The Reds travel to Pittsburgh for the first time this season and for the first time since the season ending defeat at the hands of the Pirates in last season’s playoffs.  The Reds are coming off back to back series wins while the Pirates are coming off a “slugging” defeat by the Brewers.

Mike Leake held the Pirates in check in his last start and will look to do the same thing tonight in Pittsburgh.  The Reds are facing Francisco Liriano.  He was roughed up by the Reds in that exact same game including a homerun off the bat of the Red Surge!  I wouldn’t mind seeing a repeat of that game again tonight!

Discuss the game here, Reds fans!

1. Hamilton CF
2. Votto 1B
3. Phillips 2B
4. Frazier 3B
5. Bruce RF
6. Ludwick LF
7. Mesoraco C
8. Cozart SS
9. Leake P

Speaking of the Brewers, that “slugging” comment made me think about some of the idiots they have had or have on their team currently.

Nyger Morgan – I mean c’mon, by far the worst player in the game…from his days as “Tony Plush” to wearing an army hat and cussing after winning the NLDS…

Ryan Braun – I think he was juicing

Carlos Gomez – He has been the center of all the brawls for Brewers like Andrew Whitworth is always at the bottom of the pile of the Bengals…

    Rant over.

    • Ethan

I can’t stand the Brew Crew. They are full of thugs. They can’t sustain this improbable run. The wheels will fall off, and by the All-Star break they’ll be out of the conversation.

      • Pete Rose

Reds fan here – and to respond to your comment, don’t count on it about the Brew Crew – possible but just as probable that they are this year’s Pirates – and as a heads up they have a soft week (SD and Cubs visit Milwaukee). Just saying they aren’t going anywhere.

    • jdx19

I love Andrew Whitworth! I guess BrewCrew fans love Gomez.

  2. Ethan

I would move Mez and Leake up. I absolutely love seeing JV in the two whole. It would be interesting to see what the Reds’ record is this year with him in the two spot as opposed to the three whole.

Time to give the ‘Rats a nice Queen City mauling!

    • Pete Rose

Mez leads off the next inning while Frazier and Ludwick snuff out any potential strong inning for the Reds. Pretty dumb I would humbly say.

  3. charlottencredsfan

Mesoraco doesn’t move up. I don’t understand. You have a .500 hitter with awesome power, move him to a more productive slot at least until he cools a bit. Oh well, go Reds.

    • jdx19

I’m guessing Price wants a track record of me than 9 games before he deems Mesoraco to be the 2nd coming of Johnny Bench.

With that said, I agree with you. I want him higher in the order.

  4. charlottencredsfan

BHam is a very special talent.

    • Pete Rose

On top of it Billy Ham is doing the small things – hope everyone noticed that Billy Ham knocked the ball out of the catcher’s mitt. Small things win ball games.

      • jdx19

He didn’t attempt to do that. It just sort of happened.

  5. charlottencredsfan

What can you say. He makes every defensive player rush. Just amazing.

  6. jdx19

So far, both Todd and BP showing decent discipline in their first AB.

  7. al

We’re still talking about BP’s RBIs from last year? He’s got a .630 OPS this year and he’s hitting 3rd. Where are all the people who bashed Votto last year while he was hitting 3rd?

  8. mwvohio

Nice AB by Frazier, make this a long inning if we can. Pirates do not have much of a pen tonight.

  9. VaRedsFan

Wandy to the DL. Bruce will sleep better

  10. ToddAlmighty

Billy Hamilton is so fast he goes 1st to 3rd on balls hit back to the pitcher.

    • Pete Rose

Not to mention the kid has big time baseball smarts – wished he would share some with some other Reds players who find themselves quite deficient in that area.

  11. ToddAlmighty

Also.. what’s the over/under on HBP in this series now that the first pitch of the game was a ball directly into Hamilton’s shins? I’m going with 6.5.

    • jdx19

This should make the recap! I’m thinking Leake has to drill someone. Maybe McCutcheon if he is batting 3rd and gets the first 2 men out.

  12. jdx19

Last time against Liriano, Bruce was benched. What do you guys think about the decision to start him tonight, given Price’s decision last time?

I can’t imagine his career numbers against Liriano are any good. It always makes me curious when managers seem to contradict themselves.

Unless, maybe Jay’s first night off was scheduled and just happened to be against Liriano.

    • mwvohio

He wasn’t benched due to Liriano being on the mound, there was an interview of Price before the game about it and he had Bruce scheduled for that day off because the following day was also an off day. Whole thing was planned well in advance.

      • jdx19

Roger that. Thanks to you and AL for the replies.

    • al

Price said it was a scheduled day off. Whether that was true or not, who knows. Also, since 2010, Jay Bruce has hit .245 against lefties and has more HRs vs lefties than anyone else in the game, right or left-handed. He’s got 45, Pujols is 3 behind him at 42.

So I’m ok with him hitting against lefties.

  13. Steve Mancuso

Would have rather had Mesoraco up there instead of Ludwick with two runners on base.

  14. mwvohio

Leake not getting that outside and low call is maybe a bad sign of things to come.

  15. jdx19

I think BP makes that play 8 of 10 times.

  16. Steve Mancuso

BP should have made that play. Not that difficult. About four steps to the backhand.

  17. ToddAlmighty

I can’t help but think BP is hurt. That’s the third play in the last 10 innings that he didn’t make that I could have sworn BP almost always makes. There were those two plays last game that he didn’t even try to turn into a doubleplay.

  18. Steve Mancuso

Too bad that hit wasn’t higher in the lineup. Hot Mes!

  19. ToddAlmighty

Man I would have loved that hit with runners on.

  20. Pete Rose

Boy that knock would have looked awfully good in the 1st inning.

  21. al

It just doesn’t look like a fluke with Mesoraco right now. He’s crushing everything.

    • jdx19

I agree it’s not a fluke, but he’s riding a good ‘ol fashioned hot streak. He’ll eventually hit a cold streak to even out the stat lines. Even the best hitters in history will go 0 for 10 at some point.

  22. jdx19

Stat of the night: Cozart has the lowest swinging strike % on the team, at 3.9%.

    • doublenohitter

Cozart has the lowest everything on the team.
A saw something on the web yesterday that said he was the worst hitting everyday player in baseball. Ouch!

      • jdx19

I think the reason for my post was lost on ya, unfortunately. Swinging strike % being low is a good thing. Therefore, Cozart having the the lowest on the team should be surprising. He also has the highest contact%, as you may expect.

  23. L.A. Red

Everyone is all over either Billy Hamilton or BP for not hitting well, but Zack Cozart is just awful. He’s hitting worse than Paul Janish (who supposedly had a great glove, but I never saw it). But anyway, Walt needs to keep his eyes peeled for a SS, cause come trade deadline time we need to make a move he’s still hitting below .200!

    • charlottencredsfan

Don’t know where you have been but ZC has been murdered on this site.

    • Steve Mancuso

The big difference there is the spot in the batting order.

    • jdx19

We know Cozart is going to be dreadful. We all still have hope for BH and we also have hope that BP can maintain at least similar numbers to last year.

I think now that Cozart bats 8th most folks have made peace with him at the dish.

    • ToddAlmighty

I think everyone is happy with how Hamilton has played if you remove the first series of the year. BP was doing well too until he got hurt and now he’s trying to play through it again, and not to the benefit of the team.

Nobody’s happy with Cozart, but also nobody ever expected him to be any kind of serious offensive contribution. His BABIP is also crazy low.

I do find it odd you chose now to mention it when even if you include today’s 0-1, he’s 8 of his last 31 (.258), 3 2B, 1 HR, 7 RBI.. I will take that from a borderline GG defense SS. He just had a horrible start to the season.

  24. mikemartz

Billy is so fast, he popped out to the Pirates right fielder for 3’rd out and by the time the ball was caught he had rounded the bases grabbed his hat and glove from the dugout and was standing in center field.

    • VaRedsFan

He once hit a line drive up the middle and was struck by the ball rounding 2nd

  25. VaRedsFan

    Joey’s turn at leadoff…top of 3rd

  26. Ryan Lykins (@ryan_lykins)

I almost feel like MLB needs to change the replay rule to when the manager steps out of the dugout they should just call that his challenge from then on. It’s kind of dumb they can come out and then get the okay to either challenge or not.

  27. ChrisInVenice

I think we can thank the new “blocking the plate” rule for helping Hamilton knock the ball out of Martin’s glove. Martin had to be off to the mound side of the plate and reach over with a backhand to get the throw … if he could block the plate, he would have been able to take that throw with two hands, I believe.

  28. Steve Mancuso

BP looked healthy on that hit!

  29. jdx19

It’s like Wrigley all over! Double after double!

  30. Pete Rose

man, lets get Liariano BIG TIME – how about a 5 spot?

  31. charlottencredsfan

Fraz – the boys are starting make some good contact.

  32. VaRedsFan

I see good adjustments this inning. Liriano has been primarily getting strike 1 with the fast ball, then a steady diet of off speed. Attacking the fastball strikes early.

  33. jdx19

I think Liriano only threw 12 pitches that inning. Pretty wild.

  34. charlottencredsfan

Pecking away at Liriano. Now at nearly 50 pitches through 3 innings and you know that bullpen doesn’t want to see much work tonight.

  35. charlottencredsfan

    Leake can play this game.

  36. mwvohio

That has to feel so good for Leake and Votto after Marte lucks past the shift.

  37. charlottencredsfan

Has Mike thrown one pitch above the belt? Or even close to it?

  38. charlottencredsfan

    This is getting ridiculous.

  39. jdx19

Meso’s BABIP was .583 coming into the game. It’s gotta be over .600 now… AAAAAND he was safe…. Looked to me.

    • Pete Rose

I will take it if he shares his smarts – because he’s got them.

  40. mwvohio

Wow, how are they not challenging that? Looked safe to me on the replay.

  41. ToddAlmighty

Jeeze Price, what’s the point of a challenge if you’re not going to use it when your player is safe at 2nd with 0 outs?

  42. jdx19

The last replay showed on ESPN was pretty clear. He was safe. Maybe the Reds’ guy didn’t see that view. You can clearly see the base depress as hit foot hits it with daylight between the glove and Mesoraco.

    • Pete Rose

Come on Brian – protect your players, please

      • Pete Rose

Either way, good hustle – bad call by ump

      • jdx19

The thing that irks me the most is the whole “tie goes to the runner” thing. There’s no way the ump could have thought it was anything other than a tie. Oh, well.

  43. yorktownred

I thought the call that Price challenged yesterday was much closer. Should have challenged.

  44. hof13

It was a really close play. I don’t know that it would have been overturned.

  45. mwvohio

I think managers are still getting a feel for when and what is worth challenging. Give it some time and they’ll get it sorted out I’m sure.

  46. jdx19

Once there is enough data (if this is even analyzable), I bet using your challenge at the very first good opportunity is going to turn out to be optimal. No point saving it when you don’t know if you’ll need it.

With the exception of HBP and the back-to-back doubles, Liriano has looked on his game. I hope this turns into another tough-luck loss for him.

    • hof13

Im sure someone will analyze how many times a close play occurs more than once in the first 7 innings (I think after that its up to the umps if they want to review if I remember right). I tend to think it will probably show it is worthwhile to challenge the first opportunity.

  47. Pete Rose

You have to be kidding – Mez is hitting .543 – and batting 7th – does that mean all the hitters in front of him in the line-up are hitting better? (tic)

    • charlottencredsfan

Tomorrow he just has to move up.

      • Pete Rose

It’s a total injustice if Mez doesn’t, just saying

      • RedsAk19

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Right now the Reds are scoring runs with this lineup so I would keep it as is.

  48. ToddAlmighty

I don’t understand it.. he’s willing to give a free out with a sacrifice bunt to play for 1 run… but he’s not willing to use his challenge in 2-0 game to have a runner on 2nd with 0 outs rather than 0 on, 1 out?

I seriously just don’t understand it.

  49. jdx19

Here’s where Leake needs to earn his money! A bloop followed by an almost tie game HR…

  50. charlottencredsfan

Got that ball up in the zone and Pedro knew what to do with it.

  51. VaRedsFan

not a good pitch by Leake…a get me over fastball to a guy that can only hit fastballs

  52. Pete Rose

Crunch time folks … saw that coming

  53. jdx19

There was no doubt in my mind. Was there any doubt in yours?

    • jdx19

That’s a MLB first. Ever. In the history of the game. Has to be.

Two grand slams against the same team for different teams in April.

      Un f’ing believable.

      And Liriano is cruising.

  54. Pete Rose

Wheels have fallen off for Leake

    • charlottencredsfan

I jinxed him last inning. My bad.

  55. ToddAlmighty

Don’t worry guys, at least we saved the challenge.

    • Eric the Red

Good point. On top of the two grand slams, Leake served up two homeruns to Lucas Duda that helped convince the Mets to finally give up on Davis and let him go to a contender in exchange for a bag of baseballs.

  56. Pete Rose

Leake has to locate – he didn’t

    • Pete Rose

Just replayed it – down the middle – bad pitch

  57. jdx19

Ike Davis was optioned to AAA last year because he’s such a terrible hitter. Someone forgot to notify him of this. Ugh.

  58. doublenohitter

Didn’t the Pirates do this last year? Go out and get a hitter to help their team and he kills the Reds.
How come the Reds never go out and get any hitting help?

    • RedsAk19

It’s not like the Pirates went out and got Babe Ruth. Davis hit .227 in 2012 and .205 in 2013. He was only hitting .208 this year when the Pirates traded for him.

  59. charlottencredsfan

I can’t see 4 runs winning this game.

    • jdx19

Why? Liriano is cruising. He hit Billy on the first pitch of the game. Since then, he’s given up two doubles and nothing else hit hard.

      • charlottencredsfan

Sorry, he is not impressing me. To each his own.

      • charlottencredsfan

6 base runners in 4 innings isn’t actually Sandy Koufax territory.

    • Pete Rose

That is why they should have challenged the call on Mez. 2B and none out would have looked real good. Just saying

      • Sparky

I just don’t understand why that wasn’t challenged, its was so safe.

  60. jdx19

And of course, two grounders and a strike out after single, double, HBP, grandslam.

    Sequencing. Lucky Pirates.

  61. Nasty Boys Nasty Groove

just when you start having faith in Mike Leake he does this kinda thing…

    • Pete Rose

Mike is good – he just picks inopportune times to throw a pitch down the middle …because sluggers know what to do with it. And I agree, the Reds had them where they wanted them 2-0 with man on 2B – but not – bad decision

    • Pete Rose

Folks, there are no SS out there – and other than SS – who else starting for the Reds deserves to be kicked to the curb? OF – set C, 1b, 2b and 3b set. And the Cards went out determined to get a SS in the offseason – how’s he doing? Oh, that’s right the Cards new SS, Johnny Peralta, is hitting .169.

      • Pete Rose

Btw, Cards getting shut out 1-0 by Mets.

  62. VaRedsFan

Pirates might not have gotten guys in the off season, but they waste no times filling hole DURING the season.

  63. jdx19

Billy now 2 for 10 on bunts. He needs to stop giving away outs until he learns how to bunt.

    • ProspectCincy

And how do u expect him to learn?

  64. Pete Rose

Liriano is now settling in – and the Reds had him on the ropes – darn

  65. jdx19

Stat of the Night 2: Ike Davis has driven in 12.9% of the runs the Reds have given up the whole year in 2 at-bats.

    • jdx19

12.1%! Sorry, forgot to take this game’s runs into account.

  66. yorktownred

Only down 2. Still 4 innings to go. Still winnable.

    • jdx19

This feels like one of those games where a 2R HR is gonna be needed.

    • Pete Rose

Ike Davis just had his entire season in 1 AB – too bad it was against Mike Leake and the Reds.

  67. hof13

Need to get Liriano out of the game. Pirates pen is worn down. This is an important inning pitch-wise for Liriano.

    • jdx19

Should go 7 easily, and 8 innings if next inning is easy.

  68. Pete Rose

Let’s get some ducks on the pond for mez.

  69. jdx19

Finally! Bruce trying to beat the shift! haha! I like it, to be honest.

  70. jdx19

Bruce 0 for 14 against Liriano.

If the bunt is good enough on the first pitch, why not on the 2nd? They didn’t move… the shift was still on…

  71. Pete Rose

Somebody want to wake up Jay Bruce? Darn Mez is probably going to lead off another inning.

  72. Pete Rose

mez leads off the 7th – that’s what the 7th hitter does, followed by a hitter that can’t get off the highway 1##.

  73. Sparky

How bout giving Bruce a night off like this and slam the Heisy in there. Just saying.

    • jdx19

That would be too forward thinking. I like Price a lot more than Dusty, I really do, but he hasn’t displayed Maddon levels of thought in regards to lineups.

      • RedsAk19

Joe Maddon is one of a kind when it comes to making out the lineup card. You won’t find anyone else like him

  74. Steve Mancuso

On a night when the Pirates bullpen is shot, the Reds are letting Liriano pitch deep into this game.

  75. Sparky

Still a close game here. Hard to believe 4 runs will win it.

  76. doublenohitter

Reds only get 2 outs this inning, since Cozart has to bat. It’s like softball when you have only 9 players so you have the automatic out.

  77. jas428

Why no Heisey vs Liriano? or has that been covered? Noticing Price does not play matchups the same way Dusty did.

    • Sparky

Heisey only spells Ludwick and the Hammy. Don’t know why.

  78. yorktownred

There’s a break. Come on Zack.

  79. charlottencredsfan

Lead-off man on, have to find a way to plate him.

  80. jdx19

Ten pitch ABs that don’t end in walks. Pretty crazy.

  81. jdx19

We’re getting some MAJOR luck here. Have to capitalize.

  82. Steve Mancuso

I’d pinch hit for Billy Hamilton here.

  83. charlottencredsfan

We need to have BHam come up big here.

  84. jdx19

Fly Ball Hamilton strikes again. Not so bad when there’s a duck on 3rd.

  85. charlottencredsfan

Billy gets it done . MVPs turn.

  86. jdx19

Votto and Bruce against Liriano is tragic. Votto’s homer last week notwithstanding.

  87. Steve Mancuso

Liriano good for another innings at only 93 pitches. Pirates bullpen only has to cover one inning probably.

    • jdx19

They said on the broadcast they believe Melancon to be the “closer” tonight.

  88. charlottencredsfan

Billy’s third SF already this year. Drew Stubbs exceeded that only once in his career: 2010 he had 6.

    • jdx19

Making outs isn’t really a great thing. Cozart led the NL last year in combined sacrifices. It’s more of a silver lining.

      • charlottencredsfan

Disagree, it is far better to score a run with an out than to do nothing with it. Would you feel better if we were down by 2 runs?

      • jdx19

That wasn’t my statement. You compared Billy’s numbers to Stubbs’ season numbers, meaning, I thought, you were comparing a general circumstance.

Yes, in that situation, a run is good. Although, a walk or hit would have been better since you need 2 runs. And this is not an opinion. Since 1993, you empirically score more runs in that inning with a walk or hit than a sac fly

But we’ll agree to agree this time. I like the run in this game, but I don’t like sac flies as much as walks or hits in general.

      • jdx19

haha! I’ll agree to agree here again with BP on third. I’d definiely take a sac fly here.

      • charlottencredsfan

My point was Stubbs K’d so much, he didn’t come big in those situations unless he did get a hit. Some people seem to miss Stubbs and I can’t understand it. Sure a walk or hit would have been better but the next best thing happened.

      • jdx19

Fair enough! I definitely am not in the camp that misses Stubbs. 😉

  89. AnnapolisHoosier

The good news is that Price still has his challenge. So dumb not to use it when he was clearly safe. The thing is, if you are right you get it back anyway. Runner at second nobody out good chance of scoring a run. How much are the Reds down?

  90. Sparky

Liriano didn’t hustle down the line…..Maybe Clint will bench him for not running it out.

  91. charlottencredsfan

Another lead-off man on. Come on Reds we can beat this guy.

    • mayerjw2

      Tell me that’s a Miracle reference…

  92. charlottencredsfan

    Seeing-eye single. Yes sir!

  93. yorktownred

Todd!!!!! Need to cash in here.

  94. Sparky

OK~ I am friggin loving this 1st to 3rd stuff the REDS are doing. Run baby Run!

  95. charlottencredsfan

  96. jdx19

SO, if we were Pirates fans, we’d be LAMBASTING Hurdle for taking Liriano out against Bruce. Bruce is 0-14 lifetime against Liriano. I love it!

    • charlottencredsfan

You are so right, a hit is far, far better than a hit there! Told yoiu 4 runs would not get it. Now let’s win this game.

  97. Pete Rose

Let’s do some real damage here

  98. charlottencredsfan

Walking to load the bases for Mes.

  99. RedsAk19

Wait I thought the game was over when Ike Davis hit a grand slam?

  100. jdx19

Devin is unconscious. Although, another terrible decision by our third base coach. That ball was CRUSHED and Marte has a good arm.

Really, that’s like 4-5 runs already our 3rd base coach has erased. Pretty terrible.

    • jdx19

I’m more mad the more I think of it. Someone needs to tell him (what’s his name again?) the ENTIRE TEAM IS SLOW, except Hamilton and some bench players. So frustrating.

Still could have bases loaded and 0 out. Instead, 1st and 2nd with 1 out.

      • jdx19

2nd and 3rd. At least they moved up. That’s good.

  101. RedsAk19

And this is why you save your challenge…

    • AnnapolisHoosier

You save your challenge to challenge something when he’s clearly out and not use it when he’s clearly safe? Got ya.

  102. jcredlegs

This 3rd base coach of ours leaves a lot to be desired.

  103. ToddAlmighty

Sure glad Price wasted that challenge on a play where Bruce was out rather than use it when Mesoraco was clearly safe at 2nd with zero outs.

  104. Steve Mancuso

Why send the runner on a close play with NO outs?

    • jdx19

There’s no explanation other than he doesn’t have the slightest clue which sport he’s coaching.

  105. hof13

Bruce was in there if his bottom foot was on the ground instead of up in the air. I dont have a problem sending Bruce there.

    • jcredlegs

I do. Never ever send the runner with nobody out if it’s even remotely close. Terrible decision. Hope we don’t need that run.

      • AnnapolisHoosier

No reason to send him there. NONE

  106. hoosierdad

Mez could go 0 for his next 13 and STILL be hitting .400. Amazing start to the season for him. PLEASE move him up in the order.

  107. charlottencredsfan

These are two big ducks out there.

  108. Sparky

They were gonna intentionally walk Cozy till they realized it was Cozy….LOL! Pop up.

  109. VaRedsFan

bruce gone to LF each of the last two games. That is good, smart hitting

  110. jdx19

The situation immediately following the Mesoraco base hit is akin having the bases loaded with 0 outs and scoring no runs.

    Thanks again, third base coach.

(This will be my last comment on him. I promise. I’m sure I wear thin on you guys with the multiple posts. I apologize.)

  111. Ed Lambert

You absolutely send Bruce with the worst hitter in baseball in n deck. Took a perfect throw.

    • AnnapolisHoosier

With two outs, yes. With no outs,no.

  112. ToddAlmighty

You know, Heisey didn’t deliver, but I find it awful hard to get upset over any AB’s results when it’s a 10 pitch AB.

  113. AnnapolisHoosier

How many guys have the Reds had thrown out at home this year? Seems like a lot.

    • ToddAlmighty

6 is the number that’s coming to mind for some reason.

    • jdx19

Nope. Time to have him go back to lefties, maybe.

  114. Steve Mancuso

Parra pitched yesterday – not very well and threw 33 pitches.

    • jdx19

Steve, are you convinced Price was pulling the bullpen strings for Dusty last year? I am. He’s been pretty atrocious all year.

      • Steve Mancuso

Dusty would never have used Parra against McCutchen. Baker would have matched up and brought in a RHP for McCutchen then Parra or Marshall against Alvarez and then another RHP for the rest of the inning.

      • jcredlegs

Which would have been the way to go in this particular situation.

  115. AnnapolisHoosier

    Plus McCutheon kills Parra

  116. VaRedsFan

    Cutch was 6-14 vs. Parra….now 7-15

  117. Tae Yun

price should have had diff pitcher than Parra, given history w/ McCutchen. Both managers stunk in BP management

  118. VaRedsFan

Why don’t our pitchers pitch to Cutch like others pitch to Votto?

  119. ToddAlmighty

Parra’s looking pretty awful lately. I don’t like it… I do hope Price realizes that LeCure is THE guy in the bullpen though.

  120. jcredlegs

Hurdle hands us the game. Price and 3rd base coach hand it right back. Why in the world was Parra facing McCutchen?

  121. Tae Yun

I tell you, Price really has not shown me much yet…. what’s his philosophy on his decisions? surely not statistics.. if he did, he would not have had parra there against their mVP

    • jdx19

So far, the only difference I’ve seen is Votto hitting 2nd. He seems exactly like Dusty other than that. So far…

      • Sparky

I see a different team attitude, With different guys stepping up and also a lot more aggressive team. Not Dusty at all. Now I didn’t say he’s not frustrating in some of his decisions.

  122. Tae Yun

i knew not getting more runs in 8th might come back to haunt us…
    let’s stop the bleeding

  123. Ed Lambert

Although he couldn’t get the Cub hitters out yesterday, why use Parra in a mop up role yesterday?

  124. Tae Yun

be careful here. parra doesn’t have it tonight… don’t let this get out of hand Price

  125. RedsfanPa

Parra?? Again?? Really?? Come on Price! : /

  126. charlottencredsfan

    JJ Hoover???

  127. Tae Yun

i guess Price’ philosophy is keep letting bad pitchers pitch until they get themselves out of MLB — ondrusek, christiani, partch, etc… Parra, not yet, but keep doing what he’s doing this first month, maybe.

    i don’t get Price’s BP management….

    • ToddAlmighty

I do need to point out that Partch had a 0.00 ERA when he got optioned to AAA to make space for Marshall.

      • Tae Yun

and you think that short stint makes my opinion change, after seeing him last year? please!!

      • ToddAlmighty

Mesoraco had a 77 OPS+ last season. Changes can happen in the offseason. Not saying Partch was great in his stint this season, but he wasn’t toxic to put in the game.

I’d rather have him right now than whatever person kidnapped and is now impersonating Manny Parra his last four appearances.

  128. AnnapolisHoosier

The manager and third base coach has KILLED the Reds tonight.

  129. charlottencredsfan

Snider is sporting a pretty nice shiner.

  130. CP (@nomoresalads)

When you have a poor bullpen, there really aren’t any good choices for Price.

Also, keep in mind that the Reds spent somewhere between 1/3-1/4 of their budget on this awful bullpen. Money well spent…

    • charlottencredsfan

They have Sam, Brox and Sean available. There is zero excuse.

      • CP (@nomoresalads)

Reds appear to being super careful with Marshall. I’m down with Lecure, although he hasn’t looked like himself lately either.

Broxton? lol…what league are you watching? I don’t think Broxton knows how to throw two innings…

      • charlottencredsfan

I’d take Brox over JJ any day. Sam may have not looked himself but he has looked better than anyone else.

      • CP (@nomoresalads)

        Meant to say this…

I think Price just went with the guy he views as their best reliever. Which isn’t a terrible strategy with bad bullpens.

  131. hof13

That wasn’t a bad pitch by HOover. Good hitting. Get this guy out and no harm done.

    • charlottencredsfan

      Bullpen management, yuckier.

  132. AnnapolisHoosier

When was the last time the Reds gave up two grand slams in the same game? Hoover is a grand slam machine.

  133. RedsfanPa

Are you serious?….this bullpen is going to blow this game . Should’ve left Leake in.

  134. jdx19

How about some strikes, JJ. Gotta take your chances now. BABIP is your friend.

  135. vegastypo

So the Pirates are supposed to have a limited bullpen, plus they used four pinch hitters that inning, one announced, three more who actually came to the plate. Gotta beat these guys. they can’t have much left,

  136. VaRedsFan

Disaster averted…we were lucky Mercer was batting

  137. jcredlegs

I’m still not convinced that Bryan Price isn’t in over his head. Very questionable judgment so far in my estimation.

    • charlottencredsfan

Just for the bullpen. He’ll get better – it’s survival.

      • jcredlegs

I would’ve thought pitching decisions would be a strength.

  138. Ed Lambert

Billy can’t bunt well yet. The drag up the line needs to be a weapon when he’s hitting LH.

    • jdx19

He’s terrible. He’s got the lowest success % of any hitter in the majors who has at least 1 bunt hit.

  139. jdx19

Votto going 0-5 with no walks is a pretty rare feat. He’s officially out of his hot streak. Hopefully his cold streak that started in Chicago is short.

  140. jdx19

When’s the last time Votto and BP had a good game together? Seems like they are almost always opposites at the plate.

  141. jcredlegs

Looks like BP’s back is better.

  142. ToddAlmighty

Frazier has been on base 5/5 times today. Mesoraco has been on base 4/4 times today. Sure would be nice if they hit somewhere near each other seeing as how Frazier only had 1 run scored and Mesoraco only has 1 RBI…

    • jdx19

Mesoraco probably shouldn’t get credit for reaching on a routine groundball to the SS, but I agree with your point. Votto/Bruce/Mesoraco/Frazier should all be in some order with BP and Ludwick elsewhere.

  143. jdx19

Their AAA pitcher got the job done against the top of our order. Kudos to him.

  144. Sparky

1st to 3rd baby! Love it. Thats how we go’

  145. jcredlegs

Pirates are very good at defensive positioning. Bruce smoked that ball but McCutchen was right there.

    • jdx19

He hit it pretty much dead center. Every CF in the majors makes that play.

    • jdx19

Better him than Ondrusek, I still believe.

  146. VaRedsFan

A good inning by Hoover here would work wonders on his confidence

  147. jdx19

Walk to the winning run. Cool. No doubt in my mind what’s about to happen here. Hope I’m wrong.

  148. Logic

Is there a reason why teams don’t do batting order by batting average, descending, every game? Isn’t that statistically your best bet? One day someone’s going to try that revolutionary idea and win games…

  149. Spro

you mean, walking the winning run into scoring position..

  150. Steve Mancuso

How can Price not have someone warming up in the bullpen? This is just flat awful managing of the bullpen.

  151. charlottencredsfan

Price is asleep at the switch.

  152. jdx19

Why. Is. Hoover. In. The. Game. GET HIM OUT.

A smash to Marte, then walk, walk. Shameful, Brian Price. Shameful.

Oh, F. Just showed Ondrusek in the pen…

  153. jcredlegs

JJ Hoover needs a tour of duty in Louisville to get his head straight. He just flat sucks right now.

  154. vegastypo

so, are LeCure, Marshall and even Broxton on paternity leave or something? urgency?

    • charlottencredsfan

This really is Prices Achilles Heal.

  155. jas428

Right now, realistically, can Reds win close games with the condition of bullpen?

  156. Steve Mancuso

I remember when Sam LeCure pitched for the Reds. And Sean Marshall. Seems like it was just yesterday.

  157. jcredlegs

No question in my mind Bryan Price is in over his head.

  158. John Walsh

As Hoover throws ball after ball, you’d think it was the Reds who were playing with a depleted bullpen.

  159. jas428

Do the Pirates smell the kill as much as RLN does?

  160. jdx19

Aaron Boone says “…a fastball. Then an offspeed pitch.” Both were 87 MPH.

  161. jdx19

Is anyone surprised? Anyone at all? Maybe Price. Definitely not the distinguished posters of RLN. Goodnight!

  162. AnnapolisHoosier

You have got to be kidding me. MIsplay by Phillips, misplay by Mesoroco and bad managing by Price all wrapped up in one play.

  163. ToddAlmighty

Good thing LeCure, Marshall, and Broxton never pitched. At least we’re getting Parra and Hoover going.

  164. ProspectCincy

Am I wrong in thinking every other second baseman makes that play look easy? Didn’t it land directly to the left of Phillips?

  165. jcredlegs

This game was lost by the coaching staff. The 3rd base coach and Bryan Price for his bullpen management.

    • Pete Rose

Coaching staff has some soul searching to do – that’s for sure.

      • charlottencredsfan

Needs to learn quickly. Just can’t mismanage the pen so badly. Tomorrow is a new day. The good news is the team is playing very well overall.

  166. yorktownred

Bad loss. Defeats in Pittsburgh seem to be soul-crushing lately. We’ll get ’em tomorrow. Come on Johnny.

  167. jcredlegs

I guess in Price’s mind the more you make the less you have to pitch.

  168. charlottencredsfan

JJ does not warrant the respect to stay in a game where he looks so horrible. This one is squarely on Skipper Price.

  169. jas428

Ball skipped on Mes and curious that Bruce didn’t get it there without a bounce. Just unlucky all around.

  170. VaRedsFan

Ball sliced away from Phillips….come on people

    • charlottencredsfan

If a loss was ever on a manager, this is it. No sugarcoating this turkey.

      • Pete Rose

Charlotte your comments through-out the game have been spot on – and yes the Red’s manager and 3B coach definitely cost the Reds this game – big time. That 3B coach has to figure it out quickly, because he’s killing the Reds – as another poster asked – how many Reds have been thrown out at home plate less than a month into the season? And bringing in Parra to face McCluth? Horrible – where were Broxton and Marshall – the big $$$ pitchers?

      • charlottencredsfan

Thanks for the compliment. Price is a sharp cookie. He will figure it out but needs to sooner than later. Right now JJ’s confidence appears to be shot and Price isn’t helping him.. I suggest making him the long man. So you will have two: JJ and Ondru, not optimal but it looks like Chappy will be back soon.

Really like to know what Price was thinking in the 8th and 9th innings.

  171. RedsfanPa

This outcome was certain with Hoover in there! Not impressed with your decisions Mr.Price!! : /

    • Pete Rose

Price has real some explaining to do – big $$$ pitchers just sitting on their can in the Red’s bullpen while 2nd tier loses the game for the Reds. Where were Marshall and Broxton?

  172. Tae Yun

these games .. how we lose reflect that we have :
    1) bad manager not in tune w/ the game and his BP… worse, he was the pitching coach last year, and yet, what the heck is he doing? Hoover went too long
    2) field mistakes – BP should have had that, given his golden glove type of skillsets. bad bounce was tough to handle but mez should have caught it.
    3) scoring only 2 runs w/ 5 straight hits… just sad. Leake should have hit for himself there, and pitched one more inning at least…

very disappointing game against struggling team…

    • Pete Rose

The Reds could have put the Pirates on the canvas for the 8 count – pretty sure the Pirates were glad they weren’t playing the Brew Crew – with a real manager.

  173. renbutler

Sorry, Dusty haters, but tonight was stupider than ANYTHING I ever saw in the previous six seasons.

    • Pete Rose

That 3B coach is atrocious – where in the world did he come from?

      • jdx19

Don’t know, but if his runs destroyed were translated into WAR like a position player, he’d be worth -0.9 WAR or so, given the amount of outs we’ve had a the plate this year that are likely a byproduct of him being terrible.

    • charlottencredsfan

Difference being this is Prices 21st game managing……………ever.

      • AnnapolisHoosier

Is it really that difficult though to make some of these decisions?

      • jdx19

As much as I hate the management of this game, probably yes, it is that tough. Price has to manage personalities and morale, as well. I think that’s what takes time. He’s gotta be smart enough to know LeCure, Marshall, and even Broxton are better than Hoover, Parra, and Ondrusek. At least, I hope.

    • jdx19

I think it is becoming abundantly clear that Price was making the bullpen decisions for Dusty last year. So far, though 19 games, there is zero difference in BP management.

I think many of us may owe Dusty an apology letter.

      • jas428

Poignant. And other similarities. Wondering the role/fear of front office too.

    • jcredlegs

Can’t believe I’m saying this but Dusty would have done a much better job with the bullpen. Parra would never have been in there to face McCutchen. Just moronic on Price’s part. And Dusty is laughing all the way to the bank.

      • jdx19

Assuming Dusty was making the calls last year, he would have had Ondrusek in there. Price screwing up this game doesn’t let Dusty off the hook. Unless, of course, it was Price calling it all along.

      • jcredlegs

No, up a run going to the bottom of the eighth, Dusty would’ve brought in LeCure and then Parra for the lefties. And then Big Broxton to close.

      • jdx19

Hmm. I think you may be right in this case.

  174. Pete Rose

How many games has that 3B coach cost the Reds?

    • jdx19

Using the wRAA component of WAR, assuming he’s destroyed 5 runs (which is probably conservative), he’s been worth -0.5 WAR. 🙂

  175. BA

Hoover clearly had zero control in this game and Price didn’t even think about pulling him. I told my uncle “I’ll text you when Hoover blows it” and, as predicted, I sent him a “He blew it” message 5 minutes later. I knew it was coming and I couldn’t do a thing about it. Yeesh.

  176. kywhi1

Count me among those who can’t believe Bryan Price left J.J. Hoover in the game, especially after he had given up the two walks.

  177. jcredlegs

If Marshall is not prepared to pitch 2 days in a row he should not be on the active roster.

    • jdx19

Bingo. A lefty won the game against a struggling righty with Marshall on the bench. This comment should make the recap.

Reminds me of the game on a Sunday last yaer where a lefty (Walker, maybe?) hit a walk off homer against a righty when Chapman was rotting in the ‘pen.

      • Pete Rose

Not to mention that Sean Marshall costs the Reds a bundle as well as a SP (who I definitely liked immensely) who currently owns an ERA under 3.00. Dusty isn’t the only one laughing all the way to the bank, he is joined by Sean Marshall and Broxton. The Reds simply seem like they can’t get out of their own way. That top of the 8th should have been a huge one – instead they scored a measly 2 runs and then handed the game back to the reeling Pirates on a silver platter. Price’s handling of the Reds bullpen is simply atrocious.

  178. RedAlert

Deserve to lose – one of the worst relievers in game – Cozart one again cAnt drive in run with bases loaded and 1 out – horrible 3rd base coaching as well

    • ToddAlmighty

I don’t know where your “once again” comes from. Since the beginning of 2013, Cozart has had 29 AB with runners on 3rd and less than 2 outs. He is 10-29, 30 RBI.

Cozart led the NL in both sac flies and sac bunts last year. He is very good with a runner on third and less than 2 outs.

    • ToddAlmighty

Heck, even if you just look at this year, Cozart has had 9 AB this season with a runner on 3rd, less than 2 outs. He has 5 RBI.

5 RBI is how many Heiey has had on the entire season. Phillips has only had 4 on the entire season.

      • charlottencredsfan

Even better research. Can you come up with a reason JJ was left in the game? You’re good but are you that good?

      • ToddAlmighty

Due to Price’s intense jealousy over LeCure’s stache growing ability is the best I got there. Hah

    • Pete Rose

Get used to it – and you might want to add a horrible job of handling the bullpen by Price. Been yelling since the offseason that the Reds needed a more vociferous manager – Price and his laid back CA approach (product of the Bay area) isn’t working in the mid West – not by a long shot. And sadly a lot more ‘less than stellar’ managing and coaching is on its way – as these guys are not going anywhere anytime soon. Reds should have blown it open in the top of the 8th – and to hand it right back to the Pirates based on a stupid move by the manager is a cardinal sin of baseball.

  179. wildwestlv

BP jumped higher in that girl’s photobomb.

  180. jcredlegs

Clint Hurdle gift wrapped this game for the Reds. But Bryan Price did him one better. Unbelievable.

  181. RedAlert

For a gut who has been an excellent pitching coach for the Reds , his bullpen misadventures leave a lot to be desired – absolutely mind- boggling

  182. RedAlert

For a guy who has been an excellent pitching coach for the Reds , his bullpen misadventures leave a lot to be desired – absolutely mind- boggling

  183. BA

Boy, Hoover sure did suck in this one. Thank you, thank you. I’ll be here all night. Be sure to tip your waitress.

  184. RedAlert

Bryan Price not impressing at this time – evident he is a “rookie” manager

  185. RedAlert

6.5 games out and we are not even at the end of April – just depressing
