The Cincinnati Reds (45-42) will try to rebound from a tough loss last night in the first of seven consecutive games against the Milwaukee Brewers (53-36). The two teams will square off tonight again at 8:10 PM. The Reds enter play 7.0 games back in the NL Central behind the Brewers.

Programing note: tonight’s game is a YouTube exclusive game. Here is the link to the game.

Or you can just watch it right here on the page.

Starting Pitchers

Wade Miley has been everything the Reds could have asked and more. They need one more big start from him tonight. This lineup should be a fairly good matchup for Miley. He has a career 5.92 ERA against the Brewers. Miley has not faced the Brewers in 2021, but last year he did not allow run in 5.0 innings (1 start, 1 relief). Miley had a 2.67 ERA in 7 starts at then Miller Park in his lone season with the Brewers in 2018.

Brewers left-handed SP, Eric Lauer started the season in the rotation, got moved to the bullpen, and he now seems to have settled back into the rotation. His last two starts have been really good: 12.1 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 6 BB, 10 K. Those starts were at home against the Rockies and at the Pirates. Hopefully the Reds offense came ruin his mojo. Lauer made back-to-back starts against the Reds last month (both Reds wins): 9.0 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 8 BB, 9 K. The Reds also rocked Lauer in his lone start against them in 2020: 3.0 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 2 K.

Starting Lineups

Reds Brewers
1. Jonathan India (2B)
2. Jesse Winker (LF)
3. Nick Castellanos (RF)
4. Joey Votto (1B)
5. Eugenio Suárez (3B)
6. Aristides Aquino (CF)
7. Kyle Farmer (SS)
8. Tucker Barnhart (C)
9. Wade Miley (P)
1. Luis Urias (3B)
2. Willy Adames (SS)
3. Christian Yelich (LF)
4. Avisail Garcia (RF)
5. Tyrone Taylor (CF)
6. Jace Peterson (2B)
7. Keston Hiura (1B)
8. Manny Pina (C)
9. Eric Lauer (P)

The Reds have been weird this year against left-handed pitching. The Reds are 10-7, but they have a .688 team OPS vs LHP, the sixth worst in MLB. Even more perplexing is that the Reds have some really good individual wRC+ vs LHP: Castellanos (146), Stephenson (143), India (140), Farmer (135) and Aquino (125). Winker, Votto, Naquin and Barnhart all don’t hit LHP well, but you would expect that. The big stinker for the Reds has been Suarez. From 2018-2020, Suarez had a 149 wRC+. This year he is at an abysmal 27 wRC+.

Tyler Stephenson being out of the lineup tonight is just brutal. He has been a great hitter vs LHP. The reasoning given by Bell is that Barnhart has been Miley’s personal catcher.

Conclusion

The Reds obviously really need a win tonight. Their prospects of having a winning 7-game stretch against the Brewers really go down if they can’t get it done tonight. Tonight’s pitching matchup looks good for the Reds. The time is now. Go Reds!

I hope the benefits of Barnhart catching outweigh the benefits of Tyler S hitting. Let’s win.

  2. Bred

Thanks Nick. TS not starting goes against Matchup Bell’s nature. I wonder if it is a request made by Miley. I would have never thought Miley would go all Steve Caralton to get his catcher. Maybe Bell is hiding that TS’s hand is less than right after getting plunked the other day.

  3. Roger Garrett

Could be but I believe I read where Tucker has caught all of Miley’s starts so far.

  4. LDS

If it’s a personal catcher issue then Sit Votto. It’s not that hard

  5. Old-school

Barnhart has caught 13/14 miley starts
Catching situation is great. Just need the DH in 2022 Stephenson bat can play 145 games at C/1B/DH

Votto can DH 40 games next year

    • Melvin

More and more of the baseball traditionalists, including me, are going to the side of the DH. There’s just not enough hitting to begin with these days.

      • oklared

DH maybe not in our favor tonight.

      • LDS

So if he were DH, JV would suddenly hit LH’ers?

      • Old-school

Joey isnt sitting against lefties till 2023…but baby steps with the DH in 2022. The whole reason Matt Davidson and Scott Heineken were on the roster were because they didn’t threaten Votto. What if the Reds traded a single A flyer to the Rockies for CJ Cron – a proven 1b RH bat with a .900 OPS against lefties and legit RH bench bat?

That would threaten Votto and cause WW3.

Suarez is playing 3b this year and next year no matter what. No idea where Moose goes in 2022- probably DH so Stephenson can platoon except when Miley pitches.

  6. J

As if it’s not bad enough to keep TS on the bench against a lefty, Bell has decided a guy who (literally) hits like a pitcher against lefties should bat 5th. I hope it works out, but there’s no baseball-related reason that can possibly justify it. Winning is obviously not the top priority for this organization.

    • Roger Garrett

They want to win there way which obviously hasn’t nor will work.

  7. Old-school

Lance Mccalister retweeted an “umpire auditor” twitter post

Last night home plate umpire was responsible for 9/10 worst calls in all of MLB. All 9 were balls called strikes by 3 inches out of the zone. Two of those were Jesse Winkers final at bat

    • Old-school

C trent has a different umpire auditing tweet and its worse

Brewers got 0.12 net favored runs based on home plate umpire

For all the dialogue- objective bad umpiring in big series should be a bigger issue. Votto and Winker got really bad calls

      • Mark Moore

Wow … just … WOW!! It’s worse than I even imagined.

  8. JB

I’m fine with Barnhart catching. I just dont see why Stephenson cant play first and Votto sits against the lefty tonight. Why not send Lopez back to AAA where he can play every day. Bringing him up to sit the bench is a waste.

    • Melvin

I have a feeling Bell and krall are at odds over Lopez and Heineman.

    • RedAlert

Bell is and always will be clueless

      • AllTheHype

@ Frankie, Counsell has done more with a lesser team, by far.

      • Tom Reeves

I always wonder with the people who bash players and managers/coaches on a frequent basis – if their job had fans following their work performance, would those fans be bashing that person’s performance?

      • Frankie Tomatoes

        AllTheHype

The Brewers were picked to be better than the Reds by every projection system around. Very few people or projection systems felt like they had less talent – they all seemed to think they had more talent.

PECOTA from Baseball Prospectus had the Reds at 79-83 and the Brewers at 89-73. https://www.mlb.com/news/2021-pecota-projections-breakdown

Counsell has done a fine job. Bell has his team outperforming what everyone thought they would do and it’s still not nearly enough and half of the fan base thinks he should be fired.

  9. Brian Rutherford

Good luck tonight guys. Reds fans everywhere are in your corner!

I assume everyone here are baseball fans in general so I highly recommend you check out the HR the reliever from San Diego hit off Sherzer last night. 28 yr old rookie who grew up in San Diego didn’t even have his own gloves or bats to hit with. The guy who does the call for the Padres has his own HOF moment, it was just perfect.

Anyway, here’s hoping for good luck tonight. Go Reds!

    • Old -school

Thats like the Reds AA catcher who took Bieber deep in spring training. If you have a bat- you are dangerous as joe nuxhall frequently said

    • Mark Moore

Got to love something like that if, as you say, you are a baseball fan. And I am. I found a wool cap from the Negro League Museum at an antique mall. Over 20 team logos represented and I even messaged with the NLM’s FB page. It’s been 20+ years since they produced it. Quite a find for a baseball fan.

  10. Roger Garrett

I said this on another post but will shorten it up.Bell is told who to play and when to play them.He is well aware of Joey’s numbers against lefties and how far Eugenio has fell since 2019 but the front office say they are to play. They also know we need pen help and have needed a legit short stop since the start of the season.Bell wants to win just like we do and knows this is not his best lineup but he has to win playing the players he is told to play.Bob is old school and he will have it his way and he owns the team and writes the checks if we win it will be his way. This is all on ownership. Its amazing to me we are above 500 so lets enjoy the wins and not let the losses bother us so much. Its not going to change unless Bob changes.

    • Old-school

      Yup .
And Bell option for 2022 gets picked up and probably sooner rather than later. All star break would not surprise me

    • DataDumpster

I am endlessly confused by Bell’s lineups and tonight is a good example considering the stats Nick has presented. I’ve have been quite critical of Bell for this and other reasons but you are saying he really isn’t managing the team (except for the myriad double switches and in game nonsense)? That’s a little far for me but if so; just about everything pertaining to this team should not be supported in anyway from now forward.

    • Tom Reeves

If Bob is picking the players who play, he’s doing a heck of a job getting this team above .500.

  11. Dennis Westrick

Having bailed last night after the Reds batted in the top of the 3rd (and I use the term batted loosely), I went back and looked at the box score and the play-by-play on ESPN. 1) Mahle was his own worst enemy by walking 4 batters, one HBP and a botched fielding attempt. To his credit he gutted it out thru 6 innings. The reality is if he hadn’t issued the 4 walks he likely could have pitched the 7th inning! 2) The Reds batters were atrocious early in the game with the bases loaded. 3) The winning blow (HR) by the Brewers was typical of many past Reds bullpen failures in that the home run was preceded by a bloop single. Other times it’s a walk or error before surrendering the HR. It appeared that the team as a whole was not focused from the get go! Hopefully they will rebound tonight with Miley on the mound. Miley generally pitches to contact and will make the worst hitting team in the NL earn their runs, if any! Go Reds!

  12. Rex

what is all this you tubing the kids are carrying on about?

what is the RED’s record when on you tube?

    • Bet on Red

the last reds you tube game was the 20 to 4 beat down from the Giants at home. That is the only other game i think

  13. Bet on Red

Well the lesson is that if you throw a no hitter, then you get to say who catches. Did I mention that the last you tube reds game announcers were horrible. Hope it isnt the same crew. Reds need to jump on this guy who has been lulled into a false sence of security facing COL and PIT.

  14. Frankie Tomatoes

    Smells like a winner tonight!

    • Mark Moore

Or, if you’re Nirvana, it smells like teen spirit … or, if you’re Weird Al, it smells like Nirvana 🙂

      • Frankie Tomatoes

I’m Weird Al, but the 80s stuff!

      • Mark Moore

Speaking frankly, Frankie, I think my favorite is “Frank’s 2000-inch TV”

  15. Eddie

We should trade moose (if possible though he still hurt) for Story, trade Suarez for Bryant and Nick and Aquino for meadows and shogo for some pitchers. Also sucks tonight game won’t be on tv so means no reds live pregame tonight because it’s on YouTube so dumb

    • Mark Moore

We can all dream of miracle trades, can’t we …

    • Bet on Red

Shogo for shohei otani while we are listing trades that are never going to happen

    • LDS

Suarez for Story? The Rockies may go for that, maybe. But Moustakas, not going to happen. He costs too much and hasn’t played a full year with Cin yet. And if you’re trading Castellanos & AA both, I’d say you’d want more than Meadows. Shogo? Who is trading pitchers for another part time player? Way too optimistic I think. Or you expect to find a sucker as clueless as the Reds FO.

  16. Mark Moore

Stat jus showed that Bell is only 7 games under .500

How many games have we lost against the Rocks and Friars?

  17. Mark Moore

7 pitches in and the kid slaps another one through the oppo side.

  18. JB

You think with WINKER being in the league for a few years Plesac would know his name isnt WINKLER.

  19. Indy Red Man

Nick 6 for 29 in July and Wink is worse. This is not the time for a slump

  20. Indy Red Man

Cmon Geno. I know stranding 8 is hard to top, but I believe in you. 2 here and you have 3 more at-bats

  21. 2020ball

    Reds are playing! Ready, set….COMPLAIN!

Anyway, I’m very confused Stephensen isnt in the line-up tonight. That said, Reds are the second in the NL for the wild card to a team everyone had already punched a ticket for the postseason before the season started. Very happy I get to watch the Reds be in that conversation, and heres to meaningful baseball! Heres to something to complain about!

  22. Mark Moore

Thanks, Geno … (hard eye roll)

  23. Bet on Red

not going to bench him in MIL where there are not enough reds fans to boo him off the field but the only thing Suarez managed to do there is degrade MIL catcher’s batting ability. Swung at ball 4

  24. J

Again, maybe not such a great idea to bat someone who literally hits as well as a pitcher in the middle of the lineup. I mean, if winning is a priority.

    • Dennis Westrick

Absolute madness to bat someone who’s not hitting his weight in the No. 5 spot! Tough to watch Geno take apparent strikes and then wail away at balls well outside the strike zone. The Reds have now stranded 8 runners in the first 2 innings of last night’s game and inning 1 tonight!

      • Roger Garrettg

Aquino may have been the better choice to hit in the 5 spot tonight.

  25. RedAlert

Nothing to see here . Suarez strikes out with runners on . He is brutal and Bell keeps sticking name on lineup card . Stupid , stupid , stupid , stupid managerial
decision . Bell is hard- headed .

  26. Indy Red Man

Adames is basically the difference between these 2 teams. If they still had a .600 ops SS and ours was .900 then its anyones ballgame

  27. ClevelandRedsFan

I wonder if Stephenson is hurt. He got hit right on his hand while batting on Wednesday. It could be a day to day thing.

    • Indy Red Man

Tucker is Miley’s catcher per Bell. Stephenson is fine

  28. Roger Garrett

He has helped them for sure.Guy will be there for awhile.

  29. Bet on Red

alright, can already tell this ump is better then last nights one. Miley doing Miley things. Already put 700 WLW broadcast over the YT broadcast

  30. J

People keep saying they won’t sit Suarez because he makes too much money. That might be the reason, but I don’t quite understand why teams behave this way. If the Reds win, absolutely nobody cares if they’re overpaying a guy who isn’t playing much. If the Reds lose, everyone gets mad about the overpaid guy who plays every day and isn’t producing.

    • ClevelandRedsFan

Angels not just sat but released Albert Pujols, who makes more and is a for sure first ballot HOFer. From what I understand, locusts did not instantly descend on Southern California.

      • J

I thought I heard something like that, but assumed it must have been a dream.

      • AllTheHype

Angels also started Pujols at 1B for the previous 4 years when he was worse than a replacement level player. They only released him this year because it was his last contract year, and the possibility of recouping value has passed. Like or not, that’s what happens with big contracts and I expect the same with Geno.

  31. Mark A Verticchio

If Winker and Nick C. can’t hit chalk up another loss and a very long weekend.

  32. Old-school

This is bizarre indication of future of MLB.
YouTube broadcast is giving gambling odds on Adames total bases while he is hitting with the over under at 1.5 . Are you serious?

Indy needs a full time job with RLN.

    • Indy Red Man

      Insta double would’ve paid off)))

    • Doug Gray

We could probably increase the revenue here at the site if we had some gambling-adjacent content….. lol

      • Old-school

If you could get a game cast screen aligned with the game thread and maybe an option to bet with Indy handicapping his best bets of the day….you could beat MLB.

  33. Roger Garrett

A 6 pitch inning by their pitcher and would have been 5 if not for the error on Tuckers’ grounder.Miley swings at the first pitch as well.Guess I will go for now.Just doesn’t seem we are ready tonight.Maybe they were good pitches to hit.

  34. Old-school

    This is an awful broadcast.
Constant MLB marketing with 4 screens of a chat and highlights and a poll and then constant commercials. If this is the future of MLB- I am out. Horse -racing might come back

    Unwatchable.

  35. Mark A Verticchio

The Reds hitters are very hard to watch right now. Miley needs to pitch a shut out to get to extra innings.

  36. Old-school

I am out. This media is terrible.

    Ill listen to the radio.

Good luck with those 25 year olds paying attention.

    • Dennis Westrick

Living in Central Florida don’t have a lot of options to follow the Reds. No radio and only on TV if the MLB Network gets tired of showing the Yankees! Just follow the delayed play-by-play on ESPN website!

      • Old-school

It’s like watching cnbc with 5 split screens..

A ticker at the bottom ..4 talking heads on split screens, a poll in the right corner, some links to gambling and a player in the dugout being interviewed.

Oh..by the way…a baseball game as the 6th option

  37. VaRedsFan

Jesse went to left field for a hit in his 1st game after the day off.
Right back to pull happy and rolling over ever since.

  38. Indy Red Man

Meatball right down the middle and Nick does nothing. If we can’t score on Houser/Lauer then forget it. Woodruff/Peralta coming up and we’ll get 2-3 of them after the break. Trying to stay positive, but Geno just curbs my enthusiasm.

    • JB

Hate to kick you while your down but Reds get Mets for 3 after Milwaukee series. Reds will get Degrom.

  39. Mark Moore

Not playing any audio and it seems like that’s a good choice. We’re watching other stuff, so I’m basically monitoring the game anyway. I wonder how many more YouTube games we’ll have to endure this year.

  40. vared

Winker now south of .300. Hard to believe. Offense needs a jump start from somebody.

    • LDS

The question is whether he’ll be above .300 again.

  41. Bet on Red

Really fast game today. those of you who comment on Sadak every day now can truly understand what poor broadcasting is.

    • JB

Sadak sees his homework and comes at you with facts. These guys have no facts. Plesac saying Lorenzen was suppose to be closing for the Reds. No he was suppose to be a starter.

    • Old-school

I will never criticize Sadak again.

  42. Dennis Westrick

As Earl Weaver used to say when he managed the Orioles back in the 70’s & 80’s we need a BLOOP & a BLAST!

  43. Broseph

Trying to get to the break as quick as they can. Yikes

  44. Bet on Red

Lauer leaving cookies up there to be bashed, to each batter this inning save votto, barnhart finally made him pay. Aquino just got beat back to the bag….maybe… in addition to the poor announcing, the camera work for yt needs work too… got the lead anyway

  45. J

Anyone who bet the game’s first run would be Barnhart driving in Suarez is due for a nice payout.

  46. Indy Red Man

Yelich comes up with the ball right in front of him, but AA gets thrown out anyway. 2 men in scoring position and Miley is basically a slow Shogo w/the bat. Beautiful clutch hitting by Tucker atleast…..all year he’s done it!

Fundamentals. They sort of really matter when you play every single day

  47. LDS

Reds need a new third base coach as well? Maybe they can bribe Vince Coleman to come to work for them and teach them to run the bases. Sure been a bunch of games derailed this year by poor base running.

  48. Old-school

    Ronald Acuna is hitting .281
    Freddie Freeman .271
    Bryce Harper .278
    JT Realmuto .263

Winker and Castellanos will be ok.

  49. Doc

Tyler Mahle took 51 pitches to get through 2 innings. Wade Miley took 53 to get through 4 innings.

No wonder we have bullpen problems. Mahle could learn from Miley about what it means to pitch.

    • Mark Moore

Mahle’s a nibbler far too much

      • Dennis Westrick

Like a vegetarian with a single stalk of celery!

  50. Indy Red Man

Catcher has a banged up hand. Hit-n-run here

    • Bet on Red

i would agree except India is playing banged up, might reduce his speed

  51. Mark Moore

Time for Nick C. to get off the schneid … can’t let Winker working a BB out do him.

    • Jim

A first grader would know that Votto is the worst player on the roster to bat 4th!!! I just don’t understand the problem why Bell and management can’t see that in front of their eyes. UNBELIEVABLE. !!!!!!!!! We will never win with Votto in the lineup anymore.

      • Doug Gray

The worst player on the roster to bat 4th? Art Warren has had 1 career at-bat. It came in 2015 at the Seattle Mariners complex in rookie ball. I’d bet a lot of money that he would be worse at hitting 4th than the *checks notes* above-average hitting Joey Votto.

  52. Dennis Westrick

Votto is pressing and cannot even make decent contact against lefty pitching! Would like to have had TS up there in that situation!

  53. Indy Red Man

What a play by Miley! Then he buckles down and strands 2. Cmon offense? Lauer just throwing 92-93 and half werer right down broadway. He can’t even get his breaking stuff over and we’ll still doing next to nothing?

The late great Joe Morgan on Youtube. We all flapped our elbows in little league in tribute!

  54. ClevelandRedsFan

These announcers sound like a group of dudes who don’t realize they are on a Zoom call.

  55. Dennis Westrick

Farmer is generally useless with a bat tonight!

  56. J

Aquino walks, Farmer swings at the first pitch, which isn’t even close to being a strike. These guys just don’t care what’s going on, they’re going to do whatever they feel like doing.

    • Dennis Westrick

Yep! It’s called plate discipline! Know the situation and adjust! If a pitcher is struggling and just walked the batter in front of you, you might want to be selective and take the first pitch!

  57. Mark A Verticchio

This offense is sad and getting worse everyday.

    • oklared

If our offense is sad what is Milwaukee’s?

  58. JB

I’m thinking Miley is going to have to throw a shutout.

  59. Indy Red Man

Brewers +120 live. I’d take it if I wasn’t a Reds fan. Teams see our starter 3x and yet Bell can’t give them a quick hook because they’re still better then the pen. We’re losing again. The offense is doing nothing against a mediocre pitcher. Did nothing yesterday. Did nothing against KCs starters

    • Old-school

Adames hits the over with 3 total bases…..as if I woke up today wondering the over under on Adames TB against the Reds. I woke up hoping the Reds could win. MLB provides the updates during the game after he singles.

  60. JB

Hard to believe Plesac once played for Brewers. (Tongue in cheek) The way he talks them up you would think he is still on the payroll.

  61. Indy Red Man

Yelich back to mvp form is like Geno back to 2019. Its not happening. Back injuries rob you of that explosion. You have to hit with your arms and its not the same

  62. Dennis Westrick

A couple more runs would be nice and would keep Hader’s boney butt on the bench in the bullpen!

  63. Indy Red Man

Chubby Shogo with a little league triple!!!

  64. magi210

Miley helping himself. Let’s get him in.

  65. Mark Moore

Wade says, “OK you mooks. I’ll do it myself.”

Now let’s see India bring him in (hopefully without extreme effort on Miley’s part).

  66. Roger Garrett

Miley just may shut them out.Dude is money.Does he have a team option for next year?If so just pay him and lets move on.Just a pro.Hope the younger players watch him and I am sure his work ethic and the way he prepares is why he can get the most out of what he’s got to give.

  73. Roger Garrett

Joey has hit righties its the right move.Make em pay Eugenio.

  74. MBS

What an embarrassing strikeout! They intentionally walk Votto to get to you and you whiff on strike 3.

    • bug

Did you really expect anything else but a K?

      • MBS

Not really expecting, but still disappointed. I think he needs another benching. I wouldn’t start him until the 2nd Milwaukee series is over. He needs a real wake up call, and or less responsibility.

    • RedsMonk65

Agree. He is really hurting the team right now. I would sit him a couple games and start Lopez. See what happens. Long term, I do home Geno gets straightened out, but we can’t continue this way and expect to catch a team like the Brewers.

  75. Mark A Verticchio

The Suarez situation is getting harder to watch everyday. Bell isn’t helping anybody by continuing to run him out there especially Suarez himself.

  76. Indy Red Man

Only reason Suarez doesn’t strand 8 every night is the guys in front of him. If you do your thing then he’ll do his.

  77. Bet on Red

79 pitches I keep him in till he is gassed

  78. JB

Let’s hope Suarez goes home on the break and flushes the bad mojo out of his body. Lord he is a hot mess.

Geno strikes out with 2 runners in scoring position! Shocking!

Imagine if just half the runners that Suarez left stranded over the last two days had scored. Totally different outcome last night. Now imagine it for the whole season to date. Tell me again why he has to play. LAA as way smarter than the Reds

    • AllTheHype

Why were the LAA smarter? Pujols started at 1B for the prev 4 years when he was worse than replacement level, and they finally released him in his contract year. Let’s hope we aren’t stuck with Geno starting until 2024 like the LAA did with Pujols.

      • LDS

Took them too long granted but do you think the Reds would have done it.

  81. J

Must not ever pinch hit for Suarez. It would hurt some feelings.

  82. JB

Nice throw by Winker. Makes up for last night

  83. RedAlert

What has Suarez gotta do to get benched ???!!!! This is beyond ridiculous – Bell is a complete joke for continuing to pencil his name on that card in the starting lineup . He wouldn’t be starting on any other team in MLB except for this farce of a manager .

    • bug

He could bat .000 for the entire year, and they would still pencil him in the line up. Long ago I realized there was no rhyme nor reason for it,..unless he has the goods on someone high up. Blackmail,..it has to be. That’s the only way you could allow one player to lose season after season for you. I can’t think of any other reason they would play him.

    • AllTheHype

What does he have to do to bat 7th or 8th if he is going to play? Betting him 5th is beyond stupid.

  84. RedsMonk65

Nice defensive play by Da Wink!

  85. Old-school

Broadcast just put up Reds lowest batting averages in reds history with qualified at bats,
    Suarez 2000 4th lowest.
    2 guys in 1800’s 2nd and 3ed
Suarez 2021 at .178 or whatever worst in history of REDLEGS.
Suffice it to say FSO/Bally Sports would never report that but its official.

Eugenio is officially and historically the worst hitter in Reds history and its not getting better. Send that memo to Phil Castellini and his marketing team to try and polish that lipstick on a pig

    Suarez 2

    • Dennis Westrick

There you go! Insulting farm animals again! I’m calling PETA!

  86. JEFF MORRIS

Probably not….but I am at least going to ask the question. ANY possible way the Reds could trade Suarez before the trade deadline of July 31st? He needs a change of scenery, and the Reds could use some relief pitching. Or…is his contract too big for some team to take on?

  87. TyGuy88

Geno needs to be benched more than 1-2 games. Quite frankly, he should be platooned. He was awful last season also. You gotta swallow the pride and forget about his contract. He hurts this offense.

  88. Indy Red Man

    Omg….the defense this inning!!!! Wow!!!

    • Tom Mitsoff

Look back at those two plays if the Reds hold the lead.

      • RojoB

Why are they so Jekyll and Hyde on defense? Frustrating

  89. magi210

Reds flashing the leather this inning.

  90. RedsMonk65

Defensively, at least, we could do much worse than Kyle Farmer at SS. He can pick and toss.

    • JB

Totally agree. He takes alot of crap on here but where would they be without him. Suarez would have 30 errors by now at Short.

    • Dennis Westrick

I’ll give him that! Just wish he was a better hitter to offset the void in the No. 5 spot of today’s batting order!

  91. Bet on Red

got to think that Moustakis displaces Suarez straight up when he comes back.

    • Indy Red Man

Or even Senzel? If he’s ever available?

      • RedsMonk65

Kind of ironic, huh? Senzel had to learn new positions because he was blocked at third by Suarez. Now that Suarez has apparently lost his mojo, Senzel isn’t available. He — Senzel — has to be wondering what he has to do to catch a break!

    • Bet on Red

Or him… forgot about him for a minute.

  92. Mark Moore

Watching on MLB Network … these guys do make Sadak sound better. Like, way better. So many voices. So many words. So little content. And these are the MLB analysts they choose to call the game? Heaven help us all.

    • RedsMonk65

One of them is former Red Danny Graves.

  93. JA

Brewer’s manager had just playin serious. IBB to 4B to face the weakest 5B of the league and certainly worked.
Now JB was outplayed by the opp mngr.

    • Mark Moore

Counsel is the real deal as I see it.

      • Tom Mitsoff

No question. He always has them in it, even when the talent isn’t first-rate.

      • RojoB

Now wait a minute, Tom. That doesn’t fit the narrative for defense of David Bell. But i think what you say is true of good to great managers.

  94. Tom Mitsoff

It will be very interesting to see if Miley comes back for the eighth. He’s at 88 pitches. Bell has been letting the starters get close to 100.

  95. Mark A Verticchio

Why not pinch hit Naquin against right hander, plus he is a better centerfielder.

    • Mark Moore

Probably a scheduled day off … you know … rules.

    • J

At this point, I’m convinced most of these decisions have nothing to do with statistical probabilities, and everything to do with Bell having some sort of ulterior motive.

  96. Indy Red Man

Here is where Bell is in between a rock and a hard place. He loves Heath Hembree with the sparkling 5.14 era Brach needs some rest. I’d go AG if they had Yelich/Chris Farley back to back, but Vogelbach is hurt. No easy answers. Injuries and a front office that turned off their phones. If another GM called our front office they’d get a disconnected dial tone.

    • Mark Moore

I wondered where Mr. Farley was.

Do we at least give Wade a chance at the 8th?

    • Bet on Red

Tore his hammy a week ago against the diamondbacks. would the strangest play. Tore it rounding third and came up lame 50 feet away from the plate and the D backs just sit there and stare as he limps to the plate.

  97. Bet on Red

With the extra long break, There is no pitch count for Miley, either he can get 6 outs or he cant. That is the only factor here I think

    • Mark Moore

Good point. I forgot he’ll get an extra few days no matter what.

  98. Old-school

    MIley ain’t coming out.
He’s the best Reds pitcher and its not close

  99. Mark A Verticchio

Strickland would by far be the best arm in the Reds bull pen, he is the Brewers 4th or 5th guy. It is hard to beat somebody under those conditions.

    • Roger Garrett

I was surprised the Reds didn’t try him out.Guy was pretty good for the Giants

  100. Reddawg2012

I don’t know what makes me more nervous. Miley going through the Brewers order for a 4th time, or Bell going to anyone else in the bullpen.

    • Mark Moore

I’d lean toward the BP. We do have a No-No from Miley. That speaks something to me.

  101. Roger Garrett

You right Indy but its the hand he has to deal with along with everything else every night. We have been good in low scoring games lately and I go with Hembree to close and see what happens. If it works it works. If not we play tomorrow any way.

  102. Mark Moore

Even my wife said that wasn’t a strike. Counsel is going to get tossed yet. These umps just keep getting worse.

  103. Indy Red Man

This ump….lolllllllll. He’s as bad or worse then the clown last night, but its working for Miley!!

  104. Mark Moore

Is that Plesac that sounds like a chain smoker with a cold?

    • JB

You mean the guy who cant stop talking about the Brewers?

  105. Mark Moore

That part of Geno I love! And an interference DP to boot … kind of like hitting a bonus ball number on a pinball machine.

How many are going to get tossed here?

    • Roger Garrett

Loved the pin ball machines and could beat em up back in the day.Hand and eye co-ordination was really good 50 + years ago.Now I would drop the quarter several times before getting it in the slot.Do they still have those things?

  106. magi210

That seems like a terrible interference call.

    • Mark Moore

It’s the rolling into Farmer that did it.

      • RojoB

Yep Adames is a SS he knows better. If he’s thinking about protecting Farmer he sticks it into the bag.

        Those boos are sweet music.

        Now don’t waste it, Reds!

    • Tom Mitsoff

I agree. I’d be furious if I was a Brewers fan.

      • RojoB

Me too, but as a Reds fan i’m happy

      • Old-school

Adames had his hand up and rolled 4 feet over the bag with no reason.
No way reds turn double play but runners cant just roll continuously thru second base 4 feet to side of SS with their hands up

We re witnessing the performance of the year by Wade Miley

  107. Indy Red Man

Geno’s defense is B- C+ at 3B. He booted that one in KC the other night, but that play was unreal. I doubt more then 5-6 guys make that play.

    • Mark Moore

It’s Jekyll and Hyde for him. He’ll make a great play like that and then boot one any high school player should make.

    • Indy Red Man

You have to be able to grab the base when your slide is complete and he went 10 feet past it. Player safety issue

  108. Bet on Red

how noone has been tossed in the last two days is beyond me. Good Job by the umps on calling that blatant interference /s

  109. Tom Mitsoff

I am LOVING letting Miley hit! Let him go out there and see if he can retire the Brewers in order.

    • Tom Mitsoff

I’m guessing if anyone gets on, Miley will be relieved. I imagine Bell will have both Hembree and Garrett up. Seems as though Hembree has become the “closer,” at least for the moment.

  110. RedsMonk65

Captain Jack has tats to cover up the bruises.re

  111. Mark Moore

My wife just said India needs hash mark tattoos representing how many HBP’s he’s endured. And he’s got one less than Farmer.

  112. Indy Red Man

Lefty Jace Peterson coming up 3rd. Navarez hitting .320 on the bench and Tellez the power hitter they picked up. AG for the save if they need him. You don’t want a righty there

    • Indy Red Man

All their big sticks are lefty. I’d go AG here without a doubt

  113. JB

Just seems like Garcia loves Reds pitching.

  114. Mark Moore

The Hulk new he was out with the first batter he let on. Great night and he won’t be the loser in any case. Let’s see if we can manage to get 3 outs before they score 2 runs or more.

  115. RojoB

Double H better rock it like Triple H

    • RojoB

      Man—he did it!

A little help from Blue behind the plate but it’s poetic justice.

  116. Old-school

    Miley busted his tail
    What a gamer
Bullpen has to close this out
No more excuses. Season on the line now and Hembree accepts that responsibility

  117. Indy Red Man

    Payback…..lollllllllllllllllllllll

    These guys are HORRRRRible

  118. Old-school

That’s awful umpiring and make up for last night. Terrible call. No way that’s a strike out and I’m a reds fans

  119. JB

I love this ump. He has called a great game. Lol

  120. magi210

I expect a large amount of “3 blind mice” being played by the organist for the rest of the series.

  121. bug

That’s what I’m talkin about, Hembre!!!

  122. Bet on Red

Wadey Miley the stopper, back to six out. Solid outing by HH as well

  123. Indy Red Man

HH isn’t that great, but he will strike some fools out)) 29 ip 50 Ks

  124. Tom Mitsoff

Gotta say, Hembree looked like a real closer there. He dominated.

    • RojoB

      He wasn’t afraid

      Mahle should take notes

      • RojoB

Mahle battles and I really like him, but he should have challenged the Brewers—the LAST place hitting team in the league

  125. Mark Moore

4 inches off the plate!!! For crying out loud we need the robo-zone. And I’m happy with this one, except it cuts both ways.

    • Mark Moore

Sorry – I had to pause it and I’m a little behind.

    • RojoB

Yep- what’s sauce for the goose…

  126. JB

Nice job Hembree. I’m glad they went with him.

  127. Old-school

    Wade Miley awesome
Stop the something is wrong with Winker narrative.
Backfired last year and will backfire to those advancing that narrative again this year. Phil Ervin isnt coming back. Winker is an All star.

  128. RedsMonk65

Reds win. Gutsy performances by several, especially Miley (India, Winker and Barnhart too). Hembree nice job closing it out. Reds needed this game. Great rebound from last night !!!

    • RojoB

And the leather showed up in spades!!!

But why they gotta be so inconsistent on D?

I sure will take it tonight and hope that this is a turning point for their mindfulness in the field

      • RedsMonk65

        One of life’s great mysteries…

    • TR

It’s nice to see Hembree coming along. When they recover from injury, he can join Antone and Sims as an alternate closer until something more permanent is worked out in that department.

  129. Mark Moore

That’s got to be a major boost for our guys. 6 back now. Tough games coming, but we’re showing we can do it.

    • RojoB

I would love for them to take the next two from this fragile Brewers team going into the ASB

      • TR

With the BrewCrew, the Reds need to take a lead into the late innings.

  130. Indy Red Man

Wade, Farmer, Wink, and Geno all had sparkling defensive plays! Really crucial win there. I think we get Woodruff & Peralta so you can’t go 0-2 vs the back of their rotation

  131. Rex

I enjoyed the tube…sadak needed a night off

  132. Roger Garrett

HH picked up Miley.Got to love those two and the BIG BOY pants they brought with them tonight.HH should close so give him the ninth with the lead.

    • Indy Red Man

I combined 2020-21 for HH. 17 hrs allowed in 47 innings;;;lol. Thats his kryptonite, but AG is probably worse. Why not til Antone gets back. Maybe Warren sometime with a 2-3 run lead?

  133. VaRedsFan

I love pitchers that pitch…not throw.

    • TR

They either have it or they don’t. Miley certainly has it, so far, this season.

  134. dhmorgan

This was an “interesting” game for me.
For some reason, there was a YouTube streaming interruption and I’m not watching the last half of inning 8.
So it’ll be nice to watch the rest of the game knowing that the Red’s won.

  135. J

Pitching, defense, and a tiny bit of offense. The Reds out-Brewered the Brewers tonight.

  136. JEFF MORRIS

Wishful thinking, but could you imagine back in 2012, NL Series Game 5 versus the Giants. Game 5 starting pitcher for the Reds, Wade Miley (with the way he pitched tonight)

  137. kevinz

Nice W Miley was on it.
If pitching can stay in the 3’s.
Like has since end of May.
This team can still be a Problem.

  138. Richard Kramer

What do the Reds do about Suarez?
