The Cincinnati Reds wrap up a 4-game series this afternoon with the St. Louis Cardinals and they are going for the sweep. Yesterday the Reds sealed their first 4-game series win in St. Louis since I was 6-years-old (which was in 1990!) – no, that’s not a depressing fact at all. First pitch is all set for 2:15pm ET.

Starting Lineups

Cincinnati Reds

St. Louis Cardinals

Jonathan India – 2B Tommy Edman – 2B
Jesse Winker – LF Dylan Carlson – CF
Nick Castellanos – RF Paul Goldschmidt – 1B
Tyler Stephenson – 1B Nolan Arenado – 3B
Tyler Naquin – CF Tyler O’Neill – LF
Eugenio Suárez – 3B Edmundo Sosa – SS
Tucker Barnhart – C José Rondón – RF
Mike Freeman – SS Andrew Knizner – C
Wade Miley – SP John Gant – SP

Starting Pitchers

Wade Miley

After a brutal game in Colorado on May 14th, Wade Miley has rebounded well by allowing just two earned runs in 10.2 innings in his last two starts. He’s posted a 3.26 ERA this year in nine games and allowed more than two earned runs in just two of those games.

Miley has found success against both lefties and righties this season. Right-handed hitters have had 168 plate appearances against him this year and are hitting just .226/.281/.361. Lefties rarely get the chance to face Miley, but in the 38 plate appearances they have had against him this year the results haven’t been good for them – they’ve hit just .194/.237/.194 against him.

John Gant

From an ERA standpoint John Gant has been quite good this year. He’s starting for the first time since 2018 after spending the last few seasons in the bullpen. His ERA sits at 1.60 through 10 starts, but he leads the league in walks with 34 and he has just 39 strikeouts in 50.2 innings. Where he’s been successful is keeping the ball in the ballpark – he’s given up just one homer this year. While he has some groundball tendencies, his 48.6% ground ball rate isn’t exactly elite.

Left-handed hitters are hitting just .183/.350/.244 against him. They walk a ton – 20 of them in just 104 plate appearances – but they aren’t finding any hits against him. Right-handed hitters are hitting .272/.361/.320 against him. More hits, plenty of walks, but no power at all to speak of. He’s walked the high-wire all season. Perhaps today is that day he finds that to be a problem.

News and Notes

Joey Votto Still Bangs

Last night in Louisville Joey Votto played in the field for the first time on his rehab assignment. He also went 3-4 with a single, double, and a triple – as well as a funny moment to begin the bottom of the 1st, but you’ll have to click the link to see the video on that one.

Positioning more than the shift is taking away hits

Baseball Prospectus has up a new article this week (BP subscription required) showing just how much better defenses are today than even a handful of years ago at turning balls in play into outs. While some of that is related to more shifting, more of it is actually due to the fact that everyone is playing significantly deeper on the infield which allows them to get to balls they never would have before and still turn them into outs because everyone is also throwing harder (as fielders).

Yowtsy I guess I’m getting old Doug, I was 5 when the Reds lost to Brooks Robinson and the Orioles in the 1970 World Series and 10 when the Reds beat the Red Sox in 1975 and 25 when the Reds swept the A’s in 1990

    • Doug Gray

We’re all getting older every day. It sucks.

    • Dennis Westrick

Got that beat! I was 9 when the Reds lost the 1961 World Series to the NY Yankees!

      • LDS

In 1961, 6 and don’t really remember it. 1970, my high school had TVs set up to watch it. Brooks was a vacuum cleaner. In 1975, at college, the guy in the dorm room next to mine was from Cincinnati and had color TV, which he threw out the window, from the 3rd floor. He was rather flush and had a new color TV for game 7.

      • Dewey Roberts

Well, I was 10 when that series was played.

  2. Bred

Day off tomorrow for the Reds. I wonder if we will see our 1.5 big league relievers today after brief stents yesterday. Antone is a beast, but can he throw over 90 innings this year and still have an shoulder and arm next year. Dusty over used Prior and blew out his shoulder. Hope Bell is better than that. Big W today. Go Reds!

  3. ChrisInVenice

I thought I read that Bell was going to pencil in his “mail it in lineup” today.

  4. ClevelandRedsFan

Lots of walks, and not a lot of homeruns. Sounds like the day to be patient at the plate instead of trying to ambush the first pitch.

We will see if Reds hitters can adjust and if they have a good game plan.

  5. Sliotar

Was there ever a time the Reds swept a 4-game series in the Heart of Mordor?

Kick them while they are down and the Devil Magic appears to be (temporarily) waning.

    Go Redlegs.

    • Rex

I think STL is in bad shape all around, it is time to twist the knife.

      • Denny Wright

My feelings exactly, but we have Bell daydreaming and forgot to get guys up during the Feliz Fiasco and then continued to daydream. Front office needs to schedule a meeting with “the Skipper”

  6. Vada

Is there any way that Jim Day be banned from game time comments. He is so boring when he speaks. Restrict his activity to pre and post game interviews.

    • Redsfan4life

3 straight wins in STL and this is your comment? Day doesn’t even speak that much during games.

      • Jeff in TN

LOL! This is what we are relegated to during a winning streak. A great one considering its against the Cardinals!

  7. Klugo

I think when most people say “shift” they are clumping ”positioning” in there with it. Well, at least , I have been.

I would like our chances a little better today with Miley if not for Goldschmit and Arenado seemingly heating up a little and probably excited to see a lefty on the mound today. Miley will compete his butt off though. We know that.
    Play Bal!!

    • Mark Moore

Given yesterday Arenado seemed to be able to hit ANYTHING inside the batters boxes.

  8. RedsMonk65

Captain Jack and then Da Wink! 2-0 Reds.

But it is beginning to rain ….

    • Mark Moore

That’s more than “beginning” out there … Glad we scored first. Could be a long wait to play the bottom of the 1st.

  9. Mark Moore

So the rain was brief but intense? And Miley won’t have to deal with it?

Got to love that from the baseball gods – for once.

RISP with 1-out feels a little different today than before this series.

  10. Mark Moore

    NUTS!!!

    2x TOOTBLAN like Cowboy said.

    • RedsMonk65

Yeah, I was hoping Geno would put the game out of reach before Miley took the mound.

Oh well, still encouraged by how that inning went, Geno’s at-bat aside. Always good to get ahead early rather than constantly clawing from behind.

      • Redsfan4life

I was hoping for a 4-0 or 5-0 lead as well. But no way would that have put the game out of reach in the first.

  11. RedsMonk65

Sunday afternoon nappy-poo beginning to approach, methinks.

If I doze off, hope to awake with us comfortably ahead ….

    • Mark Moore

Pleasant dreams Monk … we’ll keep you posted.

  12. ClevelandRedsFan

Ridiculous. Reds wasted a golden opportunity to put up a crooked number.

  13. Mark Moore

Miley has an earlier flight than everybody else 🙂

  14. DHud

How can a team be chronically this bad at base running

It’s like there is zero going on between the ears ever and when on the base paths

    • Mark Moore

Doubley so for Naquin IMO. He saw what was going on in front of him. I’ll hang at least part of TySteve on House.

      • DHud

It takes 3 seconds to say “3B is playing back – hit hard freeze and see it through; soft contact go”

        That’s little league

  15. Mark Moore

Valiant effort by Freeman. 2021 will always make us wonder what might have happened if we scored a legit SS in the off season.

  16. B-town fan

But he did hit that 2 run homer yesterday

  17. Mark Moore

Glad we got that whole no-hitter thing out of the way … 🙂

  18. Mark Moore

One takeaway for me in the T1st mess … we let Gant off the hook with only about 20 pitches. Really could have pressed that closer to 30 and then who knows?

    • jazzmanbbfan

Apparently the hook reappeared in the 2nd inning.

  19. ClevelandRedsFan

Reds showing some patience at the plate. I like it. Work that count, get guys on and get to the pen early.

    • VaRedsFan

I think they’d rather face Gant

  20. Mark Moore

The kid is a freaking HBP magnet.

  21. Mark Moore

Well THAT ought to put a dent in Gant’s day …

Way to go Wink!! Maybe he saw the card Gant referenced?

  22. VaRedsFan

    Wink going for HR cycle???
    2/3s there

    • Mark Moore

Jessie has a picture of Scooter in his locker today … just saying.

  23. ClevelandRedsFan

Jesse Winker just got himself a brand new condo, rent free: inside Gant’s head.

    • Rex Aultman

That should get Gant’s mind off of Scooter

    • Mark Moore

Wink’s living free in a LOT of heads lately. And India is looking at a place right next door.

  24. centerfield

I think Tucker gave Winker location by walking back toward 2nd a little bit.

  25. Old-school

Nick castellano and jesse Winker are like peas and carrots.

Reds got keep that righty/lefty combo together.

    Co-MVP’s.

    • Mark Moore

Oh yea. And India/Stephenson up for co-rookie awards.

      Life is good this weekend.

  26. LDS

Sure is nice to have India on base ahead of Winker & Castellanos. Hope Bell sticks with that top of the order.

    • Mark Moore

      Please, please, please, PLEASE!!!!!?????!!!

  27. Melvin

Even with all the injuries, the Reds still have the ability, for the most part, to put a pretty good starting lineup on the field save SS.

  28. RojoB

Wonder if Grant is another hurler who is missing his foreign substances? Control problems, getting rocked early. Not his MO this season so far

    • Mark Moore

Possibly … 50 pitches with nobody out in the 3rd. They probably can’t pull him just yet, but it’s getting close. And you are correct, Rojo. This is NOT the usual Gant line.

  29. Gonzo Reds

Calling it right now… one more Red gets hit… benches empty…

    • Rex

time to hide Nick…if he smiles he is outta here

    • Mark Moore

You setting an over/under inning with that Gonzo?

Put me down for the 4th at this rate. And it won’t be by Gant.

      • Gonzo Reds

Grant is the sacrificial lamb so he’ll be back out there in the 4th. Casto hits third and was frustrated with the last strike three call so already worked up…

    • RojoB

A sweep hurts then so much more than clearing the beaches though. Will St Yadi call for the Code Red today from his seat on the bench?

If Winker gets hit I think it will go down though

      • Mark Moore

Quite possibly. And that would mean Castellanos is very near in the on-deck circle.

  30. Mark Moore

Too bad Geno wasn’t able to move up before that fly ball.

  31. Mark Moore

Tight hammy for Naquin … those aren’t good things.

    • RojoB

Unless Shogo can heat up now. “Next man up!” Lol

      • Mark Moore

True. At least you get a good glove in Shogo. And more AB’s will mean he’ll dial it in a bit.

  32. Indy Red Man

Bell’s main priority now should be going over which pitcher will plant one in a Cards ribcage. 8 hbp in one series with no retaliation? No….absolutely not. Blandino put on IL too.

    Payback time!!

    • Indy Red Man

Miley doesn’t throw hard enough. Garrett would probably hit them in the head.

      Decisions decisions?

  33. Dennis Westrick

Now Wade can just pitch to contact and let his defense do the work!

    • Mark Moore

They are going to get impatient. Wade just needs to keep up what he’s doing and keep them off balance.

  34. Mark Moore

Somebody might want to think about waking up Monk from his afternoon nap …

  35. Old-school

Love to see Miley just pound the zone here and send a message to the Cards the Reds are hitting the reset button on assumptions about the NL central this season.

Solid baseball of late with an off day tomorrow. Hopefully Miley can let Antone and Sims get 2 much needed days off and hopefully get Wink and Casty out of the game by the 6 th inning.

    • Mark Moore

I’m thinking the only near certain thing about the NL Central is that only one team comes out of it. You either win or you watch October on TV.

      • Tom Mitsoff

99.9 percent that you are correct.

      • Dennis Westrick

My biggest fear is that if Miley can’t go a full nine we will see AG!

  36. Indy Red Man

Hopefully its nothing too serious with Naquin. He’s been almost as injury plagued as Senzel during his career. They could get by with Shogo, but Naquin has been blasting the ball….especially in gabp!

    • Mark Moore

Agreed. Hoping it was a precautionary move and he can rest a couple of days.

  37. Mark Moore

Hard hit again by JI. But that’s OK. Wink needs a solo HR for his cycle anyway. This is as good a time as any.

  38. Old-school

Nick C needs a hit or he’s playing all 9

  39. Mark Moore

Gant wants no part of Wink’s wheelhouse.

    • Gonzo Reds

Gant almost hit him… and Casto just smiled…

  40. LDS

Now if only Shildt would follow Bell’s lead, pull the starters, bring in some position players to pitch, this could turn into a really fun game.

  41. Gonzo Reds

Shame the ump is leaving as we’ve been getting more strike calls for Miley than Gant was receiving.

  42. Melvin

Casty making his case for MVP so far this year.

  43. RedsMonk65

Woke up from my nap dreaming the Reds were beating up on the Cards. Still a few innings left, but maybe true ….

  44. Tom Mitsoff

Cards beginning to square up Miley. Might be his final inning.

    • Dennis Westrick

Can have Miley start the 6th but with a short leash!

  45. Tom Mitsoff

It would be good to get a few more runs, then run the very back end of the bullpen out there for the final four innings. Maybe a good chance to give Amir Garrett a couple of innings to try to get settled.

    • Dennis Westrick

Agree, just hide all the gas cans!

      • Mark Moore

And lock up the dynamite room. No smoking today for the BP!!

    • RedsMonk65

Looks like Miley has had a good game. If he’s getting low on gas, though, I sure would feel more comfortable having a some more runs on the board to bullpen-proof this game.

  46. RedsMonk65

Here we go. The bullpen circus commences.

    • Corky Miller

He was at 92 pitches. It’s state law you can’t go over 100.

  47. Old-school

Give Miley credit, battled and gave 5 innings and no runs.
What a run of SP this week.

Per Cot’s contracts, Miley has a club option at $10 million in 2022. That’s a no brainer or a huge trade option. Reds get to reset this season and see what happens till the All Star break.

    • Mark Moore

Agreed. LHP who can provide innings as a starter is well worth that in today’s market.

  48. Dennis Westrick

Feliz doesn’t have it! Next victim!

  49. Mark Moore

Need a GIDP in the worst way here.

    Nice play by Geno.

  50. Dennis Westrick

One pitch away from a 2 run game!

  51. Mark Moore

Definitely time to switch him out. He’s throwing grapefruits.

  52. LDS

Why is Felix still in there. 5 straight batters reached base. No outs.

  53. Dennis Westrick

Ridiculous! Might as well bring in AG and see if he can complete the Cards comeback!

  54. Indy Red Man

Bell? He walked the guy after the hr. That should’ve been enough? 3 straight guys reach instead of 5? C’mon?

I think Bell has done a decent job overall, but he just doesn’t seem to have a feel for his pitchers. They’re off tomorrow so do what you have to do to lock this one down!

    • Indy Red Man

Whats wrong with Warren anyway? He’s got better stuff then Felix.

  55. Tom Mitsoff

I’m very interested to see if Brach can shut this down with little or no additional damage. He’s pitched his way into third in the bullpen depth chart behind Antone and Sims. Let’s see if he is really that guy.

  56. RedsMonk65

When this team gets back to Cincy, those in the front office really need to huddle together and decide on a plan of action if they expect to compete for the NL Central this year. The hitting is pretty good. The starting pitching, after a few early hiccups, is looking much better. But this bullpen is absolute nonsense. Cowboy was right the other night — without a decent bullpen you can count on to close out games, those other two components don’t matter.

So the front office better be devising a strategy — trade someone for a reliever or two, bring someone up, whatever. It has to go beyond waiting for Lorenzen to return and hoping AG sorts it out.

    • RojoB

I agree with you, but has this front office had a wise strategy in the last 20 years? Why would it change this season?

    • RojoB

Because the Reds picked him off waivers earlier this season and DFA Sal Romano

  57. Corky Miller

They should use a RH opener on Wiley’s starts…. he has 99% chance of going less than 6 innings.

  58. Tom Mitsoff

That was strike three on Carpenter.

  59. Mark Moore

Right on top of it and still doesn’t call it. Unbelievable.

  60. Indy Red Man

These umps? I swear to God. Reds get cheated again. What was wrong with that pitch?

    • Mark Moore

      No accountability. None at all.

It’s way past time for a significant change.

  61. RedsMonk65

I should just go back to sleep …

  62. Tom Mitsoff

There is no such thing as a comfortable lead with this bullpen.

  63. LDS

Maybe Bell will learn that this is why you don’t pull your starters and give up

  64. Gonzo Reds

Sure enough the change in ump is killing us! Carpenter was struck out but no now it’s 7-4 instead.

  65. RedsMonk65

Oh, for pete’s sake! Pull it together, people!

  66. VaRedsFan

Awful…Carpenter was out…the whole ball was inside the box.
    3 run double

  67. Tom Mitsoff

Now Bell has to get Antone and Sims up for sure.

  68. Mark Moore

Bell just gave the sign to pray …

    And NOW Antone is up.

  69. Indy Red Man

Antone now 2-0 count. Do it already. If he’s warming up then bring him in? The time is now!

    • Corky Miller

3rd appearance in 4 days.. asking a lot of this guy.

  70. Mark Moore

Smoking in the dynamite room whilst whizzing petrol at the same time.

  71. Dennis Westrick

I can’t believe this is happening again!

    • Steve

If u are going to use tj, why not get him in 5 runs ago!

  72. Mark Moore

The only consolation … and I’m stretching here … is how bad their bullpen is and how well we’ve been hitting.

This one is entirely on Bell and the bullpen.

  73. CI3J

I want to type some things that would get me banned from this site.

So instead, I’m just gonna say:

    Fiddlesticks.

  74. J

It takes a special kind of lunacy to wait until the bases are loaded with 5 runs in before it occurs to you to bring in one of your good relief pitchers.

  75. LDS

Fire Bell today. If he couldn’t realize he had a problem with Feliz’s third batter, he’s not big league material

    • Tom Mitsoff

You can’t blame him that he has the guys he has been given to call upon.

      • Mark Moore

Only to a point as he makes the decisions when to use them and for how long.

      • Corky Miller

Exactly right. Sparky Anderson couldn’t win with this bullpen

      • LDS

Sure you can. He could have pulled the plug more quickly. He could have stuck with Miley to open the inning. And yes, Sparky would win with this bullpen.

  76. Tom Mitsoff

You’ve got two All-Star outfielders and pretty good starting pitching, but this team has no chance to win the division with this current bullpen.

    • Mark Moore

And I truly believe it is win or stay home. No WC team out of the Central this year.

    • RedsMonk65

It needs to be addressed ASAP — with a trade, call-up, or something. The bullpen is the only thing keeping this team from truly competing for the NL Central at this time. As Cowboy said the other night, good hitting and starting pitching do you no good if your bullpen implodes just about every game.

Ideally, this would have been addressed over the offseason. Doing it now makes it more difficult, but they really do need an influx of new arms in the bullpen. I would trade one of our extra outfielders, maybe someone else, to get a more reliable arm. Of course, other teams who are contending will not be willing to give their good bullpen pitchers up. So you probably have to begin to look at those relief pitchers languishing on teams who are going nowhere this year.

  77. Indy Red Man

Day off tomorrow is huge. Why not go to Antone before it takes a miracle to keep the lead. I defend Bell all the time on here, but his handling of pitching is horrible.

Paul Goldslump for the dp!!! 1 more!!

    • Indy Red Man

Wow hung a breaking ball. That was not the time to do that.

  78. bug

Bell is the worse manager I’ve ever seen. And I’ve been a Reds fan for over 60 years. How could he lose this game. Now he puts in Antone. Brilliant move, Bell. And Sadak is the biggest idiot I’ve ever heard. Pitiful!!!

    • CI3J

Eh….. Bell is pretty “meh”. Probably below average. But he’s not Bob Boone or Dave Miley levels. Heck, I’d even say he’s better than Price.

      But still…He’s just “meh”.

  79. Melvin

Worst bullpen in baseball comes through again. Thanks Big Bob.

    • Corky Miller

Imagine if Bell could have gone to Doolittle or Garrett to face Carpenter and Edmund.

Either Bell didn’t think of it or that’s how far those two have fallen.

  80. RedsMonk65

Tie game. All Miley’s good work (and Winker’s and India’s, etc.) down the drain. Unbelievable. Well, actually it is believable. Atrocious nonetheless.

  81. J

Baseball just isn’t a good fit for Bell. Things happen much too quickly for him to process what’s going on.

    • Dennis Westrick

I agree! Everyone, but Bell, could see Feliz didn’t have it! He just doesn’t react to what’s happening or plan for the next move!

    • TR

I’ve said all along that David Bell is a front office man. He came to the Reds from being V.P of Personnel for the SF Giants. The old sociological ‘Peter Principle’ says people are often promoted to their incompetence.

    • Melvin

There may be a lot of truth to that. He has to plan things out ahead of time. Just not able to adjust very well and not just “in game” situations. He may know that’s a weakness and then overcompensates hence the some times crazy, often unnecessary moves.

  82. Dennis Westrick

So much for the 7-0 lead. Like I said in earlier posts, don’t let the best player, in this case Arenado, beat you! Not blaming it on TA! This is all on Bell, again!

  83. bug

Someone should put a sock in Sadak’s mouth. What a moron!!!

    • Mark Moore

Between his “on the black” and other semi-mindless comments, I’m in agreement. I realize it’s year one for him and he’s trying to find his voice, but he needs to know that less is more and be a better student of the game. At least that’s what I see (and hear).

      • J

The one I’ve really been noticing lately is the phrase “got a piece” when a guy strikes out on a foul tip, and then eventually he’ll mention the guy has struck out. It’s as if he doesn’t remember what the rules are until he sees the guy walking back to the dugout.

  84. Steve

I listen to the cardinals broadcast, thanks how much I can’t take listening to john

  85. gpod

why can’t someone in in media actually hold David Bell to the fire & ask him to answer the question: “How do you expect to win anything with this bullpen?” ANSWER THE QUESTION!!!!

  86. VaRedsFan

Why pitch to their hottest hitter with 1st base open?

  87. Mark Moore

I have to think about starting the charcoal for those t-bones we’re having tonight. Not sure how much more of this I can watch.

  88. Mark Moore

OK, Geno. If it ever were the time …

  89. Indy Red Man

Miley 92 pitches. He could’ve got 1 more. They hadn’t put any across on him. Its not like he’s max effort 96 mph anyway? Bell manages like he’s got a decent to good pen. You have got to limit their exposure every single day. Especially when you’ve already used TA & Sims recently.

Our lineup is getting better and starters are doing better, but this pen is a killer.
Try Lodolo!!! We can’t run with these guys. They suck!

  90. ClevelandRedsFan

Miley was at 92 pitches!!!! If anything give him another inning to save the pen.

Why does Bell consistently pull his starters early to give way to the worst bullpen in MLB. The prospects in AA throw more pitches than the big leaguers.

  91. Dennis Westrick

Now Hendrix? I’m convinced that Bell doesn’t care about winning! Feel sorry for Wade Miley! Should have been a sure win for him, and YES, he probably could have pitched the 6th inning or at least started the inning!

    • Corky Miller

Miley should have went longer. He may have asked out for all we know.

Look at the ERAs of this bullpen. Imagine if we didn’t have Antone. The rest is a crap shoot.

I would like to see Lodolo and even Greene come up, and pitch in relief if this team somehow stayed in it the hunt say August.

David Price was one that did it for the Rays, that went to the World Series..

  92. J

I guess Antone is being saved for tomorrow’s off day?

    • DHud

Relief pitchers can’t come back out the next inning

      Everyone knows that

      • J

They can if you make a double-switch. That’s a loophole.

  93. TyGuy88

Michael Feliz should not be on a big league roster. He has a career 5.38 ERA (before today). There is a CLEAR need for bullpen help. If the FO is serious about contending this season they need to go out and address this need.

  94. gregp

if you know Feliz is not a quality pitcher (which we all know he’s not) and you bring him into a game with a 7 run lead, you can see how it goes …..after 3 batters & he gives up 2 runs & has not recorded an out…..that’s all you need to see….get him out before he blows the game….seems like common sense to me

    • J

It’s just incredible. He takes out Miley who could easily have thrown another inning or two, presumably because he thinks he’s being “proactive” in some way, but then sits there and watches the game slip away as if there’s absolutely nothing to worry about. He’s proactive when there’s no reason to be, and slow to respond to what’s actually happening on the field. He seems to be living in his own little world.

      • RedAlert

I’ve said it many times here – worst manager in MLB and has zero feel for the game ! Thinks he’s smarter than every body else. Dude doesn’t use common sense logic at all – clueless

  95. VaRedsFan

Awesome play by India with the the foot block!

  96. Indy Red Man

I think your average manager pulls Felix at 7-2 and a walk. Then go to Brach with TA starting to warm up. 2 straight reach on Brach then you go to TA while you still hold the lead. It would’ve been like 7-3 with men on 2nd/3rd. We’d still be up 7-5

The ump failed miserably with Carpenter, but Bell is still at fault. Especially with tomorrow off. Go all-out to put this one away!

  97. TyGuy88

Why is Hendrix batting in the 8th inning of a tie game when Hembree is warming up? Does Bell’s book of management say that any changes on the field require a double switch?

  98. JB

For all the people calling for Greene or Lodolo to be called up, it’s not that easy this year due to covid. Teams can call for players from triple AAA because they are part of the same Tier 1 COVID-19 protocols their counterparts in the big leagues have been since the start of the season. They can come up and take a quick test is all. Not so in lower levels. They are not considered part of Tier 1, so they aren’t subject to the same level of testing and other protocols as their Triple-A and major league counterparts. If they do get called up they will have to sit out for a period of time.

    • Doc

I’m calling for the manager of the Daytona Tortugas to be called up and for DB to be placed on the mentally unable to perform list!

    • Indy Red Man

Do what you have to do before this team gets buried. They’re close enough now and Castellanos will probably bail. No time like the present!

    • Corky Miller

Wasn’t aware of the different rules for Covid… thanks for the explanation.

  99. Tom Mitsoff

    I’m guessing it’s Doolittle time.

  100. Indy Red Man

Hembree allowed runs in 5 of last 6 appearances and he’s in a tie game. Alrighty then

    • JB

Who else would you prefer? Garrett? Doolittle?

      • J

I would have preferred letting Antone throw more than 6 pitches.

      • JB

I totally agree. He is in the game so use him.

  101. Rex

my wife suspects that Bell has money on the CARDS today

  102. Indy Red Man

Well road teams have been cleaning up with the new extra inning rule so maybe that will help? We have to get there first.

One thing that might help is Reyes has horrible walk issues and that has to catch up sometime just like Gant’s 1.52 whip caught up today.

  103. Tom Mitsoff

Nice inning by Hembree. Left in the bullpen: Sims, Garrett, Doolittle, Goudeau.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Castellanos’ streak on the line, as well.

  104. RedsMonk65

Good job by Hembree that inning. Now we need to score some runs, and then hold the line in the bottom of the 9th with …. ???

  105. J

Feliz + Brach + Hembree = 57 pitches so far. Antone = 6. A very creative use of the pitching staff.

  106. RedsMonk65

Winker says: Let me see what I can do.

  107. Mark Moore

    Jesse.Freaking.Winker ladies and gents!

  108. Rex

    Winky Dink!

this is why I have not mowed my yard today

  109. J

Winker is a good hitter. I realize that might be controversial, but I had to say it.

    • Mark Moore

      I’d dock you points if I weren’t awarding a +250 J

  110. Melvin

Winker and Casty have held this team together so far.

  111. JB

Winker suckered them into that pitch. He complimented the catcher on the great curve thrown to him and the catcher tried it again and Winker took him deep. He waited on it.

  112. Gonzo Reds

    Jesse Jolt #3 !!!

Hope Sims is on in the 9th!

  113. VaRedsFan

    Wink does it.
Casto streak is over (i hope he doesn’t have to bat again)

    • Mark Moore

Let’s hope if he does it’s because we batted around 🙂

  114. VaRedsFan

Is it too much to ask for a 1-2-3 9th?

  115. J

Back to one of my earlier complaints: the Reds replaced Blandino with a relief pitcher they absolutely don’t want to use in any situation, including a 7-0 game. Why didn’t they replace a position player with a position player, since they actually use those guys in almost every game? Wouldn’t it be nice to have an extra batter/runner/fielder in this game? Instead, they have a guy who *might* make an appearance if the game goes at least 14 innings.

  116. Mark Moore

“A foul home run”???? Does he even hear himself?

    • Rex

      I thought that too

I hope they toss him next off season

  117. Melvin

This is pretty bad to possibly lose this game.

  118. VaRedsFan

Sims is as rocky as the rest of them. He’s been walking a tight rope lately.

  119. Dennis Westrick

Ugly win! But they all count come September!

  120. VaRedsFan

What a game fellas….It’s hard on my ticker…but worth it in the end.

  121. Melvin

Winker “saves” the day. Good job by Sims and good start by Miley.

  122. Gonzo Reds

First time since 1990. I wish we were as good as that team. But… that team had the Nasty Boys in the pen not the AA Boys…

    • LDS

And they had Lou Pinella instead of David Bell

    • TR

And Barry Larkin, Eric Davis and Paul O’Neil among others.

  123. J

That was a fantastic play by Barnhart. He should earn the save.

  124. Mark Moore

Geno waving to the fans …

    That’s a 2-game suspension, isn’t it?

  125. Mark Moore

A nightmare of a game for the latter part, but the outcome works for me.

Nice watching with y’all. Back for more on Tuesday.

    • Rex

4 game sweeps are rare, time for The Brewers

  126. TR

First 4 game sweep in St. Lou in 31 years. It wasn’t easy, but Winker, Miley and Sims get it done.

  127. Dennis Westrick

Thrilled with the 4 game sweep of the Dirty Birds! NOT HAPPY with the lack of retaliation for the 8 HBP of Reds batters! Who’s managing the Cards? Clint Hurdle?

    • Daytonnati

Bell probably orders it, but no one in the pen has good enough control to nail them 🙂
