The Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies will finish up their 3-game set this afternoon at Great American Ball Park. The Reds are coming off of two blowout wins and hoping to sweep the series and get above the .500 mark. First pitch is set for 1:10pm ET.

Starting Pitchers

Tony Santillan

The Reds will be sending Tony Santillan to the mound for his Major League debut in this one. He’s been dominant in Triple-A this season through six starts. He last started on Friday June 4th, so it’s been quite a while since the 24-year-old was on the mound. With Louisville he posted a 2.51 ERA in 32.1 innings, allowed 23 hits – 5 homers – and walked 12 to go along with 45 strikeouts.

As we noted in the write up yesterday, Santillan did show some big splits in a small sample size this year against lefties and righties. He’s dominated right-handed hitters, holding them to a .147/.205/.221 line this year. Lefties have struck out 35% of the time against him, but have also hit .255/.345/.608 against him over 58 plate appearances.

From a stuff standpoint he’ll throw a mid-90’s fastball that can touch the upper 90’s, a slider in the mid-to-upper 80’s, as well as a change up that works in the mid-to-upper 80’s.

Antonio Senzatela

Through 12 starts this season Antonio Senzatela has been a league average starter, posting a 4.62 ERA – but when you factor in the whole Coors factor that’s good for a 99 ERA+. He doesn’t walk many batters, but he also has one of the lowest strikeout rates in the league as he’s fanned just 42 batters in 64.1 innings. He keeps the ball on the ground and that’s helped him keep the runs allowed in a solid place. Last month he allowed just one run over 7.0 innings against Cincinnati.

This year he’s shown some reverse splits. Righties have hit .292/.354/.469 against him this year. Lefties aren’t doing much worse, but have had a bit less power as they’ve hit .290/.340/.428. He has shown very big home/road splits, though. In four road starts he’s allowed 13 earned runs in 17.1 innings.

News and Notes

Aristides Aquino has been activated

Prior to the game today the Reds activated Aristides Aquino from the injured list. He’ll take the spot of Mark Payton, who was optioned to Triple-A. Nick Senzel was also moved from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.

Hunter Greene promoted to Triple-A Louisville

The Cincinnati Reds have promoted Hunter Greene to Triple-A Louisville. The Reds top prospect was dominant in his five weeks to begin the year with Double-A Chattanooga and will now be making his next start with the Bats and getting one step closer to the big leagues.

Great news for Hunter Greene. That kid has handled the weight of expectations like a pro at such a young age. Glad he plays for my favorite team. Great numbers for AA in his rehab the strikeout numbers are really encouraging. He has a great future ahead of him. Good luck today team. Thanks for playing hard everyday and providing so much joy for everyone.

    • RojoB

      Yes great news!

Time to see what he’s got at the next level up

  2. Indy Red Man

Any news on why Lodolo only went 3.1 last night? 7Ks out of 10 outs ain’t half bad!

  3. Old-school

It would be interesting to know what Greene’s inning limits are this year and how many starts the Reds plan- assuming no hiccups.
He’s started 7 games and thrown 41 innings. He’s 2 years out from TJ.

Strasburg had the infamous 160 IP limited in 2012 after his 2010 late season TJ. The Nats shut him down in the middle of a playoff run.

Antone threw about 150 innings the 2nd year after his TJ which was the same time of year roughly as HG- early spring.

Not inconceivable HG could be pitching at GABP by late July. Whether its to help with a playoff run or to finish the season in preparation for 2022- all very encouraging.

  4. MBS

Excited to see how Greene pitches to the AAA batters. I think the only real test will be at the MLB level. It should be exciting nonetheless.

  5. Dennis Westrick

Tony Santillan needs to be The Sand Man today and put the Rockies batters to sleep! My only concern is Santillan’s walk rate! About 3 walks per game!

  6. Jon

So once again, where is Akiyama? Is he going to be trade bait come July (since obviously the Reds have no significant use for him)?

    • Brian Rutherford

Who should he replace? Naquin had 3 hits yesterday. What would you tell Naquin he has to do better to keep his place?

  7. Redsfan4life

The still no Shogo argument is silly. Naquin has been great he has driven in 40. Winker and Castellanos are the leaders of this team. Aquino will now be Naquin’s platoon partner in CF. Shogo got hurt and Naquin took his job and ran with it. Simple as that.

    • Jon

…which is why I hope the Reds are actively seeking a trade for him. No use in paying him $7 million a year to sit in the dugout.

  8. Melvin

AA is back! 🙂 Can’t take Naquin out right now even though I wouldn’t have put it past DB. LOL Maybe The Punisher can play SS. haha Farmer is not doing bad. Don’t mean to put him down.

  9. Optimist

Santillan throwing strikes. Good for him.

    • Mark Moore

Several of which aren’t called strikes based on what I’m seeing …

  10. Mark Moore

Hard hit stuff for no results … keep it up and we’ll get crooked numbers. Our top three really look good to me.

  11. Mark Moore

Tony getting squeezed just a little bit?

    • MBS

Just what i was going to say, forcing him deeper into the zone

      • Mark Moore

I’m beyond tired and frustrated with the flex-o-zone stuff

    • Dennis Westrick

Just like the NBA! Tough calls for the Rookies, average calls against the everyday players and then the non-calls for the elite players!

  12. MBS

Hopefully Santillan starts getting the calls 2nd time through the lineup. He finally got a boarder line strike against Tapia.

    • Mark Moore

Right – and it was a tad lower than a missed call a few batters earlier.

  13. Mark Moore

Yeah, not sure how you sit Naquin most of the time for somebody else.

    • MBS

You don’t, Naquin bat is great. If we didn’t have Wink and Castellanos, we’d all be gushing over Naquin.

  14. JB

Shogo might want to learn how to hit right handed. He isnt even in the same league as Naquin right now.

  15. Mark Moore

    Run, Joey, run!

Not getting to 2B anyway. Got the RBI which was key.

  16. Mark Moore

    170 and rising!!!

Keep or trade, his stock is definitely rising again.

  17. Dennis Westrick

No other team in MLB would bat a .170 hitter 6th in the batting order!

    • MBS

Not true, most teams would, if he was one of the best hitters the team has. Mets have Linder at .214 in the 2 hole. Teams stay with their best hitters, and try to get them out of their slumps.

    • oklared

YOU SHOULD CHECK MILWAUKEES LINE UP SOME NIGHTS

  18. Dennis Westrick

Then, of course, Suarez hits a 2-run Homer! I’ll shut up for now! Love those crooked numbers! Now maybe Santillan will relax and get us through 6 innings!

  19. Mark A Verticchio

The Reds Need to put together a package for Story asap. The Cardinals gave little for Aranado I am sure they can match that.

    • MBS

I’d rather put my money and trade chips for bullpen help.

    • Brian Rutherford

The radio presenters have spoken about how obvious his shoulder injury is. I would love to see a trade for him but wouldn’t that be taking a big risk at this point?

    • Mark Moore

Personally, I’m not convinced that’s the way to go. He’s a rental and unless there is someway to lock him up, I doubt it works beyond being a rental.

      • Melvin

Jose B is a keeper for a lot less money unless we just want him as a rental for the post season.

      • MBS

I agree, Barrero is the only plan the Reds have at SS. This offseason was frustrating watching all those SS sign elsewhere. They are not going to pay for a SS.

    • LDS

Suarez for Story benefits both teams – if Castellini would fork over the money. Move Suarez on the upswing. I’m skeptical that’ll he’ll hit .200 this year and completely doubtful that he or Votto can top .250 at season end.

  20. Indy Red Man

We’re killing the ball, but I look at these pitches and these Rockie pitchers are horrible. Almost everything is belt high or higher and near the middle of the plate. Hope they can bottle some of it up for Milwaukee.

    • Mark Moore

A lot of grapefruits floating up there for sure … let’s just keep making them pay. Better than batting practice.

  21. Brian Rutherford

The silence regarding the need for JV to retire is deafening. So happy to see his hard work paying off. He had been hitting the ball hard and not getting paid off. The hits are finally falling in.

As tough as it has been for Geno, the team never gave up and he never quit on himself. It makes it that much sweeter as he turns it around.

It must be nice playing for a manager who allows you to hit your way out of a slump.

    • Mark Moore

Since coming back, he’s only helped his own cause. Maybe a lighter grip (like we’re hearing about) is helping.

    • Old-school

It might be Votto accepting hes not the 2017 version of himself. He admitted that yesterday. But, he has the greatest plate discipline Ive ever seen and if he simply hits for avg gets on base and takes advantage of gabp- no reason he cant be a .275/.350/ .425/ .775 player

  22. Mark Moore

And another hit that would have been a DP without the shift …

  23. J

Maybe Suarez should slice another finger or two? Just a thought.

    • Mark Moore

      YIKES!!!!

But the results are hard to argue with … at least lately.

      • Melvin

I’m more impressed with his line drive through the right side yesterday than the HR today.

  24. Mark Moore

Lotta break on that one … a whole lotta break

  25. Mark Moore

That free pass isn’t on the HP umpire … c’mon Tony!

  26. MBS

Putting himself into a lot of bad situations. Attack this batter

    • Mark Moore

Yeah … the away, away, away garbage pitches aren’t helping.

  27. Mark Moore

Showing up the ump a little Mr. Cron? Rarely works out.

  28. Indy Red Man

5-0 count on Cron. The extra strike zone helped us that time. Robo zone please!!!

    • Dennis Westrick

Tony’s playing with fire with the walks! Plus, running up his pitch count! Really would like to see home go 6 innings!

      • Mark Moore

Agreed. I’m thinking 5 is the limit today unless something changes drastically in the next two frames.

      • MBS

Right, hopefully he lets his defense help him in the 4th

      • Mark Moore

And to your point yesterday, we don’t need another arsonist …

      • MBS

The 4th really helped! If he can follow up with a solid 5th, the 6th should be against the bottom of the Rockies lineup. Let’s go Tony!

  29. VaRedsFan

Dig deep moment for Santillan, and he delivers!

    • Mark Moore

I’ll take it. He got in Cron’s head just a tiny bit with that strike call (which I saw as a strike anyway).

  30. Mark Moore

HBP and a doubles machine … Batman and Superman indeed. Long live “the other guys”.

    Up to you JV.

    • Mark Moore

      My bad – Naquin.

And I like the stop sign there.

  31. Melvin

I like Santi AND Guti. They both remind me a little of Jose Rijo.

    • MBS

I’ll take to Rijo’s. We could sweep the World Series with just 2 pitchers!

      • Mark Moore

All of us would take that …

And I think it’s the platform. A “like” button would also be nice.

  32. JB

Umpire says swing the bat boys. We ain’t walking today.

    • Mark Moore

Except when Tony is pitching …

  33. Mark Moore

And a generous strike leads to another wild swing by a player. It has to stop for everybody’s sake.

  34. Mark Moore

UGH!!! Little things that didn’t go well that inning.

  35. Mark Moore

Larkin with a teachable moment for Sadak …

    • MBS

I actually really like listing to Larkin. I think he gives a nice insight from a batters perspective. We usually hear only from pitchers, or non players.

      • Mark Moore

Most of his stuff is good for me as well. The “old/new” routine is a little stale, but that’s who he is.

Not sold on Sadak just yet … still trying a little too hard.

  36. Melvin

Watching Winker and Castellanos hit together this year is special. It hasn’t been this much fun watching the top of the order hit for the Reds since ’76 when we had three out of the top five hitters in the NL. Griffey .336 Rose .323 Morgan .320

    • Mark Moore

      +5000

That was a long time ago and truly a joy to watch (when I could catch them on TV as opposed to seeing box scores the next evening).

      • Melvin

Yeah. I was very young but still remember a little. Of course didn’t realize at the time the special thing I was seeing. We need to enjoy and remember Joey Votto.

    • JB

Felt sorry for pitchers that year. Even Geronimo hit over 300.

      • Melvin

        Yeah. Besides the top three:

        Geronimo .307
        Foster .306
        Concepcion .281
        Perez .260
        Bench. 234

Bench had an off year but became the World Series MVP lol

    • LDS

That team was 39-23 at this point though. The entire lineup had an OPS+ above 100 as did 4 of the guys on the bench. And Sparky used utility players, e.g., Youngblood as utility players not starters. And, of course, they had Borbon, McEnaney, and Eastwick.

  37. Mark Moore

Really need to turn the lineup over here. At least it feels that way to me.

    • Mark Moore

Or just extend it … I’m good with that as well

  38. MBS

Tony moves at a quick pace. I wonder if that’s nerves or just his normal routine.

    • Mark Moore

If it is, I certainly like it. I’d prefer to see more of that.

  39. Mark Moore

    Is that Trevor’s sore shoulder?

  40. Mark Moore

Get the outs, let it pour for the rest of the day. We’ll take a short game and a win to close out the series. None of the arsonists in the BP needed.

  41. MBS

High heat! Throwing in! Quick pace! Ability to get himself out of jams! Lots to like, maybe next start he’ll feel more comfortable, and create less jams to get out of.

    • Mark Moore

Agreed. Jams lead to more pitches which lead to more jams. Have to figure that part out to succeed.

  42. Mark Moore

Is it a strike or a ball … not even the umpire knows for sure … #robozonenowplease

  43. Mark Moore

Filthy breaking ball there, Tony. Debbie likes …

  44. Mark Moore

    Nibbling, nibbling, nibbling …

      • Mark Moore

This is his last batter regardless

      • MBS

Tough inning. Let’s hope Hendrix can pick him up

    • Mark Moore

Among the reasons was the constant nibbling. This is not a good Rockies team at the plate for the most part. You can’t let them off the hook that way.

    • MBS

Yep, too much off time? Too excited? I’m not sure, but he was gassed, and pressing.

      • JB

Hot day and his first start. I dont know about you but I would have been nervous. Gave his team a chance and the lead. Nice job.

  45. Dennis Westrick

Two HBP and 4 walks! Not good!

  46. Mark Moore

Not a bad start, Tony. But you lost your chance to get a W and perhaps could get hung with the L.

Love the crowd support. But the crowd wasn’t pitching just then.

Need an out and then let it pour.

  47. Mark Moore

Bases loaded in a steady rain … wouldn’t wish that on anybody.

  48. Dennis Westrick

Note to Hendrix! Just throw stikes!

    • Mark Moore

Say it louder, Dennis. He’s not listening …

      • LDS

Sloppy, but he got it in the end. I’d say Santillian at least got an education.

  49. Mark Moore

Finally … and it was a gift from the Rocks.

Now let it pour the rest of the day, please.

    • Mark Moore

NUTS!! Radar says it won’t last very long.

  50. VaRedsFan

Caught a break with him swinging at ball 4…I’ll take it.

  51. Dennis Westrick

Too bad for Santillan! Just one batter short of qualifying for a win assuming we hang on to win! Hopefully there’s a gas shortage in Cincy and none available to carry to the mound!

    • Mark Moore

They’ll find alternative fuel … you know they will.

      • Dennis Westrick

If they bring wind turbines just make sure they are blowing towards home plate!

  52. Mark Moore

Got to do a little better job reading those, Mr. India. That was never a strike at any point in time.

  53. Dennis Westrick

Time to tack on some runs against this Rockies starting pitcher!

    • Mark Moore

      Will that Winky-Double help, Dennis?

      • Dennis Westrick

It’s a start! Now let’s get him home please!

  54. Dennis Westrick

And we’re back to the pitcher an inning approach by Bell

    • Roger Garrett

Yeah and I just never have liked it but a lot of managers do it.Lets hope it works for us today. We have counted on Hendrix and he did go 2 innings on Friday so maybe thats why.Enough Go Reds.

  55. Gpod

Naquin needs to stop swinging at pitches that are not close to being a strike

    • J

I was about to say the same thing. He’s walked once in the last 2+ weeks, and probably could have walked at least 6 or 7 times if he were willing to take pitches a foot out of the zone.

      • Mark Moore

Less discipline than India and he definitely should know better.

  56. VaRedsFan

4 innings of bullpen….let the nail biting begin.
    Please keep Doolittle away.

    • Tom Mitsoff

There are a bunch of arms down there, and I think you’ll see them all if necessary. The objective today, IMO, is to win without having to have Sims go two innings to close. You want him ready for Milwaukee.

      • Melvin

At this point especially with TJA out, when they’re pitching well let them go as long as they can in my view.

    • Mark Moore

Perhaps he’s unavailable because he pitched yesterday? Never know with Tinker’s “favorites” though.

  57. Mark Moore

I’m not opposed to pitching around Daza that way … though now Tinker is in full swing.

  58. Tom Mitsoff

Interesting that Garrett is being called upon in a “high-leverage” situation.

  59. Melvin

Brach seems to be throwing well. One walk and here comes AG. Ooooh Boy. Hope it works.

  60. Dennis Westrick

Not smart Brach! Walk Daza to get to Blackmon! And now we have Mr. Excitement, aka AG!

  61. Mark Moore

Think about how many changes we’d see without the 3-batter minimum rule the way Tinker thinks and manages … anybody want to hazard an over/under guess per game?

  62. Mark Moore

OK, I’ll be (among) the first to say that worked well.

    • earmbrister

Anybody else nervous with Amir coming in?

No worries. This bullpen is fire.

      • Mark Moore

Always … though that performance was what we all hoped for and expected from the beginning.

  63. Dennis Westrick

I can breathe again for now! Nice job AG!

    • Mark Moore

He was efficient and effective with Blackmon. I’ll give him that much.

  64. Mark Moore

Who do we see to start the 7th? More important – will said pitcher have a full can of fuel at his disposal?

  65. Dennis Westrick

Let’s see if Bell rolls the dice and uses AG to start the 7th

  66. Roger Garrett

Its obvious the offense is done for today so the pen will have to get it done.It appears its Sims for the 8th and 9th after using 3 pitchers to get 4 outs.Lets see what happens.I am all in so Go Reds.

    • Mark Moore

Not sure I trust Sims for two full innings, especially if we don’t put up a couple more crooked numbers.

  67. Mark Moore

Not sure who might win the Story Sweepstakes …

    OUCH!! That hurts.

  68. earmbrister

Trevor Sotry is 0-3 with 3 K’s. And to think that some Reds’ fans wanted us to swing a deal for this “bum”. Lol

    • Mark Moore

I checked with Deb … we are in agreement. I’m not in the camp that says go get him as a rental.

      • earmbrister

It would depend on the cost. It’s not like we are one player away. We could use about 4 bullpen arms as well.

  69. LDS

I’m pretty sure AG could have managed that shot. Offense needs to wake up and get some more.

  70. Dennis Westrick

The Reds relief pitchers are like an anorexic at a buffet. Nibble, nibble, nibble!

    • Mark Moore

Dennis you have GOT to stop … these are all too good!

Anorexic Arsonists at a Gas & Dynamite Buffet

      • Mark Moore

All of them with a 2-pack-a-day habit and plenty of matches.

  71. Melvin

Keep on switching them out and you’ll find one that’s not pitching well just about guaranteed especially with this bullpen.

  72. Roger Garrett

I am still all in but our pen is what it is and if you keep changing guys out the guy that doesn’t have it will show up.

  73. Mark Moore

Is Cron really that good … I mean really?

    • earmbrister

He’s better than Nunez. The anorexic nibbling worked out ok.

  74. Dennis Westrick

And of course the obligatory walk!

    • Mark Moore

And pizza it is … now Sadak can stop obsessing about it.

  75. earmbrister

Farmer is going to go yard here and keep the Story rumors at bay.

    • Melvin

Have to say Story probably would love to play for another team besides the Rocks at this point and would most likely play much better just because of that fact alone.

  76. centerfield

Leo Welsh nails God Bless America!

  77. Roger Garrett

Well talk about putting all your eggs in one basket then Bell just did it.Have no clue what we do if Sims struggles or worse yet we go to extra innings.Guess we will see.Got to admire him though. He scripted this game out way back in the 5th.If we ever needed to add on its right now.

    • Mark Moore

Yep. Pretty much nowhere to hide now, though Sims isn’t throwing at the moment.

  78. Mark Moore

Kind of surprised Charlie didn’t catch that … looked like it turned him around more than a little.

    Nice shot by Shogo!

    • RojoB

Agreed. In sure Farmer had to wait up and that why he didn’t score there.

      Here we go, Reds!

  79. VaRedsFan

Shogo with a rare pull knock…he pulled one down the line a few days ago….keep it up!!

  80. Mark Moore

Will the real Jonathan India please stand up … and get on base …

  81. Mark Moore

I think we’ll ALL take that result. Now time for a Blastellanos.

  82. VaRedsFan

Put it in play…good things happen.
    Way to go Wink!

  83. Mark Moore

Time for a little redemption for Naquin. That puts us up a 4-spot.

And no, John, a slam still ties it. You have to be 5 up to be in “safe haven” range.

  84. Tom Mitsoff

Up by four now — if I’m Bell, I bring in someone like Warren instead of Sims. Do everything you can to save Sims for Milwaukee.

    • Roger Garrett

Yes Tom for sure and if Warren gets em in the 8th try him out in the 9th.Sims for 2 innings now is not the right move at all.

    • Mark Moore

Completely agree. But can Tinker help himself? I mean, if the “script” says Sims he has to follow it, doesn’t it? Those are the rules, after all …

    • Melvin

I was thinking why is Sims pitching right now.

  85. Mark Moore

Breathing a little easier now … anyone else?

    • Dennis Westrick

Have my oxygen tank next to me with the valve off but within easy reach!

  86. Roger Garrett

He brought Sims in anyway.Guess maybe he warmed up so here we go.Maybe just for the 8th.Do we play tomorrow?

  87. Tom Mitsoff

Maybe …. 😉 Bell is thinking to have Sims pitch one inning against the top of the Rockies batting order, and then finish with someone else.

Maybe … 7 pitches isn’t too bad in the end.

      • Roger Garrett

Agreed Mark.Meant to ask earlier don’t you line in the capital city of the great state of North Carolina?I am down here in Sanford.

      • Mark Moore

I’m the next county North of Wake (Franklin). Closest burg is Wake Forest for us. Downtown Raleigh is about 20 miles or so.

      • Tom Mitsoff

Agreed. I sure would hate to need Sims in a tight spot tomorrow night, but he’s unavailable because he went two innings in a not-so-tight-spot today.

      • Tom Mitsoff

I just heard John Sadak say that it’s Blackmon, Story and McMahon in the ninth. Stick with Sims.

      • Melvin

Yeah I know. He pretty much has to use him now. Has to make sure to win this game. Could have held him back and maybe not had to use him at all.

  88. JB

Come on Sadak take it a little further on that bullpen. They have gone 8 1/3 innings with 4 hits, 2 runs , 3 walks and 14 Ks in the series. Yeah it’s the Rockies but it’s the same team that touched Mahle and Miley for 7 runs total. As much as we RIP them, I’ll be the first to congratulate them on a nice series with an inning still to go.

    • Mark Moore

      He’s on a 1-year contract, isn’t he? (Please)

      • Mark Moore

They did what was needed this weekend. That’s important.

  89. Indy Red Man

A sweep felt almost mandatory with the Brewers/Cubs both rolling! Lauer going tomorrow for Milw so might see the Punisher in CF?

    • Melvin

I’d be good with that :)…… although Naquin is the CF right now. He’s earned it IMO.

      • RojoB

Well- at least if Bell wants to do the right left matchup he’ll have Aquino instead of going to Heineman lol

      • Melvin

Yep…comforting. 🙂 Don’t forget Heineman is STILL on the roster. lol Six outfielders smh

  90. VaRedsFan

That’s the best Sims has looked all year. Good job fellas!

    • Mark Moore

He did look focused. Under 20 pitches for 2 innings. Good command.

  91. RedsMonk65

    Sweep!

And finally above .500. Keep the motor runnin’ — on to Milwaukee!

  92. Melvin

Cool. We held serve and did well. Good series for the most part.

  93. TR

And this one, plus the series, is in the book.
