The Cincinnati Reds (15-21) will look to rebound after last night’s loss to the St. Louis Cardinals (14-13) in the second game of their three game series. The Cardinals are sending a rookie to the mound to make his third career start with Johan Oviedo. Cincinnati will send out Tyler Mahle, hoping to get back on the correct side of the ledger.

Tyler Mahle

The 25-year-old will be making his 5th start of the season, and his 6th overall appearance. His control has taken a bit of a step backwards from where it was in 2019, but his strikeout rate is up significantly as he’s striking out 12.5 batters per 9-innings pitched in 2020.

2020 Splits

RHH 41 9 1 0 2 9.8% 41.5% .250 .317 .444
LHH 56 7 0 1 2 10.7% 26.8% .149 .268 .319

In another way that things just don’t make sense in 2020 for the Cincinnati Reds or their players, Tyler Mahle’s walked fewer righties and struck out significantly more of them than lefties, but righties have had far better results against him this season.

Johan Oviedo

The 22-year-old rookie has only pitched in two games in his Major League career. He has thrown 5.0 innings in both starts, and both came in the second game of double headers. In 2019 he spent most of his season in Double-A Springfield where he posted a 5.65 ERA in 23 starts that spanned 113.0 innings with 64 walks and 128 strikeouts.

2019 MINOR LEAGUE Splits

RHH 308 66 11 1 7 11.4% 24.0% .249 .350 .377
LHH 347 83 17 3 3 11.8% 25.6% .277 .370 .383

We’re looking at last years minor league splits because 10.0 innings in the big leagues this year just doesn’t give us any useful information. His splits weren’t that large. His groundball/flyball ratios were league average, just in case you were curious about that, too.

I would disagree with those who want more change and rotation. I want less other than Tyler Stephenson at catcher.

Get Senzel back and play every day 8 x Dh and Lf.

    Senzel cf
    Votto 2b
    Castellanos 1b
    Winker DH , occ lf
    Suárez 3b
    Moose 2b
    Stephenson C
    García SS
    Shogo LF or new guy

If a lefty …switch Dh for Davidson and put Winker in LF .

Need a regular offense for an identity and rhythm. The Reds haven’t had more than 4 guys qualify for stats in 2 years. That’s not a coincidence the offense is awful. Timing, rhythm, regular at bats , identity matters

      Substitution … smh
      Votto 1b
      Castellanos RF

No Dexter Fowler. Some sort of stomach illness that will sideline him for up to 2 weeks because the medicine he’s on lowers the immune system.

  3. Klugo

I feel like Goodwin was a good, savvy pick-up. I have to believe that Shogo now has until Senzel returns to convince people he belongs in a MLB lineup on a regular basis. If he doesn’t do that, I imagine he’ll be regulated to a bench piece for the year, maybe two.
I do give credit to the Reds FO for not sitting on their hands during this catastrophe we call the 2020 MLB season. Lineup changes, call-ups, DFA’s, trades. They are trying. The players have to get it done and they have to get it done in spite of a green manager.

  4. ClevelandRedsFan

Did the Reds just get a little luck the line drive foul ball by 2 feet and Goldy’s ripped liner right at Shogo?

    • JB

Mahler countered that by throwing the ball right down the pipe to Miller. Bad luck

  5. Mark Moore

I see the Flex-o-Zone is out again tonight …

  6. Mark Moore

That helps … much better start than last night. I’d already tapped out by now.

  7. Old school

Amazing to watch this horrific offense run out tucker Barnhart when they have a top15 pick catcher twiddling his thumbs . Wow

      • Old-school

        Barnhart is hitting .177

        The season is nearing over
Clearly reds aren’t committed to winning
They are committed to $3 million next year and Derek Johnson’s loyalty to his suddenly terrible staff who like tucker.

  8. Mark Moore

Really, really dislike The Neck Tattoo … can’t even begin to explain how much.

    • That that had had

Neck tat is a Reds killer and future HOFer

    • JB

Very bad route. I dont know why Bell would think Goodwin is better centerfielder than Shogo.

      • Melvin

Some stat somewhere said Goodwin is better. Never mind what we see.

  9. Mark Moore

    Thank you, Moose!!

    +500 for you

  10. Old-school

It’s time to stop taking about babip and Luck. This team is who they are and the record is what is says
    The players are bad

  11. Hanawi

Why is Shogo in LF and Goodwin in CF? Goodwin has been mostly playing LF and RF for the Angels (only 4 games in center), while Shogo has played 15 games in CF.

  12. Melvin

Don’t understand why we continue to move Aki over. He he is the best CF we have other than Lorenzen.

  13. Mark Moore

Looked like a shin-burger to Shogo

  14. Mark Moore

That takes the sting out of it for a little while.

    • That that had had

We need homers. Lots of homers

  15. Daytonnati

Tucker must read this site between innings? 🙂

  16. Melvin

Barnhart = our secret weapon. haha Shouldn’t be playing but we’ll take it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him so straight away CF.

    • Redsince55

Reds not winning with homers Rather have singles with runners in scoring position.

  17. JB

Hoping for once Bell gets somebody up in the bullpen now instead of waiting for Mahle to get into trouble. This game is huge for the Reds.

    • Melvin

haha To say that this game is huge for the Reds is an understatement. We could/should have said that about every game from the start. Just keep getting bigger.

  18. VaRedsFan

RIP Tom Seaver….Great person great player.

    • Mark Moore

Sad news … wasn’t that long ago he stopped all public appearances. One of the last of his kind.

  19. VaRedsFan

Another strong effective outing by Mahle.

    • JB

He needs to stay in the rotation when Miley comes back. This team needs Mahle next year and he needs to get more comfortable pitching.

  20. Mark Moore

Would not have guessed we’d get 7 innings from Mahle

  21. Mark Moore

Too close to take, Jesse. Too close to take.

  22. MK

How stupid using Aquino pinch running. Think he might be need later for a little power hitting? Where is Galvis or Farmer?

  23. Jack

Bell all about the lefty righty. Removing your best relief pitcher to get the matchup

    • JB

I think he was swinging for the fences across the street.

  24. Mark Moore

And we’ve got the Bad Iggy that tries to nibble … not what we need tonight.

  25. VaRedsFan

Had him struck out on the check swing,….awful Angel

    • JB

Isnt this the 2nd series in row the Reds get Angel?

      • VaRedsFan

Wonder if the umps are staying with the Central teams too? If that’s the case, we drew the shortest straw.

    • DaveCT

      Had him K’d twice …

      Iggy nails it. Nice work.

      • TR

After putting the lead run in scoring position with no outs.

  26. AZ Redman

Here we go again R Iglesias pitching to lose the game for us after a good game from Mahle. Man I am so done with this sorry excuse for a freaking baseball team. Please sell the team Mr. C so we get someone who will bring in better management from the top to the manager.

  27. Mark Moore

And Small Ball to cap the win!!

Nicely done, guys. Take tomorrow off and head for Pittsburgh.

  28. JB

As a man of the cloth I used up a few prayers there. Joey is the man tonight.

  29. Melvin

    Votto washed up?….I don’t think so. 🙂

    • VaRedsFan

I’m happy for him. I just wish he didn’t waste half of the last 2 seasons in the crouch

  30. Charlie Waffles

Good for Votto. An 0-4 night but hits the game winner in bottom of the 9th. That will help a little with confidence in the batters box.
