Well, this is going to be an interesting game preview today. The Arizona Diamondbacks and Cincinnati Reds will begin the day at 5:30pm ET by completing the game that started last night. The originally announced start time of 5:10pm ET has been pushed back as it is currently snowing in Cincinnati and the tarp has been placed on the infield.
They will then play their regularly scheduled game. Game two will begin at 6:50pm ET.
Game 1 Information
The Arizona Diamondbacks are leading 5-4 in the top of the 8th inning with the bases loaded and one out. They took the lead in the inning, which is why the game was suspended rather than called – the home team can’t have a game called official if they lost a lead in a game during the inning in which is being played and they have not had a chance to bat.
Of course, the situation that led to Arizona taking the lead wasn’t great. Tejay Antone threw a shutout 7th, but gave up a leadoff homer in the 8th that tied the game up at 4-4. Amir Garrett allowed a walk and a double to put runners on 2nd and 3rd before a line drive to Eugenio Suárez recorded the first out of the inning.
That’s when the controversy began, though. Lucas Sims was brought into the game right as the rain began to pick up, and before he got a chance to throw his first pitch it also began to sleet. Rather than pull the tarp there, the umpires decided to play on as if there weren’t ice pummeling the field. Sims proceeded to hit the first batter to load the bases and then he walked the next batter to put Arizona in front. It was a disaster. Here we are, though, and this is where the game will be picked up.
Lucas Sims was on the mound when the game was suspended. He had not yet faced three batters. But the 3-batter rule does not apply to suspended games. Manager David Bell said that Sims may return to the mound for the game, but he may not. He’s not going to announce that decision yet.

Starting Pitchers
Tyler Mahle
It’s been a strong start to the season for Tyler Mahle in some regards. He’s posted a 2.57 ERA through his first three starts and picked up 22 strikeouts in 14.0 innings. The only not-so-great part about that statline is that he’s only thrown 14.0 innings in three starts. When he’s been on the mound since the start of 2020 he’s been very good – 3.36 ERA in 13 games and 61.2 innings – he’s just not been able to consistently reach the 6th inning.
This season has been interesting from a splits perspective. We are obviously dealing with a small sample size of just three starts, but right-handed hitters are crushing the ball against him to the tune of a .911 OPS. Left-handed hitters, however, are 1-25 against him with four walks. The only hit was a single. That’s good for a .040 average and a .212 OPS against Mahle from lefties.

4-Seam | Slider | Splitter | |
Velo | 94.9 | 87.8 | 87.3 |

Merrill Kelly
Unlike Tyler Mahle, Merrill Kelly has struggled this season. He’s allowed 15 earned runs in 16.0 innings pitched in his three starts this season. His strikeout rate has plummeted, fanning just 10 batters thus far. When the Reds were in Arizona last week they missed Kelly in the rotation. Tonight will be his 4th start on the road this season.
Small sample size in 2021, but both lefties and righties are hitting him well. Lefties are hitting .313/.324/.563 against him, while righties have a .351/.400/.622 line against him. His velocity is down so far this year when compares to the last two seasons.

News and Notes
Art Warren added as the “extra man” for Game 2
Since the game is technically a part of a double header today, both teams get to add an extra player to their roster for game 2. The Reds chose to call up right-handed pitcher Art Warren to be their 27th player.
Cam Bedrosian elects free agency
Last week the Cincinnati Reds designated Cam Bedrosian for assignment. After he cleared waivers he was outrighted to the Reds alternate site. Rather than accept the assignment he opted to become a free agent this afternoon.

That umpire should be suspended for 2 games.
I’d support that on multiple fronts.
I wonder how many different ways it’s possible for one team to be unfairly penalized using the word “suspended.” I have a feeling we’re going to find out this season.
Doug, A couple questions Art Warren based on very small sample pitched well for the Mariners in 2019. Was he injured in 2020 or just didn’t make the club?
Also will game 2 be 9 or 7 innings? Thanks
Amir Garrett has not been stellar to say the least, during this early season.
That’s an understatement. I feel like he is trying to hard. He is in his own head too much that he has to be perfect. I sure hope he puts things together cause right now he looks pretty unimpressive.
Hoping for a comeback and two wins today. It is early in the season still but with what happened last night that could have cost the Reds the game and I’m still mad about it.
Game 1 resumption has had the start time pushed back to 5:30pm ET due to snow.
Tarp is on the field. It’s snowing again.
So you’re saying it’s perfect weather to play according to the umps?
+100
Umpires will probably want to go ahead and start the game.
I’m confused? It says 44 degrees in Cincinnati today so how is it snowing? Its 45 in Indy so obviously the snow is melting. What a weird start to the season.
Bases loaded and EscoRuth at the plate….lets get Game 2!! Mahle vs Kelly (8.44 era)
It’s 34 right now. It dropped rather quickly.
Very steep low level temperature lapse rates. Freezing level very low.
Nice job Sims. Now they need a run to tie.
Pinning our Hopes on Suarez. He struck out on something away.SURPRISE!
I turned on MLB.tv just in time to see Geno get that Golden Sombrero. Of course, it was on an 0-2 pitch far down and away. He just can’t lay off that garbage.
Suarez just had – pound for pound – the worst at bat I’ve ever seen…
Fat fastball right down the middle – dribbled foul
Cutter outside – whiff
Breaking pitch 15 feet outside – whiff
Such is life. Whip em tonight, tho.
What makes it worse is the very quality ab’s his teammates put up before that
I thought it was a throw to first that he whiffed on!
My God, what a terrible at-bat from Suarez there to end it. What has happened to him?
Farmer at SS in this game. This is ridiculous. I like Suarez and he worked hard to lose weight to play SS, but he needs a break. Tired of losing to the scrub Snakes. They’re 4-9 vs everyone else. On the other hand your “ace”, your “closer”, and your top “slugger” have been beyond horrible and you’re still 9-7. These next 2 games need to be wins! Period!
He looks list and hopeless at bat. As someone else wrote above, that final at bat was one of the worstABs I’ve ever seen. Just flailing. He might as well have been blind-folded. I’d bench him for more than one game.
Suarez got to wear his golden sombrero afterall. 4 strike outs in this loss. I remember back in the day,…well, I won’t go there.
I don’t like asking this, but how long can the Reds keep running Geno out there? He is hitting a buck fifty five and looks lost. That pitch on his last cut was never a strike. Maybe he needs the Votto Treatment and rides the pine for a few days. Call up Garcia for a few days. Improve the D and not lose anything at the plate.
Agreed….someone needs to sit him down and tell him we want 18-19 Geno back.
Just put Farmer there…he is more than capable
He isn’t competing. He struck out 4 times and only came in contact with the ball 3 times. That is not competing and that can’t be allowed to happen at any level especially in the big leagues.Time to set him or talk to him or both. Not acceptable for any reason.
Yep, bottom line I want someone who WANTS to be out there. Not sure Suarez does at this point. Bring up Garcia, bench Suarez as having some fake 10 day disease
That is a preposterous statement. Geno doesn’t want to be there? How many MLers volunteer to change to a much more difficult position and dedicate themselves to a fitness regimen to accomplish that? Please. Save it.
And there went first place. At least Doolittle pitched well.
Anyone else feeling good about suarez’s goal of 50 home runs this year? I Knew when he started saying that it would end up being a 200 strike out season for him.
Rant over – Good vibes only!
I’m not sure ive ever seen such a pathetic at bat,any manager worth a grain of salt would sit him,the only team he’s helping is the diamondbacks, no effort on tgat at bat at all
Grain of salt, eh? And there’s the problem.
I liked Blandino’s at bat. Would give him a spot start in game 2 in hopes of a spark.
The bigger issue is that we need Eugenio. He will not be traded nor will he be benched and that has been part of the problem we have had for years.Nobody is at risk of being set down unless you are a young guy trying hard to play a very hard game.I have gave him the benefit of the doubt with him playing a new position and hoping it was just a slow start and saying he will be fine.No more after today. If he doesn’t want to play how on earth does he expect others to do that. This team has talent and could surprise but it takes everybody every day competing.Win or lose you must put forth an effort and he did not.I can’t even explain that kind of effort other then to say he doesn’t care.Other teams would set him down or send him down and never blink.
This isn’t high school baseball. No team just sits their core players because they had a 2-3 week slump. You may not like that, but no one operates their professional baseball franchise like that.
Maybe somebody needs to.
I never said it was high school baseball you did.I said other teams would set players that don’t compete and they do.I didn’t say throw him away and what I said was true he did not compete. Now you may not like that but its true.I also said he wouldn’t be traded or benched and I also said we need him.
No team would be sitting Suarez right now. Maybe give him a day off, but they aren’t benching him.
Why not move Suarez back to third until Moose comes back and play Farmer at short? Maybe a change of scenery?
I’m sure they don’t want him playing anywhere but short if they can possibly help it. It’s not going to help him make the transition if he sometimes plays third. Why he has to continue hitting third in the order is beyond me, however.
Suarez hitting third again? I assume this means Bell knows something we don’t. Maybe the last several strikeouts looked more impressive to him than they did to the rest of us.
Win tonight and get to 3 over again and can still win the series and head to St Louis with a strong April still intact
Play a clean game and get a win
Senzel and India hitting 5th and 6th and both in slumps. Boy do they miss Nick C. and Moose right now. Hope they all come out of their slumps in this game. Cards coming up this weekend and then the Dodgers. Brewers catching the Padres at the right time.
Man- Thrall’s enunciation/is really wearing me down. He’s gone full stiff-jaw announcer and his repetitive cadence is bugging me. He’s the least natural/conversational play-by-play guy I’ve heard in a long, long time. Before the last few games, I’d never felt that way. Hoping he can relax. Just wanted to throw that out there!!
Poor footwork by India led to him having to try the “glove flip”
Needs to be better
No harm done as Mahle takes over.
Let’s root for some run support!
When did the 2021 Arizona Diamondbacks become the 1927 Yankees? Only when playing the Reds!
Mahle is on tonight. Good to see that.
That’s the way to manufacture some runs. I’ll take that all night, every night.
Nicely executed inning…hit…sac bunt…Wink hit and hustle…didn’t take for granted that it would be an auto double….then Naquin sac fly
That’s good baseball. Timely hitting, getting the man in from third with less than two outs, plus one hit pitching.
Count the ways thru 6 innings reds are playing fundamental baseball
Hitting. Pitching.defense . Small ball execution on the bases
Buckled down and got through it. Nice evening by Mahle.
Getting to the point in the game where I get nervous that Bell will wake up from his in-game nap and start micromanaging. I start praying, cross my fingers and light the incense and votive candle in front of my Jobu statue!
I hear that!
And now he’ s messing in.
I hope Antone doesn’t yield a 3 run dinger
I mean Mahle’s been ON IT tonight. And you won’t let him face Junior Varsity?
+500
It’s coming, Mahle’s at about 90 pitches. Who had the last complete game In the Bell era?
I think it has only happened last season in those 7 inning double header games.
Tough AB there but I’m thinking Mahle got squeezed a little bit.
I dont like pulling Mahle there. It’s not like he is missing by alot. Easily both pitches could have been strikes. Vanmeter scares nobody.
Going way out on a limb, here, but Tyler Mahle might be having a breakout year if he keeps this up
As of right now he is the best starter.
Now that Bell has engaged himself in Mahle’s masterpiece, please, please, please let Antone pitch more than one (1) inning! And, no Amir please! Same goes for Big Sal Romano!
Luvello just came out and made a bunch of moves so Bell will have to counter with more. Kind of a hold my beer moment.
Antone just asked Suarez to hold his beer after that error with the authoritative strike out of the next batter with high heat!
That’s what I would like to see Castillo do. Just rear back and throw some gas and say hear it is. Then give out that growl like Antone did.
AG has his coat off stretching…beware.
Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!!! Let Antone finish it!
DW– don’t look! AG in.
But let’s hope he gets right here
“Henny” as Larkin calls him, looks adrift at sea.
He has been on twice this game so I’ll take those baby steps.
You’re right. Gotta start somewhere
The only regret I have for John Sadak is that his voice register is almost identical to THom’s, especially at higher volume. Makes me wince and have PTSD flashbacks.
Amazing how that cold air knocks that ball down because I thought Votto’s ball was 10 rows deep.
Good point I wondered why that looked so weird
Annnd, we’re off …
So a guy touted as a starter is done at 26 pitches? Bell is at it again. And if Garrett doesn’t nail it down, send him to AAA and fire Bell. All Garrett’s talk in the spring just hasn’t born fruit thus far. Maybe he needs to pay more attention to baseball and less to being an SJW.
+1000
I said the same thing a couple weeks ago and received a response from the blogger basically saying I was an idiot. He’s needs to change his Twitter handle too.
>>>Now that Bell has engaged himself in Mahle’s masterpiece, please, please, please let Antone pitch more than one (1) inning! And, no Amir please!
Yes!!
>>>So a guy touted as a starter is done at 26 pitches? Bell is at it again. And if Garrett doesn’t nail it down, send him to AAA and fire Bell.
Please yes!
This probably isn’t going to work. Get Sims in there before the lead is gone
Classic AG relief appearance! Walk the first batter, then give up a hit, hopefully not a HR. Bell is a slow learner. AG’s ERA is north of 12 and that is not an aberration!
swung at ball 4…caught a break
Hey AG! To get a strike you have to throw the ball over the odd-shaped white thing called the home plate!
This is torture.
Please get Sims up. Dont need to lose the game because Garrett needs work.
Thanks Bell. That was swell. I saw the breaking ball had no bite and that could happen. JVM has some pop
What’s with Bell? Brings in a guy with a 12.46 ERA in a game the Reds need. He has two strikes and he walks him.
Why does Bell continually put the reliever that is struggling the most, in the highest leverage situation in every game? What is going on between those ears?
Here’s a thought…..maybe put him in a low leverage situation or two to restore his confidence? But what do I know.
Unbelievable. I don’t blame Garrett. Bell needs his head screwed back on. Two consecutive games, come on.
Garrett is adrift at sea
UN-Belling Believable
Pitchers struggle. Bell is the one adrift.
Well I have no argument with that!
He is just all kinds of awful right now.
DOWN and IN to a power hitting lefty?
Amir owes Mahle a car for blowing this. The bad thing is that if the Reds score in the 9th then HE will get the win not Mahle–ok at least he just put in Fulmer
As day follows night …
I was wrong. Vanmeter scares no one except….. Garrett.
Well …
People wouldnt listen when I was talking about AG = wandy 2.0
Hey hey Wandy got the save the other day. At least he is throwing strikes.
And Wandy’s slider breaks
WOW, don’t count on AG.
He didn’t really say what we should count on him for, you know
David Bell – no words !!!!!! Complete and utter clueless manager
You got that right!!! Does Garrett have something on Bell, and is blackmailing him maybe? That would be the only reason any sane person would make that move. Fire Bell!!!
Amir Garrett just isn’t the answer. You can see he is way to hopped up and aiming the ball.
Fire Bell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is the only person in the park that thinks Garrett can get someone out. No chance. And everyone knows it,..except Bell! I knew it as soon as he took Antone out and put him in. Knew 100% chance,..as did anyone who watches him pitch. Fire Bell now!!!
DID BARRY LARKIN JUST SUGGEST LEAVING GARRETT IN SO HE COULD HAVE A CHANCE TO EARN THE WIN?????
Terrible. Everyone watching could see exactly that coming….except David Bell
How many times must we see this particular movie?
I know I don’t like this show
Like watching a train wreck in slow motion! Trade Bell for a player to be named later!
For a manager to be named later.
I was wrong! Two (2) walks followed by a HR! Nice job AG and Bell. AG’s ERA now 16+
It’s time for all Reds fans to accept that as long as Bell is manager, the Reds aren’t going anywhere. Brewers have already won and we’ll be lucky if the Reds see 1st place again.
They will somehow have to figure out how to win despite their manager.
Well–this Reds fan has known that since the middle of his first season managing.
A lifelong Reds fan since 1960, yes 1960! Watching this team with Bell at the helm is like sitting on the lido deck of the Titanic! Iceberg? What iceberg!
He’s as bad or worse that Dusty “Bunt” Baker was!!! He should be fire,..just like Baker.
I hope Garrett has options left. He needs to find it at some other level. He could not have thrown van Meter a fatter pitch unless he just set it on a tee. Garrett said the closer job was his to lose before ST. I think its time to confirm that he lost it. His arm is not supporting his mouth.
Garrett should go sign his check over to Mahle for screwing up his masterpiece.
The game is in the bag and Garrett throws a gopher ball, he is not having a stellar start to the season.
Garrett needs sent to alternate site his pitching is abysmal
I knew it…Just like Dusty Baker got stubborn and had a man crush and a obsession with some pitchers and kept bringing them in over and over again, even though all of us knew they would be totally unreliable and cause the Reds to blow late leads, David Bell is doing the same! I just knew it….should have kept Antone in, and this thing would already be over with!
Yep. Francisco Cordero was Baker’s Garrett. He let him lose every game for a couple or three weeks straight after we were leading going into the bottom of the 9th. It’s called STUPID and STUBBORN!!! Like the Reds canned Baker, they should can Bell!!!!!!!!!!
I understand he has the Blue Checkmark … but it’s OK if Garrett changes his Twitter account name from “CountOnAG” … at least for the near term.
India needs to watch Blandino play defense and learn
My sincere apologies to India for saying Blandino plays better defense.
Garrett has been absolutely terrible all year and I am very tired of the “not enough” work excuse. Maybe he would get more work if he pitched better? He is obviously afraid to throw his fastball. His days as a closer should be over, he is #4 at best in the bullpen
We had that with Iggy Pop as well. This is a big reason why I don’t like the whole closer role thing.
Well I watched the A’s come back from 10-7 then 12-10 with 2 outs in the 10th to win their 11th in a row. Walkoffs are fun….lets do it!
But the narrative of “Every team lets their core players work thru their issues”
Absolutely not!!! Managers change batting orders all the time. The Marlins signed Anthony Bass to be their closer, but he stunk up the joint like 3x straight and he was replaced. Garrett is not Al Leiter. He’s not David Price where he can ride on some of his past achievements and laurels
Absolutely NOt!!! Bell’s job is to win baseball games. Period!!!
Again, +1,000
A’s manager(Melvin) is a free agent after this year. Every year he plays the guys who are given him and wins. Love to see him be the Reds manager.
Winning the easy isn’t interesting enough for Bell. He doesn’t get to show off how brilliant he is if he just leaves in a pitcher who’s getting everyone out and hasn’t thrown too many pitches.
*Winning the easy way
Garrett is laughably bad this year. Makes one wish JJ Hoover was the closer again.
Anyone want to bet against this game coming down to needing a Suarez hit in the 10th to tie it and he strikes out to end it again?
No bet.
Next lopsided game, let Amir throw his arm off. 2, 3 innings. The Reds need him to lock in.
Gary Sanchez was the best slugging catcher in mlb….now he bats 8th
Andy Benetindi was one of the Red Sox brightest prospects. He was batting 2nd for KC….now he bats 6th and 7th.
Core players never get touched or replaced…..nonsense!!! Bell is just afraid of confrontation….hurting somebody itty bitty feelings
C’mon Farmer! Win this
This is David Hernandez all over again two years later. Bell has learned nothing!!! Reds will go nowhere with this guy. Absolutely abysmal!!! Feel for Mahle. He pitched great only to have the manager waste his performance.
Reds management deserves as much as the blame as Bell. Refused to address shortstop and made the bullpen noticeably weaker over the off-season. Both are coming back to bite them at the moment.
Snap’em though. Hey Suarez you’re batting 7th. Hey Amir….walk a guy and go 2-0 on the next guy. You’re getting pulled mid=hitter. Take the walk of shame.
M A N A G E…….not M A S S A G E egos
While I agree with intent and feel your pain, I believe they still have that stupid rule where a pitcher must face a minimum of three (3) batters!
How about never play Suarez or Garrett ever again? Why?? Because dropping Suarez to 7th will not keep him from striking out 3 or 4 times per game. And Garrett can not throw a strike, much less get anyone out. Why pitch him at all? I’d give them both away, if anyone would be stupid enough to take them off our hands. I’d give them away, and pay their salaries if some other team would take them,..and then pay a good deal to boot to that team, if necessary. Why give them a chance? They’ve had unlimited chances. They’ve both more than proved what they do.
What in the heck is House thinking?
I don’t disagree with sending Payton there. Gotta put pressure on the defense, they could have made a bad throw
Barry’s analysis is sound there. “No reason to look back.”
agree
2 questions:
1. What is the all time record for most outs made on the base paths in MLB history?
2. On what date in May will we break that record?
2 outs Payton…why the heck he slow down at 2nd.
Demote
If that ball rolled 2 feet farther from Calhoun, this game is over.
It didn’t.
Payton held up?? I swear. We started off this season running the bases better, but that was the same old Reds giving away the winning run. Why are you pausing with 2 outs? May cost us the game.
Horrible base running, Payton. Two outs. What are you doing?
Baseball is a hard game. So many things to remember when you’re on the bases. “Where do I look? What am I trying to accomplish?”
That’s why they’re called professionals. They’re supposed to be expert at those things.
Horrible Blandino…no way he gets the guy at home…get the out
That’s two errors (the other by the Red Sparrow) by trying to one hand (or glove only) a simple play that any good infielder would make by simply catching it with your glove and then throwing the runner out with your hand. But no!!! They have to make a spectacular one hand (or glove only) play. Trouble is,..they committed two errors on relatively easy plays!!! They tried to hotdog it. That’s my Reds. Did I mention we have a genius for a manager?
I feel like I’ve been punched in the gut. Makes me sick.
You’ve got the “Bellism” virus. haha
Again, a train wreck in slow motion! Don’t know how a team can bounce back after knowing that they were three (3) outs from a shutout win if Antone was allowed to throw more than 26 pitches.
Now they are playing just like last year. This was a big mental blow to the team psyche.
Why was Fulmer lifted?
Bell
my bad…brain cramp…no reason to keep the 3rd best RP in
OK, I’m out. Maybe the morning will bring new hope, but I’m not counting on it.
Woof.
Reds were 96.6% favorites to win at the start of the 9th inning, according to FanGraphs.
Then … a comedy of errors … stiil happening into the 10th.
This is potentially cancelling out Saturday’s miraclous win.
Yes. But FanGraphs did not factor in that Bell is our manager. Everybody knew what he was going to do, and everybody knew how it would turn out. He’s the only person in the whole world that would make that move and lose this game.
Bell’s style of management, be nice to those struggling and give everybody some playing time, might be ok for the minors but not ok for the major league.
This is not Little League! Everyone does not have to play and everyone doesn’t get a trophy!
Just take the out? Yeah the run scores, but we start off with a man on 2nd too. Now we’ll probably give up more. Snakes 4-9 against everyone else and most likely 4-1 against us. Thats unacceptable. I’ve been sticking up for Bell somewhat, but when you can’t see what everyone else already knows then its the same old same old.
This game was over.
I wish Castellanos would stand in David Bell’s face, flex and yell.
That would be another two games.
Now thats funny and its a good place for me to leave.Too much of me gets caught up in a kid’s game and then I begin to act like one myself.I love the Reds but I can’t just watch this team any more.
I hear you, except I can watch the team, just can’t stand to watch its current manager
Well… we’re gonna go 1-5 against a team that won’t win 70 games… that sucks, but it happens that way some times. It’s a long season. Get back on track after tomorrow’s loss and beat some divisional rivals.
The first time I heard Sadak say “he makes the glove” rather than “he makes the catch,” I thought he misspoke. Now that I’ve heard it several times, I’m adding it to the list of annoyances.
Shutout on 2 hits thru 8 and now they’ll get 6-7-8 runs. Ridiculous. Bell is the Michael Scott of baseball. I hope they like me?
I think DB has expanded his need to use every position every game, to using every relief pitcher every game
Dude was swinging! It’s a strike!
Comedy of errors … still continuing.
High school manager and guys playing like high schoolers. It must be high school.
Including high school catcher that thinks he can scoop a ball in the dirt with bases loaded instead of breaking down on it like—well I take that back—a high school catcher would have broken down and blocked a pitch in the dirt with bases loaded.
Castellanos comes back tomorrow but Bell probably has him down for his “scheduled” day off.
Hilarious!
Well, yeah!
I mean he schedules those days off in advance and it would mess up his calendar.
I’m not kidding he used that excuse before about scheduling the days off in advance.
It’s bad when every random fan sitting on a couch could do a much better job than the guy in the dugout making in game decisions. I’m sick to my stomach that Bell lost this game.
At least the 3rd game this season where decisions he made cost the reds
Not sure how people can defend this much longer.
100%!!!! This loss is on Bell despite of the pathetic performance of the Reds bullpen except for Antone!
Bell’s the only person in the world that would make that move. And you know what the sad part is? If we are in the same situation tomorrow, he’ll do it again. And again! And again!! Worst manager I’ve ever seen. And I thought Bunt Baker was bad! He’s a genius compared to Bell. Fire him now!!! We have no chance to win with him managing,..if that’s what you call what he does.
The Reds may end up losing this game by 15 runs and all they had to do to win it by 3 was not remove the pitcher who was getting everyone out and hadn’t thrown very many pitches.
From what we’ve seen this year from Amir Garrett, how can anyone defend David Bell’s decision to pitch him in a save situation tonight?! What an embarrassment! This loss could completely demoralize this team. I’m not sure this team can win with David Bell as manager. I offer no apologies to any David Bell apologists!
Yes! Fire Bell!!!!!
The Reds are simply not talented enough to beat the other team and their own manager.
I’m afraid this game is the trend and not the outlier. This bullpen is atrocious.Bell’s management of it is even worse.
All on Bell – bush league managing at its best . Hasn’t learned ANYTHING from past experience . I mean nothing ! Dude ought to be fired before lights are turned off at GABP this evening. INEXCUSABLE !
Yes!!!
Castellanos “I’m just tired of losing”
Well you’ll have to move on son because what we do here. Vegetarians don’t work at McDonalds
Losing culture. No accountability. Baserunning error….no big deal. Cost us the game because you didn’t know you’re supposed to keep running with 2 outs. Its cool. Don’t sweat it
THROW. THE. BALL. OVER. THE. PLATE! There is nothing that makes a team more unwatchable than a bad bullpen. Every bit of joy and positivity that this team had a week into the season is gone, and its primarily due to AG and his inability to throw strikes early in counts. Imagine that, Garrett is actually the reason this team has lost its swag.
Too much talk from AG in Sp.Tr. about the closer role is mine to lose instead of simply getting himself ready to get the ball over the plate when the regular season started. Results (wins) are all that count.
If Bell still has a job tomorrow (and he will), the Reds front office/ownership group just isn’t concerned with winning.
My final post of the night! Again, the 2021 Diamondbacks play like the 1927 Yankees only against the REDS!
I believe after this loss the Reds are closer to last than first?
It just dawned on me that one of the only guys who hasn’t been used today was a pitcher who was on the roster specifically for this game. What was the point of adding him and not a position player if there were virtually no circumstances in which he could possibly be useful? This organization is just so stupid.
Of course things would happen differently, buy this is why Blandino not getting that out was a killer….huge mistake
3 runs right? Their guy makes a great play and our guy can’t get an out on a routine ball.
Antone pitched yesterday. He’s going to be out for a few days anyway. Whats wrong with 3 more outs? Bell always has to overthing everything. Borderline teams like the Reds, which most are, can’t take losses like this. This game was over.
Another perspective— leave Mahle in to face VanMeter, he gets out #3, then let Antone get the 6 out save. And let AG stay in the bullpen
He says count on AG. He doesn’t specify what we can count on him for. And now we fans know what we can count on him for.
Just like we know what we can count on David Bell for. Bell gotta Bell
And Antone was unhittable today as well. But let’s assume our “closer” who was just credited with the loss yesterday and had a 12+ ERA will not struggle.
Serious question, has Garrett put up a 0 yet this year other than the triple play by Votto? Even that inning he got smoked.
One more thing! Dbacks scored eight (8) runs on five (5) hits! Walks, HBPs and errors!
Okay… now’s my time to be negative:
-Amir Garrett is broken. IL him and let him work on it. He’s a big part of what we’re trying to do, but he can’t get anybody out right now – including the parade of AAAA no-names in the DBacks lineup.
-Eugenio Suarez is broken. Maybe the move to SS is hurting his plate approach. We need this guy to hit. If Moose is gonna miss time – Suarez should slide back to 3B.
Josh VanMeter homered against Amir Garrett… that spot should have been Archie Bradley’s, except we traded him for… Josh VanMeter.
I love Barry Larkin. He’s my favorite baseball player ever. I grew up watching him rake. But he is sub-Morgan-level drivel as a commentator. I’d rather listen to my drunk uncle. At least he’s funny. Truly bad.
Now, then… I’ve exorcized my demons… let’s get em tomorrow.
“ Josh VanMeter homered against Amir Garrett… that spot should have been Archie Bradley’s, except we traded him for… Josh VanMeter.”
Wow. The height of irony
Unfortunately, in one sense, what’s happening right now is exactly what David Bell wants I’m afraid. That is the we’re all thinking and talking about him. When it comes down to it he has to be in the limelight one way or another.
