Absent Joey Votto and Jay Bruce, the Reds are struggling to stay afloat in the NL Central. Nick Kirby’s analysis of the starting pitching in the NL Central division rightly spotlights the Reds exceptional starting pitching.

The Nationals are missing three important hitters from their lineup – Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman and Adam LaRoche. Read the series preview to find out about their best remaining hitters, Jayson Werth and Anthony Rendon.

Tonight’s game features a compelling pitching matchup between childhood teammates Mike Leake and Stephen Strasburg. Watch for any evidence that Strasburg holds a grudge against Leake for comments the latter made about the former a few years ago.

If you’re a fan of the Dayton Dragons, you’ll enjoy this excellent report on their stadium Fifth Third Field done by the folks at Stadium Journey.

Onward and upward for the sizzling Devin Mesoraco (.500/.541/.870). Manager Bryan Price has Hot Mes batting fourth in tonight’s lineup that also features Skip Schumaker in right field, Brayan Peña at first base and Chris Heisey starting in left field ahead of Ryan Ludwick.

Mesoraco’s long, hard road back to hitting cleanup has finally been completed. Now that he’s forced Bryan to hit him where he belongs, he must earn permanent residency. The intriguing thing is that he may end up hitting in the #3 hole once Votto and Bruce return. This could develop into a fearsome lineup this season, despite WJ’s efforts to hamstring the lineup by relying on Ludwick to provide the RH power bat the Reds need.

  2. doublenohitter

I going into these games with the assumtion that the Reds will not win. With the worst offense in the NL and the worst bullpen in baseball, and no Bruce or Votto, how can we expect anything else?
Without Mesoraco’s bat, the Reds would have only scored 2 runs in the last series.
Mesoraco is due for a correction and that could cause a total collapse of an already feeble offense.

Still can enjoy the game without the expectations of winning.

  3. Shchi Cossack

I still think the Reds are once again misdealing by forcing the team to play short-handed with Votto injurded but not DL’d. They have pulled the same bad stunt over and over. Last season, rather than DLing Phillips and allowing him ro fully heal and recover, Phillips played the entire 2nd half of the season to the detriment of the team. Rather than making sure Votto (don’t the Reds have something like a $200MM investment in Votto?) is fully healed and fully recovered,by placing him on the 15-day DL, the Reds are going to risk a lingering, dibilitating injury to a key player for the rest of the season…again. That’s just sheer idiocy.

    • George Mirones

By accident I posted my thoughts at the beginning of yesterdays game thread. In essence MLB has an issue with injuries. I doubt if the owners in the NFL would use the MLB business model or injury procedures.

  4. mikemartz

I’m kinda liking this lineup, I sure hope it performs!
Tonight’s game is the MLB.tv free game.

  5. Shchi Cossack

Shumaker looks like the designated RF, at least against RHP, until Bruce returns, which could be any day now. I don’t think Bruce needs a rehab assignment unless he needs to test the knee in game action to be sure it’s ready to go. with the sorry state of the Reds offense, Bruce might as well get his hitting stroke tuned in on the 25-man roster when his knee is ready.

  6. Shchi Cossack

Heisey with his .587 OPS starting in LF over Ludwick and his .670 OPS screams out the sorry state of the offense. Bryan is now hiding the LFer at the bottom of the lineup along with Cozart, behind the utility catcher and a utility OF.

  7. mikemartz

I really like Pena in the lineup at the same time as Mesoraco.
The fox ohio guys keep comparing Mesoraco to Bench I can see it as far as body size, although I’m not sure Mes can hold 5 baseballs in one hand. Devins’ bat looks like it sure could turn out to be as good as or better than Johnny Benchs’ was.

  8. ToddAlmighty

For someone who is possibly the worst bunter on the team, why is Billy so desperate to give away free 1 pitch ABs? Isn’t he like 2-16 or 2-18 or so bunting? STOP IT.

    • Steve Mancuso

The one pitch ABs are killers.

      • charlottencredsfan

Received the gear and it’s very impressive as one would expect. My wife says she loves the T-shirt. I’ll be proud to wear that cap. Thanks

      • Steve Mancuso

Glad to hear you and your better half like the gear. If you find yourself in an appropriate situation, send us a picture and we’ll get it up with our other pix.

      • charlottencredsfan

I will when I’m at a Charlotte Knight minor league game with my nephew. He is just like his uncle and get enough of baseball or the Cincinnati Reds.

    • charlottencredsfan

He can drag bunt with anyone but the normal one, not so much. With his ability to make contact, he doesn’t need to jump on that first strike so much. He is a rook and learning quickly though.

  9. wildwestlv

I though Mes was going to going to cut the Washington Monument in half, like in those old 50’s sci-fi films. Shucks.

  10. mikemartz

I guess Billy can’t score in the first inning every night.

    • ToddAlmighty

There’s two things that need to happen to have a “successful” season by the most bare standards. Be over .500, and be better than the Cubs. That’s my bare minimum.

  11. wildwestlv

Jayson Werth, while a really good baseball player…looks like a complete sociopath.

  12. Jeff

Anyone on here play OOTP baseball? I’m looking into it and wanted an honest review. I need something to entertain me since the Reds are like a minor league club with all of the injuries.

  13. mikemartz

Way to go Todd, at least he was running instead of taking for granted the catch would be made

  14. charlottencredsfan

Need to cash this in. We had 10 hits yesterday and scored 3 lousy runs. That will not due.

  15. sergeant2

R-e-s-p-e-c-t that is what batting fourth means to me, sang Devin Mesoraco. Go Reds!

  16. charlottencredsfan

That was a nasty, nasty strike three pitch to HiC but we have to find a way to get that man in.

  17. preacherj

It’s interesting to hear Fay and Marty disagree on what will happen when Latos returns. Fay says Simon is matter of fact going back to the pen, Marty doesn’t seem to think it’s so clear cut. Glad to hear we are not the only ones in this debate. It will be a good decision to make.

    • Steve Mancuso

Marty insisting that Simon should stay in the rotation based on the way he’s pitching. Three flaws with that- they really need Simon in the bullpen as swing man, Simon is piling up a lot more innings than he did last year, and Simon isn’t really pitching as well as his ERA shows. Eventually, the averages will catch up with him.

If Cingrani is healthy enough to pitch every five days, there shouldn’t be much of a decision to make.

      • preacherj

I sorta agree. While his innings are piling up, I think he is physically able to handle it. We really could use a reliable (re: good) lefty in the pen. I still think there are doubts about Cigrani. I’m tempted to ride Simon for as long as possible. Usually I would agree with you, but I think these circumstances are different.

      • ToddAlmighty

Still think this rash of TJs and Simon’s numbers probably being better than he can probably maintain is a perfect storm to try to find someone who’s desperate for a starting arm and deal him for either a bat, or some prospects.

      • charlottencredsfan

Very few Latin players are getting TJ. Simon is built like a tank and I will be surprised if he breaks down anytime soon. We will just have to see. It’s just me but I like to play the best guys as long as we are still in the hunt. I understand the counter-argument, I just don’t agree with it. Doesn’t mean it is off base or unworthy.

    • George Mirones

I would think that Simon stays in rotation till he shows he can’t. The primary candidates are Tony C and Homer B. Simon has earned the right to fail the other two have been very inconsistent.

  18. Steve Mancuso

Great to see Leake’s fastball consistently at 92 mph.

    • charlottencredsfan

Quite a bit of movement too.

  19. charlottencredsfan

    Mike Leake being Mike Leake.

  20. preacherj

Marty was saying that Mat is going to throw a simulated game with Jay hitting. Music to the ears. Hopefully they will both be back soon.

  21. doublenohitter

Reds manager Bryan Price said Monday that the club has not yet made a decision whether Joey Votto (quad/knee) will require a stint on the disabled list.
Votto has remained in Cincinnati to receive treatment while his teammates continued their road trip in Washington D.C. The first baseman has missed four straight games due to a distal quadriceps strain in his left knee. At this point, it’s unclear whether the Reds are leaning towards a DL stint or if they think Votto will be available to play soon.

Are the Reds completely clueless? I don’t get this at all.

  22. preacherj

Chest high at 95 to Mikey. Stras ain’t messing with Leake.

  23. preacherj

    Alright Charlotte, there you go.

  24. sergeant2

Its been mentioned already, but the [email protected] is the free game on mlb.com. Which by the way is about minute and a half to two minutes behind the radio broadcast. Very annoying.

  25. preacherj

Has Pena been a great pick up or what?

  26. preacherj

I like this lineup…..well, you know, with what we are working with.

  27. sergeant2

Either Marty or Cowboy said if Votto goes on the DL by Friday he would be eligible to play by the time the Cardinal series rolls around.

  28. ToddAlmighty

I am not a huge Skip fan, but that was a pretty perfect throw. Good job.

  29. ToddAlmighty

Wow, Frazier showed ZERO respect for Werth’s arm right there. Never even considered stopping at 2nd.

  30. jas428

Stupid to look at fastball down the gut.

  31. Steve Mancuso

We’re trying a new guy on the recap tonight.

      • Steve Mancuso

Costas applied (again) but flunked the audition.

      • sergeant2

That’s just as well, he’s a Cardinals fan anyway. Still, I’m a big Costas fan, have been for many, many years.

    • vared

When I first read that I thought you were referring to a replacement for Milton – guess that shows my current level of confidence. Hope the guys prove me wrong.

  32. mikemartz

Pena has been a very good addition to this team so far. I wonder if Pena could play left field after Votto and Bruce are healthy. I would sure love to see Pena’s bat in the lineup every night!

  33. VaRedsFan

watched the replay 3 times on Pena’s hit and NEVER did the 3rd base coach tell Frazier to slide into 3rd. Todd did the standard slow down pop up slide.

    • ToddAlmighty

It looked a little planned, because Frazier got a big jump the second the catcher set himself up to throw towards Pena.

    • VaRedsFan

obviously with Heisey, cozart, and Leake and ext in line.

    • Steve Mancuso

Definitely. Old little league play. Start the double steal. They tried it a couple pitches before and Frazier didn’t go.

  34. ToddAlmighty

Saving people’s lives, no handed homeruns, one handed homeruns, outfield popups that somehow become homeruns… and now? Stealing home.

Bask in the glory that is Todd Frazier.

    • charlottencredsfan

He is a special player, I’d keep him around for a while. Hope he assumes more of a leadership role as times passes.

  35. Steve Mancuso

Mike Leake is super competitive to begin with. How badly do you think he’d like to outpitch Strasburg tonight.

  36. VaRedsFan

Reds are 12-11 when scoring 1st…3rd worst in NL
Nats are 10-13 when their opponent scores 1st….1st in NL.
They got us right where they want us.

  37. charlottencredsfan

It would be so nice to have a big inning as Strasburg opens the door.

  38. Steve Mancuso

Mike Leake is a fantastic athlete. Really helps himself batting and in the field.

  39. VaRedsFan

Strike 1 to Billy clearly outside

  40. charlottencredsfan

If you guys haven’t noticed, BHam has some wheels.

  41. preacherj

“Infield hit for Billy Hamilton” That’s something we should hear a lot.

  42. VaRedsFan

nice 2-strike knock for BHam on a nasty pitch

  43. VaRedsFan

    Our new offensive weapon…the HBP
    Both have scored.

  44. sergeant2

That was amazing! When they showed a replay of Schumakers drive going past 2nd base you could see Hamilton’s leg in the picture. That’s how big of a jump he got, and how fast he is.

    • Steve Mancuso

Can’t be an E3 when the throw pulls him off the bag. Pena should have made the play but the error should have been on Phillips for the half-effort throw.

      • charlottencredsfan

I guess, but I thought it was a good throw as he was off balance.

      • CP

He had tons of time to set his feet and make a strong throw.

  45. preacherj

I guess Pena is entitled to that. Unfortunately, we don’t score enough for that.

    • charlottencredsfan

Soto probably makes that play but what is the cost?

  46. Steve Mancuso

Poor effort by Philips. Gonna cost the Reds. Next ground ball is an easy out if Cozart isn’t in DP position.

    • Kyle

I don’t think that was effort. He looked like he was trying to slow his momentum which was going away from first. Not an easy throw.

  47. preacherj

Base hit for Stras? Home cooking.

    • VaRedsFan

His 1st hit of the year….albeit a gift

  48. charlottencredsfan

Keep hitting the ball to centerfield Nats. Thanks, the Reds.

  49. VaRedsFan

Leake hung 2 pitches to Werth last AB…please don’t do that again.

  50. Steve Mancuso

Awesome. Leake gets out of trouble. Go Reds!

  51. charlottencredsfan

Mike Leake says, “no worries”. Way to pick-up you teammates.

  52. VaRedsFan

Survived the 2 hard hit balls…. Nice job Leake

  53. CP

Heisey made a tough play look easy…I’m glad he was out there instead of Ludwick.

    • charlottencredsfan

No doubt. RL would still be chasing that down.

    • Kyle

Exactly what I was thinking. Leake pitching well thus far.

  54. charlottencredsfan

My kingdom for a 2-out hit.

  55. charlottencredsfan

Two-hand catch by Werth. Huh, I wonder why.

  56. BigRedMike

Leake is keeping them off balance, painting the corners

His bunt on the curve was impressive athleticism

  57. RedsfanPa

Wow, this umps strike zone is nutty!

  58. Dale Pearl

So far it is looking like the extra effort is in Leake’s corner. Can’t say enough about how well he is pitching row. Our #2 pitcher at the moment?

  59. VaRedsFan

anothe 2 strike knock for Billy!

  60. Kurt Frost

The Reds aren’t paying Homer Bailey $100 million dollars for Mr. $20 million man to sit on the bench while Billy Hamilton steals second.

  61. jas428

Hamilton is impressing me but not the stolen base part of his game. Are catchers so improved or is something wrong with his jump?

    • charlottencredsfan

I agree, maybe he has to learn the pitcher’s moves. I expect much better the next time through the league.

  62. Eric the Red

How could they score Frazier’s steal of home as a Fielder’s Choice? What exactly was the fielder choosing, to give up the run to get the guy stealing 2nd? It was clearly a steal, and I hope they change the scoring decision.

    • VaRedsFan

Nats broadcast said it was a steal of home by Todd

  63. charlottencredsfan

Guess BHam figured 2-out hits aren’t happening so get caught in a rundown and see if that works. (smile)

    • charlottencredsfan

He is still #1 in defense.

  64. VaRedsFan

You can’t alter you delivery out of the windup as per Nats announcers…call is not reviewable

  65. sergeant2

Well, I guess Brantley isn’t going to give his opinion on whether it was a balk or not.

    • charlottencredsfan

Sarge, get the defib out it looks like the pen is going to see some work.. Mike at 104 pitches.

      • sergeant2

I think we’re going to find out how much use the old defib can handle this year. And its not even June yet. I think I better shop around for a backup. And your right, here comes the bullpen.

      • vegastypo

i’m not sure what i need more of these days, a defib or the cossack’s vodka

  66. VaRedsFan

Mes has 2-3 dropped pitches per game…although that might have been a cross up.

    • VaRedsFan

either way, it cost the Reds a run.

  67. wildwestlv

If anybody tells me they spot Logan Ondrusek, JJ Hoover, or Sean Marshall warming up, I’m hitting myself in the head, with a hammer.

  68. jas428

Missed the Tucker transaction. He was sent down and who returned?

  69. wildwestlv

Sam is like The Wolf, from Pulp Fiction.

    • Vicferrari

What are his stats coming in with inherited runners and a lead? Maybe it is my imagination but he seems to get tougher the more baserunners there are. The only question is do you stick with him or use Broxton in the 8th?

      • charlottencredsfan

I’m a Sam man. Third best with inherited runners since 2012.

      • wildwestlv

Probably should stick with a warmed up LeCure, but it’s Brox, then Chapman, if it stays 2-1.

  70. charlottencredsfan

Sam might top out at 85 mph but he knows how to get outs.

    • jas428

Do you think the gun is reading high tonight? Leake seemed too fast as well.

      • Vicferrari

Seems like someone post this every time he pitches

  71. Dale Pearl

Do you guys think the 100 pitch count is a physical wall or a mental one? It sure seems like that even 20 years ago but were throwing 150 pitches on a regular basis without blowing out their elbows. Now… a guy hits 100 and he looks like he is about to pass out.

  72. RedsfanPa

    Washington’s bullpen is pretty stout….

  73. charlottencredsfan

That ball looks like a walnut in Big Brox’s hand.

  74. charlottencredsfan

Hard for the ball to find any grass in centerfield with Billy out there.

  75. preacherj

Nothing scarier than a 1 run game with this team.

  76. preacherj

Put it in your pocket, young Todd.

  77. preacherj

Any guess on who I would enter in a team eating contest? Just wow.

    • preacherj

And by team eating, I mean ‘what team can you eat.’

  78. wildwestlv

I was wrong. Big Brox looked good.

    • Vicferrari

Been awesome this year, granted the only one he allowed was a blown save but if I recall he came threw and got out of it and Votto got the walk-off win

      • charlottencredsfan

Well with Brox, Sam and Chapman we at least have the makings of a good bullpen. Now if they can get just a little help.

  79. preacherj

Heisey with a double. Let’s get him in.

  80. charlottencredsfan

    Same line-up tomorrow night, please.

  81. preacherj

I wouldn’t change pitchers. I’d let Bernadina hit if I’m Washington.

  82. VaRedsFan

Chapman from the stretch….this seems to vary from outing to outing

  83. charlottencredsfan

    Sarge, pass the defib please.

  84. sergeant2

According to pitch track Chapman is ALL over the place, well except for that one “right down Broadway”

  85. RedsfanPa

Sigh….well not surprised the way things have gone…

  86. jas428

Not that it matters, but maybe no outs with other leftfielders.

  87. Dale Pearl

Well at least we tried. Leake deserved a better fate, but oh well what can you do? Go Reds! Great effort all the way around but just not enough in the end.

  88. charlottencredsfan

Parra should pitch until his arm falls off or we most certainly lose this game. Yikes!

  89. vegastypo

the joy of modern baseball … keep changing pitchers until you find one that coughs up the lead.

  90. WVRedlegs

I think we just witnessed the night Chapman loses the fulltime closer job. Broxton will probably get some shots now.

  91. RedsfanPa

Another bullpen failure, Leake deserved better…ugh!

  92. Kyle

Spending so much money for so little production in the pen. Bad asset management.

  93. Jeff Morris

I knew that Chapman would blow the save. His control is a problem, and he struggled in AAA minors, and hitters can expect a fast ball, especially when they are ahead of the count. He continues to be a hard thrower, but not a pitcher.

  94. Vicferrari

That hit by .105 Mccouth really hurt, not only got it to 1 run, but burned Lecure for 1 out. You might have to go with Chapman one more inning. Can’t say I would have done it any differently but it is a sign of a bad team when your closer cannot close, all of a sudden he is worrisome if he cannot be counted on

  95. sergeant2

Ok now Reds, lets score some runs and win this game. And yes absolutely I would send Chapman back out there. Win or lose, he needs the work. (Unless his pitch count is up there, I lost track on that) Go Reds! We need an unsung hero tonight.

  96. CP

Chapman’s 86% success rate goes down. Blarg.

  97. love4reds

Ok.. that was the most bizarre strike zone for Schumaker’s walk based on gameday. But I guess I’ll take it.

  98. charlottencredsfan

Did Welch just say he is not so certain this is the worst bullpen in the league? Is he actually watching these games? Give me Marty B. any day over that great analysis.

    • George Mirones

I heard the same thing and then the lame *** explanation about innings pitched. I normally watch with the sound muted but had it on as I was checking other games MLB TV

  99. VaRedsFan

    BP missed the hanging curve…foul

  100. preacherj

One run leads and this bullpen really, really, really don’t go together.

  101. VaRedsFan

BP robbed again…great play by Rendon

  102. Kyle

That close on back to back batters. Can’t stomach watching anymore tonight.

  103. VaRedsFan

I’d like to get one of those 4 hits Mes had yesterday today. He’s gotten plenty of wood on the ball but nothing to show for it.

  104. RedsfanPa

Another wasted opportunity, won’t get many against this bullpen….jeez

  105. doublenohitter

Reds bullpen with a 5.40 ERA? I’ve been following the Reds for 40 years and they have never had a bullpen this bad. Not even in the lean years.

  106. doublenohitter

I expected them to not hit…and they didn’t.
I expected the bullpen to blow it…and they did.
I expect them to lose…and they will.

    • sergeant2

Whatta ya know, that’s the same thing I say about the Cardinals. I’m pretty sure Cardinal fans don’t say that. Go Reds!

  107. Ellis Henry

Walt (on Soto and Bernadina): I think they’ll fit right in with our bench concept.
Price: That reminds me, I was going to ask you. What exactly *is* our bench concept?

  108. RedsfanPa

I’m worried Desmond will put one in the seats…hope not tho…lol.

  109. Ellis Henry

Walt (on every member of the bullpen): I think they’ll fit right in with our bullpen concept.
Price: That reminds me, I was going to ask you. What exactly *is* our bullpen concept?

  110. Vicferrari

Risky move going back to Chapman, can he go tomorrow?, and if he is awful tomorrow then you really gotta question it, maybe we can get 2 shutout innings from Hoover, find his midseason form from last year

    • charlottencredsfan

CP, I don’t know. Do you have these guys stay on the field after the game and just work on hitting with RISP?

      • charlottencredsfan

Heck, how do I know? Do I look like a hitting instructor? (Smile)

    • preacherj

Preaching is my job. I’m still working on the patience sermon.

  111. Vicferrari

I will never understand giving up on the bunt with 2 strikes, what is more likely that you will get the bunt down or start off swinging with 2 strikes on you and not hit into a DP?

    • RedsfanPa

How did auto correct get coast from Cozart?….. lol.

  112. charlottencredsfan

Preach, can you say a prayer here?

  113. wildwestlv

Joe West hates putting on those headphones.

  114. Dale Pearl

One of the writers on redlegnation here should make an attempt to become the next Reds beat reporter. Mark Sheldon gets the nod and no disrespect to his writing but he is just not that into the Reds as a whole. I would say Steve but he would wind up banning me the first day with negative comments on the team.

    • wildwestlv

Steve’s very fair. He’d never ban you for negativity alone. He actually would be much better than Sheldon. Very knowledgeable. And a sense of humor as well.

      • charlottencredsfan

And a passion for the game. I have told him more than once, send over some manuscripts. Both Sheldon and Fay are dry as dirt. Steve can write too.

    • CP

      I don’t think you understand what a journalist/beat writer’s job is…

      • charlottencredsfan

Let me guess. To bore you to death?

      • CP

To quote my one of my favorite shows when I was a young lad, “just the facts, ma’am.”

      • CP

That said, I certainly agree that the Reds could do better. Go young with hungry beat writers who are native to social media.

      • charlottencredsfan

I don’t know if that sells newspapers.

      • charlottencredsfan

        Love me some Dragnet too.

  115. George Mirones

The long view is this, the last 40 games last year, including the Pits. play-in the Reds were 20 – 20. this year after the first 42 games they are 19 – 23 that’s 39 – 42 for the last 81 games. The light at the end of tunnel is getting very dim.

  116. RedsfanPa

The statue is called out on strikes…..

    • Vicferrari

There more like the nails and that is not a complement

    • charlottencredsfan

Still icing that arm from the 2012 extra inning game in Philly. I think he threw something like 200 pitches that night.

      • hoosierdad

Pretty sure he’s out of baseball. Seems like Oakland signed him to a minor league deal last year?????

  117. ToddAlmighty

Bullpen and bench are soooooooo bad. Like really really terrible. I don’t want to even watch the game once the starting pitchers come out.

  118. VaRedsFan

2.07 bullpen ERA for the Nats…best in MLB.
Wonder who has the advantage here?

  119. wildwestlv

Even if we lose, I like exhausting both bullpens, tonight and Cueto vs. Fister, tomorrow. I’d put my $ on Johnny going the distance. It’s something.

  120. VaRedsFan

Clippard coming in…We’ve gotten to him several times before…Lets go top of the order.

  121. wildwestlv

I don’t think anyone knows if that was reviewable. Shame.

  122. ToddAlmighty

I have to say though.. when your bench consists of Soto, Santiago, Ludwick, and Bernadina… and your playing shorthanded (like always).. I think it’s a pretty good sign your GM isn’t doing his job very well.

    • charlottencredsfan

Keep Parra in. JJ is like drinking poison.

      • Vicferrari

Cannot get the curve over, this will not take long

      • charlottencredsfan

Like using a sharp saw blade to have your leg removed. Clean & quick.

  123. wildwestlv

    How’s yer BP meds holdin’ up, Sarge? (& I don’t mean B.randon P.hillips)

  124. RedsfanPa

    Hoover is in…..time for bed….I can’t watch…lol.

  125. charlottencredsfan

At least JJ’s ERA is now under so we have that going for us. Probably means he is due to be bombed, unfortunately.

    • charlottencredsfan

      Under 10. I’m very tired.

  126. VaRedsFan

    Lead off walk…any surprise there?

    • Vicferrari

He is a better pitcher than this, but just an unfortunate year for so many players despite Mes, Cueto, Broxton, Simon, and Leake

  127. This reds team = bozo the clowns

lead off walk…. r u f’in joking me hoover.. throwing error cofart this team really is a joke.. poor meso

  128. VaRedsFan

Cozart with a rare error/mental error

  129. CP

I can’t even imagine what’s it like to be JJ Hoover. He has to be feeling so much pressure.

  130. CP

I would say that was an unintentional/intentional walk, but…JJ Hoover.

    • Vicferrari

Should had went after Rendon, and tried to get around Werth, hopefully it works

  131. Dale Pearl

Looks like Fisher is playing in an independent league for a team called Somerset Patriots. Must be a Reds graveyard Mat Maloney is playing on that team as well.

  132. John Walsh

On the bright side, J.J. is only the third worst Hoover in Washington, D.C. history.

  133. This reds team = bozo the clowns

here comes another walk on 4 pitches… ofcourse.. good job hoover 2 walks .. way to throw strikes.. price as usual., not making any moves.. i have never seen pitching coach turned manager manage the bullpen so awful ever

    • Vicferrari

who would you bring in? Probably could argue leaving Parra one more inning, but come on this team is what is and it is not Prices fault they cannot execute

  134. wildwestlv

DP time. Come on. Let’s do this.

  135. sergeant2

Funny Marty should mention that, the Reds players baseball intellect that is. When it comes to fundamentals, the Reds players seem to be as dumb as rocks.

    • sergeant2

The Reds coaches and manager deserve an honorable (or dishonorable) mention for not correcting the lack of fundamentals.

    • VaRedsFan

Even with ia silent night at the plate…he didn’t take it to the field

  136. wildwestlv

Sarge, gonna need me some of that stuff, tonight.

  137. WVRedlegs

    BP getting horizontal twice tonight.

  138. VaRedsFan

We need to bat around, due to whoever is slated for bottom of 13th

    • Dale Pearl

keep the bench warm for the other players. I think I saw him the other night get a cup of Gatorade for Cueto.

    • hoosierdad

Remind me again what sense it makes to have Soto on the club. A career .083 AVG with a .111 OBP is just not getting it done. There simply HAS to be a better option.

  139. wildwestlv

I think the Nat’s fans are booing that.

  140. charlottencredsfan

    Almost laughable at this point.

    • charlottencredsfan

Stats show that hitting with RISP is not a skill. So happy to hear that as the Reds certainly don’t possess it.

  141. Aaron Bradley

Price got greedy making the defensive switch. Is Soto an upgrade at 1B? Now there is a HUGE hole in the lineup. I can’t believe this was the plan to back up Joey Votto at 1B in the event of injury. Jocketty is killing this team.

    • Vicferrari

I know and what is worse there is no back-up catcher

  142. WVRedlegs

Thats why its important to get the bunt down. Fundamentals. Brutal.

  143. kywhi123

I’m sorry, but after Soto’s first poor attempt at bunting, what on this earth made Bryan Price think he would do any better on that second attempt?

  144. Dale Pearl

At this point I”m kind of intrigued how it will turn out with both teams rapidly running out of players. If we get an injury on the field we might start seeing pitchers in there playing the field.

  145. wildwestlv

I don’t have enough Losartan Potassium for this game. ANY of our starting pitchers could be called in to bunt. What’s the point?

  146. manolito75

I hope that at some point this century WJ realizes that Soto is not a major league player.

  147. doublenohitter

I already took a phenagan for my stomach. i’m about to mix it with a lorazapam. i won’t care then.

  148. sergeant2

Are you telling me that there is not another player in triple A or anywhere really that would not be an improvement over Soto. Is it about money that the Reds keep him.

      • hoosierdad

So, how many emergency catchers have the REDS needed the last few years and how many other teams have emergency catchers? Hey, Leake was a catcher many years ago…..

    • Derrick Hoel

I know. The last 3 years the Pirates have gotten Morneau, Ike Davis and Gabby Sanchez. All better than what we are throwing out there.

  149. charlottencredsfan

Very nice outing for JJ. Good for him.

  150. George Mirones

reminds me of a San Diego game a few years back that went on for 3 days when the Reds went with the next days starter (A. Harang) and he was never the same.

  151. wildwestlv

Hoover IS getting his work in, high leverage situation. Cannot simulate this stuff.

  152. Derrick Hoel

Hoover is good and Cozart gets a hit?!!! Watch out for something bad to happen now
Oh, Santiago is up lol ,there it is

  153. hoosierdad

REDS can’t blame the pitching staff for being in the 14th inning. T.O.S.

    • Vicferrari

You can blame Chapman, he has got to better than allowing a lead-off 2b, at least he did not implode, pick your poison here Ondrusek or that other lefty that used to be Sean Marshall

  154. charlottencredsfan

Come on Billy, we need a hero.

  155. charlottencredsfan

    Must be past BHam’s bedtime – 3 K’s in a row.

  156. BearcatNation

At some point, the RISP average has to even out. Right? RIGHT?!??

    • VaRedsFan

      no…we aren’t flipping coins here….it takes skill/will/determination

  157. wildwestlv

So, who here has some bottled oxygen?

  158. Kurt Frost

That Schumaker strike out was gritty and gutty.

    • VaRedsFan

Votto-esque as he stood there and watched.

  159. Ellis Henry

Hitters batting .360 off Ondrusuck. This is going to end well…

  160. wildwestlv

Who caught the DC Reds nerd in the Chris Sabo t-shirt? Man.

  161. Aaron Bradley

Ondru needs to just rear back and throw hard… he is too big to be throwing barely over 90… sacrifice some control for velocity.

    • wildwestlv

      …sacrifice some “control”?!?

  162. charlottencredsfan

Chances that Mes starts tomorrow night?

  163. jas428

Bryan Pena would have dropped that ball at first.

  164. BearcatNation

    Wow. Just wow.

Defense just bailing out this team right now.

  165. charlottencredsfan

Hamilton is the best CF in MLB.

      • charlottencredsfan

Overall yes, at this point. But no one, no one else has a prayer of catching that ball.

  166. VaRedsFan

    Billy!!!!!….defense bails out hoover…now Ondru

  167. Vicferrari

If the Reds actual get a lead, is there anyway they could bring in Cueto? I know warming up is different, but if all you need is one inning?

  168. kywhi

Let’s hope these defensive gems by Hamilton and Phillips erase the beliefs by some that this team doesn’t care.

  169. sergeant2

By all rights the Reds should have won the game in the 9th, but our closer didn’t close, it happens, whatta ya gonna do, right. The Reds can still win the game, no doubt about that. Go Reds! C’mon Mesoraco or Frazier win this hard fought game. Go Reds!

  170. preacherj

Leadoff batter on base again. Reds are 3-38 with RISP in the last two games.

  171. charlottencredsfan

Lead-off man on base again. By some miracle, can we get him across the plate? Probably not.

  172. preacherj

Reds have had runners on base in every inning but the 8th and the 12th. At some point…..

  173. BearcatNation

  174. charlottencredsfan

  175. VaRedsFan

4 o6 leadoff hitters on for the Reds, just in extras….FRAZIER!!!

    • Vicferrari

I would feel a lot better with a few more, considering who is on the mound and who we got left if Cueto is not an option

    • kywhi

Let’s hope it’s a Hal King moment all over again!

    • Aaron Bradley

so the Reds are not only playing short a hitter/fielder (Votto), they also are playing short a pitcher as well (Marshall). Swell.

  176. Aaron Bradley

We’re not out of the woods yet. Is Ondru gonna close it out? Or can Marshall make a rare appearance?

  177. sergeant2

Whoooooooo!!!!!!!! Yeah baby, hit one dem long balls. 4-2 Reds Here we go Redlegs here we go. Hey why not get a few more. Go Reds!

    • preacherj

Ondru and Marshall left. I think we all know the answer to that question.

  178. RedAlert

Don’t run Longball Logan back out there – don’t begin to trust him to protect a 2 run lead !!!

    • RedAlert

Who is left in the pen other than Marshall?

      • RedAlert

Well guess that answers my question with Ondrusuck batting

      • Vicferrari

No PH’s left, could have had Cingranni hit

  179. VaRedsFan

    3 doubles for CH.
    Ludwick for sure tomorrow

    • jas428

make that several days off as a reward for jacking OBP, playing strong D and hustling…

  180. Vicferrari

The dilema do you walk Cozart, I guess there are no more PH anyway

    • Vicferrari

There’s my answer, I think I probably quit paying attention to any game that Ondrusek actual is kept in to bat

  181. Dale Pearl

Now eeking out a win here could seriously change the grit of this team. Step up or step down boys but don’t be caught standing still!

  182. Ethan

No me chinches (Spanish for, you gotta be kidding me)!!!! Come on Ondru-suck!

  183. charlottencredsfan

If we lose this game, I might have to take a couple of days off.

  184. RedAlert

Ondrusek just plain and simple sucks !!!!

  185. sergeant2

Bruce would have had that. Be that as it may, the Reds got to hang in and win this game.

  186. Dale Pearl

If Logan blows this one it should be an immediate DFA and a call up from Louisville for anyone who answers the phone.

  187. charlottencredsfan

Come on Ondru, 1 more out.

  188. RedAlert

He CANNOT pitch a clean inning – high drama every single time he is in the game – I cannot understand for the life of me why he remains in this already awful bullpen !!!

    • RedAlert

And there you go – now a long one wins it – mercy

  189. MikeC

Couldn’t sleep….got up to see the Reds with a 2 run, much to my surprise and delight. Looks lke the bullpen held up in extras. Now I gotta hang on to see Ondru finish them (I hope).

  190. kywhi

Hopefully, at long last, this is the game that gets the bullpen headed back to being the dependable staff we know they can be — the one we’ve gotten accustomed to seeing over the past few seasons.

    • Vicferrari

I think Hoover will turn it around, Ondrusek got just enough D but had that been a non-walk off situation and that ball fell in, Werth might have knocked in 2 more being that it played, my point Ondrusek has got a long way to go

  191. preacherj

Uh oh. Back to a one run game. Scary.

  192. preacherj

Whew. Finally. Ondru with the win!

  193. charlottencredsfan

And this one belongs to the Reds!

  194. RedAlert

Man I can’t take this dude on the mound – he is brutal – I don’t care if he got the win – he still sucks

  195. charlottencredsfan

Game balls: Frazier, BP & BHam.

    • Dale Pearl

Leake deserved it too. He pitched a good game…. better than Strasburg. but a huge win for the team.

      • Vicferrari

Exactly, been solid all year at least 62/3 in every start, he stays a away from the long ball and he is a dark horse #2 guy in the making

      • charlottencredsfan

It was so long ago, I forgot. You are absolutely right. Now we have Cueto & Simon going, not too bad!

  196. Ethan

We win! We win! But for some reason it doesn’t seem like a win. Wow, we got lucky on that last out. Blessed be the name of Todd Frazier!

    • Vicferrari

Kind like splitting a DH without a loss

  197. wildwestlv

  198. Dale Pearl

A huge win for the Reds. We should still DFA Logan there and call up a fresh arm for the next game. Hopefully this kind of win adds to the team and really gets em going. Dr. Cueto later on!

    • Vicferrari

They cannot DFA everybody, but it is sad to say there are 5 players on this roster that should not be but sometimes you can win with warm bodies

  199. sergeant2

Of all the losses, and there has been way too many, a loss tonight would have been the most disheartening. But the Reds hung tough and won the game. I hope the win spurs the team on to be more determined to win than ever. Lets get another win tomorrow. Go Reds!

  200. wildwestlv

IF Steve has this RECAP up & ready to go, I’m calling him out. Sorry.

  201. cfd3000

Great to see the Reds pull this one out. Leake and Heisey both had great games that will be lost in the twilight. Soto is clearly not ready for the majors – who wants his spot as soon as Votto return? Lutz time? But I can’t help thinking it might have been worth losing to see Hoover and Ondrusek sent to Louisville. They should be thanking Phillips and Hamilton not just for saving the game, but for saving their jobs.

  202. sergeant2

Chin up you nattering nabobs of negativity, maybe the Reds will lose tomorrow and you can make the negative comments you had saved up to make after the foregone conclusion that tonight’s game was a loss. Go Reds!!!!!!!! Adios Amigos.
