Mike Moustakas to begin a rehab assignment tomorrow

The Reds are sending Mike Moustakas to Triple-A tomorrow to begin a rehab assignment with the Bats. They’ll be on the road in Omaha. If things go as hoped, Moustakas likely won’t be there for long and could join the team in San Diego.

Interested to see if AA in CF works and if he dials in quickly and hits.

At least there will be no rain-outs or delays on this stretch. Let’s hope Bernie doesn’t get to do the slide.

    • Rex

If AA could catch just a little fire it will make for a good road trip.

SD is slipping a bit, may be the best time to play them.

  2. Old-school

Reds get an opportunity to play next 7 games against first place brewers and likely playoff team in San Diego

Let the sorting begin in the NL central.
I dont see the brewers winning next 100 games at a champions pace due to their offense. I dont see the Reds either with their bullpen but I do like watching this SP staff and a nucleus of hitters

    Go reds

  3. Tod A Held

The Reds chance for Championship play are best If Barry Larkin was in a managerial head coaching position . Its something that should be pursued. He is too good of a baseball man to let get away. Win-win

    • MBS

I like Larkin, but being a great player doesn’t mean you’re a great manager. He could, but I’d hate to have a Tony Perez situation happen to one of my favorites to wear a Reds uniform.

      • Melvin

I doubt anyone would treat Larkin that Jim Bowden treated Tony Perez.

      • TR

Maybe not as manager but I can see Barry Larkin as a future GM of the Reds.

  4. Ohiojimwalker

Fa graphs computers are still drinking Milwaukee’s famous I see,

    • Doug Gray

They’ve seen the price of GPU’s….. drinking is the only option.

      • ClevelandRedsFan

Are Vogelbach and Derek Johnson somehow brothers?

    • Eric

Wow I can’t believe Bell left him in for the whole 6th. Guess he learned after pulling Castillo early his last start and the bully blowing it up. Let a starter who is pitching well clean up his own mess.. Pitch counts be D#$@¥D.

  5. MBS

I’m very excited about watching VG and TS making starts. Both have been forgotten about, and if either or both pan out, it’s a huge win for the Reds. Pair them with the duo of HG and NL, and the Reds will be in very good shape for the foreseeable future.

  6. MBS

I could be wrong, but I think this is AA first start of the year

      • MBS

What’s the point of “this time”? You act like you want civil discussions, but when you disagree with someone, you take jabs at them. No one calls you out, because we appreciate the content, but you should take your own advice.

  7. Indy Red Man

6 quick games with the Brewers and completely skip Woodruff & Burnes? They have to take their series and go 3-3 imo! You’re not going to get a better opportunity then that!

  8. Indy Red Man

Yelich throws about like Shogo….be ready to take advantage every chance you get!

  9. Old-school

Reds offense is starting to grow because of plate discipline by hitters.

Joey votto and Jesse winker are elite
    Stephenson is very good
    India is decent

A deep offense 1-8 starts with players who dont swing at balls

    • Tom Reeves

Castellanos is also disciplined, but in a different way. He doesn’t over swing and I think it makes a huge different for hitting a wide variety of pitches.

  10. VaRedsFan

6th straight game with an RBI for Votto.

    • Slicc50

I like it. Seems like guys don’t value the RBI these days. The way some of these guys are getting on base, you would love to see more of that!

  11. Mark Moore

I just saw an ice cream truck go by in front of my house. We’re on a very rural road, so this is not a normal thing. I’m taking it as a sign …

  12. Old-school

Thats a 31 pitch productive inning with a run by the offense. Good start

  13. Indy Red Man

31 pitches and a run. No complaints from me, but Vlad just faced these guys. It could be tough?

    • Mark Moore

Only his 6th. His numbers don’t look that great to me. Not sure why he bats 2nd for Counsel and the Crew.

  14. Indy Red Man

Outside corner? Hard guy to find a weak spot because he’s not that tall and has good plate coverage.

  15. Mark Moore

A lot of pitches being thrown in that inning.

Need to put up another crooked number, please.

  16. Melvin

Good job Aquino. 🙂 He will try to steal.

  17. LDS

I wish the Reds had gotten more in the first. JV grounding out and Suarez striking out. At least, JV’s ground out got one in but the Reds could have done serious damage. So it goes.

  18. Indy Red Man

Just take your K. Bunts never end well for us and I mean NEVER

  19. RedsMonk65

    India 2 for 2. Says, “I ain’t sittin’!”

  20. Indy Red Man

If Vlad just takes the K then its 3-0. Farmer scores I think. Hopefully we’ll get them in anyway!!

  21. VaRedsFan

India blistered that ball @111 mph

  22. RedsMonk65

Woo-hoo! 4-1. I like the looks of this.

  23. Mark Moore

Good things happen when you put the ball in play … nice work, guys!

  24. Indy Red Man

C’mon know Vlad!!! Bottom of the order….put up a zero and keep Uncle Mo on our side!

  25. Old-school

4 runs and 53 pitches in 2 innings

Zinter has this offensive approach back

  26. Melvin

Man. Take away Farmer and this lineup has to look pretty intimidating to a pitcher and his team. Nothing against Naquin. He’s good but Aquino adds that intimidating factor that very few can. If we were somehow smart enough to try India at SS when Moose comes back….that’s a pretty good lineup.

    • Indy Red Man

Suarez back to SS. Try to outscore people!

AA with a nice catch. Glad to have him back, but he’s not playing over Naquin vs rhp.
Dude is on pace for 30/100 as a platoon player

      • Melvin

Yeah I know about Naquin. Either one adds to the lineup. Suarez to SS again? That’s too much of a defensive sacrifice. Bell probably will though.

      • Mark Moore

Yep – that’s what will happen so both Moose and India can play.

  27. Mark Moore

Bit of a run for AA … nicely done!

  28. MBS

Nice play Aquino, he had a good reaction, with good speed

  29. Melvin

I told you he could play CF 🙂 Aquino!!

  30. Indy Red Man

I don’t think Vlad is long for this one. If we win its gonna be 8-6 type of game

    • MBS

I’m afraid you might be right today. Maybe not the score, but he is not ass aggressive today. Might only get 4 + innings

  31. Melvin

Good job to keep the runner at 2nd from advancing.

  32. VaRedsFan

Bloop single followed by a bloop double…
    Sac Fly by the pitcher.
It might be one of those high scoring affairs

  33. MBS

Disappointing giving up a run so far to the bottom of their order.

  34. Indy Red Man

Good pitch to Beverly Hills Ninja…..jammed him.

These kind of games where half their lineup is lefty to face our righty are where we could really use a guy like Nick Lodolo! Go 3 innings and keep the lead. AG isn’t dependable enough

  35. Dennis Westrick

45 pitches thru 2 innings! Not a good trend for Vlad

    • MBS

1 more inning like that Vlad, and we might be able to get 6 from you tonight

  36. Mark Moore

Trade goose egg innings – that’s not a bad option.

  37. Rex

we have seen him look rocky and get right before

  38. Indy Red Man

Man if Vladdy can master that breaking ball with late movement over the outside corner then he can pitch in this league for a long while!

  39. Dennis Westrick

Better inning Vlad! Keep it up!

  40. Dennis Westrick

Need to attack the Brewer hitters! They are hitting .213 as a Team!

  41. Tom Mitsoff

Both pitchers are getting it into gear. Hope Gutierrez can go at least six.

    • MBS

Two 14 pitch innings in a row. He might get that 6 for you tonight!

  42. MBS

Adames had 3 hits off Gutierrez last time. 0 for 2 with a K tonight.

  43. Mark Moore

Slow moving game. I’m not going to last through the whole thing given the 8:10 start my time.

    • JB

You should man up and quit your job. Come on Mark what is more important than the Reds? They need you!

      • Mark Moore

Don’t tempt me … never tempt me on a Monday.

    • Dennis Westrick

I hear you! Gotta get up early and go to work.

      • JB

One thing about Gutierrez is he doesnt lose control. They might get a couple of hits and score a run but he sets himself with that little shake and doesnt lose his head. Guy is a fighter.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Agreed. I’m beginning to believe that Gutierrez is a legit starting pitcher, as well.

  44. Indy Red Man

Cubs down 3 in the 8th. Lets Go!!!

  45. Dennis Westrick

3-4-5 due up for the Brewers in the bottom of the 6th! Be strong Vlad!

  46. VaRedsFan

Surprised Bell didn’t go Akiyama/Naquin for Aquino vs. a sidewinding righty

    • Indy Red Man

I would think he might keep AA in as a defensive replacement for Wink late in the game with a lead. Maybe? You don’t want to insult your AS LFer either

  47. Mark Moore

Shutting it down. Hope I wake up to a happy W tomorrow.

  48. Indy Red Man

I don’t like Hendrix or Hembree. It feels like they go 2-0, 2-1 on every hitter they face. Depressing? I think I’d rather go with Brach & Warren with Sims for the 9th if he’s still available? Maybe AG for 1-2 lefties again

  49. VaRedsFan

There are a lot of bad options down there in the pen. Hembre might by the worst right now….as he warms up

    • Indy Red Man

Hembree 5.68 with 6 hrs in 19 ip
      Hendrix 4.82 with 11 walks in 18.2

What about Phillip Diehl? Lefty in Lville with 1.69 era, 16 ip, 11 hits, 2 walks, 21 Ks
The H boys couldn’t walk 2 or less in 16 ip at any level

      • VaRedsFan

They had H&H before with Hughes and Hernandez.
One year good, next year terrible.

      • Indy Red Man

omg Hernandez. Felt bad for the guy. They kept running him out there and it was just beating after beating. Was that Bell? I can’t remember? Price or RIggleman? I don’t want to remember

  50. VaRedsFan

Wow that was a bad check swing call that went in our favor

  51. Indy Red Man

Vlad at 110 pitches. Nice call Mr Bell!! You guys wanted him to stretch guys…..well he has to now and he recognizes it! I think he’s a pretty decent manager myself!

    • oklared

Yes, he will get no credit when he makes a choice that works. It is all manager is not relevant then.

    • Melvin

If it makes you feel better I like that he left Guti in for 110 pitches. I also like that he didn’t double switch out Aquino. 🙂

      • TR

Could it be that it’s dawning on David Bell that less is more.

  52. Tom Mitsoff

That was one heck of a job by Gutierrez! This kid might be the real thing!

  53. JB

The kid is a fighter! Give me him every 5 days.

  54. Rex

    well down Guti

now it is time to take our old rowboat of a bulpen into the deep water and pray

  55. DaveCT

Wise and talented beyond his years. VladiG

  56. MBS

Nice comeback after 2 though innings to start the game! Adames was 3 for 3 against Guttierez, 5 days ago. Today he went 0 for 3, with 2 K’s.

  57. RedsMonk65

I’m impressed with Gutierrez. He seems to take an inning or two to settle down, but then finds a groove. Able to get out of trouble without losing his cool and while limiting any damage. I’m thinking he is a keeper.

  58. Dennis Westrick

Outstanding Job young man (Vlad)! Now we need the bullpen to finish the job! Cubs lost 5-2!

  59. RedsMonk65

Reds need to plate a few more here for the cushion the bullpen is likely to need.

    • RedsMonk65

      Thank you, Mr. Votto.

      6-2 Reds.

Could use a couple more, perhaps…

  60. VaRedsFan

Vottttooo!!! knew that would be a good matchup…finally getting a righty.

  61. Melvin

Not doing bad for a has been. lol 🙂 9 RBI in last four games.

  62. Indy Red Man

I will gladly eat crow with my Joey comments! He’s been raking! Stephenson is going to be good, but he’s not hammering balls like this!

  63. RedsMonk65

Jackie is a good defensive outfielder. 🙁

  64. Roger Garrett

Just want to say that Guti appears to be the real deal.He seems to get better as the game goes along. That is a sign of a pitcher with a big upside. The league will adjust but his stuff plays.

    • Indy Red Man

I think he’s got limited arm talent, but he just has the mindset of a veteran. He’ll throw a nice little breaking ball for a strike when he’s behind in the count. They can’t sit on anything. I’m thinking 3.75 ish 3rd-4th starter and nothing wrong with that

  65. Indy Red Man

SD getting shutout late in Denver….down 2-0. We could get within 3 and then we play them 4 times after this series. Could be a good time to play them. They’re not scoring that much

    • Rex

they have been looking bad lately

it is also our last west div road games of the RS

  66. RedsMonk65

When Hembree is on, he is ON. Wow.

Need to see more of that.

    • Indy Red Man

Told you I love that guy))))). He’s got the arm! Warren gets it up to 97 too. Like to see him next

      • JB

I must of read that comment wrong up above.

      • Indy Red Man

Yes someone took over my keyboard earlier)))

    • Dennis Westrick

      Unfortunately, Bell will decide that!

  67. VaRedsFan

Who was that guy wearing #55, striking out the side?

  68. Roger Garrett

Give him another and lets see.

  69. Melvin

Let him pitch another one. Ride the hot pitcher…especially with this bp.

    • Dennis Westrick

Yes, as a native of Kentucky, I say ride that horse until he drops (or walks someone)!

  70. Old-school

Foreign substance shut down in MLB coming tomorrow.

San diego and milwaukee pitching might be impacted

    • JB

Funny Bauer got rocked for 4 the other night against the Rangers. Some of these pitchers are going to suddenly look human.

    • RedsMonk65

This paragraph from Jeff Passan’s ESPN article caught my eye:

“While the sample is small, the leaguewide batting average since June 3 — when the first reports about the league’s crackdown surfaced — is .247, a substantial jump from the .236 to that point in the season. The leaguewide spin rate on fastballs is down substantively, too, a sign that already some pitchers have stopped using foreign substances altogether — or at least switched grip agents.”

  71. Roger Garrett

The pen has the power arms but you must throw strikes and quality strikes. Its the same winning formula for all teams but we have just walked way to many so far this season. If and when they turn that around we get better.Easier said of course but it is what it is.

  72. JB

Funny someone a couple of weeks ago said India was overrated and wouldnt amount to more than a 240 hitter. I must be missing something. The kid adjusts and improves.

  73. Roger Garrett

India is a player that I see being around for awhile at second.Guy just looks the part.Has some pop,has some speed and can defend.Young of course and he will make mistakes but all do.

    • Rex

he was a college legend and the pride of Fort Lauderdale…I was so happy they drafted him…and happy that he is looking like a pro

      • Indy Red Man

My sisters family just moved out of Coral Springs. Big $$
Rolls Royce all over the place. Don’t think I’ve ever seen one in Indiana
Niece’s boyfriends family has a yacht. Crazy $$

  74. DaveCT

This conversation re prospective changes to the game is hurting my head.

  75. Roger Garrett

I thought it would be a good time for India to go and he did.Smart play.

  76. Indy Red Man

Loving this team right now! Using their speed and spraying the ball all over. Naquin got robbed! He’s swinging it great and Joey is racking up rbis. India/Wink/Castellanos. Wow!

  77. JB

Bullpen keeps Rolling. “You Gotta Believe”

  78. VaRedsFan

Maybe bullpen innings are becoming contagious.
Dare I say AG for 1 more?

    • Roger Garrett

Why not but his confidence level made need another shot or two before you go another inning.Yesterday and today he looked like the guy we thought we had.

  79. Roger Garrett

Garrett threw strikes and got the top of the order in order.Like I said earlier they have the power arms as all teams do in the pen for the most part but you can’t hand out free passes late in games.Make the other team hit it to beat you and if they do tip your cap just don’t put men on ahead of the hit.Good job of scoring early and adding on in the 7th and hopefully we get em in the 9th and chalk up the win.

  80. RedsMonk65

    Stephenson-Votto-Geno come through! 8-2

  81. earmbrister

Who woulda thunk it! Eugenio comes thru with two big RBIs’

    • Rex

who would think the speedy Votto scores on that

      • earmbrister

Votto hustled to second also. He seems focused and hungry.

  82. Rex

ok it is save to pitch anyone now…even DooHomer

  83. Tom Mitsoff

With a six-run lead, go with someone like Warren so you hopefully don’t even have to get Sims up.

      • Roger Garrett

Good one.Would love to try and figure that out a bunch of times the rest of the season.

    • Melvin

Can’t believe DB didn’t double switch him out. 🙂

  84. Roger Garrett

Good things happen when you just put it in play.Really impressed with the 6 walks also.

  85. earmbrister

Hoby Milner’s 1.42 ERA just became ugly. Nice to put a little doubt into a tired Brewers team.

  86. Roger Garrett

Its one game for sure but the offense jumped out early and piled it on late. Can’t say enough about Guti going six innings.Team effort tonight.

    • Tom Mitsoff

I’d like to see a lot more of him.

  87. RedsMonk65

That may have been the best all-around game the Reds have played this year. Hope they can keep it going. 11-3 in their last 14 games.

  88. Roger Garrett

Pen perfect over 3 innings with 6 punchouts.WOW

  89. BatsLeftThrowsRight

What do you think about a six man rotation when Gray comes back? I think it would be be feasible and even prudent at least until the all star break.

    • Melvin

Maybe if our starters can go 6 or 7 innings.

  90. Tim

Last 2 weeks have been fantastic. Best lineup in baseball and the pen is starting to get it together. Also looks like a couple of nice rookie SPs. Vitto is back with a vengeance and AA blasts one in his return. I believe the rest of the NL must be taking note.

  91. west larry

Castillo starts tomorrow. Another bad outing and he needs to go to the bullpen.

  92. Melvin

Great job Geno! Best AB of the year. 🙂

  93. Melvin

Good thing we pinch ran for Votto there. lol Oh well. Let’s win.

  94. Melvin

Casty and his defense has gotten a lot better but that was a VERY BAD play.

  95. Melvin

AG coming in. Blood pressure going up. 🙂
