Starting Pitchers
Tyler Mahle
This evening Tyler Mahle will take the mound for the first time coming off of a 12-strikeout performance against the Brewers. He’s made 14 starts this season and posted a 3.39 ERA in 74.1 innings with 23 walks and 90 strikeouts.
I feel like I type this every week, but teams are still trying to stack lefties against Tyler Mahle this season despite the fact that they are hitting just .192/.286/.300 against him (147 plate appearances) while righties are hitting .229/.279/.403 against him (157 plate appearances). There are some very big home and road splits for Mahle this season. On the road he’s made nine starts and held batters to a .177/.258/.274 line and has a 1.63 ERA with just two home runs allowed in 49.2 innings.

J.A. Happ
It’s been a tough season for J.A. Happ. Through 12 starts this season he’s posted a 6.12 ERA in 60.1 innings where he’s allowed 69 hits – 11 homers – while walking 18 batters and striking out just 44 of the hitters he’s faced this year. It’s been particularly over the last five weeks as he’s made seven starts and posted a 9.84 ERA in 32.0 innings while allowing 53 hits. Hitters have hit .371/.414/.692 against him in that stretch.
When it comes to the splits for Happ, things are a bit interesting. As a lefty, teams rarely play left-handed hitters against him. He’s made five starts this year where he didn’t face a single lefty. In 44 plate appearances this season against him lefties have hit .268/.318/.415. Righties have found plenty of success against him and they’ve hit .287/.342/.545 in 222 plate appearances against him this season. It’s not just the righty/lefty splits, though. There are some big home and road splits, too. At home hitters have just a .235/.299/.426 line against him where his ERA is 4.35. On the road he’s been crushed to the tune of a .983 OPS and a 7.98 ERA.

Winker and Castellanos still 2nd and 3rd in AS Voting
MLB released the update for All-Star game voting and Jesse Winker and Nick Castellanos are 2nd and 3rd among National League outfielders this week and both gained votes on Mookie Betts who was in 4th place last week and still remains there this week. No other Red looks like they have a chance of making it to “Phase 2” of the voting that will determine the starters for the game next month in Denver.
Bob Castellini is Rachel Phelps….
Or at least that’s what Mo Egger of The Athletic is suggesting in his latest piece.
What we do have in Cincinnati in real life is a similar dynamic to the one in the film. The Reds are a likable, possibly overachieving bunch that spent most of the spring playing just well enough to remain on the fringes of contention. They enter the heart of the summer having thrust themselves into the thick of the National League Central race, juxtaposed against an owner who spent the months leading up to the season undermining their chances.
It’s worth a read if you’ve got a subscription to The Athletic.

Here’s hoping that this lineup rakes tonight. My money is on the Punisher putting away a couple of long balls.
And free Hunter Greene.
Took a break from the RLN site yesterday while I spent the day with my 3 grandkids. Checked the final score when I got back and wasn’t surprised with the 4th straight loss to the Padres! Can’t blame yesterday’s loss on the bullpen or LC for that matter! The offense was pathetic at best! Gotta score more than 2 runs in most MLB games to win! Move On! Start a new winning streak tonight against the Twins! Go Reds!
Wait, Dennis. The Reds scored 5 yesterday. You confused me
Oh never mind. i’M really confused I lost a day there. Oops
I feel no different about this team today as I did 5 days ago after sweeping Milwaukee. Yes, the Pads beat us four straight despite looking ahead to the Dodgers and not serving up their best starting pitchers. But that bullpen is the best in the majors and our guys, once again, competed their tails off. I still feel a healthy Reds team is a nasty Reds team.
I don’t think the Pads will make any noise in the playoffs. They are talented, but something is missing there. And I think it’s leadership. I would welcome a shot at them when healthy in the playoffs.
On to the Twins.
The Padres are all glitz and no guts.
The big “SD” bling gangsta medal they pass around us all I needed to see to tell me that
Just imitating the University of Miami college football nonsense! Grow and act like MLB ball players!
What exactly should an MLB ballplayer act like Dennis? Are they not allowed to have fun in the same way in which you would have fun? You do realize that they are about 40 years younger than you and probably have a different idea of what is fun right?
I would not wear that thing around in public. I’m also in my 50s and not my 20s. But they are having fun with it and it is hurting absolutely no one. Let them enjoy it.
@ Frankie…+1000
I’m curious what period of baseball these old timers are actually pining for.
Heineman instead of Akiyama. Akiyama has better splits regardless of the handiness of the pitcher. Shogo, at least, has some upside. Heineman has never hit. He has a better fielding percentage. Maybe Heineman has a better arm. Oh well, I give up trying to discern the logic behind Bell’s decision process.
I was about to say the same—who really thinks Heineman is a better hitter against lefties than Shogo?
Bell couldn’t spell analytics if you spotted him the a-n-a-l-y-t-i-c
Not sure what David Bell has to do to get a break from you Dennis. With all of the injuries and AAA (at best) bullpen he has the team fighting hard and in the thick of the division race. What should he have accomplished with the tools he has?
It has to be tough playing on the West Coast with the time difference and, of course, the Pads had a full capacity stadium for our series with them. However, we need TJ and Mikey ASAP. The Series could have been much different with them. We could also use Sonny and move one or two of the current starters to the BP. Brach is encouraging as well.
If nothing else, how cool is it that we have two rookies in the lineup, batting leadoff and cleanup? Its one of the reasons I watch.
That’s a good sign for the future for sure! I was clamoring for Stephenson / Barnhart to move up to the middle of the order, but i didn’t think India could handle the leadoff. I can admit when I’m wrong. India not only can handle it, but he seems to have thrived in the leadoff spot.
India has a really high baseball IQ. Mature beyond his years.
It is very cool. The rookies are making the year both watchable and fun, even if the reds fall 10 games out of first.
Paul daugherty has an article just up quoting Bob Castellini:
“ If we have an opportunity to improve the bullpen, we will.”
Earth to Bob C., The opportunity (and need) is NOW!
Nick krall per Daugherty
“We’ve talked to every club and opened those conversations. Bob mentioned if we need something… he’s open to it”
So Krall now has the authority to make a deal
See what happens
Open to it just mean’s he’s willing to listen to the details. I’ll believe it if they actually acquire someone and Bob has to write a weekly check to that player for more than $30,000.
I get it. I see better than I hear.
At least Krall has a job to do and decisions to make.
Earth to Bob … haha
Bob also said they were going to get a SS. I’ll believe it when I see it.
I agree with JB. Castellini is good at making statements but results have been lacking, going all the way back to his purchase. DG is right. Listening but no action.
This is the stopper game right here. Reds got their best starter up, we get to play an extra outfielder, do not have to bat the pitcher. Looking for the Reds to go off tonight. Dont see the over at 10 though. I think this will be a one-sided affair. For those of you that are worried about Heineman starting, don’t worry as soon as we get the lefty out, Akiyama will take that spot and become the second lead-off guy.
This is about to turn into the feels game…. I am nearly crying here.
Almost forgot about switching to the WLW feed. Had to do it before any of the rambling comments started by Sadak.
India hits hit 55 mph….base hit
Winker hit it 110 mph….out
Umps are checking the pitchers for foreign substances.
Anyone coming out to check the umps eyesight.
If a pitcher reached into his back pocket and pulled out an eyechart…that would be EPIC!
You are assuming accountability goes both ways … we’ve repeatedly seen evidence that MLB umpires are accountable to nobody where the strike zone is concerned.
I saw Buxton several times in AA. Unbelievable athlete. Had a terrible head to head collusion in CF, and that was before concussion protocol.
Sano is also a monster. Saw him hit one over the light tower. Pretty sure it left the earth’s atmosphere.
Collision
Chasing Happ tonight could get a little easier if he keeps up this pitch count. Glad Geno took the BB.
OK, Scott. Let’s see some of this “damage” they just said you can do.
Of course we all know Shogo couldn’t have done any better, right?
Not to mention Naquin just had a hit, walk, 2 runs, & rbi vs a lefty the other day.
Heineman starting is laughable. But the Reds often are. Sadly. At least they aren’t Pittsburgh bad.
Heineman couldn’t hit his way out of a sopping wet paper bag – pitiful !!!!
Cannot leave that ball right there to that man
NUTS!!
This is looking troublesome.
People at RLN complain when a guy turns 32-33 years old…While Cruz continues to bash at 40,
Age is just a number.
Age is just one factor in it all. Some seem to “cheat” it more than others. Playing in the AL with DH in nearly every game helps.
Great use of the extra batter with the DH today. We got Heineman in with his .083 BA, that’s .040 pts better than Mahle.
Radio boot noting that Mahle is having “issues” today. I’d say that’s accurate at the moment. 27 pitches, nobody out in the 2nd, 2 runs already in.
And now he’ll start with the nibbling?
Mahle is due a stinker and unless he writes the ship this is it.A bomb,a walk and an 0-2 single and we are down 2 and still nobody out.We get two on and no out and dont’ move. Its just who this team is on the road.
This is about to get real ugly real quick! Two (2) walks, no outs and bases loaded! Come on TM!
Lolllllllllllllllll. That was funny
They take alot of bad swings in Korean baseball, but that one takes the cake
Need a double play bad to right the ship and give us a chance.
Why would you risk throwing across the field, off balance, on Buxton?
And why did AA catch what was going to be a foul ball?
Quickly heading toward 50 pitches and a pretty big hole to climb out of.
Thought the same thing at first on the AA catch. I think you have to catch it though. Arraez doesn’t strike out much and has speed so DP s are rare.
Geno never getting Buxton…catch the ball…tag 3rd…out. Low baseball IQ play
Its just what we do.Can’t get out of our own way.We give away so many outs on defense on things such as this.Reds are just reeling right now and need a big hit or play or a fight to turn this a round.
Exact same thought. Not showing awareness of his surroundings.
Geno came charging in and caught that ball on the grass. He would of had to take even a few more steps to stop and turn around and go back to third. He wasnt getting that guy.
wait for it to get to you…it wasn’t hit that slow.
This 2021 Reds Team is one of the lowest baseball IQ teams of all time! With TM at 53 pitches after only 2 innings means a short night for him and an early exit night for me!
That was a horrendous inning in more ways than one — but it could have been A LOT worse.
Cy Happ starts the 3rd.Can we get anybody on base? Can we move them around?
Feels like a serious mental lapse on Mahle’s part. Like the HR rattled him? Hopefully he settles down going forward.
Looking like time to switch to something else on the big screen. Enthusiasm and hope waning quickly here.
Yep.Cy Happ and his almost 6 ERA is way too much for this offense tonight.
Two truisms that define 2021 Reds
1.) bullpen is awful
2.) offense cant score outside of GABP. 17 runs in last 7 games on this road trip
Bell better hope someone hits a 3 run home run. Legitimate to say he’s limited with bullpen options. Its not legitimate to say he’s forced to start this lineup with a DH.
Suarez Farmer and Heineman better rescue their manager.
This team looks really uninterested and ready to go home. Sad to think we were thinking they could, and should, sweep this 2 game series. Will be lucky to gain a split tomorrow, very sad and frustrating.
I find it hard to believe Thursday’s loss is still lingering cause these guys are pros and they do play 162 games a year.I could be wrong of course but they do need to right the ship and it has to be the offense that does it.Its really hard to do that with 3 guys that have just awful numbers are starting.
Geno says ok
AA says me too
Reds need this game. This pitcher is not Cy Young and is already moving up the pitch count. Mahle needs to buckle down and get the next three.
Leadoff walk to start the 3rd! Mahle doesn’t have it tonight! Time for Do Little!
he has enough, I had Mahle getting 5, 6, and 8 strikeouts. So he found something there. This inning looks alot better. And I would not worry about Cruz on the basepaths.
Yep Yep and Yep but the rescue rangers are just awful at the plate and the numbers support it so wouldn’t bet on it.Of course unless Senzel or Moose show up or we bring up a short stop or trade for one who do we have better? We play on I guess.
And, on the flip side why do we continually make an opposing pitcher with an ERA near 6 look like Cy Young?
As wild as Mahle has been we are only 3 down. Unfortunately the offense looks bored.
Mahle is going to compete
Hes not going to be perfect but the guy is first reds pitcher since 2014/Cueto to win 5 straight starts
Sometimes you got to win 7-6
Correct.Mahle as I said earlier was due a stinker but he has matured so much this year and its between the ears.He comes to compete and he does compete. Now he may give up a bunch more but without him we would be really much much worse. His break out along with what Miley has done gives me a good feeling.Gray returning and Castillo getting better makes us very good but it all comes down to the pen and will we hit beyond Casty and Wink with any consistency.Reds only chance right now is to get ahead early extend the starter and pray the pen can get 9 outs.
Send down Heineman and Freeman. Recall Lopez and Payton. Bench Suarez. Start Lopez and India and see if the rookies can wake this team up.
Reds dont need another left handed outfielder. Akiyama already cant find playing time. Friedl also is a lefty. Apparently Reds cant get enough left handed outfielders. Heineman is here only because he is right handed. Pathetic.
Good point. Just send Heineman down and call up Lopez. Heineman can’t hit anyone so play Aquino, Shogo,
Casty and Wink have carried us all year and if they don’t produce we have little chance especially on the road.
This is the 3rd guy on second in less than 4 innings. Need to get him home.
That’s even better, Suarez.
Suarez not asleep today
I just tuned in, and was thinking that while Happ painted the edges with Votto, he was pitching in the heart of the zone with Suarez. Then boom.
Hopefully that will wake the boys up.
Geno connects and gets the Reds back in it.
Geno and the Punisher! Bout time.
That escalted quickly. Nice to see what the HR ball can do.
Get Aquino more playing time
Verdad, Punisher is the man! Really wish he could play more
Punisher ties it.
Punisher connects….tie game
Nice!
AA, 4 hrs in 24 ABs. Play him more often and see if that average improves. I still think they’ll need him next year when Castellanos opts out.
Winker arrived this year, Aquino’s day is coming.
I have always been a big fan.I am about him just as I am about all the other young guys.Just give him 450 at bats and lets see.My guess is he takes over in right next year with Casty gone.Of course we will have to wait and see.
Speaking of getting pieces from other teams, the D-backs are reportedly starting to get ready to ship pieces. Is there anyone from their Bullpen that we could use?
Why on earth is india swinging at the first pitch against a pitcher who’s clearly struggling?
First pitch swinging after a walk to Farmer after back to back homers. How can that make any sense at all?Good grief he ought to have had the take sign flashed on the score board.Doesn’t anybody think any more about what has just happened?
Again, no plate discipline! He’s a rookie, but needs to recognize what’s happening in the current inning
This game could be a redo of Thursday night except the Reds on the winning side.
Not to be out done India does the same thing as Heineman. Two pitches and two outs. How on earth can that happen on a big league team.Happ was shell shocked after the back to back and then a 5 pitch walk.Does anybody even address these kind of things.Even a little league coach flashes the take sign after Farmer walked.
Exactly!
Unless the 5th is literally a three-pitch inning I don’t see Mahle going more than 5. He found it late, but too late. Going to have to hope on the Bullpen today
OK, at least we tied it up. It’s still getting late for me and this will go on for some time. I’ll have to check it in the morning.
Mahle now still has a chance to be first reds pitcher since Steve Parris in 2000 to win 6 consecutive starts- that from Lance McCalister earlier
Go mahle
Go reds
Need to win this game! Mahle is near 100 pitches and is probably done for the evening! Mr. Bell, please no one pitcher per inning tonight! Pick one, and if he’s on, ride that horse as long as he’s standing! If he’s not, don’t wait until the game gets out of hand!
So, the Brewers go from playing the last place Marlins to the last place D’backs! That’s why the Reds 1-5 record against the D’backs early in the season hurts!
1-5 against anyone hurts
Agreed!
I agree but you always lose some you shouldn’t and win some you shouldn’t but its the winning teams that always beat up on a lesser team.We may get there one of these days But we are not a winning team untill we prove it over a course of a 162 games season. How long has that been?I can’t even remember.
If the Reds can stay close , the Brewers have a brutal September. The Reds will play Pirates 9 out of the final 18.
not only the pirates but the Pirates minus whatever pieces they get rid of by the deadline.
nice 2H day for Joey as well, knocking out happ in the process
It is now a bullpen game! Who’s gonna step up for our guys?
Happ gives up 5 hits and walks 5 and we don’t score unless 2 of the hits leave the park.If we can ever get better at scoring without having to go yard we could have a lethal offense.
.273/.387/.447/.835
Tyler Stephenson 191 MLB PA
Give him about 300 more and lets see how it goes.Guy really knows the strike zone and his power will show up at some point.
Too much to ask for Suarez to drive in runs two at bats in a row!
Baby steps. I’ll take the walk and homer tonight.
You’re right! Being a bit selfish there!
Anything we can get is good cause he is playing every day as is Farmer so we roll with it.Nothing can change unless we call up a short stop which isn’t going to happen or Moose or Senzel return and even if they do I see no way Suarez sets.
Not sure who our pitcher is thats coming in but welcome to the party and first man up is Cruz.Rolling the dice early.Lets see what happens. Please throw strikes at least.
So someone explain Bell. He of the L/R obsession brings in a mediocre lefty to face a righty who has already hit one out?
Was wondering the same thing! Hope it works out!
So you hear that? The Nothing, the low mummer of the crowd. Generally disinterested like they have seen the story of their team give up the lead before losing the game? So different then San Diego
3 outs with No walks by Mr. Osich! Probably means he won’t pitch the next inning!
Our guy was anyhwere from 71 to 93 on his pitches per ESPN.Most were in the mid to low 80’s with only 1 at 93.Not sure if that is correct but it worked. How about we score just a bunch this inning.Anybody know the status on Antone?
Doolittle,Garrett, Perez, Z. Duke, Cingrani ,Finnegan, C.Reed, W.Peralta, J. Lamb ….. This team is dying for a lefty out of the pen. The last great one was Chapman. Maybe he put a curse on this team when he was traded.
Why is scott Heinemann hitting in the 6 th inning against a righty?
A very good question would have gone to Shogo there.
You beat me to it.
Akiyama played yesterday. He has to sit for 14 days now. Naquin is probably scheduled off and is not permitted to play.
Why in the world did Hienaman bat there?
I want to say its because we have no need to double switch but taking a shot at Bell makes no sense any more.Bell is not our biggest problem on most nights.I am looking forward to when Sonny,Antone,Moose,Senzel, and Mikey show up all healthy. No more excuses then for playing guys or pitching guys that aren’t performing.Bring up a short stop and a couple of guys from the minors to help the pen in August and we will be as good as we have been in years. He gets a pass until then but not after that.
Heineman against a right-handed pitcher is painful to watch! And the strikeout was expected.
Its painful to watch against a left hander.
Thought they had pills for that!
Five hits through 6 turns at the plate.Just not good with the 1 inning per reliever merry go round in swing for our side.Double switch not in play tonight so we may see somebody go an extra inning. Why not now in the 6th?Give that left another one why don’t we.Nation we just have to have some fun regarding our pen. They may hold these guys the rest of the game and give our team a boost. They need it and so does the team.Go Reds.
Not bad for a junk-throwing lefty. Seems to have things in control here, the question becomes does he have stamana
Wow 2 innings of shutout ball from Osich. You sir are officially the closer.
Now that is funny JB.
Good grief we just had the new guy in the pen go 2 inning to get us to the 7th tied.Offense please wake up and score some runs.
It’s been reported the Reds took a $80m loss last year. Since Bob C and the current ownership group bought the club, they’ve run the team to break even. But when there is a financial loss, the shareholders have to cover that loss. For Bob C, who owned over the half the club, that means kicking in $40m+.
That’s a real problem when your net worth is around $250m and a whole bunch of your wealth is tied up in a baseball team.
Many folks don’t realize that Bob C is the least wealthy owner in baseball.
Maybe it’s time to appreciate we have an owner willing to keep the team in Cincinnati. And until Mo Egger kicks in $40m, he can stuff it.
Gee, only $250 million? Poor guy, he’s merely a pauper. If he can’t afford to compete, sell the team. It has appreciated nicely since his purchase and he’d turn a nice profit.
Hear hear!
Not to be a contrarian, but the Castellini Group bought the Reds in 2006 for $270 million. The team is now valued at 1.075 billion according to Forbes. That is a pretty decent ROI. I don’t think money is the problem.
Is Cincinnati chocked full of billionaires who would buy the team and keep it in town? Be careful what you wish for.
Also, be careful envy doesn’t cloud your judgment.
Castellini doesn’t own anywhere near 50% of the team. He owns more than any other individual owner, but he owns 15% of the team. There are 19 people and or groups in the current ownership. That is a part of the big problem. Cincinnati ownerships are like Cincinnati. Small time. They couldn’t get anyone with enough money to actually buy the cheapest team in baseball and needed to crowdfund the purchase.
And until the Reds open up their books and show us the actual numbers I will not buy the whole we break even every year thing. And what does that mean? How much does Bob pay himself to be the CEO of the team each year? A couple million? On top of his investment quadrupling since his ownership group bought the team?
I’m sure that Bob appreciates you defending him on Redleg Nation though.
@Tom, Where did you get your #’s? Everything I see is Bobby is worth 400 million, and I wasn’t aware the Reds opened their books for public viewing. I believe that they could have lost $80M, but I think it’s $80M less than would have if they had a full season. If bob won’t spend, sell the team to someone who will.
The Reds didn’t open their books – the loss was what was reported. Mo discussed it with Ken Broo yesterday on WLW.
Who’s the billionaire who Bob C can sell to that will be loyal to Cincinnati and keep the team in town? More than likely, the buyer will be someone with no ties to the team or city and wants to make profits.
That just can not happen. This team makes way to many dumb mistakes.
Osich is a beast! Came out for a 3rd inning.
Not bad from Osich, 2.1 no runs controlled pitching… now you know that performance has earned him a trip back to Louisville when Antone comes back tomorrow
So Brach takes over and, wait for it, walks the first batter he faces!
Time for a crooked number! And past my bed time! Work keeps getting in the way of following the late games! Hope the good guys win! Out!
I was hoping that this game would be a quick one tonight.
Let’s hope the Reds can get a run here and put this one away because the old tomato is feeling a bit old right now and is fighting Mr Sandman right now and losing the fight.
7 hits, 2 are hrs, and 5 walks and only 3 runs. They’re going to blow another one
You don’t take the Punisher out, the Punisher takes you out! lol
And there’s an example of why I consider Bell a lousy manager. Give AA the opportunity against the righty and use Naquin for Heineman. It’s not like AA has never hit a HR against a righty or hit multiple HRs in a game.
Running out of time. Understand the move to Naquin but I would have let Aquino hit. He needs to see RHP. Here is Warren.
What a little league display of defense or non defense as it was. If Kirilloff scores this inning because of that it will fit in perfect with this defense.
Warren is not checking the runner at 2nd at all…he might steal 3rd
Warren nibbling there? Our guys pitch like every hitter has a .940 ops?
The Move to Garret, a person the Twins have not seen, needs 2 outs off of lefties. (assuming that they give Donaldson the IBB)
Inherited runners time…..sorry about that Warren.
I’ll take my crow with salt…nice job AG
AG breaking out the slider plus Stephenson = 4-3 and man on 3rd
I blame Warren if they score because you know AG isn’t very good. Warren had that one scrub down 1-2 and started nibbling. Otherwise they don’t score
The hit was an infield pop….61 mph
A infielder should have called time out…not warren
Right, that was on India to call time
Houston no hitting Baltimore in the 8th
AG does the job!!
Shogo is going to hit a double. I’m feeling it
No fair…..didn’t know they were going lefty. I would’ve just called for a single))
lol close enough!
Way off, only a single. Good job Shogo
How about that Bell, Shogo hit against a lefty. Heineman?
That’s why Bell held him back before, to draw out their closer before extras just like it played out
Shogo with a hit off a tough lefty. Naquin with a single, walk, rbi, and 2 runs off a lefty the other day. So glad Bell keeps playing Heineman vs lhp??
O m g. You have to slide earlier
India has 3 hits but has 3 tootblans
Dang it India…overslide
Wow .. India hustling too hard costs an out … unbelievable
David Ross immediately pulled Javy Baez tonite after he forgot how many outs there were and got doubled off.
Bell should’ve tried that about 1,320 baserunning mistakes ago
Three out to get into the strength position of EI baseball, don’t know the stats outright but I know we are winning more than we are losing extra-inning games. Gotta be Sims here
Sims isn’t very good. This happens every time almost. He hangs breaking balls and can’t spot the heater.
Another gut punch coming?
THe rate this is going another heart attack is comming lol
Tip the cap Simsy!!
Not a textbook ninth, but 0 runs is 0 runs.
Wow, Sims sure knows how to make it interesting. Cubs have lost. Milwaukee likely will. Win here Reds. It’s an opportunity.
Sims comes through. Got to get the lead now, running out of arms in the Bullpen, and I don’t think he will be good for more than another inning.
Yeah he already went 20. I don’t think Sims will be back. We need 2-3 runs really then we don’t have to sweat the guy at 2nd
Now for some runs and then get them out, Cubs lost and Brewers losing in the 8th.
Twins have left 15 men on base….wow
Dolittle warming…we need at least 5
Buxton out of the game atleast. I’d feel good enough with 2, but it might go to the 11th in that instance.
Man Stephenson and India. They just keep getting on.
That will do Geno!
Suarez 2-3 3RBIs Despite his troubles this year, he is the MVP today
Geno with a good night at the plate. big insurance sac fly
You know this 10th inning isn’t going to be easy with Doolittle.
Another back breaking loss. this is too much
Doolittle has nothing. Who can’t see that? 91-92 straight as an arrow. No breaking balls. No deception
How did this scrub make it this long with no change-up no nothing?
The guy is not a pitcher. He’s a thrower and I wouldn’t want him saying one syllable to my young pitchers.
Lord help us.
Doolittle finding extra speed today, does he even have a second pitch?
Loss coming – pathetic
Just walk the bases loaded so you can get Doolittle out of the game. Take your chances with Hendrix.
Nice job Do Do Little
DFA Doo and fire Bell too. This is ridiculous.
Bell is just completely lost – has been for some time now . Clueless , clueless , clueless
Send down the BP guys without mlb level talent and bring up the guys that might. Might as well let them get their pitch counts in a red jersey.
I guess it was too much to ask Sims to pitch 2 innings since he hasn’t pitched in over 4 days. Let’s just lose instead. Absolutely unreal.
Bell wanted to save him for 4 days from now. Worst manager in MLB.
By far and not even close !
Especially since Sims has started games in the past and certainly threw more than 1-2 innings.
Still tied, a total non-speedster on 1st. A ground ball gets us to the 11th. Their Bullpen has fired all the good bullets I think. Got to think we can repeat with Naquin on 2nd.
Brewers and Cubs loss tonight but this doesn’t help! He only has 1 pitch a 92- 93 mph fastball. Lets see what Ryan has!
Lucas Sims can’t go 3 innings? You should know Doolittle is going to give up runs, no one else can pitch at all? Are we sure…..or is this an obsession with Bell on bringing in Doolittle, no matter what the situation is?
Sims goes 100% effort so 20 pitches is alot.
Not having Antone cost us atleast 2 games & maybe 3. Its too bad because our division sucks.
Thank god we pinch ran for Winker. Wouldn’t want him for the rest of the game anyway.
And this is why some complain about game and player management. Yet some don’t see what we see!
Was it Freeman who got picked off pinch running for Votto like.. last week. I know somebody did.
Yes, it was him
Hendrix gets to the 11th. No loss yet doomsayers. Time to see what the bad end of the Twins Bullpen looks like. This is a put up game for the Reds to prove that they belong there
Hendrix only 7 pitches and Shoemaker is horrible. If we can get 2 more then we’re good I think
Lets get it. Go Reds!
Reds bullpen is basically empty. They need to finish it this inning.
Bring in Miley if it keeps going. Isn’t he the starter later today?
Actually, you could bring in Tony S. He had a reduced pitch count during his game and today should be his bullpen tune up day today…
There’s no way Miley is still at the park.
yea, he should have been sent back to the Hotel a couple of innings ago
Hendrix in and does the job…I would have brought him in for the 10th to pitch, YOU KNOW Doolittle is going to give up runs….with Hendrix, you have a chance…even with a 50/50 chance is better than bringing in Doolittle, who is about 100% of giving up a run or runs.
Wow, we can’t even get productive outs. Move the baserunner along.
Maybe the Twins can’t get productive outs either, always hope.
Wait wait wait. You’re telling me Hembree was available.
Yes. but he struck out 3 guys the last time.
Doolittle gets paid more. Therefore, he’s the guy you want pitching in that situation.
Gotta think there is going to be some phone calls to Louisville tonight on who is available to come up. They are off tonight so everyone has at least one day of rest. Antone coming back to will be clutch
yea I meant last night…. Monday evening
Just a joke.Night after night we must prove we have nobody in the pen that can get anybody out.The one guy that even stands a chance to close a game out sets for 4 days and only throw 20 pitches tonight.
Hendrix was money tonite! Got 5 outs like a boss
12 it is… Reds still fighting. India on second and Jesse Wink…. oh never mind
Too funny but on point!
Alright Alright Alright! Lets get the Win!
Can I boo this walk to nick? boo
you know what the Reds have not had this year…. A grand Slam
you know what the Reds still have not had this year?
A competent manager …
Hey we were over .500 once. We can say that.
I give up. When .500 is the holy grail of objectives that strive for then your team isn’t very good.
And that’s a wrap. Imagine if Bell had let Sims go another 10-12 pitches
I would hazard a guess that *nobody* who follows this team would have used the bullpen the way Bell used it tonight. He’s basically living in a different universe than the rest of us.
I am done commenting on this organization. It wasn’t enough on Thurs so we have to go and do it again.Insane of me to expect anything different. We must be trying to lose and we have found that winning formula. After 50 years I am done with this mess.Unless ownership does something starting at the manager then there is no sense expecting anything but what we see night after night.Did not even try to win the game, just played along removed pitcher after pitcher and hitter after hitter with this match up silliness.Won’t use Sims to close with the lead one time and then brings him in to keep it tied then won’t let him close after he goes up.Done
Got exactly what they deserved – never winning anything with this inferior manager
This loss is on Bell, no reason not to leave Sims in. It is almost getting to the point where you just don’t care as long as Bell is the manager. He is the worst manger i have ever seen, he has no feel for the game. I am sure he is a nice man but, this teams need a manager not a friend.
I’m sure he wanted Do-nothing-Little to pitch cause left-handed hitters are due up & our manager knows everything & he’s smarter than anyone in the game
As always, Bell must have some weird explanation in his head as to why he couldn’t do the most obvious thing that would have given this team the best chance to win. He seems to be more interested in making moves than simply allowing his best available players to win as many games as possible.
Why will no one in the postgame or pregame or anytime ask Bell a tough question……like “how does he expect Doolittle to get big league batters out with what he has? “ Just lob softballs at Bell all the time …..it’s embarrassing
I’m convinced the media are part of the problem with this team. They lower everyone’s expectations by never pointing out how dumb these decisions are. Everything is just “tough luck” and “too bad it didn’t work out as he hoped.” The less well informed fans have no reason to think the manager is doing anything wrong, or that perhaps the team has enough talent to actually win.
Seriously?
I can’t remember the last time I saw any sort of “man, David Bell made a good move here” reaction, even when his moves work out, from the fans. I’d imagine he’s got an approval rating of like 5-10% among the fans.
The misuse of the bullpen was only one problem tonight. He also removed one of his two all-star hitters in a tie game for a little extra speed. Off the top of my head I can’t think of a case this season where the use of a pinch runner has actually helped score a run, but I can think of various instances when it’s backfired. It’s too bad Bell doesn’t have access to this information.
That’s why I miss Marty B……at least he would tell it like it is….fortunately the cowboy has some of that in him
