News and Notes

Jesse Winker’s availability

Jesse Winker is still out of the lineup – he hasn’t taken the field since he left the game on the 10th with a back issue (tightened up). Manager David Bell said pre-game that Winker would test his back out before game 1 with the hopes that he’ll be available off the bench today.

Are we weeing a new and improved Luis Castillo?

There are some things going on this season for Luis Castillo that look different from the past few seasons, but is he really any different in 2020 than he has been since coming up to the Major Leagues in June of 2017?

Matt Bowman will have Tommy John surgery this week

Looks to me like as good of a defensive OF as we can run out there.

Let’s show Bauer some love and run support!!

    • docproc

Yep on the defensive outfield–our best 3.
And Garcia strengthens the infield defense.
Putting our best D out there for you, Trevor.

  2. RedsFan11

Brooms out now. Either to sweep the Pirates away and maintain a chance, or for Reds players to sweep up their locker as the season will be over.

  3. docproc

Barnhart has already earned his place in today’s lineup by blocking 5-6 of Bauer’s curveballs in the dirt in the first inning (with runners aboard).

  4. JB

Bauer has to be wondering if anybody can catch the ball when he pitches.

  5. Charlie Waffles

Bauer at 43 pitches after just 2 innings. He’ll need a couple or three 8 pitch innings coming up. However, 27 pitches for strikes and 4 K’s.

  6. RedAlert

Getting worked by worst team in baseball again. No excuse , none . Dudes can’t hit , pathetic .

Reds Baseball – Just Keep Watching, It’s Worse Than You Thought It Could Get

  8. SteveO

If Bell is managing the Reds in 2021, Bauer will not sign with the Reds

  9. oklaRed

If only Votto would contribute though. He is the problem(sarcasm)

    • Old-school

      Votto isn’t paid to contribute.
He’s paid to hit and lead this offense.

He’s a $25 million dollar replacement level player

      .219 batting avg
Obp league avg and 70 points below his career

      WRC+ 95- below avg

      fWAR 0

      • OklaREd

Yep, he was paid to lead and already earned that money. Problem is he is contributing as much as anyone lately who was paid to lead this year.

      • Old-school

Some creative semantic gymnastics . Joey votto , a $25 million dollar .219 Below replacement contributor

  10. JB

Feel sorry for Bauer. If this team could hit he would not be in this spot. 3 hits. Offensive Juggernaut.

  11. Woodrow

Tyler Stephenson. Bell gets to manage game two.

  12. Old-school

Garcia and Stephenson need to play. It’s not like Galvis and Barnhart are crushing ball. Young guns win it.

  13. Johnnie Sparks

Bell actually made the right call sending Stephenson up. Back to back rookies. Hopefully there in the 2nd game

  14. Aaron B.

That was my first time watching Stephenson hit and I felt the goose bumps before he hit it. That was a nice moment. He needs more ABs for sure, whether as DH or catcher or 1B wherever because this team needs offensive help.

    • Sliotar

IMO, Barnhart has zero business on this roster in 2021.

      But … he has a $3.75 million contract for 2021, and a $500,000 buyout for 2022.
      Casali is Arb 3.

Brantley has already hinted that Barnhart will be back “because of the expense of his contract.” (eye roll)

Stephenson should get every at-bat he can handle, with Casali giving him a break as needed.

  15. VaRedsFan

Cool beans with TySteve delivering a huge hit. I’ll have to give Bell credit for pushing that button.

Bauer was fantastic. Even the pitch Moran hit out (up and in fastball)…Moran had to be guessing to pull that pitch.

  16. Sliotar

Marlins about to beat Phillies (again).

Miami has played itself into a spot … nearly.
24-21 after today looks pretty good in NL.

Mattingly for NL Manager of the Year.

That would leave 2 spots from STL/MIL/Reds/Mets/Giants/Rockies.

Fun times … just need to keep winning and scoreboard watching.

  17. Mark Moore

Had to turn it off with us up 1 to go mow. Back on to see it tied and Bell taking the ball from Trevor. Got to see Iggy mow them down in the 7th and the Rookies pull out the win. Trevor was really happy with TySteve.

  18. Redsfandownunder

Cards playing two against the Brewers today – what is the best outcome are we hoping for to keep the Reds playoff hopes alive?? I’m guessing we want Brewers to lose both games?

    • Sliotar

One to beat the other decisively …

Brewers have 16 games left (including today) …. 10 vs. STL, 3 vs. Reds, 3 vs. KC.

Milwaukee feels vulnerable, IMO … I don’t know that we will a repeat of Craigtober, where the manager supposedly pulls wins out of thin air.

Phillies just put Rhys Hoskins on 10 day IL … so much talent, but Miami has passed them for 2nd in NL East.

    • Don

Have to root for Brewers to beat the Cards as many times as possible.

If the Cards get to 29 wins (29-29, which is 9-9 in their last 18), the Reds need to get to 31 wins to get 2nd in the division as a 30-30 finish losses the 1st tie breaker which is head to head record to the Cards )Reds 4-6 vs Cards).

If the Cards go 8-10 in their last 18 then the Reds only need 29 wins for 2nd place.

      28-30 is a .48275 win %
      29-31 is a .48333 win %

The Reds control their own destiny vs the Brewers with the 3 games left to overtake them for 2nd place.

For the Reds to have the best chance at 2nd place in the division, the Reds need the Cards to go 8-10 to finish the season (10 Brewers, 5 Pirates, 3 Royals)

  19. docproc

Neither TySteve nor Garcia in the starting lineup for Game 2.
A fine how do ya do.

    • Johnnie Sparks

For every correct move he makes 100 bad ones. U know disco gona give up 5 runs and u run this line up out. Wow. Garcia an Tyler need to b in the line up. I’m speechless again. David Bell an zac Taylor. Poor cin sports

    • RedAlert

So Bell brings worst reliever he has in 1 run game , with game only 7 innings , game you MUST WINT – complete idiocy

  20. Don

Great performance by Bauer, he was dominate.
He keep the team in the game until the Rookies won it.

Disco needs to not give up pitch just as well in game 2.

  21. Don

Moran pulled a Winker to cost the Pirates a run.

Maybe there is some luck for the Reds. Great defense and decision to go to 2nd by Akiyama.

    • RedAlert

Let Disco walk after this year- he ain’t that good and has really regressed

      • Mark Moore

Certainly no QO for him. That’s way above his range.

    • Mark Moore

OK, so the Rats LOST the challenge? In the first inning?

      Sweet

  22. Mark Moore

Sorry, but that’s on Nick for failing to see the pitch. Probably a hit-and-run, but that was WAY out of the zone.

    • Don

No way that is a hit and run on a full count.

Was a really bad swing. No need to try and steal there.

Reds need to help Disco, no hurt him with poor defense

Brewers beat Cards in game 1, which is one a good result for the Reds

  23. Sliotar

Lots of action in the first inning.

Disco can be shaky and Keller is just back off the IL.

Might be one of those games.

  24. Johnnie Sparks

Should b 1st an 2nd. Nick c doesn’t need to b batting second. His last 4 plus weeks has been tough to watch. If he didn’t have them first 3 weeks he would b batting like .130 on the yr. I hope he ops out. I see u there first choice was ozuna. Bell needs to get bullpen up only playing 7 innings

  25. VaRedsFan

Not good by Suarez. 95% of 3rd basemen can make that play. 100 % if it’s against the Reds

  26. Don

Suarez, that was a catcher running, why throw on the run, set your feet and throw it hard. really poor defense. Not helping the pitcher not hurt them.

  27. Don

Disco got 3 Ks to overcome 2 poor defensive plays

Suarez and Moose both need to have some offense in game 2 to make up for this.

  28. doofus

Suarez, once again proves why he is a very bad fielder. He is ridiculous.

It is apparent that he never works on the defensive side of his game.

  29. Mark Moore

Nice oppo there for Goodwin. And Geno’s patience give us a lead.

  30. Don

Goodwin 2 in 2 days to put Reds ahead.

  31. VaRedsFan

Great comment by Welsh on Goodwin’s HR. Swing smooth, and barrel it up, and it will go. Never a need to overswing. Big hit for BGood

  32. TR

Nice hitting by Goodwin. Went with the pitch. Opposite field dinger.

  33. Mark Moore

OK, who is this guy and what has he done with the Joey Votto we’ve seen up to this point?

    • Slicc50

I don’t know, but it would be HUGE for this team if he could keep this up!

    • Don

      He is home
      OPS (before today)
      home = 1.172
      road = 0.393

      Dr Jeckle meet Mr Hyde

    • Don

Votto is home. No clue why, seems to only play well at GABP in 2020.

      OPS (before today)
      home = 1.172
      road = 0.393

  34. Hanawi

Are we sure we want Castellanos to opt in for next season?

    • Slicc50

It would not break my heart if he opts out. He definately has shortcomings.

    • Slicc50

Personally, I won’t be heartbroken if he opts out. He is not irreplaceable

  35. Slicc50

Bell heating up nicely for the Bucs. Hopefully Reynolds doesn’t do the same!

  36. Wayne Nabors

I agree and I really wanted him,but I now im thinkin I would rather have less of a free swinger

    • Slicc50

I was super excited when they got him. I didn’t realize he was such a free swinger either. They need more diversity in their offense. Too many of the same kind of players, I guess? Need a couple of guys that are more consistent than streaky. Tough out kind of guys. If they can play some D, that would be a plus too!

  37. Old-school

Pretty clear reds plan is farmer back up middle infielder. Stephenson not playing at catcher becoming more and more dysfunctional.

Losing franchises lose for a reason

  38. Slicc50

sorry for the double comment. I am having trouble with the site tonight.

  39. Old-school

Reds are a great wonderful franchise

  40. Don

Ouch, that one hurts in this short game.

  41. Old-school

Why do comments with negative opinions to a losing franchise get moderated and blocked but wonderfulness go through?

  42. JB

I just got done saying the Reds are messing with dynamite after Fraziers single. Bell should have yanked him.

  43. Mark Moore

A see-saw game where the last team to score takes home the bacon.l

We win, a split over the next two days will be OK. We lose, we have to sweep out Tuesday and Wednesday or we’re back down at the bottom of the barrel.

  44. VaRedsFan

Why DeLeon over Bradley, who was warm? Don’t we want our best available to keep it at 1 run?

  45. Don

Why has Bell left in Disco. He is obviously done and he has sat down Bradley and getting up DeLeon in a 1 run game. Must be DeLeon’s turn to pitch from the bullpen.

No Stephenson, Sims, Hope DeLeon can get an out without more damage.

Does not seem like the best move.

  46. Sliotar

Giving Disco a third run through the Pirates lineup was a huge gamble.

The way this game is going … more runs are likely, from both sides.

But … only Iglesias was not available to relieve him. Again, huge gamble that, for the moment, did not pay off.

  47. Johnnie Sparks

Bell pushing his luck with disco. Has disco gave u any reason all yr to allow him to pitch the 5th. Should of went Bradley , a. g then Iggy. Theses moves really aren’t hard to figure out. Dnt think he’ll knows there playing 7 innings. Smh

  48. Slicc50

Man, Disco sure does look like a different guy from his first 2 outings.

  49. DK in Erie PA

This is why David Bell is a terrible manager. He needs to treat EVERY game like it’s game 7 yet he continues to manage like game 47 out of 162. No urgency at all. It was obvious to EVERYONE that Disco was done. Why warm up Bradley if he’s not going to pitch in that spot? To get Disco the win? Maybe he can get a participation trophy. The Reds are not very good, so every game that they have a chance to win you have to win it. These are the Pirates for goodness sake! They are awful. I can see why he brought in DeLeon (sarcasm)

  50. Slicc50

Come on, you have to have this game! There is no more time to be messing around. Have to get back to .500, have to do it NOW

  51. Don

cannot throw a strike and needs to stay in for 3 batters, fingers crossed that Reds get lucky and only give up one more run this inning.

  52. Woodrow

Malpractice. DeLeon has no business in a one-run, seven-inning long game. None.

    • RedAlert

Complete and utter failure by Bell – totally stupid move

    • Jrad4reds

Ya, nothing but lefties coming up and De Leon is our guy? Now sal Romano? We must be saving Amir for when we get the lead….smh.

  53. DK in Erie PA

Inflammation of the ERA is the injury

  54. VaRedsFan

Sal Romano???? Are they just letting Prasco handle this 1 run game in a must win situation?

  55. Woodrow

    Sal Romano? No.
Doesn’t make a difference how this turn out. No.

Had to be Bradley now, Stephenson defensible with one on instead of DeLeon.

  56. Don

Really Big Sal, 1st MLB pitches of 2020 in a 1 run game with bases loaded.

Even if it happens to work out, this sequence should be all that is needed to end the tenure of Bell. Have to let everyone in the bullpen pitch in a rotation, not matter the situation.

Wow, This is just very bad managing.

    • Don

Not putting players in a position to be successful.

      • Kywhi

Exactly right. How do you justify pitching De Leon and Romano In this “must win” situation? Thankfully, Romano prevailed after being put in brutal situation. Having been a serious fan since 1968, no Reds manager since has made me pull out what little hair I have left like David Bell. Can’t fire him soon enough for me.

  57. Old-school

Sal Romano in to save the 2020 season

  58. Johnnie Sparks

Y oh y is he bringing in these guys. I REALLY can’t take this anymore. The reds start each game down 3 runs do to his poor coaching decisions. It’s like a handicap in golf.

    • Don

Yes, Reds are giving up 2 stokes on a par 3 in a one hole playoff

  59. RedAlert

Got out of it , but BELL MUST GO ! Incomprehensible managing right there – just stupid

  60. Sliotar

    Sal Romano … Fireman.

Good grief … what a trainwreck of a season.

Still got 9 outs to salvage this thing … and the Pirates are truly awful.

  61. DK in Erie PA

As terrible as a team that they Pirates are (and they are) their announcers are even worse.

    • Sliotar

      100% agree.

And they a certain nastiness towards the Reds … like the Pirates are virtuous or something.

  62. DK in Erie PA

Runner on second no one out. Back to back whiffs. Seen that movie this year and know how it ends.

    • JB

Never happen. Bell is making every effort to lose this game .

  63. DK in Erie PA

WOW! Attaboy Moose!!! Now please, Bradley!!

    • Mark Moore

Remember we saw Bradley for 2 innings last night. Might get 1 out of him. But we had Iggy last night and tonight, so you don’t want to press your luck there either.

  64. Mark Moore

Way to go Moose!! And Shogo and Geno worked it to get on in front of him.

  65. JB

Once again Bells behind is saved again.

  66. Sliotar

    Well done Moustakas.

Get someone with a live arm ready to finish the bums off.

    • Mark Moore

And Shogo and Geno worked to get on in front of him.

I’m telling you, last team to score tonight.

    • slicc50

As Moose hit that one, I was typing up my criticism of Bell letting Moose, who is hitting .130 against lefties, hit there. Glad he proved me wrong!

      • Don

$64 million dollar man came through that time.

  67. vared

Nick Senzel pitching the 6th? Just kidding.

  68. Don

time for Bradley to prove he was worth the prospects

  69. Mark Moore

OK, got to do that 3 more times. Maybe a little more add on … please?

  70. slicc50

NICE Archie! That is exactly how you do it after your team gets that big 3 run blast!

  71. Don

way to go Bradley. 1 more inning to go.

Get a few more runs to put the game away.

  72. Don

bases load, no outs, top of the order.

Have to score 2 if not 3 this inning.

  73. Old-school

The whole bunt potential added to Casali at bat

  74. Slicc50

Mil beating the bad guys 2-0 in the 4th

    • Don

Yes they are, could be big night for the Reds.

    • Mark Moore

He’s figured things out. Think about him next season starting fresh with (maybe) a full season to play.

  75. Mark Moore

C’mon Casto … give us at least a fly ball SF!

    • Mark Moore

And there is no way he opts out of a guaranteed payday next season.

    • Mark Moore

When you try to murder every.single.pitch that’s what happens.

      • JB

5 hits. Nick’s was an error. So they are right on target again. .

  76. Don

    thank you Pirates.

Votto, it is time to get a few more.

Have put a hurt on the pirates bullpen for the next 2 games as well tonight.

  77. Mark Moore

Geno has to be salivating now.

Welch just said they should make the SS pitch.

  78. Woodrow

Can you hear it? That’s Nate Jones’ music.

  79. Mark Moore

Is Jones in for 2 innings at this point?

    • Mark Moore

OK … I keep forgetting this is a 7-inning game. Full-on Homer Simpson tonight.

  80. Don

    Yes Reds get the sweep,

    Hope is still alive.

  81. Mark Moore

Nice night … 14 good innings and on to tomorrow we go. Here’s hoping Mikey Biceps can give us 3 really good innings to get it rolling tomorrow.

    Good night, all!

    • Don

Sims has not pitched in 3 days either so hopefully both of them can give 3 or 4 solid innings while the offense score 5+ runs early.

  82. Tom Mitsoff

While you can’t call this a pennant race, it certainly is a playoff race. If the Brewers’ 2-1 lead in the fifth of game two of a doubleheader against St. Louis holds up, you’ll have the Cardinals one-half game ahead of both the Reds and Brewers for second place (and a playoff berth seeded somewhere between four and six). The Reds would be also one game behind San Francisco for the second wild card berth (eighth seed).

Two more against Pittsburgh, and then the if-you-make-it-you’ve-earned-it stretch: three against White Sox with best AL record, three against Milwaukee, and three against Minnesota.

We wanted a team that would win a division. While that possibility is all but gone, the next two weeks are going to be something else if the Reds can stay hot. Key hits like Stephenson’s and Moustakas’ homers really boost everyone’s confidence — team and fans alike.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Correction: If Milwaukee wins game two and sweeps St. Louis, those two teams will be virtually tied for second, with the Reds one-half game behind them both.
