The Cincinnati Reds will look to keep up their winning ways tonight as they begin a 4-game series against the San Diego Padres at 8:40pm ET.

Kyle Farmer – SS Victor Caratini – C
Wade Miley – SP Joe Musgrove – SP

Starting Pitchers

Wade Miley

Through 11 starts it’s been the Wade Miley show for Cincinnati. He’s had one poor start, in Colorado, but otherwise has been fantastic. His ERA on the year sits at 2.92 through 61.2 innings while allowing just three home runs, 17 walks, and he’s struck out 51 batters.

Teams don’t run many lefties about against Miley – they’ve only had 39 plate appearances against him this season. They are hitting just .189/.231/.189 against him in those opportunities. Righties have been far more successful, but they aren’t exactly finding much success with a .226/.280/.342 line on the season against the left-handed starter.

Joe Musgrove

One of the better pitchers in the National League this season, Joe Musgrove has a 2.50 ERA through 13 games. In his 72.0 innings he’s allowed just 46 hits, walked 14 batters, and he’s struck out 96 of them.

Musgrove throws everything, including the kitchen sink. His six pitches are mixed and matched well and he doesn’t lean on any of them enough to give a hitter an idea that they could sit on any of them. Lefties have had more success against him this season – almost exclusively because they’ve had some power output against him – as they’ve posted a .186/.253/.386 line with seven home runs. Righties are hitting just .165/.224/.252 against him this season with just two home runs.

How the Cubs have 25% less chance at the playoffs with the same record as the Brewers confuses me greatly, but i guess i dont know the methodology.

    Anyway… Go Reds!

    • Indy Red Man

I think the Cubs key guys are all FAs next year so they’re expected to be sellers instead of buyers.

    • Doug Gray

It’s based on projecting the rest of the season based on what their players are expected to do. The projection systems like the Brewers players a lot more and they are projected to win 3 more games than the Cubs moving forward, which makes the difference in the projected playoff odds.

      • 2020ball

Ok cool, they’re using player projections to determine their record. Thanks, I was too lazy at the time I commented to look it up.

  2. RedsFan11

Reds will need the bats to wake up some this series. Hoping for a split!

    • LDS

I’d wager 3 of 4. I’m just not sure which way it falls. I think the Reds can surprise the Padres but they have to be on. They have to hit better than the last two games. The Padres aren’t the Brewers. My guess is they’ll hit.

  3. redsgettingbetter

I think there are other variables contained in the formula for projecting not just wins and loses

  4. Trainradio

What is Shogo’s role on this team?

    • Old-school

      Insurance till the next injury

Reds depth is helping them survive and now advance. Other teams are falling like flies due to injury

  5. RojoB

As they say, win the first one and you can’t be swept.

    ¡Vamanos Los Rojos!

  6. Old -school

“71 Sunny and perfect . Cmon its San Diego” thats funny

Im ok with Farmer playing SS in the short term but its looking like Moose is out till the All Star break at least. Hes in a boot on June 17th.

    Galvis would be super cheap
Iglesias would be my choice and would really be a huge asset to this team. Garcia is the future but hes not ready yet.

    Go reds

  7. Dennis Westrick

Nice win yesterday heading into this 4-game series with the Padres! IMO the keys to winning each game in this series is to continue the strong pitching (starters & RP), limiting the walks and score early! More importantly, need to be mindful of the Padre’s best hitter, Tatis, Jr.and minimize the impact of his hits as he will get his share of hits. And as much as possible avoid putting runners on base ahead of Tatis’ at bats! Fairly confident of at least a split of the series as 3 of the 4 pitchers the Reds are facing have losing records. Musgrove has been inconsistent since his No-No in April. Bigger challenge will scoring against Yu Darvish on Sunday! In any event let’s win Game 1, Go Reds!

  8. Indy Red Man

I’d rather not be catching SD on such a cold streak. They’re going to be fired up for this series! I’d take 2-2 all day.

RLN was big on pushing our starters so we’ll soon see how that plays out? Some teams are going w/6 starters and we’ll be pushing guys on the 5th day after throwing 100 pitches:

    Miley 103
    Gutierrez 110
    Castillo 109
    Mahle 107

We’ll see what happens? In the old days that was nothing, but I’d guess Tampa doesn’t push their starters much past 90?

  9. ClevelandRedsFan

Hunter Greene gave up back to back to back HRs in AAA debut.

    • ClevelandRedsFan

Correction, he had 1 K between those. Let’s add a little seasoning shall we?

      • 2020ball

I would love to see him in the bullpen at some point, but he needs to prove himself in AAA first.

      • Indy Red Man

Lodolo is older and left-handed so I’d rather see him with the Reds first. I’m thinking vintage Andrew Miller!

      • MBS

Right, that’s why he needed to go to AAA. AA guys weren’t challenging him. He will have to step up his game, with having to face more professional hitters.

  10. Mark Moore

Was that their all-star SS who muffed that play?

  11. Indy Red Man

Hit-n-run would’ve same them a dp there. Winker saw a ton of pitches and wasn’t going to K. Even if he did India might get the steal on a breaking ball anyway.

  12. Indy Red Man

Rockies 5-0 on Milw in the first….lollllllllllllll

    • Old-school

Braves no – hitting the cards.

Goal for this road trip is bury the cards in 4th place and get even with brewers and cubs

    • Old-school

Braves no – hitting the cards.

Goal for this road trip is bury the cards in 4th place and get even with brewers and cubs

    • Dennis Westrick

Rockies have lost a lot of games where had big leads early in the game!

  13. Dennis Westrick

Cards down 3-0 to the Braves after 6 innings as well

  14. Indy Red Man

Down 2-0 in gabp. Maybe thats why we’re winning on the road

  15. Dennis Westrick

21-pitch 1st inning for Miley! Hoping for at least 6 innings tonight from the crafty lefty!

  16. Mark Moore

Got to love that. Ultimate small ball.

  17. Indy Red Man

Miley not really the guy you want to see when you’re slumping. I’m sure they’d rather see a guy that challenges them.

Suarez .204 in June. Even though his Ks are way down, he’s still rarely barreling a ball up. That pitch last inning looked hittable. I don’t know what they’re going to do with him long term, but I’m tired of defending him. And SS? No way

    • RojoB

      “I’m tired of defending him”

      Everyone has their breaking point.

    • MBS

Suarez lack of production is baffling. The long term answer is play him, he’s not going anywhere, and the Reds will never bench that much money. Maybe if Suarez turns things around, he’d be tradeable again, but then why would you want to trade an affordable quality player.

      • Roger Garrett

Between a rock and a hard place for sure.Big money teams would trade him and eat some salary but the Reds won’t do that.He is an all or nothing hitter since he hit 49 homers in 2019.I am not sure if he will able to return to the solid hitter he once but all of us hope he does because it makes the team better.

      • Brennan

I think if we had an abundance of offensively productive infielders (like we do with outfielders) they *might* bench that much money.

I want to believe that and see no reason to think otherwise : D

  18. RojoB

Naquin must needs quit swinging at breaking balls down and in.

  19. Indy Red Man

Wade Miley! The new Louisiana Lightning….move over Ron Guidry))

  20. Mark Moore

Grounded out to position #10 – Short Fielder/Rover

  21. RojoB

Wade has the Hulk tattoo magic through 4 innings

    • MBS

And Sadak can’t help but talk about it! I find that so annoying, he ignores the custom of most fans, and all players.

      • 2020ball

eh, I personally never really liked that custom, but I’m not really a superstitious type.

  22. doofus

    GET A REAL SHORTSTOP!!!!!!!

I am so tired of listening to these clowns cover for Kyle Farmer. I am sure that he is a fine young man, but he IS a utility player!!!!!!!

For my own (so called) sanity the mute button comes in handy during these situations.

I think I will watch the rest of the game on mute.

  23. Mark Moore

Is it just me, or is that ballpark HUGE??

  24. MBS

I’m not a Padres fan, but I want one of those hats, looks sharp!

  25. Dennis Westrick

What happened to those 10-run games over the past two weeks?

  26. Roger Garrett

Reds struggle all the time on the road to score runs and if weren’t for great pitching in Mil and again tonight we would be in trouble for 3 games in a row.Just hard when your guy is no hitting the other team and our offense is asleep again.Got to scratch across some runs some how or this great effort by Miley will be wasted.Lets see what happens.Go Reds and Go Miley.

  27. Mark Moore

Wade is dealing. We’ll ride it however long it lasts. But we need a couple crooked numbers here. Would be a great way to start the road trip.

And even with as fast as Miley works, I can’t stay up late for another game on a “school night”. I end up waking up about the regular time and then the next day is a real challenge.

    • Dennis Westrick

I feel your pain! I hate these west coast games! I have to bail out soon as well as I have to get up at 6:30 am to be at work by 8 am.

  28. Old-school

Anyone against exercising Reds $10 mil option 2022 for Wade Miley?

  29. Tom Mitsoff

I think teams have discovered Naquin’s weakness at the plate.

    • Roger Garrett

Slow with some break seems to mess him up.He will have to adjust and I believe he will cause he is not an all or nothing hitter.

    • Indy Red Man

How many guys throw 60% breaking balls though and have the movement of Musgrove? Shogo would’ve made alot of sense tonite. Freeman > Suarez or Farmer tonite too. Musgrove smothers righties

  30. Indy Red Man

Mets shut out on 2 hits. Cards shut out on 3 hits. These last 2 games were close and fun, but if I wanted to watch a bunch of useless attempts at scoring then I’d watch soccer or go observe at a singles bar))

    Universal DH – Check
    Ban Shift – Check
Move the mound back a foot – Under consideration

    • Old-school

Indy- you beat me to the punch
I dont want soccer ties either
      amen brother

Reds Hot!!!! Yet scores 3 runs in 25 innings

Made playoffs and didn t score in 2games with extra innings. Chris Welsh gave great interview. If you cheat and break the rules with foreign substances- Somethings wrong if you complain

    • Broseph

DH yes. Shift maybe. Lower the mound, absolutely. Move mound back…on the fence

  31. LDS

Time for Suarez to do the thing he likes to do – swing for the fences and actually connect.

  32. Roger Garrett

Musgrove says here hit it and we can’t.

  33. Roger Garrett

Suarez never swung at a pitch did he?If so how can that be tolerated?

    • Broseph

He probably though he was going to see trash breaking balls after two strikes. Nobody fears him and he needs to start being aggressive, he’s got nothing else to lose at this point.

  34. jazzmanbbfan

Ouch. Tatis, Jr. is pretty good.

    • RojoB

“ Tatis, Jr. is pretty good…at looking a clown rounding third after his HR”

Made an adjustment to your post.

I know, if you don’t want to see it don’t let him hit HR. I would only like it if he played for the Reds though.

      • jazzmanbbfan

Your last sentence is the kicker. You would only like it if he played for the Reds. I didn’t “see” the home run as I don’t have TV but I can appreciate his talent. I don’t really care if he went around the bases doing back flips and cartwheels. He’s a talent that I would love having on my team.

  35. Indy Red Man

Lefty on deck? Cmon man? The one guy that you can’t let beat you.

  36. RojoB

I was hoping I wouldn’t have to see that clown show around the bases tonight but alas

  37. Roger Garrett

No hitter gone, shutout gone and ball game over. You right Indy just can’t let Tatis make the difference but this game is on the offense or lack of.Reds lucked out against the Brew Crew and their bad bad offense but we will have to score to beat the Pads.

    • RojoB

Tatis got just enough of a high FB out of the zone. Great pitch, Tatis just got enough of it.

    • jazzmanbbfan

Hmmm. You said the game was over the other day when it wasn’t and the Reds ended up winning. There’s a reason they play the full 9 innings.

  38. Mark Moore

Have to tap out (not actually Clete-ing). It’s late here in The Old North State.

Here’s hoping we can battle back with something and I see happy numbers in the morning.

  39. Dennis Westrick

In an earlier post I cautioned about Tatis, Jr. and the fact that he is the most dangerous hitter in the Padre lineup! Regardless, the Reds need to put up a crooked number soon!

    • Indy Red Man

Crooked? I’d take 1 and get to the 10th, but everything looking Oval tonite.

Thats why I quit watching last year. I never 1 inning of their late winning streak. I got tired of no offense

  40. RojoB

Great at bat and hit by Barney

    Stinkin’ shift

  41. Indy Red Man

Shift sucks offense out of the game again. NFL is King and they opened up the game to allow more offense. Take notes!

    • Old-school

This is unwatchable baseball. Eugenio suarez and kyle farmer at 3b and SS are unwatchable and why reds aren in first place by 5 games.

    • Broseph

How? By not allowing players to rip a unprotected players head off? They didn’t give the offense extra players or secret maneuvers.

I’m with you on lack of offense in mlb, but football offense is only good because the game has shifted to a pass heavy league.

  42. Dennis Westrick

For those paying attention the Padres have only one (1) hit off of Miley! Unfortunately it was a HR by Tatis, Jr. Point is, Miley has done his job! Time for the Reds hitters to step it up!

  43. Dennis Westrick

Somebody please issue an APB for the Reds offense!

    • Old-school

APB to suarez for no show at 3b since 2019 and APB to nick krall/Reds FO for no plan at ss since Wayne Krivsky

      • LDS

Totally agree. Trade him for a SS. This game and the division are both winnable.

    • RojoB

This Musgrove guy is pretty good too. They haven’t seen a pitcher that throws their timing off from the right side lately. The closest has been the lefty Lauer. They really couldn’t hit him either.

I think it’s a dose of reality to what the lineup can expect to do or not do against playoff pitching.

Still doesn’t take away the fun of the last 2 weeks for me though—this time

  44. Indy Red Man

Well we’ll try them tomorrow. Need 2 of 3 to stay in range!

  45. RojoB

Well- if SD leaves Musgrove in for the 8th maybe the Reds will get him measured too

Padres have gotten the measure of Miley (just a little)

    2 solo HR. C’mon offense!

  46. Roger Garrett

Shift hurts but so has launch angle and punch outs don’t matter.Pitchers have got better and hitters haven’t adjusted and won’t because the long ball rules.Suarez says he wants to hit 50 homers and he may.He also may set the record for strikeouts which is more probable.Don’t even need anybody on the right side of the diamond when he comes up including the right fielder. Not picking on him its just the way the game is and the way the players play it.MLB may wind the ball tighter so it goes farther or lower the mound or change the strike zone to get more scoring. We shall see.

  47. Indy Red Man

Thats stupid! I’m not rooting for season ending injuries but double ILs is ok by me

Same as Rizzo coming in 20 feet from the hitter on a bunt. A liner off the knee and some spaghetti would end that real quick. It ruins the integrity of the game?

    • RojoB

      I’m glad Machado missed it.

I’m disappointed that Cast swung at the first pitch. I’m disappointed that Naquin hit it right at someone, but he did hit it hard.

If they can keep it to 2 runs there’s a chance in the 9th

  48. Tom Mitsoff

Interesting opportunity for Warren. He can get himself in the late-game rotation with a good performance here.

    • Roger Garrett

Not sure what was gained by letting Miley go out for the 8th but Warren got the job done.Guy throws strikes and throws gas. Both play.

  49. LDS

Votto-Suarez-Farmer for the 9th doesn’t inspire much hope. Especially since 2-0 may not be the hurdle.

    • RojoB

Still 2-0 and Tatis pulled one, so Suárez may pull one too.

      Joey get on base!

      • RojoB

Suárez pulled something all right lol.

      • LDS

I guess I’m going to have to cut JV a little slack since he broke his hand. Suarez, not so much. Stephenson needs to play – a lot

  50. RojoB

Suárez looking breaking ball so he lets a fat one go

    SMH

    • RojoB

Some bat trips to the dish for #7 today. Guessing guessing guessing

  51. Roger Garrett

I wish Suarez the best and we need him but its going to be a long summer if this continues.Just hard to justify in my mind to continue to play him hoping he gets better.Guess with Moose and Senzel both out we have to ride him but boy oh boy.

  52. JB

Why do people keep saying this game is over? “You Gotta Believe “

    • RojoB

Well- it is over just in the direction we like!

  53. RojoB

You know, i’m always extra excited when Mark Melancon gets embarrassed

Makes the tie extra extra sweet

And as i’m typing India sees that curve that Barnhart warned him of in the dugout and goes Tatis on it lol

  54. Roger Garrett

Well shut my mouth we ain’t don yet.The rookie ties it up at 2-2.

      • kevinz

        Love it for sure.
Got to close this out though.
        Cross fingers.

  55. Old-school

Stephenson and India are showing why they were top picks

    Cut from a different cloth

  56. Tim

YYYYYEEESSSSS!!!! Bye Bye Melancon. Love these REDS.

  57. Earmbrister

Man, I tune into mlb.com at 1-2 with 2 outs. Walk away from my phone and suddenly it’s 4-2.

    GO REDS!!!

  58. Indy Red Man

Sims has to be out I would think. Hembree or AG?

  59. Roger Garrett

Again shut my mouth and call me whatever you want to.The rookies have made it 4-2.

    • RojoB

Roger I know you’re glad to eat crow right here, and this time it probably tastes like filet mignon my friend!

  60. RojoB

Now—this shows us how good of a game Musgrove was pitching

  61. Indy Red Man

I was about to blow a gasket when he didn’t pinch hit for Farmer. Shogo could hit better then Farmer blindfolded

    • JB

Same here until they said lefties only hit .103 against him.

      • Indy Red Man

Yeah but Joey/Tucker were 2-2 when its Farmer vs Shogo then it doesn’t matter

  62. Stoney

Incredible!!!! This is fun! Let’s finish them off. What a run this team is on.

  63. Tom Mitsoff

This is some amazing stuff, gentlemen. Now it’s Ryan Hendrix for the save!

    • Roger Garrett

Amazing may not be the word but I can’t think of an another one so yeah its AMAZING.

  64. Kevin Patrick

    Are you kidding me?!
    Let’s close it out now…

  65. Roger Garrett

To show you how far I was off I thought Shogo at least for Farmer and if not him at least for the pitcher.Wrong wrong wrong and if we can steal this one I can be wrong tomorrow and the next day and so on

  66. Melvin

It’s now like extra innings. Get the batter.

  67. RojoB

Padres playing smart baseball and take away the DP.

Was Votto told not to hold Machado or was that on his own?

    Welp doesn’t matter. 4-4

    • LDS

You knew after he walked the lead off batter and went 2-0 on the next batter that this was coming.

  68. Indy Red Man

Hendrix sucks. Righthanded Perez….hes gotta go. Can’t get behind or walk big league hitters

  69. steve d

    fielder’s indifference in a 2-run game?

  70. kevinz

Gut Punch feeling right there boo..

    • RojoB

      Missing Tejay right there.

Would be sweet if they can still rally and win though

      • Indy Red Man

        Even Lorenzen there could’ve worked?

  71. Old-school

    3b is awful
    SS is awful
    Bullpen is awful

Those still hold true in mid June

    • RojoB

Which makes the run they were on so interesting

  72. Indy Red Man

I’ve been on Bell’s side, but his participation trophy mindset cost us tonite. Hembree was off yesterday and he’s far superior to Hendrix. He just struck out 5 of 6 the other day. Lets get to the 10th

    • LDS

I’m not seeing extra innings. The bullpen is reverting to its mean.

      • LDS

Told you – count on AG (and Bell). It shouldn’t have been Hendrix.

  73. Mark

Was Ryan Hendrix the best choice? Why? Righty righty?

  74. Roger Garrett

Got to wonder why not Sims or why not Garrett to face Hosmer.

    • Indy Red Man

3 batter minimum so no AG. Sims went 1.1 yesterday and closed the day before. He’s not available

    • Hanawi

Three batter rule would have kept Garrett from coming in to face Hosmer.

  75. Roger Garrett

Yeah I forgot about the 3 batter rule.

  76. Indy Red Man

Wow….AG? 97 mph and he grooves one for the guy

This series scared me when I saw it a month ago. I hope we don’t get swept after this

  77. Melvin

    Well…that’s disappointing ain’t it.

  78. Roger Garrett

That was just an awful turn of events wasn’t it.

  79. JB

Ugh bullpen was going so good. Got to hand it to the offense for battling back.

    • Indy Red Man

It was the Brewers I think. They had 1 hit in 6 innings in Coors tonite. Our pen still sucks outside of TA

  80. kevinz

    Geez tough one.
Reminder of the issue at hand with this team.
Shame imo with talent overall elsewhere.

  81. RojoB

And the bullpen has returned to earth

  82. Indy Red Man

I told you guys Warren was better then most of these scrubs. He came in with 2 on & nobody out and put up a zero. AG can’t even get 2 outs. Hendrix is just as bad

  83. Roger Garrett

We just experienced the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat and about 15 minutes.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Yeah, it’s too bad. Apparently Sims, Brach and Hembree were all unavailable.

    • Indy Red Man

Well heres to the AG defenders that say “His career era isn’t good because of when he was a starter, but he’s actually a good reliever”

      No.he.isnt

      • RojoB

The first two weeks I said, “he isn’t Wandy Peralta” and I stand by that.

        He’s now worse

  84. B-town fan

Thrilling 9th inning, the Reds fought hard. For what ever reason, Garrett just doesn’t have it this year.

    • Chris Holbert

It seems teams are not swinging at the slider out of the strike one, and the only spot Garrett can throw the fastball is down the middle.

    • TR

A truly exciting game up 4-2 with 3 outs to go and then….

  85. Melvin

I think AG would do well with a change of scenery from the Reds.

    • RojoB

I think the Reds would do well with a change of scenery by AG.

I anticipate a lot of scenery change by next spring to make way for the young players to take over, and hopefully, action by the FO this season to strengthen the bullpen because this team has too much potential.

Go get Richard Rodriguez and maybe another Pirates reliever. Now before more games like this happened. Surely Hembree was available tonight. I don’t get it.

    • Indy Red Man

Hembree pitched Sunday, Monday, and Tues so probably not

  87. Indy Red Man

Milwaukee had to get a SS and they did. Even though TA is coming and Lorenzen is coming……if the Reds want to compete then the front office HAS to go get a guy or two. Lefty is preferable. Its mandatory. The other guys that are B- C+ pitchers will get burned out otherwise

AG should have the ability to close games and get three outs in the 9th. You can tell he has no confidence in his pitches and his manager does not even want to use him.

    • Indy Red Man

0-2 pitch as well. He’s wild with walks and he’s wild in the strike zone. Enough is enough. He just hit 97 and he’s grooving an 0-2 breaking ball to get golfed out of the park? Throw some heat on the outside or try to break a slider on the outside corner. Stupid

Yeah Erik that last sentence “You can tell he has no confidence in his pitches and his manager does not even want to use him.” is the elephant in the room.

Hendrix needs to stop nibbling. Garrett can’t get beat on 0-2 pitch by the eighth place hitter.

Historic comeback with great Abs by the catching duo turns into a devastating loss.

The two rookie staring pitchers are up next. We shall see how they respond?

Why is Shogo buried on this bench without a sniff at getting a start lately, just don’t understand it.

Simms couldn’t give you two batters tonight after that historic comeback?

Caratini got a carrot and knew what to do with it

This game should put the Reds ownership and front office on notice: figure out how to build around India, Stevenson, and Winker. The team can do well without Suárez now

    • Indy Red Man

Geno had a good series in St. Louis and I thought he was coming around, but tonite was horrible. That at-bat in the 9th told the story. Took a 2-1 pitch right down broadway and then swung on ball 4 on the 3-2 pitch. Pulling his head and coming off the ball. Its been the same story all year

    • LGR

Alejo Lopez has 17 more hits in 25 less games than Suarez. Is he hitting as many homers? No. Good amount of doubles though, and the Reds could use another on base guy more than Suarez’s solo run potential. And if you do wanna keep him in the lineup, hit him in front of the pitcher. Will get less to hit but when they do make mistakes maybe he can do his solo home run thing.
