Starting Pitchers

Wade Miley

It’s been a strong season for Wade Miley in 2021. The lefty has made 17 starts and has a 2.72 ERA through 102.2 innings for the Reds this year. He’s faced the Cubs twice this season and allowed two earned runs in both starts that saw a combined 11.2 innings pitched. The most recent one came earlier this month on July 4th when he threw 6.2 innings against Chicago.

As we have continuously pointed out on Wade Miley start days – teams don’t put lefties in the lineup against him very often. Through 17 starts left-handed hitters have managed just 86 plate appearances against him compared to 338 from right-handed hitters. The lefties deemed good enough to face him have found next to no success as they have hit .198/.244/.222 with two doubles and no home runs. By comparison righties are killing the ball against Miley – but that’s only by comparison because of how poorly lefties have performed. Right-handed hitters have a .247/.301/.388 line this season against Miley. There are some home/road splits working for Miley, too. On the road hitters have just a .570 OPS against him (.708 at home), and his ERA is 2.52 (2.91 at home).

Kyle Hendricks

Maybe one of the more underrated pitchers in baseball over the last decade, Kyle Hendricks has made 20 starts for the Cubs and had a 3.61 ERA this season in 117.1 innings. He has given up the most hits in the league with 125, but he’s also walked just 23 batters on the year to go along with 87 strikeouts. He’s only faced the Reds once this season and it was back on July 4th when he and Miley squared off. Cincinnati only scored one run in 6.0 innings against him on that day, but the Reds came out ahead by scoring twice off of the Cubs relievers to win 3-2.

Left-handed batters are hitting .289/.347/.512 against Hendricks this year. Right-handed hitters are having less success, posting a .256/.282/.420 line. His home/road splits are similar when it comes to the slash lines (.002 difference), but his home ERA is 3.90 and it’s 3.34 on the road.

Cincinnati Reds updated Top 25 Prospect List

This morning the Cincinnati Reds Top 25 Prospect List was updated over at RedsMinorLeagues.com. At the top of the list is Hunter Greene. Several players have really jumped up the list since the last update, though. In a strange twist for a Reds list – it feels a lot more pitching heavy than position player heavy. If prospect lists are your jam, go give it a read.

Time to stomp out the Cubs for good if possible.

  2. Old-school

    Outstanding prospect update!

    Good info

  3. Indy Red Man

Joe Ross going tonite for the Nats. Thats one guy the Reds could use imo! He’s only 28 and touched 97 mph tonite. 4.02 era coming in with 91 Ks/28 walks in 87 innings.

Vast improvement over Vlad/Hoffman as a 5th starter and he only makes 1.5 mil this year. Get a guy like that and maybe sign him for 2022-23 if he works out.

  4. Bet on Red

If there was ever a night for the under.

The cubs claim that they might be sellers…. lets explain it too them

    • Indy Red Man

Wind blowing out, but only 7 mph. 8.5 total? IDK? I was going to take the Reds as a dog, but we don’t hit soft-tossers that well normally.

Geno….rap name Sir Strandsalot batting 5th? Idk?

Milw plays Pitt 9 times by mid-August. We need to be within 5-6 by the last 3 games vs Milw in late August. I doubt we gain any ground much by then

      • Dennis Westrick

Good Rap Name for Geno! I keep hoping that he reverses his fortune and starts knocking in some of those lonely baserunners!

  5. Klugo

Brewers starting another series with the Pirates tomorrow. Gotta win now.

    • Dennis Westrick

Pirates played the Giants tough this weekend in SF. Hope that trend continues! Reds need to take care of business in Chicago!

  6. Dennis Westrick

So, we face the stupid Cubbies before the Fire Sale changes their lineup by the end of this week! Let’s start with a win! Good news from last night after the loss to the Cards is the Reds did not lose any ground in the Wild Card race or to the Brewers!

  7. Mark Moore

No Baez? Is he headed out of town or injured?

Beat the Stupid Cubs. Beat them HARD!!! Beat them like a trash can in Houston.

  8. Mark Moore

Can’t fault Jesse for trying to make that happen. Took a pretty good throw and that carom off the wall.

    • Bet on Red

I mean this litterally, if jesse had gone for the side of the bag and not the top of the bag keeping his hand flat to the dirt he would have been safe there…. very close

      • Mark Moore

Yep. The replay showed that right at the tip of his fingers. Spread the hands a bit and keep them flat – he’s in.

      • Indy Red Man

Too easy of a throw for their guy imo plus he’s a 3B so you know he’s got a cannon. Just another Reds baserunning mistake. As usual
Aquino, Votto, and Suarez on deck. Even if you make 2nd base Aquino and Suarez don’t hit singles that often? Stay on 1st and hope somebody makes it 2-0

      • Bet on Red

the fact the ball came right off the wall to him helped.. I am not knocking that try and it is certainly not a TOOBLAN. Was just a good play

    • VaRedsFan

Safe all day with a swim move slide

  9. Mark Moore

So we get to play from behind again … this feels so familiar.

    • Bet on Red

even against hendricks this is nothing for a game that has 8 innings left

      • Indy Red Man

Its something. I had a bad feeling about tonite. Cubs are a veteran team and just take what the pitcher gives them. They’re vulnerable to a pitcher with good stuff, but they won’t get themselves out which is where Miley/Hendricks make their $

      • Mark Moore

And a breeze blowing out. Just need The Hulk to settle into a groove.

    • Mark Moore

Yeah, we know … he’s practicing for his role as our DH next season.

    • kevinz

Got on Votto awhile back when at his Lowest.
So glad see him doing well.
      Youth opened his eyes.
And farmer been playing well lately.

  10. Melvin

Wouldn’t it be cool if Votto, by the end of the year, was in the MVP running?

    • Bet on Red

he keeps this up, that may be a possibility

  11. JB

Joey Votto is not a coward or a Frady Cat.

  12. Rex

that is how I use to run…in the 1980’s

  13. Bet on Red

Kyle farmer with the Ivy assist triple

  14. Mark Moore

Hustle triple by Kyle Grit Farmer!

  15. Melvin

Farmer’s dream is to play SS in the ML. He doesn’t want to leave.

    • Mark Moore

He keeps making a case for it. I have my doubts regarding his durability for a full season, but he’s more than serviceable from what I’ve seen.

  16. Rex

I can’t believe wink didn’t reach in to the ivy

    • Bet on Red

well now hearing the rule I think we are glad he didnt

    • Mark Moore

Smart move to do what he did. Them’s the ground rules in Wrigley. May have saved a run there.

      • Rex

yup I just see wink as impulsive and it looked he was fighting the urge to reach for it

  17. Mark Moore

The Hulk to lead off the 3rd … slap one somewhere, Wade.

  18. Bet on Red

If they are giving them away for free…. we will take it

    • RedAlert

Geno rally killer – how in the world does Bell put him in the 5 hole – that’s insane !

  19. Indy Red Man

AA ripped off on the 1-1 pitch so it put him in swing mode. He needs to do better, but these umps just ruin games and ruin careers. That pitch had some comeback action just to get close but it was never a strike.

  20. VaRedsFan

AA is really blowing his case for more playing time

  21. Bet on Red

Joey Just missed a grand slam. Tie game… not an inning later

  22. JB

On July 18th Winker was at .292 and everybody wanted to sit him. Since then he is 12 -28 at a .428 clip.

  23. Indy Red Man

Sir Strandsalot adding 2 to his collection

    • Mark Moore

So he did. Is there a stat for Strikeout to LOB ratio?

    • RedAlert

I mean his performance patently is
Irrelevant ! No other manager in mlb would be penciling him in the lineup on a daily basis – that’s inexcusable by Bell . However , I expect nothing else from him . He’s not a good manager and his decisions are not smart more times than not .

      • Mark Moore

I’d like to argue the opposite point … but I just can’t based on what I’ve seen as evidence.

  24. Mark Moore

That works. Plus India is on 3rd now as well.

  25. Mark A Verticchio

I have know idea why Bell Started Aqiuno tonight. You can’t base it on 2 at bats, oh well just another Bell stunner. I think this is the kind of guy Shogo could hit, he has trouble with high velocity.

    • Mark Moore

Yeah, you’re right. Evidence would be Miley’s little flare.

    • Indy Red Man

Please?????????? SHogo has a 500 ops. Miley is a better hitter! He takes a mans swing unlike Shogo

AA has like 300 career at-bats? Why does everyone love Shogo and Lopez? AA is stronger then both of them put together. He can make 60% contact and the ball goes out.

      • Melvin

He’s not doing well tonight so far of course but AA talent/potential will never be realized until somehow he gets at least a couple of months in a row where he can see good pitches on a regular basis. I want to win now and I’m glad he’s starting tonight for whatever it’s worth. He’s already shown to be much better at recognizing pitches. It’s easy to tell just by the number of walks he’s been getting.

      • Old-school

        We dont know on Aquino
I’m all for playing him in RF till Castellanos gets back but he cant strike out with the bases loaded swinging at a 2 seam fastball that almost hits him .

He’s got a cannon arm and absurd power. He also has plate discipline issues and that needs to play out. I’m just coming to recoil on guys who strike out beyond 25-26%. Aquino has a career 30% K rate and is at 37% in 2021. Keep playing him but if he cant stop swinging at balls, hes not a hitter.

      • Melvin

        @ Old-school
I would agree with that. I don’t like all or nothing hitters either. He needs to be a .250 hitter at least.

      • LDS

Unless we’re talking Suarez then .170 is fine.

  26. Indy Red Man

Geno not covering 2nd on the shift? Mistake there somewhere? Thats a doubleplay ball.

    • Bet on Red

Miley off tonight… most unlikely of slugfests is beginning here

  27. Jctrum

Maybe it’s just me, but as much as I love Barry, I prefer the combo of Sadak/Welsh. I prefer Welsh’s commentary and I feel like he and Sadak play better off each other.

  28. Dennis Westrick

Is Miley getting “squeezed” by the HP umpire?

    • Mark Moore

Maybe a little. He’s not as sharp as we’ve seen the last few outings from my perspective.

  29. Mark Moore

Why didn’t the Stupid Cubs trade Bryant earlier today? You know he’s moving. As somebody said, probably to the Mets right after this series so we get to see him again later this week.

  30. Indy Red Man

Not turning 2 on Rizzo’s grounder comes back to get us. What happened there? The shift can’t be right if nobody is there to turn an easy dp on a ball right to a guy?

    • Indy Red Man

Has to be Geno there. I’d pull him

  31. Mark Moore

We’re headed to the bullpen about the 6th unless something drastically changes here. 65 through 3 is a LOT even for The Hulk.

  32. Dennis Westrick

Yikes! Miley at 65 pitches thru 3 innings!

  33. Mark A Verticchio

The hitters in front and behind Votto are not helping much.

  34. Mark Moore

Well, that works. And he already has the triple. Would love for him to get a cycle in here.

  35. Indy Red Man

Farmer!!! Cycle alert!!! I wish we had more then 2-3 guys hitting at a time.

  36. Melvin

hahaha!!! Farmer trying to say, “Don’t waste your time trading for a SS”. lol

  37. Bet on Red

Kyle Farmer ties it halfway to the cycle

  38. Indy Red Man

Jorge Soler 2 more HRs tonite so far. 48 bombs in 2019 and hes a FA next year. $8/mil this year. He was having a Geno type year, but KC is the biggest park there is.

If Nick goes then he’s the first guy I’d go after!!

  39. Mark A Verticchio

I agree with Cowboy the Reds don’t need a short stop , they need an outfielder and maybe a starter, short term. The Bull pen may actually take care of itself if everybody comes back healthy. It is going to get tested tonight, look at Milley’s pitch count.

  40. dhmorgan

I haven’t seen Miley pitch this poorly in quite a while.
I’m not sure the Reds bullpen would do worse than this.

  41. Indy Red Man

Bad defense tonite. Miley doesn’t have it, but Bell has no long man to go to? Hoffman? You give up runs in gabp and everyone runs their pitch count up so Bell is stuck with the starter. Not good. This team was just basically scuttled w/Nick’s injury on top of Antone/Sims/Lorenzen/Warren

  42. Bet on Red

looks like someone got some water on the fuse here

  43. Melvin

Good job by Barnhart there. He was NOT letting him reach home plate.

  44. Melvin

Walking Rizzo is not the worst idea here.

  45. Mark Moore

Good old pitch around on Rizzo. Now take down Duffy.

  46. Indy Red Man

Hoffman threw 36 pitches yesterday. Osich 16 and Tony 21.

Doolittle alert. Maybe Hendrix or Perez or some other base circling enablers

    • Mark Moore

+100 for the phrase “base circling enablers”

    • Bet on Red

perez is in Louisville, I highly doubt we are seeing him here

    • Indy Red Man

Big Daddy AG is back. We might need 1.2 from him tonite

  47. JB

As bad as Miley has been he could go another inning and make it into the 6th.

  48. Dennis Westrick

    One more inning for Miley?

    • Mark Moore

Have to hope that’s the approach.

  49. Dennis Westrick

Why is Kris Bryant still in a Cub uniform?

    • Mark Moore

So he can torment us in Chicago, move to the NYM and torment us there later this week.

      Any other questions, Dennis?

Oh, and did the rest of this group clear you to watch this game tonight?

      • Dennis Westrick

It’s friends like you guys on the RLN that keep me coming back! I’ll be around unless I fall into my swimming pool when I put shock in later this evening!

  50. Old-school

Aquino and suarez at 3/5 holes gotta produce here soon

    Lets go reds

  51. Bet on Red

and we have lit a fire of our own…. forget what i said about the under

  52. Mark Moore

Is Joey chatting with them, or just checking out the blonde?

  53. Melvin

Good AB by AA there. He learned from his two previous ABs.

  54. Mark Moore

Are they conceding the run here?

    • RedsMonk65

Think they may have. To get to Geno.

  55. Melvin

If they walk Votto here they are SMART with Suarez coming up.

  56. Rex

Hendricks did the right thing walking Joey

  57. Mark Moore

OK, Geno. Just do at least what you did the last AB.

  58. Melvin

I hope this is Geno’s once a week HR.

    • Old-school

I hope he hits a sac fly or walks

      • Melvin

Well. Neither one got what we wanted unfortunately.

    • LDS

Strikeout. Starting him and in the fifth slot is management malpractice.

      • Chris Holbert

        Sadak…Suarez, 5 for his last 46…

      • LDS

You know Melvin, he may somewhere else. A place where the manager has the guts (or brains) to sit him and tell him he gets back in the lineup once he’s solved his problem. A number of people here have identified mechanical issues with his swing that the Reds management either don’t see, won’t address, or are ignored. End of the day, it’s a management issue.

      • Melvin

Well Johnny Bench agrees. That’s for sure

  59. RedAlert

He’s pitiful – continues to play . Just brutal and ridiculous.

Dude needs to be in the bench period . And stay there

  60. Bet on Red

Alright, Into their bullpen. still got 2 outs to play with. Just cant defend geno. He has until moose gets healthy. cause I am playing farmer over him.

  61. Old-school

Unintentiional Intentional walk to votto with bases loaded to allow a run to get to Suarez and he strikes out

    Then they remove the pitcher

    That just happened

  62. Mark A Verticchio

Bell is so blind when it comes to Suarez it is just sad. I have never seen a player that is hurting the team as much as he is getting chance after chance, unbelievable.

  63. Mark Moore

Let’s see if the Other Kid can make it happen

    • Mark Moore

Let’s all just assume the HP umps are terrible. Then we’ll be pleasantly surprised when one (by some miracle) calls a decent and consistent zone.

      • Bet on Red

who is the one that has a loud and articulate description of every pitch… i think that is the only decent one all year

  64. Bet on Red

alright… whatever works… a single or a double here Farmer

  65. Melvin

Tyler Steve gets the job done more often than not. He IS a hitter.

    • RedsMonk65

Not sure I like burning Stephenson as a PH so quickly. Shogo replaces him at first as PR.

  66. Mark Moore

It worked out. We exchange a faster runner for a slower one on first and score. It’s all good.

    • Mark Moore

And now a MUCH faster runner. Maybe a steal here? But don’t want to take anything away from Farmer tonight.

  67. Old-school

Winker and stephenson have 2 productive at bats by putting the ball in play on balls that barely reached second base

Give me guys who put the ball in play

    Im done with

  68. AllTheHype

Geno +3 more LOB, 5 total. Thanks Bell for putting him in the middle again. Incompetence in the dugout.

    • Arthur

I suspect that Big Bob is making the call on playing Suarez, aka “The Rally Killing Machine.” Bob’s probably saying “I’m not gonna pay that man all that money to sit the bench!!”

Never mind that RKM is a boat anchor dragging on this offense. For Reds ownership, winning games is of secondary importance.

How about letting Barrero play SS, and sliding Farmer over to 3B?? That would significantly improve the infield defense, and even if Barrero hits .190, it would improve the team’s offense.

      • Melvin

Big Bob is making Bell the manager too so it’s kind of one and the same.

    • Bet on Red

A combination of Moose and Senzel will displace Suarez at third… as long as they are not healthy Suarez will play

      • Arthur

        That makes perfect sense.

Which is why I would bet folding money that the Reds won’t do it when Senzel and/or Moose get activated.

I hope I am wrong, but when did reds management last make a move that made good sense?

  69. Mark Moore

I’d really like to see another run or two here. I’ve got about 20 more minutes I can go and then I turn into a pumpkin.

    • Dennis Westrick

Right behind you Mark! Will hang in for one more inning!

  70. Dennis Westrick

Is there a strike zone for Miley tonight?

    • Bet on Red

the pitches are slightly outside, but i would swear Hendricks was getting those calls….

  71. Mark Moore

Santillan warming. Can we hope for multiple innings? Please?

    • Dennis Westrick

Silly rabbit! Trix are for kids and NO Reds RP can pitch more than one (1) inning!

  72. Dennis Westrick

Hate to see it but time to replace Miley!

  73. Melvin

Good play by Farmer. Got to admit it.

  74. Gpod

Guys on Mlb tonight had a great analysis of Suarez….says players lie to themselves & tell themselves that they will be fine because they were successful before & they just have to keep doing what they did before & it will all come around eventually & refuse to adjust & do something else….that is Geno exactly

    • AllTheHype

      50 HRs baby!

It’ll come. Just keep swinging hard in case you hit it.

    • AllTheHype

Managers lie to themselves apparently too

    • Arthur

Do you suppose coaching (or a total lack thereof) might play at least a part of this situation? Is there a hitting coach who is working with RKM to try and make adjustments? If not, why not?? Because clearly, what he’s doing now – ain’t working.

  75. Melvin

Well considering our options, I agree with David Bell in leaving him in there THIS time.

  76. Bet on Red

Cubs are looking to lose a face here maybe, not bryant but Andrew chaffin. Deal being finalized with Oakland

  77. Old-school

Witnessing a big moment for Santillan

He’s now a high leverage reliever.
It was telling yesterday when Hoffman pitched after Gray. That was filler and they were elevating Santillan for this moment.

    Hope he answers the bell.

    • AllTheHype

Yup. Let’s see some high leverage Santillan, finally. He was facing the right guy first, Heyward.

  78. Dennis Westrick

Need a DP like a baby needs a mother! Or a couple of strikeouts!

  79. Mark Moore

Nicely turned DP to hold on to our advantage.

One more inning and I’m out.

  80. Bet on Red

Tony S comes through, only three pitches… his AB will be this inning so will we see him bat?

  81. RedAlert

Nice job Tony !!! Wow needed that !!!

  82. Old-school

Jim Day reporting Andrew Chafin bullpen lefty headed to A’s

    Cubs mailing it in

  83. Indy Red Man

I like Tony in the pen. Air it out with the heater/hard slider and see what happens.
    21 pitches yesterday. He’s on deck….kind of surprised w/Bell

As for Geno? Shrock didn’t even start and had an rbi double/walk yesterday. Whats going on? Is it ownership or Bell or what? He’s cost us atleast 4-5 games in the standings by himself. I’m not even assuming his replacements would be average and its still 4-5 games.

    • AllTheHype

Bell is as stubborn in his resistance to analytics as Geno is changing his approach.

    • Old-school

They aren’t benching Geno for Lopez or Shrock.
They will for Moose. I hope they do for Senzel.
Suarez is longer hitting for power
He’s 5-47 with 1 HR last 15 games or so. OPS after the ASB in the 400’s

He s literally having one of the worst seasons in MLB history and its August next week. Senzel is my vote at 3b this weekend if his rehab goes well

      • AllTheHype

I’ll bet Senzel takes PAs away from Naquin and Farmer, but not Geno.

      • Arthur

I would think management would try to spare him the indignity of an historically bad season.

But I think that is giving them too much credit.

When will Moose be ready to play?

    • Mark Moore

Wow! Words fail. We knew it was bad, but leading by a full 10% margin? That’s a ton.

      • Indy Red Man

I couldn’t find that stat, but I just knew. I watch other teams enough to know

      • AllTheHype

@Indy, yeah there was little doubt. No other manager would put an abysmal player in the middle of the lineup to give them that many opportunities. That stat says as more about Bell than it does Geno, in my opinion.

    • Old-school

      Strong work ATH
Good info on why RBI isnt about the hitter but the guys hitting ahead.

joey Votto said so after his 1000th RBI…he didnt really care.

A good hitter hitting 5th for this Reds team with 3 top15 OBP guys plus Votto would have 90 rbi by now.

      • AllTheHype

Yeah Geno had 200 men on base, 18 HRs and 53 RBI. So he only plated 35 of the 200 runners on base.

RBI is almost as bad a stat as pitching wins and saves. Meaningless.

      • AllTheHype

I got that wrong. It is 200 LOB, so must have been 235 on base since he plated 35. So he plated 35 of 235. That’s pretty bad.

      • Melvin

Well if Geno had the mentality of Tyler Steve and just do what it took to get a run in he would have MANY more RBIs that’s for sure. He needs to watch Stephenson. Perfect example tonight. I little nubbler plated a big run. That’s the difference. Situations like that are when RBIs matter.

  84. Mark Moore

Last comment. I’ll watch the B6th and catch up in the morning.

Great sharing this game with y’all again. Someday, we need to pack a section at GABP.

    • Dennis Westrick

Goodnight Mark! Making a trip from the Orlando area to Northern KY the last week of September. Going to take in a game at GABP for the first time in ten (10) years!

      • Old-school

        Dennis- its a great time.
Went last weekend. Sonny was bad but great venue and atmosphere. Head out to RF for an inning . Great views of the river and the game. Reds team shop is cool as well. The area around GABP is great.

    • Dennis Westrick

Wow! Three (3) strikeouts in 5 batters faced!

  85. Melvin

I hope Santi keeps pitching like this out of the pen. He’ll be a stopper.

  86. Melvin

Wait a minute. Do we have a good relief pitcher here in the making?

  87. Indy Red Man

Tony The Tiger!!! Grab some bench!!!

    He’s a reliever for sure!!

    • Old-school

You’ve trademarked not one but 2 nicknames.

      Tony the Tiger
      SirStrandalot

  88. RedAlert

Sadak wears me out – guy can’t shut up for 2 seconds

    • Arthur

After watching Aquino these past few games, I have one simple question: when’s Castellanos coming back??? Because AA is flailing and failing.

  89. Melvin

I’m an AA fan but he’s not making me happy tonight.

  90. Old-school

Have we learned anything on Aquino in 2 days?
    0-5 with 4 K and 3 BB and a popup

    Talk about 2 outcomes.

    • RedAlert

Certainly not helping his case for more playing time

  91. LDS

So Santillian is out after 22 pitches for Brach? Saving him for “tomorrow” doesn’t make much sense to me. As for AA, Geno has been giving him pointers.

    • Bet on Red

pitched yesterday as well, dont want to blow out the arm

  92. Indy Red Man

AA has 320 career at-bats guys. Mike Schmidt hit .196 early on

    • Melvin

Yeah. I’m not giving up on him yet. He’s just not making me happy tonight. Didn’t that Schmidt guy end up with a pretty nice career? 🙂

    • LDS

Remember Hernandez? It’s a Bell pattern.

      • LDS

Sorry this is the wrong thread. This is IRM’s Brach thread

  93. Melvin

No way Aki caught that ball. Umpires are getting worse all the time. Pathetic.

  94. Indy Red Man

Brach is too old to be used this often. I’d try to get 2 out of AG, but its shaky no matter what Bell does.

  95. Indy Red Man

    Tucker got’em. Inning over

    6 outs to go

  96. Tim

Geno a solid .154 the last 30 days. Sit him last May and we would have a ten game swing on our record. He makes Farmer look like an all star. I just can’t understand what they are thinking.

    • Indy Red Man

Base hit!! He’s good til Labor Day now)))

      • Tim

9 more ABs and he’ll get another one. Glad he got this one

    • Melvin

The only Red with more ABs this year is Winker.

  97. BUCK

Brach, Osich and Garrett: please, NO MORE!!!

    • Indy Red Man

Doolittle? Santillan and HH can’t pitch every day. We never blow anyone out so every day is high pressure

  98. Indy Red Man

Here is a situation where Oakland would use their best guy Trivino in the 8th with the Cubs going 9-1-2. You put in AG or whatever and their first 3 are righties til Rizzo.

Maybe we get 2-3 runs and we won’t have to sweat it so much?

  99. Melvin

We HAVE to take advantage of this somehow at least a little.

  100. Gpod

I have noticed this about Barnhart….when there are men on base, he swings at anything & everything

    • Arthur

Reds are simply terrible situational hitters. All of them. No one seems willing to choke up and out the ball in play.

Add that to a total lack of team speed and these failures to score with the bases loaded aren’t really all that surprising.

  101. Indy Red Man

Bases loaded nobody out twice and got 1 run total. Thats it if we lose.

  102. dhmorgan

Cubs: “Here, take the game, it’s yours.”
Reds: “No thanks. We want to do this the hard way.”

  103. Melvin

Nothin. Oh well. Whoever is your best pitcher left you pitch him now.

    • Indy Red Man

HH here with the top of their lineup and being righties. Then AG in the 9th if his pitch count is too high versus their weaker hitters

      • Melvin

Too late to pitch our best pitcher now to keep the lead.

  104. VaRedsFan

Relax…..Innings like that never come back to haunt us .sarc

  105. RedAlert

Just awful !! This team gotta be worst in MLB WITH DRIVING IN RUNNERS FROM THIRD KESS THan 2 outs !!!! Pathetic and it happens over and over and over and over

  106. RED THUNDER

Once again can anybody on this team just put the ball in play or have a productive out? Sad

  107. Mark A Verticchio

Theses bases loaded nobody situations are killing the team, you have to find a way to get at least 1 run across. It would have been a good idea to squeeze or something. That may cost the team the ball game.

  108. Old-school

    Welp
Reds out of players again in the 8 th inning
    Hope the bullpen saves it
Its Mike Freeman to the rescue as last position player and Osich to pitch the 8th

  109. Indy Red Man

Bell. I said go HH there because its the top of their lineup. Even AG is better then Osuck

    • RED THUNDER

Everyone agrees with you except the guy making the selection

    • RedAlert

Bell runs this guy out here … Brilliant

  110. RedAlert

You knew OSTRICH was gonna give it up

He ain’t got it … ain’t had it

    • Bet on Red

he never had it…. even his best stuff isnt good. He needs to be on a bus to Louisville yesterday

  111. JB

There are times Sadak where you need to shut your mouth. Ssying Hendrick is on the hook. Next pitch is gone. The guy is a human jinx

    • RedAlert

I have notice the same thing … guy does it over and over again

  112. RedsMonk65

THAT’S why we needed more runs ….

Tie game with a short bench because of early substitutions…

  113. Indy Red Man

Our hitters choked and so did Bell. You have to mix and match with the hitters they’ll be facing. If I can do it then why can’t the man that does this for a living?

  114. Mark A Verticchio

Just a poor choice by Bell yo go to Osich, he is just an awful manager.

  115. LDS

How many games like this must fans endure before the FO gets some additional bullpen help and fires Bell. Start with firing Bell.

    • Indy Red Man

They’ll probably go like 83-79 and then the front office can blame it on injuries, etc.
He’s not getting fired unless they lose 15 out of 20 or something

      • LDS

Should have left Santillian in another inning

      • Indy Red Man

Nah….he had 21 yesterday and 20+ today. You have to consider pitch counts and usage

      • LDS

40+ pitches over two days for a starting pitcher doesn’t sound like that much. This is yesterday all over again. Throw away a very winnable game.

  116. Indy Red Man

You go with HH there. He was off yesterday and only threw 8 pitches on Saturday. If he gets beat then so be it. Lose with your best guy. Not with Osuck….the career scrub??

  117. JB

Left handers hit over 300 against Osich. So let’s leave him in.

  118. Melvin

So according to the broadcast Hembree was up but then down after the HR? Does that mean we don’t pitch our best unless it’s a save situation? If so that’s Dusty Baker er I mean David Bell.

  119. Bet on Red

Why is Votto soft-tossing to second on a potential DP.

  120. RED THUNDER

He has faced his 3 get him out of there while we still have a chance

  121. RedAlert

Lol Garcia coming in – Cubs bout to be in lead

  122. JB

Antone,Sims,Lorenzen,Warren,Hembree and Santillan. That leaves 2 spots. Garrett will get one because they need a lefty. Who knows who gets the last spot but it will good to get rid of all these garbage pitchers

  123. Indy Red Man

Thats twice in a row HH gets used, but not when HE CAN ACTUALLY SAVE THE GAME?? Whiskey tango foxtrot????????????? Bell is adjective clueless

    November 1963 Dallas:

Dealey Plaza didn’t go that well. Lets hire some more security for the ride back to the airport

    • Melvin

Yeah. JFK, like LIncoln, was much better protected after death than when alive. I get it.

  124. Gpod

Trying to win a division & running these Aaa pitchers out there is just brutal

  125. Bet on Red

well a smart move finally from bell

  126. Indy Red Man

Reminds me of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid:

They’re in Bolivia and hired on to guard the bankroll. They’re looking over their shoulders left and right.

Strother Martin says “What are you doing?

B&S “We’re looking for an ambush”

SM “You don’t have to worry about an ambush until AFTER we get the money”

  127. Indy Red Man

Why not AG over Osich? AG was your closer coming into the season. Has he fell that far that he’s behind a scrub off the scrap heap? I swear Bell makes no sense?

That 15-11 game he used HH and Castellanos, but neither one when they could win the game. Nick hit with a 4-5 run deficit just so his IL stint can last longer? Atleast let the man try to win the game in the 8th 9th or whatever? Its so stupid that its hard to believe

      • bug

Bell knows less about baseball than any manager I’ve ever seen. 90% of his decisions are wrong!!! He’s single-handedly lost 15 to 20 games for us this year. And that’s not counting him continuing to play the worst player in baseball (Suarez) game after game after game. And the Reds team is filled with chokers. Bases loaded all night long with no outs and not being able to score. They should be called the Cincinnati Chokers. Even their good hitters choke under pressure. Did I mention Bell is the worst manager in history and Suarez is the worst player in history? No clutch players,..and a moron for a manager. We’re going nowhere.

  128. Bet on Red

    ALright Aquino, keep them moving

  129. VaRedsFan

Stupid pitch there by Kimbrel….had to throw the wrinkle there …we’ll take it

  130. RedAlert

Better get it done here … auto out on deck

    • RedAlert

This ump behind the plate completely sucks

      • RedAlert

Suarez is just pitiful – no accountability by Bell though – ZERO

  131. Melvin

NO WAY he went in my opinion. Did he?

    • Bet on Red

votto swing two no swing three yes. Suarez maybe, but the pitch was a near foot outside and the Ump seemed to call it on the pitch

    • VaRedsFan

      Votto went IMO. Suarez didn’t.

    • Ryan

I don’t think he did on either pitch but he did not complain

      • Melvin

He clutched his fist towards the 3B umpire as if to mimic him in disagreement.

  132. RedsMonk65

Wish Stephenson were still available to pinch hit here.

  133. Gpod

Akiyama can never get around on a fastball anymore

  134. Melvin

I don’t know how you can take a chance and let that one go Aki. Two on, nobody out. Nothing again. We need to win this game.

  135. RedAlert

Deserve to lose – hate to say it but deserve to lose

First 2!9 on and they don’t even move – awful

  136. Bet on Red

Well, at least we will have Shogo on second to start the 10th.

    • Indy Red Man

Lol. I love you dude! The Reds could be 19 out with 20 to go and you’ll say “So you’re saying there’s a chance”

  137. Mark A Verticchio

This game is on the entire team, bases loaded nobody out don’t score, putting Osich in the game and so and so on.

    • Bet on Red

I think winker Votto, WInker India and Farmer have pulled their weight today

    • Indy Red Man

I’m going to go with mostly Suarez and Bell. They’re the icebergs to the Reds Titantic.

      • burtgummer01

Yeah Bell didn’t get one hit or record an out.All his fault. You and your other not smart buddies need to get a life

  138. RED THUNDER

3 strikeouts in a row, just wanted a texas leaguer there or some productive outs but we have all seen this before, right Bill Murray.

  139. Indy Red Man

Don’t forget the groundball Rizzo hit where he hit it directly into the shift and fell down in the box. Nobody covered 2nd base so we didn’t get the dp and Geno was the only guy on that side.

That has to be on him. No way a shift is devised where you can’t turn 2 on a grounder right to someone?

    That cost us a run

  140. Melvin

For those who say Bell never mismanages the bullpen I don’t see how they would have a leg to stand on tonight. Oh well. Let’s win anyway. Let’s find a way to get it done.

  141. RedAlert

Game won’t make it to 10th I’m afraid

Stupid walk to lead off inning

  142. Melvin

That was scary. Good job AA. Need a double play.

  143. Bet on Red

Heath is gassed. AG should come in for the lefty. AG should have actually been in in the 8th, but whatever. annother loss

  144. Gpod

What an implosion….like we haven’t seen this before

  145. Indy Red Man

Maybe Bell loses with HH in the 8th, but atleast give your closer a lead to protect. We had a million guys on and couldn’t score more runs. 4-3 bases loaded nobody out and got 1 run. Bases loaded after that nobody out and got nothing. 1st/2nd nobody out with 4-5-6 coming up and got nothing. Now they’ll win the game

I like our young talent. AA had a nice hit off Kimbrel. We’ll play out the string and should have a nice roster next year

  146. RedAlert

… meanwhile front office sits around and watches the grass grow

  147. Mark A Verticchio

51- 49. Bell needs to go, unless you watch every game you simply can’t believe how bad he is.

  148. Bet on Red

If he is not suspended by tomorow

    • Melvin

He’s injured anyway. No loss for them.

  149. LGR

Yayyy. Another bullpen malfunctionnnn. Have not seen that beforeeeee.

  150. LDS

Once again, count on AG. This game was just like Sunday’s game against St. Louis. They brought home less than 1/3 of the base runners. Suarez is a train wreck. And Bell? Bell couldn’t manage a lemonade stand.

    • Slicc50

They said on the radio Suarez leads the NL in outs made. There is one guy in MLB who has made more. Can’t remember who it is though

    • bug

Yep,..right on. Is Krall the one the one that doesn’t understand just how bad Suarez and Bell are???? Someone can not process what the rest of the Reds’ fans see plainly are the problems and understand clearly what needs to be done. It’s unbelievably embarrassing that the fans understand but the management has no clue. It’s as if they want to lose.

  151. Slicc50

Are you freaking kidding me? They lost this one. I’m sorry but I put this one the offense just as much as anything. Reds should have had atleast 5 more runs!!!!!

  152. TyGuy88

Mr. LOB hits 5th every game. No idea why on earth he is in the lineup every day, let alone hits 5th. Also, apparently the FO thinks our bullpen will just get healthy and return to some semblance of normalcy.

I think it’s time to sell and get value for some of these guys when you can.

  153. Tim

Reds have left way too many stranded without getting one across the plate. When it’s a tied ballgame you do anything you can to get that lead. Strikeouts and pop-ups won’t. A good bunt could

    • Slicc50

People say the RBI is a useless stat. I sure wish they would have gotten a couple more tonight!

      • Melvin

That’s correct. What do you think Tony Perez or others of the Big Red Machine would say about the RBI? They could use this game as an example.

      • Slicc50

Probably something like…….you can get them on all you want, but you have to have guys who can get them home!

  154. Mark A Verticchio

Well, if that action doesn’t fire up this team nothing will, that was awful and the entire Cub organization should be ashamed of what happened. The Reds need to use that for the rest of this series.

  155. RedAlert

I will say for the 100,000 time … this team ain’t winning NOTHING with David Bell as manager

Ownership will do nothing to improve this team By Thursday (as usual ) at the trade deadline

    • Indy Red Man

Too late now. Really it doesn’t bother me. We’re not that good with all these injuries. If they traded the future for this year then thats a mistake

    • RED THUNDER

Some have said that all year but others refuse to believe it. Time to be sellers!

      • bug

Personally I’d pay someone a lot just to take Bell off our hands. Would that be considered a seller?

  156. JA

This team without Castellanos goes nowhere.

RKM. The fifth spot is unsustainable.

  157. Indy Red Man

    Tony was great
AA had a hit/walk work in progress, but potential
Farmer rock solid utility guy in the future

AG gets beat on the first pitch. He’s never going to be high leverage. The 3 batter minimum kills him because he can only get out lefties.

Sorting out has begun, but of course Bell doesn’t process what he’s seeing. Geno will strand another 90 before football season

    • RedAlert

Well said Indy … Bell DOES NOT Process what he is seeing indeed … especially in game …. great point

      • bug

He’s simply the worst manager in the history of the game.

  158. Bet on Red

AG placed into an impossible situation there. Half the team is injured half the team is trying to win. Boez needs a suspension and i suspect there will be benches cleared Tomorrow for the smallest issue. Reds need to take the rest.

    • Indy Red Man

The Reds will take the rest (Cubs 31-18 at home) like Shogo will start the 10th on 2nd

      • Bet on Red

maybe before Baez pulled his stunt. Cubs trade announced… their teardown is already underway Reds still have things to fight for and now the Baez incident will provoke them.

  159. Gpod

I’m sorry, but with 6 outs to get why would anyone put Osish in the game? Bell got what he deserved

  160. BatsLeftThrowsRight

Their futility with the bases loaded and nobody out tonight and not scoring is duly noted. The team that can never land that knockout punch, always one hit or one pitch away.

The useless walks by the entire staff continues. Just not a very good baseball team, lost in the land of mediocrity. Garrett’s nonsense came back to haunt him, Baez imitating his sweeping nonsense last time teams met comes back to bite AG and the Reds.

Just an awful loss, nothing will change. Geno will be out there producing nothing again tomorrow. Bullpen burned threw arms tonight. Reds awaken a dead team, just unfortunate that this Reds team doesn’t know anything about putting a team away.

    • bug

I concur with everything you just said. Only thing you left out is our manager,..who makes all those calls. Instead of using our best bullpen pitchers to nail down a 5 to 3 win,..he always uses our broke armed bums to lose the lead. Then he’ll go to our better pitchers (Hembree and/or Garrett,..or whomever is temporarily pitching decent) when the situation is basically hopeless and all they need is a sac fly to win the game. Point being,..he uses thegood ones anyway,..but just to lose the game, and not to nail down a victory. Santillan should have pitched the 8th and 9th last night. He was GREAT. Then also it’s Bell that keeps sending out Geno to strand the bases loaded game after game. Einstein said the very definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result each time. We desperately need a new manager. Bell has lost 20 games for us this year by making the same bonehead moves over and over and expecting a different result.

  161. kevinz

    Stinks to lose always.
    Team lose for sure.
LOB late when could extend the lead.
    Stay fighting reds.
    Onto the next.
