Juan Martinez (04/03/19).
Aristides Aquino (04/23/19).

The Perspective from the Old Recliner:

Over the past 3 weeks, 24-year-old second baseman, Josh VanMeter, slashed .351/.456/.716/1.172, supporting his 358/.446/.758/1.204 slash line for the season. The Reds obtained VanMeter via a 2016 Rule 5 Draft trade. This was the same Rule 5 Draft when the Reds drafted Stuart Turner. Although VanMeter produced just a .737 OPS through seven minor league seasons, Doug Gray provided a reasonable argument that the 2019 results at Triple-A might represent a breakout season for VanMeter rather than an outlier season. It’s still too early to develop any long-term expectations based on less than 200 plate appearances, but Josh VanMeter has garnered a lot of attention this season.

The Perspective from the Old Recliner:

Over the past 3 weeks, 23-year-old first baseman, Ibandel Isabel, slashed .254/.301/.597/.898, augmenting his .268/.322/.573/.895 slash line for the season. Isabel’s power (.305 ISO) represents a reprise of his 2018 power (.308 ISO) from High-A Daytona. His power is real. His plate discipline and strike out rate represent the 800-pound gorilla in the room. Isabel stuck out in 36.3% of his plate appearances during 2018 and that result worsened to 42.2% during the 2019 season. Isabel could very well be an all-or-nothing anomaly, capable of producing tremendous power results at every level, but very few hitters have achieved success at the major league level with a 40% strike out rate.

One Response

How does Packy Naughton maintain an ERA below 3.00 with a WHIP OF 1.99? With a walk rate barely over 1/9 innings, he would be averaging surrendering almost two hits per inning. Long term that cannot translate into a sub 3 ERA.
