just an observation — that ball Suarez hit deflected off the glove of Baez and came to rest in no-man’s-zone in left field. It would have been a clear double if Suarez was busting it down the line. Had he been at second, he would have scored easily on Naquin’s hit.

  21. wkuchad

Could Suarez made it to 2nd on his hit?

    • Old-school

My problem is he didnt even try. He left the box jogging and never gave it a chance.

Vlad has given the Reds some needed SP this year when his number called

      • RojoB

That warrants a benching but it won’t happen

  22. Bet on Red

Vlad having himself a start. Hyper efficent both with pitch count and with pitch usage. We might have been complaining about nothing here

    • Mark Moore

Definitely impressing so far. Defense keeping up behind him. Really need some more crooked numbers (as always).

  23. Arthur

I believe a glaring team weakness of this team is the total lack of team speed. Of course, they can’t steal bases. But their lack of speed goes far beyond stolen bases. Their outfield defense is poor because none of those guys can really run except Shogo, and he hasn’t hit well enough to justify a starting spot. . (I will take a moment to recognize AA’s nice catch a moment ago.). They don’t take an extra base – they don’t go first to third on a base hit, and they don’t score from second on a hit.

Watching the team run the bases is like watching Jonathan India and 8 catchers. Eight slow catchers.

    • Mark Moore

Maybe not 8 catchers … but I hear what you are saying and generally agree. A lot of average speed guys and when the lack of hustle (like Suarez) shows, that just makes it worse. I’m in the camp that says we should be up 2-0 right now (or maybe more without that out), but instead we’re relying on a stellar outing from a young pitcher (who is showing that at the moment) to carry us against a better team top to bottom on a Sunday afternoon. Pretty tall order if you ask me.

  24. BZ

43 pitches through 4 innings. Mahle calls that a solid first inning haha

  25. Mark Moore

This going right after hitters that I’m seeing … is that the normal way to approach starting pitching? I mean, isn’t “nibbling” the standard protocol? Asking for a friend …

  26. Bet on Red

Alright, so no history today. Let’s go get the win. Getting a win on Stroman, the same day that they are not going to sign their draft pick, on the same day the reds pitcher announcers explained to sadak to stop jinxing no-hitters would be great.

    Say that 5 times fast

    • Mark Moore

Sorry, I won’t apologize for Sadak at all. I really hope he doesn’t get the gig next year and beyond. In his trying too hard, it just comes off as inane chatter too often for me. The rest of this is just piling on to me (and rightly so).

  27. Mark Moore

I’m not unhappy that the “no-hitter pressure” is off Vlad now. The win is thing we’re after. I think Vlad gets that.

  28. Indy Red Man

Vlad is dealing today! When he can dial up 95 then he’s pretty good because his off speed is solid.

Old School….don’t rip my head off, but I’m not sure Senzel is an upgrade over Schrock! That kid can hit! Nice easy swing that plays with the sundeck/short porch in Gabp. He was going for the cycle in May when he got hurt w/the Reds. Of course they could use Senzel in CF if he could stay healthy.

    • Mark Moore

I think that’s the benefit to Senzel. Potential to play pretty much anywhere.

    • JB

I like schrock as well but let’s give him a few more at bats before we decide he is better.

    • Old-school

Ive been wrong before.I didnt think Farmer deserved a roster spot on a playoff team, let alone starting at SS. The guy is a gamer and fun to watch and competing his tail off, like many of his teammates.

Ill still think Senzel will finally stay healthIy and take off. I’m not a fortune teller though. At least we get to watch the Reds playing relevant baseball in august with a likeable team.

Raise your hand if thought the Reds would run Stroman early and Shrock and Farmer/Winker hustling out that extra base would help get it done.

  29. Bet on Red

winker heard the comments about lack of hustle obviously

  30. Mark Moore

Sometimes being a little lucky pays off. And nice hustle to end up on 2nd after that little carom kind of died out there.

  31. Mark Moore

Now we’re cooking. Fly ball from TySteve adds on.

    • Mark Moore

Just like we drew it up here at RLN

  32. Bet on Red

Sims with a shakey first inniing in Louisville, didnt give up any runs but that is more to the D behind him with 2H and a BB.

    Kyle Farmer turning heads everywhere

    • Bet on Red

correction, the game is being played in Iowa city

  33. Jeffery Stroupe

Farmer not belong on major league roster….kinda makes you think about comments

  34. Mark Moore

Schrock is definitely making a case as to why he should stay up when others start to come back. And he has the versatility we could use for a run at it.

  35. Arthur

That is why Ty Steve is going to be a valuable ball player – he will be an RBI machine. He puts the ball in play with runners in scoring position.

    Excellent situational hitting right there.

    • Mark Moore

Catcher, 1B, sometimes DH, PH on days off. I’m really high on the kid.

      • Indy Red Man

Yeah rookies add power & strength as they mature, but taking the ball the other way and hitting line drives is the hard part and he’s got that down! He doesn’t pop up really.

      • Arthur

Agree completely. I believe he can be a middle-of-the-order hitter on a good team.

And they need to find ways to get him out there almost every day.

  36. Mark Moore

Is it too sad to say at least Geno didn’t whiff or look at a 3rd strike?

    • Bet on Red

isolated that at bat wasn’t horrible Just got under a good pitch and got it in play. As a whole though…. yea

      • Mark Moore

        Basically had the same thought.

    • Indy Red Man

5 for last 23, double, 2 hrs, 4 rbis, 2 walks. Major heater for Geno. He feels Moose/Senzel nearby

      • Bet on Red

moose another hit at least today. looking to see if they are going to let them play the whole nine today. If so roster could look completely different tuesday

  37. Mark Moore

Nice heads up by Schrock. Let’s see if the Punisher can do his thing somehow, some way here and add to the lead.

    • RedsMonk65

Yes, we could use a Laugher for a change.

  38. Bet on Red

I admit it. I totally thought that we were going to be victims of an 8 inning Stroman performance. Reds showed up though. Fighting the best of pitchers and running off a player who will be a playoff starter. never been happier to be wrong

    • Indy Red Man

I told you. His lifetime era is like 3.66. He’s pretty good, but no better then a Mahle type. If Geno didn’t get thrown out, his numbers would really look shaky today

Wow, Mets didn’t even make a double switch there, guess the RP is in for 1 more out only.

    • RojoB

See- the thing is that we Reds fans have been conditioned to now think double switches are a frequent thing

Guess I forget David Bell doesn’t manage the Mets.

  40. RedsMonk65

Tough choice here. I guess you have to bat Gutti, the way he is pitching. Normally, I’d PH for him in this situation. But he’s only thrown 50 some pitches and has been spot-on. Fingers crossed….

  41. RedsMonk65

Wow, their reliever walks in a run on four pitches — and our pitcher to boot! Nice to see the shoe on the other foot….

  42. Mark Moore

    Did we just see that?

Time for India to show everybody why he’s going to be the NL RoY!

  43. Old-school

Oh boy, Vlad walks with the bases loaded and the Mets fans arent happy.

  44. Randy in Chatt

Jim, Doug or anyone. I am looking at the Reds’ 40 man off the mlb website and, to me, it looks like they are sitting at 39 players (one open spot). The one player that is a question mark is Jared Solomon who has not pitched since 2019. They don’t have him earmarked for the 60 DL but in his personal transaction page, his last transaction IS him being placed on the 60 DL.

If that is correct, there should be 1 spot open for the 40 man.

We have 3 position players coming back off the 60 DL soon. Hanger-oners look to be: R Alaniz, S Doolittle, M Feliz, R O’Brien, C Perez, M Freeman and Shogo

What do you know about the Jared Solomon situation and spots on the 40 man?

  45. Arthur

What in the world??? I must have overslept.

Is it really Christmas already?? Because that is nothing but a gift right there.

  46. Bet on Red

Not only can he pitch to success, he can also stand still with a mildly disinterested look to the team’s benifit with success. Bronx Cheer in effect

  47. RedsMonk65

Poo. India K’s. At least we got 3 and chased Stroman

    • Mark Moore

Looked like he let one he may have pounded go by. Certainly didn’t get any cookies.

  48. Indy Red Man

12 outs to go. They’re off tomorrow. I wouldn’t hesitate to use anyone. Givens was off yesterday and Lorenzen threw 23 pitches in 2 days. He could finish an inning. Cessa should probably get the first chance, but hopefully Vlad goes 7+

    • Bet on Red

55 Pitches… unless something happens he is going 7. Might be a complete game

  49. Votto4life

12 more outs and the team can enjoy the 90 minute flight to CVG and their off day tomorrow.

  50. RedAlert

How will Bell screw this up … he’s very capable

Throw strikes let defense work ….so he doesn’t have an opportunity

  51. Mark Moore

That’s the kind of tumble you can come up missing a couple of front teeth. Glad he looks OK.

  52. Mark Moore

Shake that off, Vlad. You can get these guys and still have the 7th left in the tank.

  53. Indy Red Man

I like Vlad alot, but they might have 3-4 hrs in gabp by now. That might be something the Reds look at it with him and Mahle both.

    • Mark Moore

He’s at least being way more efficient today. But the long fly outs that may fly OUT at GABP do need some analysis.

    • Indy Red Man

Reminds of another Bell-ian type manuever. He starts Mahle in gabp in the series of the year vs Milw after the break. Mahle who struggles in gabp, meanwhile Miley shuts out Milw for 8 at their place, but never sees them in that series.

    • Mark Moore

Nice. I think Baez hates a weak pop-up worth than striking out.

So you are saying we better get some more runs if we want to win and not go through what we experience yesterday.

      • Mark Moore

And we’d better not pitch Doolittle with an inherited runner. I read somewhere he lets a LOT of those guys score.

Stop with those rumors, lol.. I mean facts

  54. RedsMonk65

Need to add 3 or 4 more runs here….

  55. Mark Moore

Let’s send another 9 guys to the plate here, okay? Make Bell choose whether to call it a day for Vlad with a PH’er or let him swing (or walk) away.

  56. Indy Red Man

I’d pinch run Shogo for Wink

    • Mark Moore

Probably should have. Not happening now.

      • Indy Red Man

See if Shogo gets the steal at some point then its 5-1 now.

Might need Winker’s bat later in the game, to early

      • Indy Red Man

Nah….WInk is a liability on defense and 3 runs should hold up normally. 4 if Shogo could steal

If Geno hits a HR then do it with a 6 run lead for defense, didn’t happen so don’t. With are BP, I’m not yet!

  57. Bet on Red

Max Schrock 4 hit day. If Moose isn’t ready Tuesday I would start him at third

    • Mark Moore

I think we all feel that way. But DTB won’t even consider it.

  58. Mark Moore

Well, he gave that a ride at least.

Vlad for the 7th. Let’s show up some more D to back him up here.

  59. Indy Red Man

Ugghhhhh. Feels like we should be up 7-1

  60. Indy Red Man

Get’em ready. Its not always the pitch count. They’re seeing him the 3rd time now

  61. kevinz

    Butterflies folks.
    Bad feeling again

      Kevinz Think only pleasant thoughts!

  62. Bet on Red

Pitchers best friend 7 outs left

  63. Indy Red Man

Our double plays for and against? The Reds have to be a big net + there

Joey hasn’t been hitting into many. Wink is going the other way again. Stephenson occasionally or Nick

    • Mark Moore

Would love to see that stat. It does seem like we turn a LOT of them.

And he gets a wild swinging K to finish the 7th.

  64. Bet on Red

Send him back out there for the eighth. Pull him if he lets a baserunner aboard but I want to see Givins close

    • Mark Moore

Get both Mikey B and Givins warming up.

  65. Mark Moore

Having the conversation with my dear wife about the little zone box and the continued decline of home plate chumpires and their ability to actually call anything accurate these days.

    • JB

Well both pitches to Aquino were strikes and they both were inside the box. This umpire has had a good day.

      • Mark Moore

Well, strike 3 to Shogo wasn’t even close.

      • JB

It wasnt but I guarantee you that was from the Aquino at bat. Dont show up the ump like Aquino did.

    • Jim Walker

I like that high overhead camera from behind home plate for ball strike replays, at least of horizontal zone. The pitch Saturday that Suarez got bounced over was actually over the plate despite what the box showed. It may have been high, but it was over the plate.

And the pitch to Akiyama today was nowhere nearly as bad as looked from the CF camera and strike box. It kissed that front outside corner. Again, I can’t say from a vertical perspective; but, horizontally it was not a terrible call.

A pitcher’s call yes. A rotten call no. That’s a pitch I never gave the pitchers when I was umping youth baseball because I felt it was pure luck for kids to hit that spot so glancingly. But at the MLB level???

  66. Mark Moore

Can’t sit on a pitch after you showed up the HP Chumpire like he did.

    • Mark Moore

And Cowboy is right. Lucky the catcher didn’t try and throw or it would have been a DP on interference.

  67. Indy Red Man

AA? Brain cramp there? Cmon man?

  68. Arthur

Which reliever do you expect will come in and throw better than Gutierrez has thrown for 7 innings???

Perhaps Bell hasn’t seen this bullpen yet in 2021 and is unfamiliar with their past performance.

  69. Bet on Red

At least 2 inches off the plate

  70. MCT

The strike zone is expanding a bit on the outside corner there…

  71. JB

Now that pitch to Shogo was bad but that could be a little leftover from Aquino showing up the ump.

    • Mark Moore

Quite possibly the case. Which shows the Chumpires aren’t any more mature than the players. And they have only ONE job … which I consistently see them challenged at doing well.

  72. Indy Red Man

LaZY adjective ump? Overhead shot and he didn’t even bother leaning over to see the pitch he missed. These guys are worse then ever. Its really noticeable now when you have a game with a decent zone for both sides.

    • Mark Moore

I shall hereafter refer to every one of those lazy-you-know-what-with-a-god-complex guys as HP Chumpires. And MLB will do nothing about it.

Bring on the bots … they’ll rule the world sooner or later anyway.

      • JB

Not one mention today of the strike zone or the umpiring until the 8th inning. Then he misses one. To me that’s a great day.

      • Mark Moore

I’ve seen more than one missed. But maybe that’s just me.

I’m frustrated overall, that’s my point. It just seems worse and worse overall this season.

      • Indy Red Man

Actually today you’re right, but what irritated me was the overhead shot. He didn’t even lean over 2 inches to see the pitch better. Just assumed it got the corner. Maybe he was still po’d at AA

  73. Mark Moore

With the image of the Mets BP I saw something I didn’t think was allowed. 2 pitchers warming up at the same time. When was the last time Tinker had that happening.

  74. Bet on Red

Alas the substitutions begin in Louisville Senzel out in the 5th. 1 walk with three plate appearances. Seems it will be a little later then Tuesday for him

      • Bet on Red

and still in the game. He may be back Tuesday. I was referring more to senzel

  75. Mark Moore

Weak ground balls … got to love that.

  76. Arthur

I will readily admit that I don’t know what transpired between Bell and Gutierrez. Maybe Vlad said “I’m gassed.” And if he did, then this move makes sense.

But Vlad was dominant today. And his pitch count says he could go at least 8, and perhaps finish the game. Why not let try??

The decision to pull Vlad – I like it NOT.

    • Indy Red Man

Well Givens is tough on righties. It worked in the 8th atleast. I’d leave him in!! We have tomorrow off and you have Alonso batting 1st and Baez 3rd

    • Bet on Red

he was nearly about to go through the lineup a fourth time. Many of his later outs were ones that were hit hard. I can see running him out there for the eighth until there was a baserunner but I am not necessarily against him coming out either

      • Arthur

Valid points. I can’t disagree with any of them.

I would suggest that, among all of the other good things we are seeing this season, what should not be over-looked is the emergence of Gutierrez as a legit member of a really good starting rotation. Maybe a front-end of the rotation starter, if there actually is such a thing.

I would say – “kid – you want to be a stud? Go out and be a stud.” Show some faith in your starter who was lights out today. Maybe if you show him that you expect him to dominate, he will rise to the occasion and dominate.

I don’t want a rotation of guys who throw 5 and then throw in the towel.

  77. VaRedsFan

    Underhand that throw India.
Is there anyone more calm-looking than Givens on the mound?

    • Mark Moore

Yep. Played with a little bit of fire there. Nice grab and touch by Givens.

  78. Indy Red Man

Bob C. needs to ante up and keep Givens/Lorenzen next year. They probably wouldn’t cost that much. I’d def give up Tucker’s 7.5 in a heartbeat to keep both of them if thats what it cost.

    • Mark Moore

And Mikey needs to understand he’s a relief pitcher and possible OF’er at times. The SP experiment has sailed.

  79. VaRedsFan

Brach for the 9th…Everyone can use this time to fetch your heart medicine.

    • Mark Moore

With Mikey B still pretty fresh … Tinker goes to Brach. Heck, here I was thinking he had plenty of other options than Brach based on what we’ve seen lately.

      • Mark Moore

My speed dial for 911 is #78641#

  80. Mark Moore

Will we see the legend of Max Schrock continue here?

  81. VaRedsFan

7 walks in the last 4 innings. 3 ball counts on 13 of the last 15

  82. Indy Red Man

    David Bell:

Everyone loves Joey, but I got a brand new plan))))))))))

    Mad Max The Road Warrior

  83. RedsMonk65

Votto may not get his job back 😉

    Schrock 5 for 5

  84. Mark Moore

You know, if Winker had been on 2nd instead of Farmer, House probably has to hold him. Just saying.

  85. Indy Red Man

Now I said the same thing about Josh Van Meter, but Max can swing it. He needs to be in the conversation. I think he can better then a bench guy…platoon at worst

    • Mark Moore

Very versatile from what I’m reading. 3 infield and 2 outfield positions.

  86. VaRedsFan

Max batting .243 coming in to today….now at .333

  87. Mark Moore

What do y’all think … one more run in and we see the fans streaming out of the stadium again today?

  88. Indy Red Man

Dude has barely and I mean barely played, but yet he has a 5-5 and a game where he was a single short of a cycle. Streak hitter if nothing else

  89. Mark Moore

Kind of like that … now show us the outfield stands.

    • Mark Moore

Cowboy just said that – send them to the Number 7 Subway platform.

  90. Bet on Red

NAquin. All right guys…. someone chose the under so can we hold it there please.

    • Mark Moore

If AA comes through, how much are you out today?

    • Indy Red Man

Good bet. I thought about the Reds +170 last night, but didn’t pull the trigger.
8.5 was solid. I was expecting like 3-2 4-2 4-3 something like that, but never thought about the total for some reason

  91. Indy Red Man

This team can shake off tough losses. They’ve done it all year. Bell deserves respect there!!

    Bell says:

“You’re alive because I have allowed you to live. So you show me some gosh darn respect!

  92. VaRedsFan

Justin Wilson is coming on for the 9th now.

    • Mark Moore

Feel better about him than Brach.

  93. RedAlert

Ought to be Freeman’s last AB on this roster period .

  94. Reddawg2012

Well, the Mets have been Schrocked. What are the chances he can get a couple of starts at 3B during the upcoming home stand while we are still waiting for Senzel and Moose? Probably 0.

    • Mark Moore

Near zero with just Sir Strandsalot. Zero once Moose comes back. May find himself without a seat when the music stops within the next week.

  95. Mark Moore

Cowboy smack talking Baez … and he flies out to end the game.

    Nice work, boys.

See you all on Tuesday evening for the Twinkie fest.

  96. Melvin

Yeeeeh! We won. 🙂 So far I like Wilson better than AG or Doolittle.

  97. Mark Moore

    Man! That stadium emptied quickly.

  98. Arthur

What?? Start a hot hitter in place of guy who has struggled all season?

Are you nuts?? That’s not how we do things ‘round here. (Sarcasm).

Great Game by the Reds today! Just can’t get the Brewers to lose two or three in a row!

  100. Bet on Red

Great game. Unfortunately Brewers have already won. Hoping for a Rockies revival today now

  101. PTBNL

We will now call him MR. SCHROCK. Science officer (the science of baseball flight) and boldly going where few have went before. Live long and prosper Mr. Schrock!

  102. Arthur

Great win today. Lots of positives.

Only one negative – it should have been their 6th consecutive win. Oh – and we didn’t hit Báez.

    • Mark Moore

and an extra +100 for the Baez comment

  103. Randy in Chatt

Schrock needs some starts at 3rd base now. Period!

    • Melvin

Suarez has lots of guys coming at him to take his spot. Problem is, when everyone is healthy, there’s really no spot for Schrock….unless Senzel is in AAA but then we’d have no backup SS.

  104. Mark Moore

Nice moment in the spotlight for Schrock with the Jim Day interview.

    • Bet on Red

Yea, with his option he isn’t going to survive the roster crunch but the reds are sure to do everything to keep him in the system

      • Indy Red Man

They don’t need 14 pitchers now so wouldn’t we have room? Idk…crazy to send him down though. They might as well release Blandino from the organization. I’d keep Max and send out Freeman and a pitcher

      • PTBNL

They can’t send down a guy (Schrock) who has proven to hit at the ML level (small sample size of course but he gives professional at bats every time). You make room for players that can hit.

I’m not sold on Blandino and really, the book is still out on Senzel.

      • Melvin

There is No room for Blandino now anyway. It’s getting to crunch time for roster moves.

      • Old-school

The roster crunch is in the OF when Senzel and Moose and Castellanos come back

I really think we’ve reached a point that akiyama is the 27th player behind Aquino and Naquin.

Schrock has options like Santillan did so 5-5 doesn’t matter. But, Farmer helped win this game and is a 26 man guy and looks healthy so its coming down to Aquino, naquin or akiyama. Could the Reds really DFA Akiyama? That’s the right move.

      • Melvin

I don’t see how they have a choice but to place Aki on waivers if they really want to win. He provides the least and it’s not even close actually.

  105. RedsMonk65

FWIW….I was curious, so I looked it up. They always say (not sure who “they” is) that your goal should be to win every series. This year, the Reds have won 17 series, lost 12, and tied 5. Not sure if that means anything, but there you have it (those losses to the Diamondbacks really killed us you know?).

Great win today, first series win against the Mets in NY since 2013. Day off to rest, and then back at ’em at GABP with the gutted Twins and Pirates.

    Go Reds!

    • Dennis Westrick

Going forward the Reds DO need to win every series if they have any hope to catch the Brewers! 8 weeks left in the season! So, have to pick up a game a week!

  106. Dennis Westrick

Stayed quiet today because of what Bell pulled last night with Doolittle! Plenty of blame to go around last night! Then Bell decides to rest our hottest hitter (Votto) for today’s get away game! So, what do the Reds do? Win 7-1 against one of the Mets best pitchers! Makes Bell look like a genius! Now the the FO will extend Bell’s contract! Glad for the win! Glad for Vlad! And who is this Schrock guy and where has he been hiding/

  107. Tampa Red

Lol at all the hot takes, man that was good reading. Glad I saved checking out RLN until after the game.

    • Old-school

Definition of narcissism and arrogance. Criticizing commenters who are engaging and watching minute to minute and expressing emotion because they have passion for the reds…yet you dont watch and then after the fact judge….just go away…this is a site for people with passion who care about the minute to minute outcomes of the Reds.

No one is correct 60 seconds after a hr or strike out or double play.

It is a spot to vent about our favorite team…including frustration when things dont go correctly
      Go somewhere else Nanny state.

      • Old-school

        Lost credibility here tampa

Thanks for notifying RLN all your posts are worthless and have zero credibility
