Lucas Sims placed on the injured list

Earlier today the Cincinnati Reds placed Lucas Sims on the injured list with a sprained right elbow. There’s not an exact timeline yet, but David Bell said 3-4 weeks is what he’s thinking about it.

Sonny Gray scratched from his rehab start in Louisville

The rehab start for Sonny Gray in Triple-A Louisville has been pushed back from tonight to Saturday. Gray reportedly woke up with a stiff back on Wednesday and the plan is to go on Saturday assuming things turn out as expected.

Acuna is questionable. That may be the delay
Reds are 36-36 and Cards 36-38?

    • Doug Gray

It’s been a long day my friend. Fixed it! Thanks for the heads up.

      • Old-school

Sorry Doug- don’t want to be THAT poster but cant let the dirty birds get too much credit!
        You do a phenomenal job.

      • Doug Gray

Oh, ALWAYS be that guy. If I’m wrong on a fact (not an opinion), please try your best to alert me to it. I don’t want incorrect stuff out there.

  2. ClevelandRedsFan

Finally! A lineup the Reds bullpen can handle.

    • Steelerfan

      Jinx, jinx, jinx!

Also a Cleveland Reds fan so hope I am wrong.

  3. Randy in Chatt

The standings are incorrect, the Reds are 36-36 and the Cardinals are 36-38. The WLB’s are lower than the Reds in the standings right now.

    • Doug Gray

Yeah – I’m a big slacker. I need a sleep (not a nap, a sleep). I’ve corrected the standings. Thanks for the heads up.

  4. Indy Red Man

Total runs for the game is 10.5. Thats the highest I’ve ever seen at gabp. No Acuna or Ozuna. Reds are fresh while the Braves played and traveled. Hometown team needs to take this one!

    • LDS

10.5? Bell can cover that with his eyes closed. Give him time to manage.

    • Bet on Red

Already can tell that that is a no

  5. Dennis Westrick

Another important series for our Reds! The Dirty Birds are playing the bottom-feeding Pie Rats, the Cubs are off today but start a 3 game series at LA while the division-leading Brewers are off as well before starting a 3 game series against those tough Rockies! Only 3 games back in the loss column! Need a better performance from Santillan than his first 2 starts (too many walks & HBPs). No Acuna, Jr. tonight and a bullpen game for the road-weary Braves! Go Reds! Score early & often!

  6. Bet on Red

Stantillan secondary stuff looking good, obviously the mistake to Freeman but otherwise looking decent. Have to send the Braves relievers back to AAA

    • Dennis Westrick

Agree! Impressed with Santillan’s offspeed stuff! Obviously made a mistake to Freeman! Never, never, never pitch a lefty low & in! Especially to one of the best lefty hitters in MLB!

  7. Tom Mitsoff

Tell you what, India is coming on very strong very fast.

  8. Indy Red Man

Schwarber hr to lead off the game in Miami. 12 hrs since June 9)))))))

    Not thats a heater

  9. Roger Garrett

Joey looks at 3 straight with a man on third and 1 out.Naquin also looks at strike 3.

    • Bet on Red

Braves having similar problems, thinking it might be something the camera cant tell us.

      • beelicker

Solstice longest daylengths of the year maybe the lights haven’t come on yet?

  10. RedAlert

Farmer playing WAY TOO MUCH !!!!
Dude has no business starting on any MLB team – backup fine , starting NO

Thank you Big Bob for the limited options here and in the bullpen

PLEASE SELL TO A NEW OWNER

  11. Indy Red Man

Schwarber with another hr)))))) This is Babe Ruth vs 1928 pitching. How long will they keep pitching to him?

    18 for last 48 with 13 hrs

  12. Roger Garrett

Better maybe to look at trading for Schwarber. He may hit 60 at GABP alone.

    • Indy Red Man

He might, but Yankees or somebody will probably give him $30 mil/year now

  13. Roger Garrett

Wonder what it would take to get Turner from the Nats?

  14. Old-school

I would have Senzel rehab awhile at Louisville at both 3b and CF. Suarez turns 30 and hasn’t given a consistent quality at bat since 2019. He’s hitting .185 since 2019 with 500 at bats. Hes average to below avg defensively and slow and getting older.

Is there really any reason to think suarez will ever slash .260/.320/.480/.800 and be good defensively?

    • LDS

Nope, I’m not sure he’ll ever see .200 again, let alone .260. He and/or they have changed his game to his and the team’s detriment.

  15. Dennis Westrick

3 more good innings from Santillan would be nice! But, at 51 pitches through 3rd

  16. Roger Garrett

Santi says well I will try and do it myself.

  17. Indy Red Man

2-1 pitch to India called a strike. It was 4 inches outside? These umps are killers.

  18. LDS

Tells you a lot about what the league thinks of JV these days. Walk Castellanos to get to him.

    • Bet on Red

L,R,L,L is why they walked Casti with a LHP on the mound

      • LDS

And a few years ago, no one would prefer to face Votto

    • Roger Garrett

Twice had a guy at 3rd and 1 out and well.

    • LDS

And it backfired, a bit weak but I’ll take it..

  19. Roger Garrett

They all count.Way to go Joey

  20. Indy Red Man

Joey seems to be running better this year. Maybe his legs are healthier? I figured Swanson would still nip him there, but he beat it easy. He was actually moving halfway decent when he scored the winning run from 1st in Milwaukee too.

That was a great at-bat/rbi there!

  21. Old-school

Winker hits a ball 105.1 mph to freeman at first who catches the 1 hopper 6 feet from first base.

Larkin ridicules Winker for not running hard out of the box. Thanks Barry.

    • MBS

Larkin is correct, what 2 batters later Votto proved it. You just never know, that’s why you hustle.

      • Old-school

        Baseball savant/stat cast

Winker pulled a ball 105.1 mph to the first baseman who caught it 90 feet a away and 6 feet from first base. 105 mph in 90 feet is less than a second.

Votto hit a check swing 61.8 mph to the 3rd base side of the SS.

  22. Dennis Westrick

As this game progresses Reds pitchers need to avoid giving Freddy Freeman anything good to hit!

  23. Roger Garrett

Walks just have killed us this year.

    • Dennis Westrick

My biggest pet peeve for this 2021 Reds pitching staff, especially the relievers!

  24. Bet on Red

Looks like the gas tank is starting to drain. Good stuff that will play out of the bullpen, but if he cannot get through 5 regularly, he is not going to survive in the rotation when Sonny comes back

    • Indy Red Man

I don’t know if he’ll beat out Hoffman, but he’s hanging in there so far tonite. No Acuna sure helps!

      • Bet on Red

yea, he has major league stuff, would benefit from an opener or part of a bullpen game… that however would require….. a bullpen

  25. Indy Red Man

Santillan 92 mph there. Thats not going to work. His only chance is 95-96 because his offspeed is a work in progress. He competes and doesn’t nibble like Hoffman. I’ll give him that much, but his era won’t be under 5 for any length of time

    • 2020ball

I dunno bout that, he’s had pretty good control save a few pitches in the ABs he walked a guy. Guys arent tattooing his FB, he’s even thrown it by a couple guys.

      • Old-school

Cant see how Hoffman ever starts over Santillan or Vlad

Hoffman is long reliever and should be built up to throw 3-5 innings as an insurance starter and bullpen piece able to pitch multiple innings but hoffman hasnt beat out vlad or santillan or done anything to be penciled in as a starter over them

The real question if gray returns is who should be the 5th starter? Vlad or Santillan? Good problem

      • 2020ball

Indeed, I could see Santillan going to AAA to stay stretched out as a starter when Gray’s back, I’d prefer Hoffman in the pen but having him stretched out isnt a bad thing either. Honestly, I think our next SP after those guys is Greene at this point. Yet another reason I think Hoffman to the pen is prudent.

  26. Dennis Westrick

He’s battling, I’ll give him that! One more inning?

  27. Roger Garrett

Don’t follow the Braves at all but this can’t be their regular lineup is it?

    • Indy Red Man

      Acuna out
Ozuna Out for the year w/domestic abuse
      backup catcher going tonite too

      • Bet on Red

That Ozuna story was horrible. might be gone for more then the rest of the year

  28. Roger Garrett

Need to scratch out something here.

  29. Indy Red Man

I’d bunt Farmer here and pinch-hit Shogo, but Bell will probably let the inning die on the vine

    • Dennis Westrick

Can we hire you to manage this team? I was thinking the same thing! But NO! A weak flyout by Farmer who may be worse as a hitter than Suarez this year!

  30. MBS

1 run, 2 walks, 3 hits, and 6 K’s through 4 innings, and people are writing Santillan off.

    • 2020ball

I’ve seen a lot to like personally, this is the first game I’ve had a chance to watch him

    • Indy Red Man

His fb is down & his pitch count is up. They’re probably only going to ask for 1 more inning so why not try to add some runs when you can? Thats a classic Dusty move. Let the guy hit and kill an inning then pull the guy after 8 more pitches anyway.

      • 2020ball

Given our bullpen, I’m not sure there’s a bad decision there. I can see leaving him in and pulling him. I dont think it was bad to let him keep pitching.

      • 2020ball

If the score were flipped I’d be more inclined to pinch hit there

      • Indy Red Man

No, you’re right I think. His offspeed stuff is really good tonite! Might see if he can go 6? The less our pen is exposed the better.

      • MBS

Gets 2 more K’s in the 5th, and a ground out. I’d say he’s still got something. I seem to remember him hitting over 100 pitches in starts in AAA. I’d let him go for another inning.

      • 2020ball

His offspeed stuff has looked good and he hides the ball well, certainly hasnt looked overmatched tonight.

  31. Roger Garrett

Up to India but that was really two bad at bats by Farmer and the pitcher.

  32. Dennis Westrick

Typical Reds rally! First 2 batters get on base and don’t advance a single base!

  33. Roger Garrett

I didn’t expect much even with 2 on and no out with the bottom of the order up.Farmer’s at bat was the key and when he didn’t move the runners it is going to come down to India.I may have bunted and pinch hit as well cause pen will have to cover 4 probably so whats one more after a day off yesterday. My one time to manage and I blew it.

    • MBS

Farmers bat is deadly, (to a rally). Bring up mr Lopez, and put Suarez back at SS.

  34. Roger Garrett

Braves are obviously hurt and must be short on the bench if Charlie Morton pinch hits so lets score some runs and put this game away. This is a gimme game if I ever saw it so lets take it.

    • Indy Red Man

They rolled in 2 lefties though versus our lefty lineup. Winker, Votto, Naquin, and Tucker all degraded some. Stephenson and AA on the bench. I’d atleast swap out TB for Stephenson if they leave the lefty in there.

  35. Roger Garrett

Three hits through 5 against the Braves pen is just not good.Reds should be rested and ready to go against a weary and short handed Braves team.Go Reds.Need this game.

  36. Bet on Red

Really impressed. I know its not the primary Braves lineup but this is a gutsy performance. Needs to take advantage of further starts to build that stamina, and getting more from fewer pitches. Def Big league ready, not sure about rotation ready.

  37. MBS

They are giving Antone some rope, hopefully he doesn’t hang himself with it. Huge AB

  38. Dennis Westrick

Perfect! A walk and a HBP with 2 outs! Time to make a change, unfortunately!

  39. JB

Nice job by Santillan. Never thought he would make it through 6 earlier in the game but he battled.

    • MBS

Same, I was guessing 5 if we’re lucky. It’s interesting how much rope Bell is giving the rookie starters. He seems to be more protective of his veteran starters.

  40. Dennis Westrick

Great job Big Guy! Watching the game on the MLB Network! The Braves announcer (Chip Carey I believe) said the Braves bullpen has been consistently inconsistent! That description describes the current gang occupying the Reds bullpen!

  41. Bet on Red

Dont look now but Suarez has walked twice.

  42. Dennis Westrick

If Bell goes to the bullpen for the 7th inning anybody but Do Little! Please!

  43. Indy Red Man

Why not Stephenson over TB vs these lefties? Does Bell have confidence with a 1 run lead with our bullpen? I don’t get it?

    • 2020ball

It downgrades the defense in a game youre winning, plus then we’d be forced to pinch hit guys like heineman in bigger spots.

  44. Indy Red Man

True, but whats a 1 run lead with our pen? Antone can get 3-4, but we need 9.

    • 2020ball

Youre not wrong, but with a lead and Garrett and Antone rested I dont think theres a need to panic.

  45. Bet on Red

AG for the 7th, Antone for 2 innings? Gotta love home game pizza watches.

    • Indy Red Man

1-3 with a hr. Just looked it up. I’m guessing TA for 6 outs

      • MBS

Didn’t they say Antone would be 1 inning only as he returns? I could be wrong, but I thought it was actually Antone saying that in a pregame interview.

      • MBS

I must be wrong, I can’t believe they’d use him in the 8th, without planning on using him in the 9th, given who we have in the pen.

    • Dennis Westrick

      Let’s hope it’s enough!

  46. Indy Red Man

Sadak said Nick would get his power back this homestand! We needed that!

  47. JB

Luke Jackson doesnt give up alot of runs but when he does it’s by the homer. Reminds me of Hembree.

  48. Dennis Westrick

Where would this team be without Nick C and Winker?

  49. Dennis Westrick

Suarez has left enough runners on base this season to populate a Third World country!

  50. Old-school

India Winker Castellanos is a productive 1-2-3

  51. Dennis Westrick

Buckle up gentlemen and hide the women & children! Top of the batting order up for the Braves in the 8th inning!

  52. Roger Garrett

I won’t second guess any moves tonight out of the pen but Garrett really looked good.

      • Doc

Only 8 pitches and looks sharp. I would have brought out in the 8th, and pulled him if somebody got on. Antone has regained his sharpness yet.

  53. JB

Tampa Bay getting no hitted in the 8th.

  54. Rex

Ozzie is on my fantasy team…I’m torn

  55. 2020ball

Winker flipping the ball to his barehand, very risky. Could easily give a guy 90 ft.

  56. Woodrow

Sigh. Tejay may be headed back to the IL with “strained spin rate”.

  57. Bet on Red

The breaking ball not moving like it used to… stuff is surprisingly hittable today. Is it the time off…or……

  58. Dennis Westrick

Well, there went the 3 run lead! Why not use AG to start the 8th inning? He only threw 8 pitches!

    • LDS

Agreed, especially since all the hitters were lefties. But Bell is Bell and usually TA is a good choice, though I thought early. Who covers the ninth?

      • beelicker

Theory would be TA vs strength of the order … shut that down

  59. Indy Red Man

TA hanging some breaking balls lately. Fb down and in to Albies….never the spot vs a lefty. Hopefully he’ll get it together? If he’s not dominant then we’re done.

  60. Brian Rutherford

Once again looking like a confident, winning team. I love to watch these guys. I think David Bell deserves a ton of credit for decisions like letting Santillan finish that inning and sticking with players that have struggled but seem to be putting it together.

It’s tough to read some of the negative stuff here when we have such a fun team to watch. Joey Votto has 2 hits tonight and an rbi but there are still some here that want to knock him down any chance they get.

Still in the thick of things and plenty of time to figure out the bullpen as nobody has run away with it yet. Why not the Reds?

  61. Tom Mitsoff

Antone’s breaking pitch is not as sharp as before his injury.

    • Woodrow

Or before the new substance rules.

    • Bet on Red

cant help to point out that the crackdown started while he was on the IL too.

  62. Dennis Westrick

Thanks Votto! Incredible how this team struggles to close out a game with a 3 run lead and 6 outs to go!

    • Indy Red Man

Seemed like he was too shallow for a rocket from a lefty bat?

  63. MBS

Stop the bleeding! He doesn’t have it tonight

  64. Old-school

    This is GABP- Coors East

5 runs is mandatory to win

  65. Roger Garrett

Just nevers works for us regardless of who comes in to the game.I have no answers or no clue as to what to do.

    • Indy Red Man

Thats why I’ve been defending Bell. He has nothing certain to rely on. Its like he’s playing blackjack where the percentages are always against him.

  66. JB

Can we get Antone out of there please. Its batting practice right now.

  67. Indy Red Man

5 straight have reached. I swear? I giveup with this pen

  68. Woodrow

Ian Kennedy, Yimi Garcia, … , … John Franco, Scott Williamson, Rawly Eastwick, anyone at this point …

    • Brian Rutherford

      Pedro Borbon, Rob Dibble?

      • Indy Red Man

Danny Graves, Doug Bair, and Tom “Boom Boom” Hume)))

      • Old-school

Doug bair was the pitching coach at a cincy high school a few years ago

        Give him a call

Log flume hume is looking better though

      • Indy Red Man

Forgot about Teddy Power. I liked him!

    • Brian Rutherford

+100 Tommy Hume. Would take the ball every day if you asked.

  69. JB

Wow wow wow. My heart cant take much more of this pen.

  70. 2020ball

good lord….. Antone battled. I’m not mad about him pitching the ninth regardless.

  71. Bet on Red

Thank goodness…. seems he got it together for the end, send him back out? if not who?

  72. Indy Red Man

Sammy LeCure….put down the mike and pick up the ball. You’re going to Louisville and you’ll be closing for us next week.

    • Brian Rutherford

I wonder what Coco Cordero is doing these days….

      • Indy Red Man

Guest star on My 600 Pound Life)))))))

  73. LDS

TA came through in the end but who pitches the ninth? Given all Atlanta’s LH, I’m betting Doolittle.

    • Tom Mitsoff

I’m going to say it will be Brach.

    • Dayton Ducks

4-3 lead going into the 9th! This one’s in the books! …right?

  74. beelicker

Osich and his cutter? Wow 27 pitches and back to the top of the order… not quite how you draw it up there lol

    • Tom Mitsoff

It might be Osich since Freeman up second in the inning.

      • Indy Red Man

Osich…..thats almost exactly what I say when the Reds starter leaves the game.

  75. Bet on Red

Lets hope Akyiama’s extended at bat allowed India to get some good looks

  76. Old-school

This is the game that is the microcosm of 2021. Bullpen banter hilarious from RLN.

  77. Indy Red Man

The Reds had to let Bauer walk. They cut Raisel to save $. They’re not going to be able to keep Nick and they probably won’t pickup up any decent relief help.

Bottom line….if they stay in the race then its a huge slap in the face to your fan base to watch Castellanos’s massive year go to waste without atleast trying Hunter Greene!
Personally I think the human arm only has so many 99-104+ mph heaters in it so why waste them in the minors.

    • 2020ball

I’m not against Greene, but Id have him starting in the bigs if he’s here. Unless its September.

    • bug

I concur. Bring both Greene and Lodolo up and put them in the pen, as their introduction to the big leagues. Send a couple of these broke arms down, or release them. The rookies this year have been great. All of them. It’s the veterans that have been up and down,..mostly down.

    • JB

I was getting a little nervous that the Reds didnt have a tootblan yet. Winker comes through though.

  78. Woodrow

Two outs. Running on contact. Right?

  79. Indy Red Man

We’ll take it, but the baserunning? Every night almost?

  80. 2020ball

ugh, why are you running yourself out of an inning?

  81. Tom Mitsoff

If I was David Bell, I would be very close to sitting Winker for a game to send a message about his horrible baserunning.

    • Woodrow

I’d suggest 45 minutes pregame with Delino DeShields the entire next week.

    • RedAlert

Agree – HE’S BRUTAL ON THE BASES !!!! Ridiculous and inexcusable that it keeps happening with him

      Boneheaded !

    • Roger Garrett

Set him and I don’t watch the games but I hear his name to often.Start setting guys if they continue to do the same things.Always had a problem with what appears to be a lack of holding players responsible.

    • 2020ball

He does numerous things that annoy me. Not sure how you approach it with, but he’s a really bad fundamental baseball player. He sure can swing it though.

      • 2020ball

“approach it him as a coach” I meant to say

      • 2020ball

or what ever I meant. Anyway its something the coaching staff should address as everyone has mentioned.

    • beelicker

LHP going tomorrow so he’ll likely sit in favor of Heineman and Aquino anyway

    • Melvin

Winker is a Billy Hamilton base running wannabe. It’s a fantasy. I admire his desire to be aggressive but he needs to stay put more often than not.

  82. Bet on Red

its obvioulsy Nicks fault for not clearing the wall lol. Hold on to your butts,

  83. Indy Red Man

I’ve always liked Brach. He was a great setup man for the O’s, but they just didn’t have the lead late very often

  84. RojoB

    Nice pitching by Santillan.

What a game from India and Castellanos!

    Suárez walks TWICE

    • Brian Rutherford

He really gets it. Proud that he plays for my favorite team. There are a bunch of guys that bring it 110% every game. What else can you ask for?

  85. magi210

Reds newest promotion should be free heart transplant with every bullpen pitcher. They’re wearing the fans out.
