The Cincinnati Reds are going to have two starters in the 2021 Major League Baseball All-Star game. Nick Castellanos and Jesse Winker finished 2nd and 3rd in the voting for the National League, trailing Ronald Acuña Jr. who finished with the most votes among outfielders in the league.
Without accounting for the stats in the game being played as I type this on Thursday night, here are the stats for the two players:
Jesse Winker
- .325/.404/.596
- 16 doubles
- 1 triple
- 19 home runs
- 56 runs scored
- 48 RBI
- 158 OPS+
Nick Castellanos
- .346/.396/.607
- 27 doubles
- 1 triple
- 16 home runs
- 53 runs scored
- 53 RBI
- 158 OPS+
Nick Castellanos currently leads the National League in hits (102), doubles, average, and total bases.
2021 will be the first time that the Cincinnati Reds will have at least two starting outfielders in the All-Star game since 1956. Gus Bell and Frank Robinson were the outfielders that year. If you were thinking to yourself “was that the year that Cincinnati Reds fans stuffed the ballot box?!”, no, it was not. That was the following year in 1957.
They will likely be the only Cincinnati Reds at the All-Star game. Wade Miley may have an argument, but there is a lot of starting pitchers having great seasons this year, too. Had Tejay Antone not gotten injured then perhaps he would be a true consideration for the game, too, but now that he’s back on the injured list it seems unlikely he would be selected.
Congrats to both for sure.
Fans got this right.
Based off season so far, Both did better over Betts etc.
Most deserving for both players. Interview with Jesse after the game was a must watch. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and honor bestowed upon him. While his emotions overcame him, he wore his heart on his sleeve in a most humble and appreciative way. Thanking the fans, his teammates and sharing how proud his parents are when presented with the question regarding the latter. He is a class act. Closing with his little girl at home. His daughter. Congratulations!
Congratulations to Castellanos and Winker. The Reds are not there yet but they’re on their way.
Congrats to both – they are both all-stars regardless of the voting, but it’s gratifying to see two Reds get recognized nationally. Also cool that this will be the 11th year in a row the Reds are sending at least two players to the ASG.
