Reds links and news

Nick Castellanos is back!

Earlier this week Nick Castellanos was scratched from the lineup after having a sore middle finger on his right hand. He’s missed the last three games because of it, but he’s back in there tonight.

Josh Osich is getting back his velocity

Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer notes that Josh Osich, who saw his velocity dip in the 2020 season, is starting to see things tick back up – with the lefty throwing 93-95 in his last outing.

The pitching prospects impressed on Thursday

While the start went to Sonny Gray on Thursday night, the Reds relievers were mostly of the prospect variety and many of them had strong showings. Over at RedsMinorLeagues.com I wrote about their outings and got into a little more detail with both Ryan Hendrix and Dauri Moreta.

Reds pitching prospects shine on Thursday night

Final: D’backs 5 – Reds 3

If it weren’t for Josh Rojas hitting two home runs and driving in five, the Reds would have won the game. But those things happened and the Reds lost. But we’re going to argue that Arizona took the cowards way out by rolling the bottom of the 9th inning with the bases loaded and just one out.

The Highlights

The pitching staff combined for eleventy-billion strikeouts in the game. Ok, that’s a slight exaggeration, but they did have 16 of them as a team. José De León had four strikeouts, and one bad pitch to Josh Rojas led to two earned runs. Matt Pidich struck out the only batter he faced in the game. Cam Bedrosian and Braden Shipley both struck out the side in their inning of work. Hector Pérez struck out two batters in his perfect 8th inning. Jesse Biddle came out for the 9th inning, which wasn’t originally scheduled to be played, and picked up the final two strikeouts of the night for the pitching staff in a shutout inning.

At the plate it was a good night for Nick Senzel, who went 2-3 with a double and a solo home run. Jonathan India hit an absolute laser beam opposite field home run, going 1-2 on the day.

Tyler Stephenson got the start at catcher on the night and went 1-2 with a walk and a run scored. Alfredo Rodriguez started at third base and played the entire game, going 2-4. Cheslor Cuthbert started at first and he too played the entire game, going 1-4. Dwight Smith Jr. came on late to replace Aristides Aquino and went 1-2.

The Next Game

There is no officially scheduled game for Saturday. The Reds do have a “B-Game” set for Saturday that will feature Wade Miley and Tyler Mahle before handing things over to the minor leaguers who will be playing a few innings beyond the work done by the big leaguers. The Reds will return to the field on Sunday afternoon at 3:05pm ET.

It’s on MLB.TV as well for those who live outside the state and dont get Fox Ohio.

All games that are on a tv station somewhere, except the national games carried on ESPN or Fox, will also be available on MLBtv.

Nice to see India getting a lot if time, or so it seems. Great hustle the other day going first to third.

It sounds like there will be a top of the 9th played tonight so the Reds can get all of their pitchers into the game. Free baseball!

I know its early but I’m impressed with some of these pitchers the Reds picked up. It will be interesting to see what hitters and pitchers make the team.

Bedrosian and Shipley with 3 strikeouts apiece…. Bedrosian looked downright nasty. I say see if you can get Bedrosian some action against the major leaguers and fast. To my eyes, that guy is legit. I thought DeLeon looked fine, but he still seems a bit too “deliberate”… he’s wound tight… but he does have some seriously nasty stuff. He needs to figure out ways to let the hitters get themselves out. His pitch counts will be a problem for awhile if he starts I think.

Looks like we’re getting a full 9-inning game tonight after all.

Just making things up as we go.

India playing v. Fairchild was cool to keep an eye on.

What an underwhelming last at bat that was…sigh…

Pitching was good enough but we don’t score unless we leave the yard.Same guys doing the same thing even in the spring when it doesn’t matter.Hope it changes when it does.
