Gulp 1  The Reds announced that Raisel Iglesias would take Johnny Cueto’s start on Sunday. Later, they tweeted that Cueto has been suffering from “general stiffness” since his start in Kansas City (yes, the start after which he said he had done his job and was waiting for the rest of the team to do theirs).

If anyone has a theory as to what “general stiffness” is in a 29-year-old professional athlete, please let us know. Some deep obfuscation (no accident that fancy word includes a B and an S) there by the Cincinnati Reds.

Gulp 2  Devin Mesoraco isn’t in today’s lineup. So much for taking advantage of him as a designated hitter in AL cities. Instead, you’re getting Skip Schumaker and Brennan Boesch today. Jay Bruce (who is a far better OF than either of those two) is the DH. Keep in mind the Reds just had a day off on Thursday. That was the day before yesterday.

Mesoraco has now missed two games where he could have DH’d. Hard to see the glimmers of optimism about him returning to catching that were circulating Reds officialdom this week. We’ve said all along, Mesoraco is heading for season-ending surgery. Bone spurs don’t disappear, they get scraped away with arthroscopic surgery.
