David Price just signed with the Boston Red Sox for $217 million over 7 years. $31 million AAV. Nothing deferred. Opt out after 3 years.

Two quick reactions:

— That’s the contract Aroldis Chapman would have signed when he was a free agent if he had become a starter. Oh, and Chapman will hit free agency two years younger than Price did. Instead, Chapman will be lucky to sign for half that to be a closer. Not that anyone should feel sorry for a guy being paid $100 million to pitch 40 important innings a season. That’s a good job if you can get it. But the comparison of the contracts drives home how much more valuable he’d have been as a starter for the Reds.

— Still think Homer Bailey got paid “ace money”?
