Starting Pitchers
Vladimir Gutierrez
This is going to be the Major League debut for Vladimir Gutierrez. In spring training with the Reds he threw 7.0 shutout innings with two walks and 11 strikeouts. He then pitched for the alternate site team in April and joined the Triple-A Louisville Bats when the minor league season began on May 4th. He’s made three starts with the Bats, posting a 2.65 ERA in 17.0 innings where he allowed nine hits – three homers – seven walks, and he has struck out 21 batters.
Small sample size on his splits, but righties have hit .162/.262/.378 against him in 42 plate appearances this year in Triple-A. Lefties have hit .136/.240/.318 against him.
While we don’t have the precise details of his pitch selection and velocity like we do for guys in the big leagues because that data isn’t public, here’s the scouting report: Fastball that’s worked 93-95 and touched 97 this year, a curveball and a more slurvy curveball that can both be above-average pitches, and a solid change up.
Adbert Alzolay
Over the last three seasons Alzolay has only pitched in 14 games for the Cubs, but eight of them have come this year. He’s only walked seven batters in 44.0 innings and he’s struck out 45 – a very good ratio, but he’s also been very home run prone this season as he’s given up nine long balls so far. His slider is his go-to pitch and he throws it nearly half of the time.
There are some splits for Adbert Alzolay this year. He’s held right-handed hitters to a .176/.213/.329 line on the year with 3 walks and 28 strikeouts. Lefties haven’t hit for much average, either, but they’ve hit for plenty of power with a .216/.266/.500 line against him to go with 4 walks and 17 strikeouts. He’s also posted a 5.03 ERA at home where he’s given up five homers in 19.2 innings (3.70 ERA on the road).

News and Notes
Vladimir Gutierrez officially called up
While we’ve known for a few days now that Vladimir Gutierrez was being called up, the move was not official. Not until this afternoon, that is. The team made the roster move, and optioned right-handed pitcher Ashton Goudeau back to Triple-A Louisville. Art Warren, who was the 27th man for last night’s doubleheader in Washington returned to his spot on the taxi squad.
Wade Miley and Tyler Mahle flip spots
Wade Miley is eligible to come off of the injured list on Sunday, but he is going to return to the rotation on Monday while the team goes with Tyler Mahle on Sunday to wrap up their series in Chicago as first reported by The Cincinnati Enquirer’s Bobby Nightengale.
Jesse Winker and Joey Votto
In case you missed it this morning, Ashley Davis took a look at how Jesse Winker compares to Joey Votto in his age 27 season here on the digital pages of Redleg Nation. Go give it a read.
A catcher AND a catch
Last night in Louisville there was a catch followed immediately by a catch. Confused yet? Well, watch the video of Dwight Smith Jr’s catcher and then what followed.

Could you imagine if Winker and Castellanos went down right now?? That line up is something else right now.
Believe it or not I do like them at 1 & 2 so I agree with David Bell this time. 🙂
Is the weather still iffy for getting started?
Latest radar suggests they have about a 2.5 hour window in which to play this game.
From The Rookie … “Work fast. We’ve got a long bus ride.”
Looking at those standards and playoff possibility projections, all I can say is that approaching a third of the way through the season, there is a computer somewhere that is a big Brewers fan.
So why is Suarez sitting when he’s finally showing signs of life?
Signs of life? I think he’s still hit like 2-20 leading off.
Since May 10th he’s hitting .212 (14-66) with 6 hrs/13 rbis. I’d take a HR every 11 at-bats moving forward.
baby steps…baby steps
As leadoff Suárez:
13PAs; BA .333; OBP .385; SLG .833; OPS 1.218; wRC+233
4 for 12 in WAS with home runs off both Scherzer and Strasburg.
Okay Okay. So I was wrong. Geez. All you guys with your stats and facts and stuff. I was counting in my head and I thought he was still batting pretty miserably.
We choose truth over facts!
Alzolay allowing .766 ops to lefties and .542 to righties. It’s probably a good idea to give Schrock a start here.
Fair enough!
Its in the 40s and the wind is blowing in 20+ mph then the ump decides to expand the strike zone on Naquin
Its unbelievable how many guys are hitting .225 or less. Soler just hit 48 HRs 2 years ago and he’s hitting .171 with 4 hrs.
If they’re determined to turn baseball into soccer then I’ll quit watching. Its very simple. 2-1 every game is a “good ole good one” to Marty Brenneman, but I’m not 90 years old. I’ll bail and I won’t look back.
Imagine if Soler was on the Reds. Redleg nation would be ripping him to pieces .
Does it ever get warm in Chicago? That doesn’t look fun out there.
It is good to hear The Cowboy on TV
Shrock and India are hit and run boys…pay attention veterans
Hit and run? Is David Bell feeling okay today? 🙂 Good job. Don’t wake him up.
shhhhhh!
hahaha
I hate these kind of games where there is about a 30% of anyone hitting a HR, but I’m happy for Gutierrez! Can’t pick a much better situation for your mlb debut!
Indeed…the o/u today was a microscopic 6.5
Yep. I took it when I saw everyone all bundled up.
Nuts! Lost Ortega after a tough AB.
It really looks cold there today. Glad I’m sitting in my living room.
That ball of Castellanos bat sounded “dead” to me.
Loved the TySteve hustle there – tough break on the GR2B.
Can we capitalize on the opportunity?
Of course we can’t … SMH!
Rotten break for Tucker….ground rule double…probably cost them a run
They got the breaks yesterday and not today. So is life..
2 LOB’s in each of the last 3 innings.
Offense needs to keep the pressure on and we will begin to score.Don’t let up.Keep battling and they will start to fall in.Go Reds
How does Gutierrez look thus far? (I can’t watch the Reds on TV)
Not bad.
Good, thanks. Don’t want to jinx him or anything, but following along, I saw that while he hasn’t struck anyone out, he also hasn’t allowed many walks or any runs. For a Reds pitcher through the first 3 innings, that’s good!
Pretty efficient from what I’ve seen.
Way better than Hoffman. Has movement on his fastball. Just after 3 innings and I would give him Hoffmans spot. With his pants pulled up to his knees he reminds me a little of El Duque.
Thanks, all. (See above)
I like that style. They started out as the Red Stockings. Vlad needs some offensive support.
Needs some work on his bunting. lol
Good catch by Winker there. Him running towards the wall didn’t bring good feelings though. lol
That’s a good inning for our Redlegs. Nice focus by Da Wink.
Time to do some damage.
India = ball magnet
This umpire is horrible. It’s a toss up on every pitch.
+100
In the box score, that just looks like a Sac Bunt … the way we got there doesn’t matter one bit.
I think his hand came off.
Yeah but Fatmer didnt keep the glove on him.
Farmer lol
Yeah – saw that on the replay.
It’s amazing to me how many calls umpires miss.
Far, far too many
There goes the no-hitter. Blame it on me. I should not have mentioned it! 😉
There goes the shut out.
Nice time for his first two K’s. Welcome to the Show young man.
Despite the impressive start by Gutierrez, Bell needs to have a short leash on the rookie pitcher. 5 or 6 innings would be great! Getting son=me runs would be great as well!
Nuts!!
Hopefully it wakes the pathetic Reds bats up now that they are losing. 7 LOB is terrible.
They’ve hit some ropes but the wind is knocking them down. Barnhart’s double hopping over that big side wall really hurt too. That was an easy rbi
Not an easy game. Night game in DC, afternoon in Wrigley. Down by one. There’s still time.
Do the Reds realize they beat far better pitchers in the last couple of days? I expected some runs today.
I hope they keep Gutti-er-ez on the big club…we looks great
*he
Once again its in the 40s with 20+ mph winds blowing in. He did throw strikes and made them hit it. He took what Mother Nature offered instead of always nibbling like Hoffman, but I wouldn’t put too much stock in this game
+100
maybe but he seemed good in the spring too. it is not a bad first start.
You could also say that the umpire is horrible and missed alot of strikes that were called balls. He threw 67 pitches and pitched to the weather. Does he throw them cookies down the middle that he knows the batter cant hit out? Yes. Just throw strikes and let the weather be your friend. Nice first outing .
Hembree???
It’s a one run game with 2-3-4 hitters due up, so obviously you want to bring in your 4th or 5th best reliever.
Exactly … we got lucky to a point. And then the ump blows another call.
Umpire “believing” doesn’t absolve him of poor performance. It’s time, my friends.
Votto’s in the radio booth helping call the game right now…
TV booth said that. How’s he doing?
Pretty good, actually. Did some play by play. Made some keen insights. Straightforward, easy-going. Good sense of humor, too.
Down the line, with a little more experience, he might make a really good broadcaster, if he’s interested in going that route.
Votto is still in the booth — for the third inning, now, I think….
and some style:
“fly ball, curling into the stands…”
(I like the use of the word “curling.”)
He’s quite entertaining.
Thrall: Joey’s just sticking around here in the booth until he can call a home run.
Joey: Yeah, you can have the call for the Cubs. I’ll take the one for the Reds.
I already prefer Votto to Larkin or Welsh 🙂
Votto: I’m staying for the win. Even if it takes 17 innings.
Thrall: Joey, how do you beat this guy (Kimbrel)?
Joey: It’s like fishing, my man.
67 pitches and 1 run and you pull Gutierrez come on give me a break, total over managing.
Because we needed Suarez to K in a pressure situation.
How many of Suarez’s hits leading off came with RISP? He’s not delivering on RISP this year.
Reds struggle to score so every lost chance gets bigger and bigger and bigger.Come on can’t go down this easy.Wake up and win this game.
Double Nuts!!!
6 innings with a runner in scoring position and it resulted in zero runs. Also, that is at least the 5th time Stephenson has hit into a double play with runners in scoring position. Needs to learn pitch selection. It was a lefty as well. Game over.
Sadly, I think you’re right.
Of course, we’ve hit their bullpen hard before …
These guys need to score some runs! Time is running out.
Seven hits, 0 runs. Come on!
A loss to the Stupid Cubs totally stinks. Losing by a single run when we’ve squandered opportunities nearly every inning? I’m at a loss for words (at least those that Doug would allow on the site).
9 pitches in top of 8th!
leaving Doolitle in for a second inning is bad for stomach
Yes, lots of missed opportunities on offense but it’s Bell that worries me. Outstanding outing for Guiterrez and then removed after 67 pitches, same for Hembree after 24 pitches, now Doolittle. Getting nervous. Why does he do this? These pros can’t throw any more pitches than that?
Tom Terrific is rolling over in his grave at the pitch and inning counts.
“On the black” … really dislike that phrase. It’s there as a border to HP. If it’s “on the black” it’s a ball because it didn’t cross the plate.
Sorry, small pet peeve.
Somebody gets on … then Winker muscles a HR.
Winker hasn’t had many 0 for 5 games … kind of due today.
Guys, no double switch there! Probably Payton hitting for Brach. Lets get some runs!
Anybody else annoyed with his “chicken wing” thing?
it worked for Joe, I’m annoyed with the pocket hanging out flapping in the air
Meaning Kimbrel.
Two overmatches. Let’s go Winker
I need a new hobby
As Huey Lewis sang: I need a new drug.
Stupid Cubs.
Almost as bad as losing to the Stupid Cardinals.
They’re done. Start bringing up the youngsters. The pitcher looked good today. Maybe they can find d someone who can hit with runners in scoring position. A major over haul is needed. Manager included.
See y’all tomorrow
RATS
Joey: I don’t think I’m ever coming back. I’m bad luck. I can’t wait to be doing my real job.
For those who missed it: If you have access to the archived audio feed of this game, listening to Joey Votto call the plays and interact with Tommy Thrall and Chris Welsh for nearly half the game is definitely worth your time despite the Reds’ loss.
Not absolutely sure, but if you have mlb.tv subscription (I only have audio subscription), you should be able to listen to the archived feed.
Again, it’s a treat, and Votto gets better as the game goes on….
