The Cardinals and Reds prepare for another heated tilt. Both teams haven’t played the way they would like to this point of the season. However the Cardinals have started playing better and now find themselves just 1.5 games out of first while the Reds continue to be stuck in neutral thanks to injuries and poor hitting. But with all that said, the Reds are just a small winning streak away from getting everyone all excited again. I’ve been saying it for weeks now: What better time to start a streak than now!?

The Reds face Shelby Miller who has been real good thus far this season. Homer Bailey has been up and down this season. Bailey was not good in his last start so let’s hope he comes back up today and shuts down the Cardinals.

Discuss the game here, Reds fans! Go Reds!

Like it! Feels just a tad like an Opening Day. Time for a fresh start and get this team on a roll. Homer is beyond due and I’m sure he is well aware of it.

  1. al

Describing Bailey’s performance this season as “up and down” is being pretty generous. Here’s hoping this is when he turns it up for good.

    • Steve Schoenbaechler

I still can’t help thinking I would never have given him that much money. With how the contract seems to be back loaded, I can’t help thinking the FO may have decided that Homer may be gone as soon as Stephenson or someone else is ready.

      • al

The problem with that is that back-loading it makes it that much harder to trade him down the line. I think if they were planning on moving him, they would have had it been more even.

I agree in general though, I think we paid the wrong pitcher. I like Latos’ youth and track record more. I like Cueto’s track record more, and if they had tried to sign him last off season, they may have been able to get a big discount. Forget about that now.

      • charlottencredsfan

4+ months left in the season and JC doesn’t have a stellar record of finishing one healthy. Maybe a little premature to say, “Forget about that now”.

  2. jdx19

Love tonight’s lineup. Only a JV would make it better!

  3. wildwestlv

Nice feature on Billy Hamilton on MLB Network.

  4. wildwestlv

MLB (mini)CAVE? Lol. I do the same, often. I love MLB.TV

    • charlottencredsfan

Me too but dang Brew-Crew is up 1-0 at Miami.

      • charlottencredsfan

I think God himself came up with MLB.TV.

    • charlottencredsfan

The whole second floor of my house is MLB Cave (lol).

DP! Very nice 1st inning HB.

  5. mwvohio

Might be an interesting night if Bailey can locate his off speed pitches.

  6. wildwestlv

Harold Reynolds picked the Cards, tonight. I’m always weary on the wisdom of Harold Reynolds.

  7. Steve Mancuso

I’m in section 121 tonight. Second row. Good view of the plate. Big crowd. Beautiful weather. Now we just need a win!

    • charlottencredsfan

Bring one back. Homer is looking really good.

    • wildwestlv

Can we see you on the TV? Are you wearing Redleg Nation swag?

  8. charlottencredsfan

Miller will get his pitch count up there pretty quickly if you let him. Just saying.

  9. charlottencredsfan

    Brewers 1, Stanton1 in Miami.

  10. wildwestlv

If Bruce goes 0-for the first game back from surgery, will Marty still berate him?

    • charlottencredsfan

I think he will spot him a couple of games.

    • jdx19

I think you know the answer to that! 😉

  11. jdx19

This has the feeling of a 1-0 or 2-1 game.

  12. RedAlert

Homers fastball has no movement > straight as a string

    • mwvohio

He’s mixing speeds a lot more tonight though, it’s a little odd how much off-speed stuff he’s throwing particularly against a team that usually knows how to hit the other way. That said, it’s working right now.

      • RedAlert

Yep – he’s got good heater , but indeed better mix em’ up

  13. charlottencredsfan

Cards are probably happy they already have a hit given Bailey’s history. He is dealing through 3. Go Homer Go.

  14. charlottencredsfan

Hamilton catches that ball with ease.

  15. sergeant2

Any inside info on what was said when Price gave the players a kick in the butt in the dugout during the Nats game.

    • wildwestlv

BP said he, “…got all in our butt & it felt good, in a good way. You know what I’m saying?” So. Yeah.

  16. charlottencredsfan

Wanted no part of BHam. (Smile)

  17. charlottencredsfan

Steve & CP – That SB is not reflected in WAR or xRC?

    • Steve Mancuso

No. But it also didn’t mean anything.

      • charlottencredsfan

It’s a positive, near all singles mean zero. So let’s put a + on that. Okay? Fair is fair, if he gets caught stealing we will give him a -. Remain objective and I will. Let’s get to the truth Steve, that is all I ask. The road leads where it goes. Great game huh?

    • CP

Steve is incorrect. SBs are a component of wSB, which when combined with UBR, makes up “Baserunning”, aka BsR. BsR is a component of fWAR.

  18. RedAlert

Go get that one off the wall punk !!!!

  19. charlottencredsfan

That Frazier kid just might work out.

  20. Aaron Bradley

Beautiful. Hey no disrespect for Brantley I love the guy, but Kelch is adding major professionality to this broadcast. I think he needs to stick around.

  21. Ohioindiaspora

the Todd-Father strikes again! GO Reds!

  22. Michael Maffie

For anyone who is wondering: Frazier is 28 and the Reds have him for four years. I’m liking what we have at our hot corner. (edit: we have him through 2017; four years including this one)

    • sergeant2

I didn’t know what Frazier’s status was contract wise, good to know he’s to be here for awhile.

      • sergeant2

Meant to say “going” to be here. (I said “going” in my mind, but my fingers didn’t get the memo. I hate when that happens)

  23. RedAlert

Can’t stop here on the Cards – Homer needs a clean inning

  24. jas428

Did Latos gain weight? Thought I saw him on bench.

  25. wildwestlv

LOL. MLB NETWORK did a “game simulation”, using some baseball video game. It had Ludwick crushing one (I think in the 4th) to spot the Reds to a 6-1 win. Whatever.

  26. Steve Schoenbaechler

I was just thinking before Frazier’s HR that, if Hamilton can get on base, that may increase some fastballs that Frazier would see.

    • Michael Maffie

Votto mentioned the same thing earlier in the season. Although I think Frazier’s HR was due to good hitting. Hamilton had already stolen (defensive indifference? its hard to tell when he’s that fast) second base. Frazier was ahead in the count and it looked like he was anticipating a fastball in that situation.

  27. Steve Schoenbaechler

Can’t play safe with these Cards. They can get 3 runs themselves real quick real easy or a little at a time.

    • RedAlert

Just disappointing from Bailey – dude just doesn’t know how to pitch with a lead – especially this year

    • charlottencredsfan

Guy is sporting a 5.44 ERA coming in, so be gentle with them.

    • charlottencredsfan

5.44 ERA coming in, so be gentle with them. Nice recovery by HB there.

  28. charlottencredsfan

Just have to stop it right here.

  29. AD

We’ve seen this before….many many many times.

  30. RedAlert

Get the freaking bullpen going – wheels about to come off

    • Michael Maffie

Bailey was ahead 0-2 in the count and got the hitter to pop-up. That’s not luck, thats good pitching. Was the Peralta K also luck?

  31. sergeant2

If, if I say, Homer can get out of the inning without giving up anymore runs, he might just get in a nice groove for the remainder of the game. He has been known to do that. Go Reds!

  32. wildwestlv

Nice having Bruce (& his arm) back in RF. “Get your @ss back there…”

    • charlottencredsfan

A couple of seasons ago that may have very well turned into a nightmare. Way to work through it Homer!

    • wildwestlv

If there is, Homer needs to eat it. Mesoraco > Tucker Barnhart.

  33. Vicferrari

what happen with wong’s AB, Gameday had the 1st & 3rd ball right over the plate

  34. charlottencredsfan

Mil 3, Mia 1 in the 3rd. Yuck.

  35. wildwestlv

Anybody else imagine the Six-Million-Dollar-Man sound effect, when Bruce was running that?

  36. charlottencredsfan

    Welcome back Mr. Bruce!

  37. Kurt Frost

How many times has Homer allowed runs this year after the reds gave him the lead?

  38. charlottencredsfan

Come on fellows, let’s have a big inning.

  39. VaRedsFan

Funny…Bruce held at 3rd as he should have and the throw was 20 feet off line.

  40. charlottencredsfan

So nice to have Jay Bruce back. Pena strikes again! And Luddy? Reports of his demise may have been greatly exaggerated.

  41. doublenohitter

Homer has a nice fastball tonight but is hanging his breaking stuff. He needs to get the breaking stuff down in the dirt.

  42. RedAlert

Homer ain’t foolin’ anybody – defense saving his tail right now

    • RedAlert

Man look at that fastball no movement whatsoever !!!!!!!!!!

  43. RedAlert

Sick if seeing this out of bailey – dude can’t stand prosperity

  44. redsfan11

Not sure if Pena has one of Walt’s patented 2 yr deals but I like him and Meso as a one two punch at the catching position and maybe Tucker will be more offensive by the time the deal is up. But if not wouldn’t be opposed to keeping Pena around for longer. Great personality too, probably one of those mythical “clubhouse” guys teams are always looking for too.

    • Steve Schoenbaechler

Agreed. At least as of now, I haven’t seen us lose anything offensively, even have gained offensively from that position.

    • Vicferrari

Holliday letting down the cards. Thanks Matt.

  45. sergeant2

I refuse to get the defibrillator out until at least June, it has to last all season ya know. Go Reds!

    • charlottencredsfan

I’m thinking about buying one and have zero problems with my heart.

  46. RedAlert

Homer got all the physical tools you could ask for in a pitcher – just drives you crazy how he seems to always put himself behind the eightball during the course of a game (so to speak)

    • Vicferrari

A pitcher is going to give up a run or 2, I have no issue with singles, a little troubled with the walks to Wong, 2 more shutout innings and it is a clutch solid outing

  47. Steve Schoenbaechler

Correct if I’m wrong, but did Homer show some wheels on that?

  48. Michael Maffie

Im not in love with BHam, but he does some things on a baseball field that I have never seen before.

    • charlottencredsfan

You don’t need to love him to appreciate him but it helps.

By the way, thanks for the help and enjoy the beer.

  49. charlottencredsfan

Another SB Steve & CP. +2 tonight.

  50. Matt S.

Anyone know how many steals billy has right now. Wow what Hamilton just did in the bottom of the fifth is worth the price of admission.

    • Michael Maffie

Hamilton isn’t just faster than everyone else — he is so much faster than everyone else he can do new things. Like tag up on an infield popup and score, or advance to second on a short fly ball. Im sure there was ZERO chance the cardinals thought he would tag up there, because no one has even tried that before. But…Hamilton isn’t like other players.

Speed is limited by OBP, but its fun to see what Hamilton can do with it.

      • charlottencredsfan

It’s interesting because even hitting into a FC, Hamilton will have moire value than the average cat. It is really going to be a challenge to put a hard value on this guy.

      • Vicferrari

Almost make you think just throwing him out at first might be more optimal than getting the lead runner

      • Michael Maffie

This is the essence of a new debate that seems to be starting (and I don’t think it will be resolved this year — or maybe for awhile): One side sees Hamilton as a “break the scale” type of player that defies current metrics, the other sees him as exceptionally good at something we can already count.

I think these moments are rare enough that they don’t add a ton of additional value to winning baseball games (although they add a lot of value for fans)…although before I say anything too hasty about his value, it will be good to see him play a full season (or two).

Regardless, I like him in our uniform.

  51. sergeant2

Props to the Cards announcers for giving Pete Rose a lotta love and respect. Go Reds!

  52. charlottencredsfan

Smoke ’em if you got ’em.

    • RedAlert

Bout seen enough of Homer tonight

      • Vicferrari

Do you really want a battle of the bullpens in the 6th in the 1st game of the series. He is limited in what he is got, would have agreed if this were the last game, but hopefully he has a clean 7th and then Broxton and Chapman shut the door.

  53. VaRedsFan

Can they please stop shifting on Adams

  54. charlottencredsfan

Smoke ’em if you got ’em

  55. Dale Pearl

I was thinking that 5 was enough for Homer, now let’s just hope he can get out of 6

    • RedAlert

Price playing with fire – playing the old “one batter too late ” like Baker used to do

  56. charlottencredsfan

If this keeps up, how do you justify relegating Simon to the pen?

  57. VaRedsFan

    TOOTBLAN…and it wasn’t us!!!

  58. sergeant2

Now that’s what you call a heads up play. (is it reviewable?) Looked out, but it was close.

  59. RedAlert

Guess those odes slowed your reaction time Peralta 😂😂😂

  60. Dale Pearl

I mentioned that in another post. No way you send your second best performing pitcher to the bullpen. Either Bailey or Cingrani should work out their off-speed selection in a bullpen role. I could see working from the bullpen for a few weeks actually helping Homer out quite a bit.

    • Vicferrari

People do not want to acknowledge he is close to passing last year’s inning total before June, he won’t make it until the end of August

  61. spro

Imagine being Miller right now. Getting lifted for a ph because it’s a clutch spot in the game, and then the ph is wasted by a pickoff

  62. RedAlert

Would not run Homer out there to start the 7th

    • charlottencredsfan

I hear you but the bullpen is brutal. I’d run him out there but he would be on the short leash.

    • Dale Pearl

Probably true, but not all baseball decisions are based upon what appears in the stats and player performance. Could very well be his salary and the unwillingness of management to risk shaking his confidence even further. I say if he doesn’t have confidence by now no matter what he never will

    • charlottencredsfan

Someone has to go because if they cast away Simon to pitch in only the 6 or 7th inning the remainder of the season, it will be malpractice.

      • Vicferrari

Totally disagree to be able to interchange him and Lecure would be very valuable

      • charlottencredsfan

Disagreement is accepted but not encouraged.

  63. charlottencredsfan

  64. NWOhioRedFan

    Wow…..he destroyed that ball.

  65. RedAlert

  66. sergeant2

Wow!!!! Mesoraco as the late great Bob Shreve would say, hit that ball a “fur piece” 5-3 Reds bot. 6th.

  67. Michael Maffie

Devin Mesoraco: at this point in the season has put up 1.5 fWAR. He won’t keep up that pace, but we may very well have a 3.5 WAR performance by Mr Mez. I’ll take it.

For those wondering, he is eligible for free agency in 2018 (the same year as Todd Frazier).

  68. jas428

Double switch time or just pinch hitter next inning?

  69. charlottencredsfan

I hate to say it but I’m not sure 5 runs will get the job done.

  70. RedAlert

Cincinnati fire dept. now on standby —

    • charlottencredsfan

With Sammy in the wings if something goes bad.

  71. RedAlert

Has Bernadina had a hit since the end of Spring training ? – geez

  72. charlottencredsfan

Come on Billy. Stop that stuff.

  73. Vicferrari

Thought this was funny, I mock this all the time and people do not get the sarcasm…
RT @m_sheldon: In 14 seasons of covering ball, never seen issue come up once. #jinx? – RT @jremy_martin: so who is the #Reds emergency catcher

  74. Dale Pearl

With Bernadina ph here does that tip Price’s hat in that he’ll probably be using Lutz more so as a starter?

  75. jas428

Does six plus outfielders make sense?

  76. mwvohio

Frazier has to be our quarter of the season MVP. I know Cueto shines brighter but he’s only out there once every 5 days.

    • RedAlert

Don’t mind Todd in the 2 hole – got speed and always a threat to go deep –

    • Vicferrari

Having Mes just makes this team much better, but can see your point since he has been solid all season

  77. Vicferrari

Funny how it seems that having Bruce and Mesoraco in the line-up just seems to keep coming after the opponent, it is contagious

  78. jas428

Bruce is only Red with hit off Siegrist.

  79. Vicferrari

Making them go through some pitchers, hopefully Bruce puts this one out of reach.

  80. Michael Maffie

Frazier: 1.9 WAR so far. Even if he slows down, he could easily hit 4 WAR this year. Much of his value this season has been in his power numbers (ISO last year: .173; this year, .217).

  81. VaRedsFan

I hope Lutz does good when he gets a chance, but has anyone asked why was he only at AA? It doesnt exactly give me alot of confidence…but Soto is gone…so there’s that

  82. Vicferrari

Really hurts not having Soto in there as a late inning defensive replacement

    • Vicferrari

I typed this as a joke, cannot see the play, what happened?

    • Dale Pearl

You can’t be serious. Any respectable catcher should be able to fill in at first. You would be the first person championing a call for Soto to stay that I have seen on any blog posting.

      • Vicferrari

Correct on the first try, I thought it was a pretty funny comment, actually kind of proud of it and it is hilarious after seeing the replay of Pena’s stop

  83. Vicferrari

Broxton threw more watm-up pitches than actual pitches

  84. ATLRedleg

Do you keep Broxton out there for the 9th?

  85. VaRedsFan

Broxton covered 1st twice and charged the weak tapper….That wind you feel is the air being sucked out of GABP with every breath he takes

  86. VaRedsFan

Ludwick swung and missed at 2 meatballs dead center of the strike zone….need better

  87. VaRedsFan

Has Chappy always had those tats?? never noticed?

  88. sergeant2

Don’t want to get ahead of myself, but I did check to see where the broom was.

  89. charlottencredsfan

That’s 2 in a row. Think they call that a “winning streak”.

Not a gem by HB but he got the job done – attaboy. Nice bullpen work and big flies by Todd and Mes.

  90. charlottencredsfan

    That was a longggggggggggggggggg single.

      • charlottencredsfan

Just a gifted athlete and a heady player as well. Very happy he is on our side. Nice observation.

  91. Matt S.

…and this one belongs to the reds!!!!

  92. charlottencredsfan

Huge a win as can be in May.

  93. mwvohio

Good game, way to hang in there Homer and keep us in it. Could have gotten out of hand at several points.

  94. pinson343

Chapman’s shown a nasty change up in his last 2 outings !

    • charlottencredsfan

Hasn’t he though. That first pitch to Peralta was a beaut.

  95. Redgoggles

With Wainwright Sunday let’s get em again tomorrow, shall we?

      • pinson343

Wainwright has had problems with the Reds throughout his career. And he’ll be pitching on short rest.

      • Redgoggles

Well, Leake against the Cards doesn’t look great on paper either. But, hey I’d take all 3!

      • charlottencredsfan

Leake is pitching the best baseball of his life this May. Don’t bet against him.

  96. 666wolverine

Big win by the good guys!!!!!

  97. sergeant2

Chapman you old drama queen you. And this one belongs to the Reds. Well played game by the Reds, in all aspects of the game. Go Reds! Adios Amigos.

    • charlottencredsfan

      It’s a new day Sarge.

    • pinson343

He is a drama queen ! Getting out Adams, who had never seen him before and is batting .136 against lefties, was too easy. So he throws a slider in the dirt to go to 3-1 on him. Just to set up throwing 2 fastballs right by him.

  98. pinson343

I missed most of it, but watched Homer pitch out of the 2 jams, nice job and a well-deserved win. And suddenly this bullpen does not look at all like the worst in the NL.

    • charlottencredsfan

Could be the Reds best all-around game this year; good starting pitching, great relief work, timely and powerful hitting, and excellent defense. Jay has a big double and Brayan Pena – what can you say, just a fun guy to watch play baseball.

      • sergeant2

I was going to post the very same thing, that this possibly the all around best game the Reds have played all season. No major base running blunders, knocking guys in to score runs aka timely hitting, heads up plays (the pick off at 2nd base) Homer hanging tough, great defensive plays, just an all around well played game. Been awhile since I have enjoyed a Reds game this much. Go Reds!

  99. 666wolverine

One of the most enjoyable games that I have watched so far this season! The reds defense was on display w the smash that Frazier grabbed, BP, and last but not least Pena!!! Pena is one of those guys you just have to root for!!! His energy and smile can really affect a club in wonderful ways!!!
