Starting Pitchers

Tyler Mahle

After getting beaten up against San Francisco in a 19-4 loss on May 20th, Tyler Mahle has allowed just six runs in his last four starts (2.31 ERA) while allowing just 18 baserunners in 23.1 innings.

Teams still haven’t quite figured out that left-handed hitters aren’t having much success at all against Tyler Mahle. In 138 plate appearances this season lefty have hit just .182/.283/.289 against Mahle. Right-handed hitters are hitting .248/.281/.436 against him in 141 plate appearances. Mahle has also been a much better pitcher on the road, holding hitters to a .181/.253/.284 line and he’s got a 1.65 ERA on the road (6.93 at home – yikes).

Freddy Peralta

One of the best pitchers in baseball this season, Freddy Peralta is currently sporting a 2.25 ERA through 68.0 innings in 12 starts and one relief appearance. He’s allowed just 31 hits – though seven of them have been home runs – to go along with 29 walks and 98 strikeouts.

The Reds have faced Peralta twice this season and twice in the last month. On May 23rd they scored two runs in 4.2 innings against him in Cincinnati. Last week they scored a run against him in 4.0 innings in Cincinnati. Lefties and righties are both having no luck against him. Righties have hit .136/.227/.246 against him, while lefties have hit just .132/.250/.298 against him. His splits at home are terrifyingly good. Batters have a .092/.196/.191 line against him and he’s posted a 1.37 ERA in 39.1 innings in Milwaukee this season.

Mike Moustakas pulled from his rehab assignment

Last night Mike Moustakas went 1-3 for the Triple-A Louisville Bats in his first rehab game. But today he’s back in Cincinnati to have his foot examined after experiencing some soreness.

  1. Old Big Ed

Not even counting Jonathan India, Mike Freeman is about the 7th-string third baseman for this franchise. Suarez, Moustakas, Senzel, Blandino, Max Schrock and Alejo Lopez are or should be ahead of him.

    • IndyRedsFan

Yeah….but, Moustakas, Senzel, Blandino and Schrock are all on the IL.

Lopez has something like 25 AAA at bats, and isn’t on the 40 man roster.

That sorta makes Freeman next man up.

      • Jim t

Team has been doing very well with the next man up approach. Hope it continues today. Would love for them to leave there with a sweep. The Cubs are facing The Mets ace today. A win today could be big in the standings.

    • RojoB

I think his parents must be at the game

      • Roger Garrett

I hope he bounces back from getting picked off last night.Rare when pinch runner gets picked off especially at second or third.Hope he is ready today and makes up for that mistake last night.

      • LDS

Freeman is another flaw in Bell’s L/R platoon system. This year and for his career, Freeman has hit lefties much better than righties. Bell seems to be winging it sometimes.

      • 2020ball2

Who is he “L/R platooning” with? Looks to me like he’s just giving a guy a day off.

      • 2020ball

What “L/R platoon” are you even talking about? Looks to me like he’s just giving a guy a day off.

    • Rod Andrews

You need to call Bell and tell him. He probably doesn’t realize that Freemons that bad!

      • 2020ball

Jeebus, a manager uses a guy off his bench in one game and people are freaking out about it

  2. Dennis Westrick

Prior to the start of this 3-game series with the Brewers I was going to be happy with the Reds winning 2 out of 3. Now that that goal has been reached I say we get out the brooms and go for a clean sweep! Go Reds! Score early and often today!

    • RojoB

      I want the sweep also.

They’re playing with house money today, so hopefully they’ll play loose and get a W!

  3. JB

If its plantar fasciitis Moustakas could be out the whole year. It’s an odd injury that really has no timetable. Go with what you got in the dugout. Next man up. The bullpen is doing it now and the team seems to be a really tight group.

    • Jim t

Odd that he would hurt himself rehabbing.

    • Melvin

Well the only silver lining to that would be placing him on the 60 day IL and freeing up a roster spot. Sounds like Lopez is a prime candidate for a call up.

  4. Mark Moore

I see we’re starting right away with the nibbling. Could be a long day …

    • Dennis Westrick

Yep! Against a Team with a .210 BA, worst in all of MLB

  5. Roger Garrett

Walk and a hit batter.Man just wish we didn’t help them so much,

  6. JB

Brewers lineup is basically backups from the 4th guy down. Mahle and the Reds need to take advantage of this today .

  7. Dennis Westrick

On a day we need Mahle to be sharp & efficient he gives up a walk and a HBP in the first inning, again running up his pitch count early!

  8. Mark Moore

Nibbled his way out of THAT mess.

    Time for some crooked numbers.

    • Dennis Westrick

It’s like being in a Pet Store with nothing but Guinea Pigs, Gerbils and Hamsters!

  9. Indy Red Man

That was old school Civil War surgery there.

  10. Old-school

    Cmon RLN
    Faith and mustard seeds
    Mahle beat scherzer
    He beat the stupid cubs
    He beat STL
Reds are 10-3 in his starts

I want Mahle on the mound today

If he doesnt deliver- so be it but hes been a huge part of the SP and answer ed the call of duty to stop some losing skids

    • RojoB

I think the angst is that he’s running up his pitch count when we’d like him to pitch 7 or 8 today

I think he’s tops except for that

      • RojoB

        Man another BB

Is he a victim of substance-gate?

      • RojoB

He’s battled but 38 pitches in 2 innings is a bummer. I think he’ll rally with a couple of quick innings to get on schedule (mustard seed)

      • Amarillo

I think every pitcher is, honestly.

  11. JB

Mahle is battling today. He is looking for that groove.

  12. Roger Garrett

Reds will have to dust of this sleep walking at the plate if we are to win today.

    • Dennis

One trait of the “70’s Reds is that they would often “sleep-walk” thru the first 6 innings or so and then wake up in the latter innings to score more than enough runs to win! Me personally, I would like for this team to score early and often!

  13. Roger Garrett

The awfulness at the plate continues.

    • RojoB

Hey, Mrs. Freeman is in the stands. Have a heart.

      • Roger Garrett

He saw 5 pitches and right now thats a win for this team.

  14. Old-school

Hope moose is ok and feel bad for him .

But this why you dont sign players over 30 to $50 mil contracts

See All stars Scooter Gennett Adam Duvall and Zach cozart. Lots of RLN commenters wanted $50 million extensions for those guys.

Dick Williams legacy is going down the toilet. Dodgers trade a farce for puig and matt kemp for 2 top 100 picks??? and Moose turns 33? And shogo 20 mil who never plays?

Clearly Bell and Krall never wanted Shogo.

Stop signing players after age 30 to 8 figure deals !!!!!

  15. Dennis

Peralta has a No-Hitter thru 3! Maybe that’ll jinx him!

    • LDS

Peralta beat them last time also. They need to wake up.

  16. Roger Garrett

Maybe we would have done better against their best starters.Could not do any worse.

  17. JB

No play at the plate on Vogelbach running from 2nd? He even slowed down at 3rd. Wake up guys.

    • Indy Red Man

I don’t get it? Nick charges last night when the guy was going to score easily then he just jogs in today when the guy wanted to hold up.

    • RojoB

Makes you wonder how bad they want it sometimes

  18. Dennis

For the love of Pete (Rose), stop with the free passes via walks or HBP!

  19. Roger Garrett

Reds just content with winning the first two games.Bags are packed and the bus and plane are waiting.Same old Reds.

    • Indy Red Man

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

      Have some faith sir!

    • 2020ball

haha, typical negative response when none is warranted. You realize Peralta is one of the best in the league right? I’m asking this ignoring the fact that while I’m typing this the Reds are winning.

  20. Old-school

Its 1-0 but this game is starting to look like a bad bullpen meltdown.

Get Doolittle warming up for the 10 spot.

  21. Dennis

Good Grief Charlie Brown! 63 pitches thru 3 innings! Yikes! Better get Do Little warmed up in the pen!

  22. Old-school

Brewers have left 6 ob in 3 innings and only lead 1-0

Someone on reds offense needs to step up.they did nothing last night

    • Dennis

I’m with you brother! Offense last night was “offensive”! Scored 2 runs in the top of the 10th without a hit as I recall

      • Old-school

Casty of course and naquin sprays a double oppage?

  23. Indy Red Man

Naquin with the huge knock there! Shadows over the plate so runs could be limited!
If Bell wants to play AA over Naquin vs lefties then I can live with it, but Heineman? Cmon?

  24. Jim t

This game was never going to be a cake walk. Peralta is nails at home. We got a shot but a betting person would not wager against the home team today.

    • Indy Red Man

Reds are 10-3 on Mahle’s starts so thats no cake walk for them either. Mahle just needs to throw strikes nad get thru 6.

  25. JB

Like Indy said, with the shadows moving in we really needed that run.

  26. Dennis

Gotta bail out fellas! Duty calls in the form of a 3:30 – 4:30 meeting! Root for a lot of runs! Gonna need them it looks like based upon current trends!

    • 2020ball

What current trend are you even referring to? Other than the trend of Reds fans whining if they dont score 10 runs?

  27. docproc

I’m late to this, but still seething that Castellanos didn’t make a throw to the plate to cut down Chris Farley.

  28. Jim t

Really would love to get 6 innings out of Tyler today but it’s looking shaky at this point.

    • JB

It’s possible. Couple of 12 or 13 pitch innings and that would put him about 100. He has been effectively wild today. He gets past the next 3 batters and its possible.

  29. Indy Red Man

Tucker back to hitting like Tucker. Its time to start phasing in Stephenson as the starting catcher!

    • Jim t

Indy, Tucker is 5-12 against Peralta. 2 Doubles and a homer.

  30. Old-school

Every Reds fan appreciates Kyle Farmers effort. But- hes in no way shape or form an everyday MLB SS

He filled in admirably but if Moose is out more than a week
nick krall needs to call orioles and angels and marlins tonight

    Galvis is easy cheap acqusition
Iglesias is a human highlight film and affordable.

Marlins have miguel Rojas- all star numbers until he dislocated finger and has complex options in 2022 and about to come back

Pull the trigger Krall and get a SS

    • RojoB

Galvis had the laziest at bat in history during the 2020 “playoff” game against Atlanta. I would pass on him

      • 2020ball

He’s better than Farmer, Shrock, Freeman, Blandino, etc. etc.

Are we really not going to improve the team based on one AB?

      • Melvin

I would rather bring up someone then trade for Galvis or try someone else there of course.

  31. Indy Red Man

“Fat guy with a litttttle bat”

Sung to the tune of “Fat guy in a litttttle coat’

    I’ll always miss Chris Farley((

  32. Old-school

Brewers have 5 players in line up hitting below .200

They have all 9 hitting below .251

This brewers team isnt winning anything . Ask reds fans who had trevor bauer Cy young and didnt score a post season run

    Hitting matters

    • Indy Red Man

Well Wong will be coming back soon. Narvaez is hitting .320 & Adames isn’t playing today either. Cain? I don’t know when he’s coming back. They’re not good hitters overall, but this lineup today is their B squad.

  33. Jim t

Tyler at 90 pitches and is set to lead off the top of 6th. Do you hit for him?

  34. RedsMonk65

A little rocky to start, but Mahle seems to have settled into a groove. Retired 9 straight. 10 Ks in 5 innings is spectacular.

Now we need to score some runs!

  35. RedsMonk65

Not only is Wink out trying to stretch a single into a double, but he appears to be hurt on the play. Not good…..

  36. Indy Red Man

Winker is great, but his track record has some Winkzel in there. He’s never had more then 338 at-bats. Gear down the Rickey Henderson stuff please. We need your bat!

    • RojoB

If he had some of Senzel’s speed though he would not have committed the TOOTBLAN

In hoping he just knocked the wind out of himself and/or hurt his pride

  37. Mark Moore

Looks like Mahle will give us 6. Don’t want to go to extras, so let’s score in the 7th, 8th, and 9th.

  38. JB

Mahle is a bulldog. Impressed with the way he battled today.

    • 2020ball

Early still, but he’s essentially been the Reds ace. Surprising, that – not what I expected prior to the season.

  39. VaRedsFan

wow….Votto on his horse scoring from 1st on that hit.
    He is pumped!!!!

    • Jim t

Someone asked a question earlier why not start Stephenson today. That hit makes Tucker 5-12 against Peralta.

      • JB

Stephenson still has a way to go to match Tuckers defense. Especially throwing to second. They are a good dual behind the plate.

      • 2020ball

I would never expect many here to look deeper into something, especially if it involves numbers. They’d rather reach for anything to bash the manager.

Tucker’s been great this year, even when he isn’t hitting.

      • Old-school

        @2020
Didnt u say india was garbage and u know baseball and india will never hit over.240 because u know baseball?

      • 2020ball

Haha, no of course not. I probably said something to the effect that he hadnt earned playing time yet which he’s clearly done now. I never once said they should send him down.

Youre either referring to someone else or you’re just overblowing something I said for some crazy reason. I would never refer to a player I liked as “garbage”, try again friend.

      • Old-school

So you never said he would never hit .240 and you know baseball?

      • 2020ball

No. Whats your endgame here dude?

  40. Broseph

Love Votto man, but I’m surprised he didn’t just stick to the dirt when he slid into home, or end up going back in time. He was going maybe 3mph before stuffer stepping to 1.5 mph by the time he slid.

It’s plays like that and the 10th inning runs last night that show OBP skills do matter.

    • JB

I’ll take a team of starting 8 .350 OBP guys anytime.

  41. Jim t

Well with two lefties coming up next inning to you bring in AG?

  42. Mark Moore

Feeling slightly more optimistic as I keep an eye on the screen (and this thread) during my meetings. Glad to see that throw to the plate fell apart and JV scored the go ahead run. Nice inning by Brach.

  43. Indy Red Man

Freeman and Shrock both have pretty nice swings. Not alot of power, but they might be full-time platoon vs rhp if they played for Milwaukee.

    • 2020ball

Schrock has a .533 SLG, which is plenty of power. SSS of course.

      • Indy Red Man

Well he played a full season in the PCL with 4 hrs. 24 career minor league HRs. I know he launched one for the Reds on the day he got hurt.

      • 2020ball

Ya, his minor numbers for sure are a better indicator

      • TR

Could it be that Doolittle and Garrett are slowly getting it together. If so, that’s a big positive.

    • Old Big Ed

Bell not only bet on the Brewers; he bet the over.

  44. JB

Doolittle hitting 94. Where has that been?

  45. Steelerfan

Ok, who was NOT terrified when Doolittle came in?

  46. RojoB

Kudos to doolittle for getting two batters out. Kudos to bell for not letting him pitch to more than three batters

    • JB

I’ve never been more proud of them both. I’m crying. Lol

  47. Steelerfan

We risk burning him out, but I think bringing in Simms was the right move…

  48. Indy Red Man

Their 10th inning run last night is unearned. Our pen has suddenly picked it up? I think its more on the Brewers sorry hitting, but they’re not walking people. Lets see how they look in SD?

    • Steelerfan

Looks like they are going to let Richards work through it rather than burn another pitcher so it is a nice chance.

      He typed before second out…

  49. RojoB

    Naquin walks!

A good omen for the inning

      • 2020ball

Really like calling for the steal there though.

      • RojoB

Was it supposed to be a hit and run?

      • 2020ball

hmm, not sure. I thought it was a straight steal.

  50. Steelerfan

Well at least we don’t have to worry about whether to pinch hit for Sims if he came up…

  51. RedsMonk65

    SWEEP IN MILWAUKEE!!!

    How sweet is is.

    • TR

It is sweet. The Brewers, over the last 15-20 years, have often been tough on the Reds.

  52. JB

Bradley with a .499 OPS and he was looking for a multiple year big contract. Ouch Oh by the way Go Reds

  53. 2020ball

Sweep! Man has this team come alive.

Will the “same ‘ol Reds” comments end finally?

  54. Slicc50

I take back every negative comment I made about this baseball team! Big sweep!

  55. JB

Who needs Antone! Reds Bullpen is getting it done.

  56. Slicc50

I was thinking 3-4 trip would be ok, we start off 3-0!

  57. John C.

I am certainly excited about what is going on with the bullpen but I can’t stop thinking that these last 6 games have been against teams that can’t hit their way out of a paper bag. We need them to keep going in SD. Good pitchers park and the Padres have been really struggling offensively.
