The minor league regular season has now come to a full close.  This week we’ll see how each of the three playoff teams fared in the post season.  Then we’ll see who was the best hitter this season for each team.

AAA Louisville Bats

I’m giving the nod for the Bat’s best hitter to 25 year old OF Steve Selsky.  Selsky put up a .317/.386/.428/.814 slash line in 202 PA.  He suffered a season ending knee injury which most likely cost him a trip to the major leagues due to all the Reds injuries this season.  Hopefully Selsky fully recovers and returns to Louisville next season hitting as well as he did this year and gets that call up.  Honorable mentions here to Brennan Boesch (.825 OPS in 208 PA) and Eugenio Suarez (.786 OPS in 238 PA).

AA Pensacola Blue Wahoos

The Blue Wahoos lost 3 games to 0 in a best of five game series against the Biloxi Shuckers in the Southern League playoffs.

The best hitter for the Blue Wahoos this year was 21 year old OF Jesse Winker.  Winker had a .282/.390/.433/.823 slash line in 526 PA which no other player on the team with significant PA could come near.  Winker started out slow, but had a torrid 2nd half of the season with a .316/.426/.516/.941 slash line.  He should start the year in AAA Louisville next year and if he continues to hit he will make his major league debut next season as well.

High A Daytona Tortugas

After the Tortugas defeated Clearwater two games to none in a three game series, they then lost 3 games to 1 in a best of five game series against the Charlotte Stone Crabs for the FSL Championship.

The Tortuga’s best hitter this year was 22 year old SS/2B Alex Blandino who had a .294/.370/.438/.808 in 342 PA.  He also put up a decent .235/.350/.374/.724 line in 138 PA at AA after being promoted.  Blandino should start next season back at AA where he ended the season and should see AAA if he continues producing.

Low A Dayton Dragons

The best hitter in Dayton this year was 23 year old OF/1B Brian O’Grady.  O’Grady had a .271/.385/.450/.835 slash line in 305 PA.  He also had a decent .210/.313/.341/.653 line in 161 PA after a promotion to Daytona.  He will most likely start next season back at A+ Daytona with hopes of hitting well there and ending the year in AA.  Honorable mention here to 2B Shedric Long (.836 OPS in 173 PA).

Rookie Billings Mustangs

The Mustangs lost 2 games to 1 in a best of three game series against the Missoula Osprey in the Pioneer League playoffs.

Almost too close to call here, but I’m going to give the nod to 21 year old SS Blake Trahan who had a .312/.400/.403/.803 slash line in 216 PA.  He also had a .253 OPS in 36 PA at A+ Daytona.  Trahan should start the year out next year as the SS at Dayton.  Honorable mentions here to OF Dalton Carter (.828 OPS in 103 PA), OF Ed Charlton (.804 OPS in 215 PA), and OF Kevin Garcia  (.802 OPS in 213 PA).

Rookie AZL Reds

The AZL Reds best hitter this year was 22 year old 1B James Vasquez.  Vazquez far outpaced his teammates with a .359/.415/.669/1.084 slash line in 164 PA.  Vasquez is old for this league and I would expect that he would start out next year at A Dayton.

I’m encouraged by the Winker and Blandino numbers. The Reds need offense, especially from the outfield and I suspect that’s more likely to come in trade for surplus pitching with the exception of Winker. Nice to see several Reds affiliates in the playoffs too.

It was good to see Winker, Blandino and Ervin showing good plate disipline at AA.
