The Cincinnati Reds and San Diego Padres face off again tonight at 7:15pm ET in game three of their 4-game set in beautiful San Diego. Reminder that this game is on Fox and not on Bally Sports Ohio.

Eugenio Suárez – 3B Jurickson Profar – CF

Starting Pitchers

Vladimir Gutierrez

It’s been a quality beginning to the start of the career for Vladimir Gutierrez. The 25-year-old has gone 3-1 in his first four starts while posting a 2.74 ERA. He’s allowed just 15 hits, two home runs, walked 10, and he’s struck out 19 batters along the way.

We’re still dealing with a very small sample size in the big leagues, but Gutierrez has some weird splits so far. Lefties have hit just .150/.292/.250 against him this year, but he’s walked as many of them as he’s struck out – 8 – in 48 plate appearances. Righties are hitting .220/.261/.317 against him in 47 plate appearances, but with just two walks and 11 strikeouts.

Miguel Diaz

The Padres didn’t name Diaz their starter until following the game last night. The 26-year-old righty has made 10 relief appearances this year to go with one start. He’s only thrown 20.2 innings on the season, but has a 2.18 ERA with 12 hits allowed, 10 walks, and 23 strikeouts. He did not pitch in the big leagues in 2020. His lone start came on May 3rd. He hasn’t pitched more than two innings in a game since May 24th, with his last three outings all lasting just one inning.

We’ve got a small sample size here for Diaz just like we do with Gutierrez. This season righties are hitting just .154/.195/.385 against him, but half of their hits – 3 – have gone over the fence. They’ve walked just twice and have 16 strikeouts against him in 42 trips to the plate. Lefties are hitting just .182, but have a .341 on-base percentage and a .333 slugging percentage against him with more walks than strikeouts in 41 plate appearances against him.

Hope the Reds hit and make this a bullpen game Padres as that should help out tomorrow.

  2. Dennis Westrick

The results of Bell’s decisions regarding relief pitching selection in the 9th inning of Thursday nights game are looming large after yesterday’s loss to the Padres. Needed to close out that win after the dramatic comeback! In hindsight Sims might have been a better choice! And, yes, I know Sims pitched the previous day (22 pitches)! Reds are in the unenviable position of needing a win today with Vlad on the hill and LC tomorrow for a series split and a winning road trip! Just win baby! Go Reds!

    • Mark A Verticchio

I could not agree with you more, spot on opinion.

    • ClevelandRedsFan

Sims wasn’t available. Guys can’t pitch every game or they can risk injury. Bell made the right move by not using Sims.

Where would this team be in 3 weeks if Sims goes on the IL?

      • MBS

Right, it’s not the playoffs, moves like that make sense then, but not 60+ games into the season.

  3. Klugo

This will be a different kinda challenge for Gutierrez. Looking forward to see how he competes.

  4. Bet on Red

If the Padres are running out a bullpen game arm for this game they are conceding this game already. The Reds will need to Jump on them fast and keep knocking pitchers around until SD finally sends their junk pitchers out. There is no reason that the Reds lose today. Vlad has impressed so far, but here is a real test for him. I would like to see a good solid 6+ outing, with now the right portions of the bullpen rested, and indeed it seems a new Left-hander to throw into the fire.

    • Dennis Westrick

Agree! Need a solid outing from Vlad today! 5 innings would be nice and 6+ would be even better

      • MBS

6 would be nice and 7+ would be even better. Anything short of 6, after last game will really tax our bullpen. It will be interesting to see if he steps up, my guess is he does.

  5. Dennis Westrick

Plate discipline (patience) may be the best approach by Reds batters tonight as the Padre’s SP has a high walks per inning! Diaz has 10 walks in 20.2 innings according to Doug!

  6. ClevelandRedsFan

Anyone else getting White Sox and Astros on Fox? Any other way to watch this game?

  7. Mark Moore

It’s why we love that India kid. Got on and enough wheels to get in on that double by Da Wink.

  8. Tom Mitsoff

Votto is going to get tossed, and that’s idiotic.

    • Tom Mitsoff

When you’re contending, if you’re a key, starting player, you can’t let yourself get crazy over something as silly as that.

      • JB

He wants to be more emotional but that’s going to far. Reds need him right now.

      • Tom Mitsoff

So now you have Freeman at first and batting cleanup.

  9. Mark Moore

I’d generally side with Joey, but he needed to get off the field. Now we finish without him even though we’ve barely started. I’m fine with Freddie taking over for Tinker, but Joey was coming back strong and losing him is tough, especially if the Sunday lineup already doesn’t have him in it. Wonder how many games this will cost him (us).

    • Tom Mitsoff

There was absolutely no need to lose control like that. Unhappy with the call, sure, but not losing your mind.

      • JB

Hope he didnt bump the ump. That could cost him.

      • Mark Moore

No contact that I saw JB. I was afraid it was going to happen several times.

  10. Dennis Westrick

Cubs got shellacked by the Marlins 11-1. Chance to gain a game on them at least!

  11. Klugo

That ump is a coward. He says something to Votto and then won’t even look at him. Hate to lose Votto, but that umpire deserved a lambasting and should’ve been ejected himself. Manager, player and fan tossed all because ump said something to Votto he has no business saying. These umps are jerk-offs.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Doesn’t matter. Reds as a whole team and Votto as an individual has to be smarter than that.

      • Redsfan4life

While as a fan I completely agree with this comment, the fact remains that umpires need to be held accountable also. If the umpire is being less than impartial or is on the field insulting players than attention has to be called to it or nothing changes.

Case in point, remember a couple years ago when the pirates were playing beanball? Garrett took on the whole bench, and the long term result was the pirates beaning people was mitigated and Hurdle was let go.

Sometimes the immediate damage is worth the long term positive result. I can only imagine that Votto, as intellectual as he is, knows this.

    • Redsfan4life

What did the ump say? Any idea?

      • Tom Mitsoff

Again, doesn’t matter. If you’re in the playoffs and you lose your mind and get tossed because the ump said something nasty, that says you’re thinking more about yourself than the team.

    • RojoB

I have nothing against umpires, just bad umpires

  12. MBS

Votto needs to chill, now we got Freeman in the 4 hole.

  13. Red Thunder

Joey’s beef was with the third base umpire, I don’t know what the home plate umpire had to do with it but he said something because you could see Joey say huh? Then it started.

  14. Old-school

I dont care if Joey Votto and David Bell get tossed for caring about a call they perceived as bad

I want that player and manager on my team in june

    In october… dont do that

  15. Tom Mitsoff

Only Jackie Bradley Jr. has a worse average than Suarez. Oy!

    • Old-school

Its seriously time to start plan B @ 3b going forward and thats Nick Senzel

      Forget the injury past.
Focus on the age and future

Nick Senzel is the Reds 3b moving forward

      • Tom Mitsoff

Ultimately it will be Moustakas whenever he returns from injury. Moustakas is not going back to second as long as India is healthy.

      • LDS

I think everyone is making the assumption that anyone can dislodge Suarez from the starting lineup. I’m not expecting that regardless of whether it’s Moustakas or Senzel. I’ll bet they sit India before Suarez.

      • Old-school

Moose was just placed on the 60 day DL- hes out till late august .
        Senzel goes to 3b
Suarez to SS at the All stAr break unless a trade is made

      • MBS

Ok, lets forget the injury past, but how do we forget the injury present? Senzel is no one to count on. I hope for the best, but expect the worse with Senzel’s health. I would like to see Lopez come up and get some AB’s. Moose hurt, Senzel hurt, and Suarez just not cutting it.

  16. Mark Moore

India needs a chin strap … just saying. Really love the kid as ROY.

    • Indy Red Man

He might win Triple Crown so yeah)))

  17. JB

Suarez wear contacts? We might of just figured out his problem. He has the wrong prescription.

  18. Mark Moore

Cutting it a little close there, boys … listen to each other.

    • Earmbrister

India looks like he gets a salary bonus for every put out he records.

      • Earmbrister

Your upbeat mood is destroyed with one swing.

  19. JB

Freeman in the 4 hole now! How many teams can say they have a .174 hitter in the 4 hole? Oh wait…. I forgot Suarez was hitting there earlier.

  20. Mark Moore

He wouldn’t have gotten Tatis, but to look baffled and not even field it? C’mon, man!!

    • Indy Red Man

trying to let it go foul. Only chance we had

  21. Indy Red Man

This feels like the playoffs with this crowd and we’re not responding that well((

    I’ll take one win

  22. Mark Moore

Geno!! Look what you started …

    • Tom Mitsoff

This is the how not to play defense inning.

  23. Indy Red Man

? Just because they play 2B on the warning track doesn’t mean we have to? Thats an out and has to be an out!!! Their lineup is too good for gifts!

  24. JB

Why are there games where we look like a Tee ball team?

  25. Tom Mitsoff

Pitch count is high for Gutierrez. Probably five to six innings tops.

  26. Earmbrister

Nice work by Vlad in getting out of the inning with only two runs scored. Good composure

  27. Indy Red Man

Surprised India didn’t get an error on that. He had plenty of time

  28. JB

I hate watching games where they interview everyone and their mother. I would really like to watch just the game.

    • Mark Moore

And I just checked. No other audio options available aside from a San Diego feed. Maybe their radio team is better. Or maybe I listen in Spanish for a while (no, I don’t speak that language).

  29. Indy Red Man

Lets Go!!! Naquin walks and gets to 3rd. Very few Reds make 3rd on that smash with less then 2 outs

  30. Indy Red Man

Geno getting 93 mph right down the middle from a low level lefty and strands 2 more. They have to do something with him?

    • Dennis Westrick

Reds, Geno in particular, are the absolute worst in stranding runners in scoring position!

      • MBS

They showed that the Reds are #2 with RISP

  31. Mark Moore

Need at least one here. Geno’s wasn’t deep enough even though the throw was so far off it would have worked.

  32. LDS

Well at least Suarez didn’t strike out. Trade the guy and give him a new start elsewhere. He’s not helping the team.

    • Indy Red Man

Who wants a guy hitting .170 that cost $35 mil? Not happening

      • LDS

Depends on whether the buyer thinks there’s still something there. Bell has given him enough time to “work it out”. At least bench him.

      • Indy Red Man

Yeah give him atleast 4-5 days off and see what happens. He strands 15-20 guys a week and drives in 3. Cmon?

This Lopez kid at Lville 2-2 tonite & up to .397. He’s a switch-hitter too. India is a 3B. There you go! Easy peasy

      • LDS

Why call up someone that potentially could help when you still have poorly performing castoffs that can be called up.

  33. Indy Red Man

Why not have Farmer squeeze one in? Their pitcher got us with a bunt.
Their guy is just throwing fastballs? What a crock of

    • Mark Moore

      1. It isn’t in Tinker’s playbook. 2. That means Farmer doesn’t know how?

      • Mariners77

Lol, yeah – and Bell is also responsible for the national debt, Monday mornings, and the assassination of the Archduke. And my favorite album is a broken record…

    • LDS

First & third. No one out and come away with nothing. A poorly managed, not particularly good team.

      • Dennis Westrick

Only the Reds could manage not to score a run in that situation! Is the bunt or safety squeeze bunt verboten with this team! Last time I checked there are 13 ways to score a runner from 3rd with less than 2 outs!

  34. JB

Winker on second with no outs. Never makes it off the bag , inning over.
1st and 3rd no outs. 3 straight outs inning over. Frustrating

  35. ClevelandRedsFan

I’ve been rooting for Suarez to turn it around all year. But at some point, you have to accept the obvious. He’s no longer an everyday player.

    • Mark Moore

Nope. At least he won’t be pushed back to SS or cause India not to play (he really does look like a contender in the RoY race).

Unload him for a change of scenery and see if that helps. Either he or Moose need to move and either one will cost Big Bob quite a bit of cash.

  36. Old-school

Its really becoming amazing how anyone says Eugenio Suarez is the Reds starting 3b

Speak up if you think so

Nick senzel deserves at least a half season at 3b

    Geno got 2000 at bats
Nick deserves the same. Its time to move on

    • Indy Red Man

He might be there now if he was available, but he NEVER is. I said it last time when he got a few hits. Wait a month and he’ll be out and 2 weeks later….fall down go boom in the OF like a 2 year old.

For now call up Lopez at 2B and bat him 9th. 2-2 tonite = .397 and move India to 3B
Let Geno crack corn and I don’t care

      • LGR

I’ve been advocating for Alejo for awhile now to come up and bat 9th. All the dude does is it. He could be the teams Adam Frazier. Get him and India hitting in front on Wink and Nick and good things should happen.

    • Dennis Westrick

Stick a fork in him (Geno), he’s done! Nearing the halfway point in the season and Geno is batting a mile below the Mendoza line!

  37. Tom Mitsoff

Big moment here with Machado coming up. Could get out of hand quickly.

    • LDS

Yep. I had thought 3 out of 4 but it’s starting to look like the sweep is within reach. They won 6 in a row after the opening season loss. They then lost 11 of 14 including 7 in a row. Let’s hope this isn’t the start of a similar streak after the most recent 6 game streak.

  38. Mark Moore

Time to Clete. Perhaps we salvage what ever microbe is left of our dignity. Just let Doolittle pitch the rest of the game.

    Good night, all.

  39. Indy Red Man

Sweep. I’m out. 1st/3rd nobody out and we get nothing. They have 1 on 2 out and get 3+?

    Not acceptable

    • bug

It’s called “clutch” verses “choke”. The good teams hit in the clutch. The bad teams choke. The good teams don’t have a Suarez to pop up or whiff with men in scoring position. The bad teams do. No chance for Suarez to ever get a clutch hit. The only thing that amazes me is that he actually put a bat on the ball (popped up). Normally he whiffs.

  40. Dennis Westrick

Young pitchers are slow learners! Walks are BAD! And now Machado clears the bases! I’m out! Will check the final score in the morning!

    • Mark A Verticchio

This is a very poorly coached team. The Padres are making them look like a J.V. team, which at times I think they are.

  41. bug

    • bug

I guess a blind squirrel will find an acorn every now and then. I’ll take it, Geno.

  42. BatsLeftThrowsRight

Becoming an unwatchable team right now, can’t get runners in from third with less than two outs, how many times so far through four innings? Suarez is becoming a joke at the plate. Where’s Max Schrock in his rehab, I’m sure he can play third and give the team better ABS than Suarez.

  43. LDS

Heineman instead of Aquino? Really, a batter hitting less than .100 or a guy with a 1 in 7 HR rate?

  44. Old-school

Before every one quits on a 4 game sweep…. at least acknowledge the bullpen and horrific non professional performance at SS and 3b and the need to start over now at SS and 3b

    • Indy Red Man

I see Geno laughing it up when Tatis or Machado or whoever makes 3rd base. If I was hitting .167 I’d hide from real players.

I know he’s trying, but he’s not making adjustments and he’s not producing. The $11 mil checks are still cashing though. Everything is ok in his world until he’s no longer the starting 3B. Then that forces a mental change

  45. Indy Red Man

Would be such a shame if Tatis went back on the IL. He can rock on his 40 pound chain and cry himself to sleep

  46. LDS

Bases loaded, 2 out , and Suarez. Show you have something left.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Gotta give him credit. He hung in there and came through.

  47. LGR

Every squirrel gets his nut every now and then.

    • JB

Lol that’s the second time we basically wrote the same thing.

  48. RedsMonk65

Nice at-bat by Geno. Tie game again.

  49. JB

Just turned it back on. Bases loaded and Suarez up. Good grief. Holy moly the blind squirrel found the nut!!

  50. ClevelandRedsFan

The clete is off. I repeat Clete Off!

  51. Indy Red Man

Lol. Geno strands the planet on a weekly basis and the guy hangs a breaking ball when he throws 99)))))))))

    Thank you though

  52. LGR

That’ll probably buy him another 20 games of 1 home run 2 rbi ball.

  53. Tom Mitsoff

I like coming back with Gutierrez!

  54. Indy Red Man

Everyone on RLN that begs for the starters to be extended…..please take not Vlad threw 110 pitches 5 days ago and this is his worst start by far. Of course the Pads are a juggernaut when they want to be.

But my point is teams are going to 6 man rotations so pushing guys past 100 and pitching every 5 is questionable

  55. BatsLeftThrowsRight

Right back, lead off double by Padres, rolls eyes.

      • JB

You’re good. You were probably in shock for a few minutes.

  56. Tom Mitsoff

Gutierrez is tough — he doesn’t give in.

  57. Tom Mitsoff

Next four innings: Warren, Brach, Hembree, Sims

  58. Old-school

    Vlad did it again
Gave his team a chance to win
    Competitor

    • Tom Mitsoff

You bet. He has impressed me much more than I ever thought he would.

    • JB

I like that he stays calm when guys are on.

  59. Indy Red Man

Have we hit a hr besides India in this series? They’ve had a ton of them

    • LGR

Nope just India. Think this would be a good place for some of our non power rightys to just line one down the line.

  60. Indy Red Man

Nick 4 for last 24 with no walks & no xtra basehits. He was due for a little slump I guess. I think I’d put AA in RF tomorrow. Big arm helps in big park

    • bug

I concur. Nick is in a slump. He needs a day off. And we need Aquino in the line-up now and then.

  61. Indy Red Man

    Logan Morrison in…..way beHindeman out

  62. LGR

Nice one Geno. Gotta make up for that 2 rbi single.

  63. DHud

Two Herculean innings from Brach to keep us in this game and bridge the bullpen to the later innings

He deserves an atta boy in the locker room tonight

  64. RedsMonk65

Geno with ANOTHER hit! What’s going on?

  65. LGR

I figured out the formula. We talk crap about Geno, he gets hits. Lets keep it up boys and girls!

    • LDS

I think it only works every 20 games or so. Everyone starts thinking Geno’s back. Then poof, back to his old habits.

  66. MK

As Padres are obviously going for it I wonder if they would consider a Barnhart for Kim and Valenzuela (Catcher prospect). They could use a catcher upgrade for their playoff run and the Reds need to get Stephenson’s bat in the lineup more. It is Barnhart’s contract year and the Reds are not going to want to pay him.

    • DHud

I see what you’re getting at but the catching rotation they’ve got going is working – I’d vote don’t mess with it and just let Barnhart walk

    • Klugo

Shaking Stephenson off again for a 2R game winning HR.

  67. LDS

As Journey sang back in the 70s, the party’s over.

  68. Indy Red Man

Wow. 2nd time the announcer (Eric Karros?) said the hitter can’t catch heat and the pitcher hangs breaking ball. Geno was the other one. So stupid. They said he was hitting .140 on 95+ heat. You can almost always knock the bat of the hands of any hitter with that style with good fastball except Ohtani. Ignorant

    • Indy Red Man

2 crushing hits with 2 strikes. You had AG on deck vs a lefty. Walk him if you have to?

      • LGR

I mean.. You can’t walk him with how inconsistent Garretts been. But you also can’t throw a hanging breaking ball. Give him high heat with 2 strikes. Just stupid.

      • Mark A Verticchio

        At least Sims will continue to get his rest.{LOL}

      • Indy Red Man

You saw how AG mowed down that lefty. Now righties is another story

  69. Broseph

Im curios as to where the Stephenson was set up that allowed to hitters in pitchers counts to get balls over the center of the plate?

Why not go with high heat to both Pham and Kim? 88 mph slider center cut is asking for trouble.

  70. Broseph

Then Tucker gets squeezed on a high cutter. Sheesh

  71. RedsMonk65

    Well, that’s it.

Hope we can salvage one win tomorrow, at least.

Not very inspired play overall. (And I think Votto’s absence hurt them offensively and defensively.)

    • bug

Dumb move by Votto. I’d just as soon he NOT be so emotional, if he’s going to do stupid stuff like that. He struck out. Plain and simple. Maybe next time he’ll either swing or not swing, instead of making a half swing (which he is known to do so often). The only good thing about it was that him acting like that got Bell kicked out too. It’s always a good thing when Bell is booted.

      • RedsMonk65

Yes, it hurt the team early in a crucial game and left a gaping hole in the middle of the lineup. We don’t have enough quality reserve infielders on the team right now to do things like that, regardless of who said what to whom on the field.

And looking at the replays, he DID go on the swing. So in this case, he was just wrong all the way around.

  72. Mark A Verticchio

This series is playing out like we all thought it might after Thursday night. Who knows maybe Castillo can stop this tomorrow?

  73. LGR

The only bright side is the Cubs and Brewers have also been losing. So even with a Brewers win, we can only be 3 games back going into tomorrow.

  74. Mark A Verticchio

Regardless of what happens tomorrow Mahle and Miley need to come through big time against the Twins.

  75. Roger Garrett

So much gap between us and good teams and its so obvious. Our pen is awful so you have to go with Sims in the 8th period. What are we waiting on?Our best reliever hasn’t been seen in 3 games.Come on.What is going on?As Cowboy said about how Bell used Antone-It appears we are waiting for a situation that never happens.Maybe you win Thurs if he comes in and maybe you win today but we will never know.

    • bug

If Bell would have used Sims Thursday (like any manager with any common sense would have done), we WOULD have won that game. And we would have kept the Big Mo in our corner for the next game. But it was par for the course for Bell to make that stupid move. That’s what he’s famous for doing,..i.e. making bonehead moves over and over and over. An average manager would have the Reds in first place. Heck,..a bad manager would have us in first. Only the worst manager of all time would have us 3 games out at this point. Bell has cost us a minimum of 10 games this year by making moves every single Reds fan knew was the wrong move. He’s actually cost us more than that. I just remember 10 or so that he did just the opposite of what anyone else would have done,..many of them by pitching Garret in games we had won. Sad. But it is what it is. Sadder still is that the decision makers in the organization does not realize how bad Bell is.

I agree with you that Sims is average at best. But that’s better than POOR, which is what the two relievers he chose to pitch are, when we had just had an amazing 9th to score 4 runs and go ahead. He picked the two worst relievers to pitch in that inning. Hence, they both gave up two run taters. The first pitcher walked the first batter on 4 stright pitches,..then proceeded to blow the lead by throwing a pitch right down the middle. And the dude hit a tape measure homer!!! I maintain Sims was by far and away out best option at that point in that game. And I suspect 99% of the fans would have agreed with me at that point in time. But not Bell. He had to pull a bonehead move, like he is so noted for doing in that situation. Jmo.
