The Cincinnati Reds (51-66) are looking to stop a four game losing streak in this final game of a two-game series against the Kansas City Royals (72-46.) The Reds have now been outscored 13-2 by the Royals through three games this season.

Jeremy Guthrie 5.63 5.15 1.4 6.5% 11.1%
Keyvius Sampson 3.18 4.11 1.1 10.0% 21.4%

Jeremy Guthrie tossed six shutout inning against Cincinnati on May 20th. That was the only 2015 start where Guthrie has held his opponent scoreless.

Keyvius Sampson is looking to build upon his promising start as a member of the Reds rookie rotation. He’s yet to make it past the 6th inning in his first three major league starts, but he’s also yet to allow more than three runs in any start.

The Royals lineup moves Ben Zobrist into second base from left field. Salvador Perez is getting a night off behind the plate, and Jarrod Dyson gets the start in left field, batting 9th behind the pitcher:

  1. Alcides Escobar (R) SS
  2. Ben Zobrist (S) 2B
  3. Lorenzo Cain (R) CF
  4. Eric Hosmer (L) 1B
  5. Mike Moustakas (L) 3B
  6. Alex Rios (R) RF
  7. Drew Butera (R) C
  8. Jeremy Guthrie (R) P
  9. Jarrod Dyson (L) LF

With Billy Hamilton on the disabled list, there was a lot of shuffling to tonight’s Reds lineup. Marlon Byrd has the night off, and Tucker Barnhart takes the start behind the plate.

  1. Jason Bourgeois (R) CF
  2. Eugenio Suarez (R) SS
  3. Joey Votto (L) 1B
  4. Brandon Phillips (R) 2B
  5. Jay Bruce (L) RF
  6. Todd Frazier (R) 3B
  7. Tucker Barnhart (S) C
  8. Skip Schumaker (L) LF
  9. Keyvius Sampson (R) P

Steve with the roster moves announced earlier today. Sam LeCure is back with the Reds for the first time this season.

Let’s focus on positive news, where someone did something nice for a child. A five-year-old fan of the Baltimore Orioles got to throw out the first pitch to yesterday’s O’s versus A’s game with her custom made, 3D-printed robotic hand.

Hailey’s hand is based on the Flexy-Hand 2 project, and anyone can download plans for the customizable hand on Thingiverse, a site for discovering and sharing 3D-printed objects. The UNLV engineering department customized the Flexy-Hand for Hailey’s needs and size.

The Reds pitching, overall, has been better since the trade deadline by allowing 3.7 runs per game in August compared to 4.4 runs per game through the end of July. They need the offense to get back on track and finally hit Guthrie this time around to stop their current losing skid.

Kind of a bummer that Perez will be out. I’m going and would love to see him catch in person, especially from lower seats than I usually have. It all might not matter though. There is some unfavorable weather coming in and honestly, I don’t like the chances for getting this one in tonight.

  2. lwblogger2

Jason Bourgeois has to lead off of course. He’s pretty fast you know. Nevermind that he hits about as well has Hamilton.

    • jdx19

Welp, at least Skip isn’t batting leadoff!

      • Vicferrari

Why is hitting so low in the order, every knows he is the ideal 2 Hole hitter and I did not think LFers were allowed to hit 8th

  3. Morgan Mayham

Not like he would play but why not adam duvall instead of boesch

    • jdx19

I’m guessing because Boesch makes money. The front office maybe wants to try and salvage what is left of Boesch. Maybe he’ll hit something on this stint in the bigs.

    • Vicferrari

Were you not paying attention in March? Boesch tore it up at Goodyear

    • Vicferrari

What is the point of sending Axelrod down, get out of base loaded jam with no outs, go to Louisville, getting pounded all those other times in long relief… that is OK.
I guess the bullpen is pretty taxed with the 1 inning they each have thrown over the past 2 and 1/2 days or so

      • pinson343

After last night, I wanted to see Mattheus sent down or out.

  4. james garrett

Walt wants to punish Boesch again by letting him set on the bench.

  5. msanmoore

+10Million to UNLV for that hand. Great story.

Now on to baseball in the Queen City … if it stops raining.

  6. seat101

Such a wonderful world we live in! That story about the little girl is just amazing, isn’t it?

I’m at work any idea of whether or not they’re going to start the game?

    • Shchi Cossack

It doesn’t look promising. They are not even speculating on a possible start time and that’s not a good sign. Chad must have the game summary for this game…

    • Shchi Cossack

Tarp is off the field and projected first pitch 8:45 p.m.

      • ohiojimw

if there isn’t lightning nearby, they are probably going to slog through long enough to get in an official game with a winner.

  7. mtkal

Good to see Phillips hitting clean up with all the extra base hits he’s been pounding out this season. 😉

  8. Steve Mancuso

Looked like a bad call on the triple. Ball clearly bounced well in foul territory. Would have to be severe curve to have been fair over the base.

    • jdx19

Yeah, when the chalk kicked up on the initial hit, it almost looks like the ball kicks into fair territory with monumental spin and then spins back… at first I thought “No way,” by physics… but after seeing the 2nd review I think they may have gotten it right.

      • jdx19

But either way, just more BABIP luck for the Royals. Last time I’ve checked, they have been fairly lucky this year.

  9. jdx19

I guess there’s the reason why you shouldn’t nibble when you get a guy 0-2. Now he’s in and the Redlegs are down 1-0…

  10. VaRedsFan

awful call…never is that ball called fair. Of course FSO camera angles are bad…

  11. jdx19

Thom is about to lose his mind with Hosmer’s RBI streak. Not too hard to get RBIs with guys standing on 3rd.

      • jdx19

I knew something like that would come!

      • VaRedsFan

You gave me the layup, I had to take it

  12. VaRedsFan

How serious is Billy’s injury? Prognosis?

  13. james garrett

Anybody think we will give our rookie pitcher any run support.

    • jdx19

Yeah. For some reason I feel like these rain delay games at home lead to some decent scoring.

  14. jdx19

Nice AB to begin the game there for Jason.

  15. RedAlert

Do the Reds EVER practice any BASERUNNING SKILLS !!!! It’s truly unbelievable how bad this team continues to be on the base paths – my gosh !!!!

    • RedAlert

But then again , when nobody is held accountable for anything on this team , what does it really matter …

  16. VaRedsFan

ugly pickoff. again not a good camera angle to even think about a challenge. This is a recording.

  17. james garrett

Maybe I should ask again if anybody thinks we will give our rookie pitcher any run support?

  18. jdx19

DIdn’t see the bat flip from Votto until the replay there before the commercial break. I like the flair… especially against these Royals that overflow with “flair.”

  19. Steve Mancuso

Jeremy Guthrie is the worst starting pitcher in MLB. He has the worst xFIP, the second-worst ERA and the worst strikeout rate. I have no idea how he is still pitching for a team like the Royals. Not saying the Reds will score more than their two runs (Guthrie did shut them out earlier this year) but man, this should be batting practice.

Guthrie has worse stats than Jason Marquis did.

    • jdx19

That is pretty surprising. A team that goes out and gets Cueto and Zobrist and they can’t replace Guthrie…

    • Evan armstrong

And yet the defending AL champs and I believe winningest team in the AL so far this season keep running him out there…Thier management must be idiots…

  20. Steve Mancuso

Mark Sheldon just said on the radio broadcast that Aroldis Chapman told him last night he felt rusty after not pitching for six games.

Price says if you use Chapman on nights when there’s no save, what if Chapman is needed the next three nights? That’s beyond terrible.

Are these Reds really a serious threat to win three games in a row?

    • jdx19

Price…not, in fact, a rocket scientist.

      • jdx19

More than likely he would not qualify as a scientist of any kind.

    • vegastypo

This is the same Price who wouldn’t use his ‘long man Cingrani’ in April for an inning or two because a game might come along when he is needed to pitch three or four innings. … Always nice to see a guy manage for tomorrow, no matter the effect on today.

      • jdx19

Exactly. There is nothing Price could ever do at this point to convince me he is anything other than a terrible manager which is incapable of winning with all but the best teams.

      • VaRedsFan

I guess nothing rubbed off being in the same dugout as Bochy during the All Star game

    • jessecuster44

When was Chappy ever used three nights in a row by Price?

    • jessecuster44

Attention Price apologists (you know who you are): Now would be a good time to attempt to defend the decisions of your man.

      • Evan armstrong

Until Price has a fully healthy roster its not fair to judge.

      • D Ray White

Says the self appointed King of the Front Office and Manager apologists. All teams have injuries, no matter the sport. The Cardinals have had arguably worse injury luck than the Reds. Despite that, Matheny seems to make a fair few good decisions. Can we not judge him either?

      • jessecuster44

You are essentially saying that it is OK for Price to make bad decisions with the bullpen because the Reds are dealing with injuries.

Name one team in the past century with a fully healthy roster. Take your time.

“Price says if you use Chapman on nights when there’s no save, what if Chapman is needed the next three nights? ”

It is completely fair to judge this statement, regardless of the health of the roster.

Keep bending over backwards to excuse Price’s incompetence. It’s funny. Or maybe just lie back and enjoy the rest of the season with Price.

  21. jdx19

Escobar has reached base twice after being down 0-2. He’s living right.

  22. james garrett

Price has to go.He always says something that makes no sense to anybody except him.Its comical to even listen to him most of the time and most of the time I don’t.

    • Evan armstrong

So because you don’t understand it then it must be wrong?

  23. CP

    I can’t take it anymore.

    • Steve Mancuso

Recommend volume off. The radio broadcast, if you can get it, is Brennamen-free this series.

      • CP

Volume has been muted, but am now watching Doctor Who on my laptop. I’ll pause and unmute to watch Joey, Todd, and Jay hit.

  24. jdx19

Well, we just have to hit 2 more homers in the bottom half. No big deal, Keyvius.

  25. james garrett

Frazier doesn’t know how bad Guthrie really is

  26. jdx19

Since the start of 2014, Skip has accumulated -2.4 WAR, which is 2nd worst in the majors (min 400 PAs). He has been the 6th worst batter, while also providing bad defense and below-average baserunning.

How this guy keeps getting playing time is the mystery of our age.

    • jdx19

Also interesting is that since the start of 2014, Joey Votto has been the 11th best hitter in MLB (153 wRC+). This includes his injury plagued 2014 season where he batted .250.

      • jessecuster44

Out of the top 10. Clearly not elite.

    • Steve Mancuso

He was on Jocketty’s last Cardinals team. Along with a bunch of other guys who have gotten their last contracts from their former GM now with the Reds. WJ is like the guy searching for his car keys only under the lamp post because that’s where the light is.

    • vegastypo

So, Skip gets lots of pinch hits, but basically stinks when asked to play an entire game…… ……..The Reds had Heisey, who could get pinch hits, and occasionally show some power, and play some defense, but he got run out of town. I just don’t get it…..

And I have this nagging feeling that Walt will bring Grit back, just because of his pinch hits.

      • jdx19

Yeah. And the sad thing is the FO doesn’t understand that anyone can do well as a PH in a small sample size. Give Skip 500 PHs and he’d be terrible, because he’s a terrible hitter. How people who are ‘baseball professionals’ dont see this stuff is mind-boggling.

  27. james garrett

I laughed out loud on that one Steve and my wife ran in thinking I wanted something. That one is priceless(no pun intended)

  28. RedAlert

If Price has already penciled in Cozart as starting SS next year ( per Thom ), he’s a bigger idiot than I thought-

    • RedAlert

I don’t care where Suarez plays , but his bat HAS TO BE in the lineup on almost a daily basis next year

    • Vicferrari

I think the rule is mute Thom…I would suspect if you break the rules the next step is to ignore anything he says if you do actually hear him

  29. RedAlert

Sampson is done Price – how much more you gotta see ???!!! for a dude that’s a pitching mind ,Price has no clue whatsoever when to make a move , absolutely none

    • Evan armstrong

What is the harm in letting him stay in and work things out?

      • RedAlert

Work it out ??? Really ??? 93 pitches in the third , first 2 men on , , lucky to still be a 1 run game ….. Need any more reasons

      • Evan armstrong

The game has no meaning W or L wise at this point…no game here on out matters if we win or lose, its about evaluations here on out.

      • RedAlert

How much more evaluating do you have to do Evan
to know that Sampson doesn’t have it tonight ???

      • Evan armstrong

Let’s see how he handles that problem, again winning or losing isn’t important at this point is it?

    • RedAlert

And brings on Villarreal – have mercy

      • Evan armstrong

I have zero knowledge of whom to bring in, because like u I am just a fan with no experience in managing and no relationship with the players. Our job is to watch and enjoy..

      • Vicferrari

Villareal is the obvious choice, success at going multiple innings in long relief and did not pitch yesterday, if game gets ugly go to Lecure and then Matheus

    • RedAlert

Sorry – winning is always important to me – I understand the need to evaluate players , but you play the game to win . These guys get paid millions of dollars to go out and play a game to earn their living. So yes , winning will always be important to me as a fan and in anything else I try to accomplish. I won’t always win in what I do or what I compete in. However, I will never , ever say winning is not important. That goes for anything a person tries to do in life.

  30. RedAlert

I’ll give the guy credit – nice job

  31. Steve Mancuso

Great job by Pedro Villarreal to get Moustakas. Cutter that looked like a tough strike then broke off the plate.

  32. D Ray White

Pedro, for all the grief he catches, has been serviceable. Similarly to former whipping boy Logan Ondrusek, Villarreal is prone to the random full on dumpster fire. Other than that, he’s okay. It’s doubtful he’ll ascend higher than bottom of the pen. However on a team like this one, he’s a serviceable placeholder until the younger arms fill up the pitching staff.

    • RedAlert

      That’s a good analogy – well said

  33. VaRedsFan

That ball hit the wall….how can the announcers say that is a catch?

    • VaRedsFan

the padding clearly looked like it wrinkled when the ball hit it…imo

  34. Austin

Final angle clearly showed it hit the wall.

  35. RedAlert

don’t even know what to say any more –

  36. Indy Red Man

Bourgeois having a rough night on the bases.

  37. Jason

What the heck did I just watch? Is this Major League Baseball? TOOTBLAN would be an understatement.

  38. VaRedsFan

The Bruce popup with 1 out and bases loaded gets hidden by Jason B Blunder

    • Indy Red Man

Not by me it doesn’t!! I can’t believe I was glad they didn’t deal him. He’s rewarding Walt for not dealing him by Bruceing it in fine style in August. 6-54 (.111) now since August 5th? The guy just can’t stay out of these long cold streaks. If he has a 1 or 2 fer-week then maybe Price should sit him down for 2 games next time because he doesn’t just have a bad series or a bad week.

  39. VaRedsFan

Back to back nights with mental errors reflects on the poorly on the coaches.

  40. wildwestlv

Saw on that Grit will be in the Chatting Cage on Friday. Maybe some fan can ask him what’s wrong with this lineup.

  41. Indy Red Man

Sammy!! He’s a wizard when he’s on! The backup fastball and the big curve. I hope they get him a W tonite!

  42. RedAlert

Boesch picking up right where he left off last time he was up

  43. RedAlert

16 games under – simply unacceptable – Price gotta go
