Rainy day here in St. Augustine, FL. Gonna have to hunker down and watch me some winning REDS! baseball.

  2. ohiojimw

Sean Marshall activated and Partch back to AAA per several sources.

If Marshall can be effective this is a big plus for the Reds. I think to be effective Marshall has to be able to lead with his fastball and hard breaking pitch to set his softer breaking stuff up as his put away pitch. He he comes out and is dinking around with an assortment of slower and slower curves, that probably is not a good sign,

    • Sparky

He should be ready! as we aren’t getting killed by our bullpen….no need to rush him. I look for him to be effective for a week or two till the soreness returns.

      • ohiojimw

I tend to share your point of view, unfortunately for the Reds and most of all Marshall himself. If he can be the bridge to get them back to Chapman without Parra being blown out, he will have served a valuable purpose.

  3. NWOhioRedFan

Let’s see…..Brandon is ok, Marshall is back and Chris Heisey in the starting line up. Slowly but surely, the Redlegs are getting healthy in the pitching department and the bats are starting to come around…..Let’s go Redlegs!

  4. charlottencredsfan

These games are always a little scary as the match-up appears so lopsided. Reds can not afford to lose many mismatches. Hoping Cingrani continues his outstanding pitching. Good to see BP in the lineup and the Marshall news.

  5. Ethan

Good to see BP in the lineup. I love the lineup, except I would switch Frazier and Mez. Here’s to another solid pitching performance and to Joey Votto batting second! Let’s BEAR down and beat the Cubs!

    • Kurt Frost

      I would move 5 and 7 up two and 3 down 4..

  6. Earl Nash

The way people were talking about Sean Marshall on the site a few weeks back, they were making it sound like he was done and going to be out for months. I’m glad Marshall is back and hope that he can be effective. He is a good and smart pitcher.

  7. Jason Linden

if Marshall is back, that’s great news. Shoulder injuries have such a horrible history of ending careers that I will openly admit to being afraid that he was done.

  8. spro

Grande actually said Cin-grah-ni instead of Cin-granny! I’m optimistic about this game already!

  9. jdx19

It sort of looks like BP is grimacing each time he swings.

    • Kurt Frost

I grimace each time he swings with someone on first and less than two outs. #datdudegidp

      • jdx19

Especially if it’s 18 inches out of the strike zone! We’ve only seen 1 AB, but I sort of question the decision to have him in the lineup, and 3rd, at that, a day after he tweaked his back.

  10. Eric the Red

I wonder if BP was extra motivated to play today because he’s worried about being bumped back out of the 3-spot.

    • jdx19

You can’t deny he gave it 100% effort on that duck snort base-hit. Unfortunately, he looked a bit “old” going after it.

  11. jdx19

I wish stats existed on how often a guy is walked because the pitcher is worried about a base runner.

  12. ZabkaLives

Find the plate tony. That pitch count is getting too high.

    • jdx19

Yeah, it’s gonna be tough to get out of this inning with less than 32-33 unless they start putting balls in play for outs.

      • jdx19

40 isn’t looking out of the question now!

      • jdx19

Wow! 30 pitches for 1 out, 1 pitch for 2 outs. Love baseball! And not much action on this thread on a Saturday afternoon! 😉 I guess folks are out enjoying the nice (hopefully) weather!

  13. jdx19

Welp, that 5-hit streak is probably done today. Let’s hope the Reds bats are awake.

  14. jdx19

How about that double after a Votto and Bruce single? Ladies and gents, your #7 hitter!

    • Ethan

Exactly what I mentioned before the game. Move Mez to the five spot to unclog the bases that Joey and Jay clog so well.

  15. RedAlert

Sorry – this isn’t saying much, but would rather have Santiago’s bat in the order than Cozart – just simply cannot get it done at the plate

    • jdx19

      Career #s
      Santiago: .242/.311/.329
      Cozart: .247/.282/.384

Sorta darned if you do, darned if you don’t.

  16. preacherj

I saw a pic of Brandon wearing a T-shirt that said “I’m glovin’ it”. It was a twitter handle, apparently. Pretty cool. As I type, Cingrani just gave up a Johnson. Good thing our bullpen got a little improved today…..

  17. preacherj

Fay just said that if Marshall was healthy Parra might have been the closer coming out of ST.

  18. ProspectCincy

Cingrani has not hit 90 on the gun today … I’m very nervous.

    • jdx19

He’s just off today. No doubt about it. But, 2 runs isn’t insurmountable. But we need to get going. Edwin Jackson is talented and seems to have better control today than normal.

  19. preacherj

Bunt base hit to start the inning with Votto coming up. Yes, please, I’ll have more of that.

  20. preacherj

Drats. Good d, for once, by the Stupid Cubs ™

  21. jdx19

Today is just gonna be one of those days…

  22. preacherj

Inning was over before I was done typing.

  23. RedAlert

Reds again making a below average pitcher look like Cy Young

  24. jdx19

I guess Phillips doesn’t know that unwritten rule about not swinging at pitch 3 of the inning with 2 outs. Oh, well.

  25. ProspectCincy

    3 pitches and 3 outs … and that’s including a Hamilton lead-off single.

Long day / at least they gave Tony a 2 minute rest between innings.

  26. jas428

    what’s Votto’s time to 1st base roughly?

    • jdx19

I don’t think anyone’s ever taken the time to time him. Easy enough to say “below average.”

  27. jdx19

We should appreciate what we just saw, statistically speaking. The inning started with the the best possible case (guy gets on base) and ended with the literal worst possible outcome that exists amongst the multiple millions of scenariois; a 3 pitch inning.

I’d venture a guess that is the kind of thing that happens once every 20 years.

  28. RedAlert

Tony doesn’t have it – don’t wait till it’s too late Price

    • jdx19

Welp, here we go. Sacks jacked and 1 down.

  29. preacherj

Cingrani has made some nice pitches where he has the guy way out front, but he is very wild today.

    • jdx19

Also seems to be having most borderliners called balls.

  30. preacherj

He was missing with his fastball, now it looks like he can’t spot the change up either.

  31. CP (@nomoresalads)

Price isn’t going to blow his bullpen up in game 2 of a 10 game road trip unless he absolutely has to. This isn’t a playoff game. Cingrani has to figure stuff out on his own.

  32. preacherj

I don’t know how Cingrani didn’t just hit that guy. Get. bullpen. busy.

  33. jdx19

I can’t help but feel 1 run given up each inning is sort of a silver lining with how many hard hit balls the Cubs have had and how poor Tony’s command is.

  34. ATLRedleg

That wasn’t good, but a better team would have a larger lead than 3-0. We can still get back in this one. (long time lurker)

  35. ProspectCincy

I feel like Tony isn’t the pitcher he was last year; largely in part because of the higher frequency of off-speed pitches.

Also pretty clear that when you get to him in the 1st inning; he doesn’t have the same intensity. Hope he can figure it out.

    • jdx19

10.38 K’s per 9 and an opponent’s average of .231 not counting today. He’s been fine through 3 starts. Today, however…

  36. jdx19

Second inning in a row with leadoff hitter on base. Time to go to work.

  37. preacherj

Lots of swinging considering the walk in front of you.

    • jdx19

I’ve given up on any Reds having any sort of plate discipline except Joey and Jay, with the book still being out on Hamilton and Mesoraco.

  38. RedAlert

Frazier could not have touched that with a 10 foot pole

  39. preacherj

I keep waiting for Todd to will himself into another ground rule double from the bench.

  40. jas428

No adjustment there by Heisey on same three pitches.

  41. RedAlert

Ok – this is EDWIN JACKSON pitching – time to make a move!

    • VaRedsFan

Didn’t Jackson throw a 2 hitter against us while with Nats?

  42. ATLRedleg

    Let’s see some Billy magic!!!!

    • jdx19

What is unbelievable about an injured BP striking out? I don’t even think you should be surprised! 🙂

  43. jdx19

I love having injured players bat 3rd.

  44. CP (@nomoresalads)

I thought BP just had back spasms? He either currently has back spasms, or he doesn’t? (and I can almost guarantee he isn’t playing with back spasms). It’s not a nagging injury…

    • jdx19

Believing the Reds medical staff is a mistake. He was grimacing on each swing in the 1st inning and looked slow and lethargic chasing down that Bonifacio single. I don’t know, you’re probably right. Either way, he looks “slower and older” today than usual to my eyes.

  45. ATLRedleg

Still only 4 hits, the record stands.

  46. CP (@nomoresalads)

This is why Tony Cingrani is so good…he looks completely awful on the mound, and ends up only giving up 3 runs. He isn’t an inning eater, but the guy produces.

    • jdx19

Agreed. Seems like the kinda guy that could lose a no-hitter via walks and an untimely error or something.

  47. Ethan

Let’s go, brethren; let’s start something!!! What do you say here, Bruce?

  48. VaRedsFan

Is Cingrani on an innings limit this year.

    • jdx19

Doubtful. But he’ll self-impose an innings limit due to him likely averaging around 5 2/3 to 6 innings per start.

  49. jdx19

Todd’s BB% is as high as it has been since single A, and his K% is as low as it’s been since AA. Those might be good signs for him, even with his current slump.

  50. ATLRedleg

    Heisey struggles with breaking balls.

    • ATLRedleg

Ha, that’s what you get for throwing him a fastball.

  51. RedAlert

Time to switch Todd and Mes in the order

  52. VaRedsFan

Reds roster vs. Edwin Jackson .228/.267/.378

  53. jas428

Progress…awesome. Wore down Jackson and got his pitch. Good AB.

    • Pete Rose

You have to be kidding – Mez is still hitting .500 – incredible !!

    • Pete Rose

Time to move Mez up to 5th in the batting order – with Frazier hitting 6th and for the time being either Heisey or Ludwick hitting 7th.

    • VaRedsFan

they knew most certainly that a PH would be coming

  54. VaRedsFan

we’ll take the rbi groundout from Cozart

  55. jdx19

I’ll take that from Cozart every time. I fear pop ups.

    • Pete Rose

Cozart has hit the ball a little harder today – glad to see him get his stick on the ball.

  56. RedAlert

Cozart still brutal – drive in run but just pitiful plate approach

    • ATLRedleg

That was very tongue in cheek…Cozart has not looked good this year.

  57. VaRedsFan

come on Pena, 1 more duck on the pond.

  58. RedAlert

Used to light up this guy when he was with the Lastros

  59. RedAlert

Oh no – “longball” Logan in a close game

    • Pete Rose

REDALERT – You called it – that hurts big time

  60. RedAlert

How Ondrusuck manages to stay on 40 man roster is beyond me – must have some pictures on somebody

  61. RedAlert

Ok – I’ll give him props for that !

  62. jdx19

WOW. That’s a fortunate turn of events on a terrible throw!

  63. Pete Rose

Man, what a big difference – thought Logan was going to put men at 1B and 2B with no outs instead – big time DP – kudos to Logan, Mez and Phillips.

    • jdx19

Logan struck out a rookie with no plate discipline. Not that hard of a feat.

  64. RedAlert

And there u have it !!!!! Thanks again Logan – bring back Partch

  65. jdx19

Darwin Barney, folks. Logan F’ing Ondrusek SHOULD NEVER BE IN A CONTESTED GAME>

    • ProspectCincy

I feel like we say that about too many Reds bull-pen pitchers.

      Partch / Bell / Hoover / Ondrusek.

God I can’t way for Chapman to come back w/ Simon in the bullpen. Can get rid of this incompetence.

  66. Ethan

Wow, Ondrusek! To Barney? Let’s go! Geeeeez…..

    • jdx19

Because Baker/Price were/are blind? I can’t think of any other explanation.

      • Tae Yun

it’s not just this game, i have seen it time and time again, blowing up like this….
i would understand if we are down by 7 to 10 runs and we just need to get the game over w/….. a sacrificial pithing… but down 1 run, late in the game, we need critical stop and voila, Price brings in Ond? i never get that (not last year and not this year)

  67. redleg75

cause walt saw fit to give him a two year deal. good job walt.

  68. Tae Yun

why did Baker and now Price think Ond is a major league caliber? i have not seen it in two years. is there something they see that I don’t see in games? everytime he comes in, i feel like we are going to let 1-2 runs in. it would be one thing if we are up by 5-10 runs, then maybe…..

  69. Bill Lack

This is on Price. You simply cannot bring Ondrusek in, once you’ve cut the lead to 1. If they’d have still been down 3…ok, but when you cut the lead, he’s simply not the guy, in addition to the fact that he hasn’t pitched for 11 days. Horrible.

  70. Ethan

A HR followed by a walk. Nice recipe for success!

  71. Tae Yun

need to shut it down… 3 runs already is a high wall for this offensive challenged “machine” …

  72. ProspectCincy

Ondrusek just gave up as many hits in 2/3rds of an inning as Cingrani did for the game. And Cingrani sucked!

  73. jas428

Losing a game to the Cubs is like bogeying a birdie hole,

  74. Shchi Cossack

I really do not understand why the Reds (front office & coaches) have this fascination with Ondrusek. He is a bad pitcher and has been a bad pitcher, yet he was given a 2-year, guaranteed contract and continues to be utilized in high leverage situations, to the Reds’ detriment.

    • Pete Rose

bad, bad decision by Price – Christiani should have started and pitched the 6th

    • RedAlert

Agree completely – we the common fan have known this for quite some time – how in the world can you continue to bring this guy in a ballgame in a high leverage situation – wasted roster spot!

  75. Pete Rose

Was that On-dru-suck leaving the mound?

  76. jdx19

Five of six batters safely reach against Ondrusek. Now Christiani.

There’s no doubt in my mind now that Price was making the bullpen decisions for Dusty last year. I need to write an apology letter to Dusty Baker.

  77. preacherj

Guess this is why going to the bullpen might not have been the right move after all.

  78. Pete Rose

ondrusek should not pitch in one run games – EVER

    • jdx19

Eddie Taubensee jersey! You, sir, have the best avatar on the site.

  79. jdx19

I vote walk, walk, walk, Jay Bruce grand slam.

  80. RiverCity Redleg

Like Baker, price doesn’t seem to value a one run deficit as much as a one run lead. Which is a mistake, IMO.

    • jdx19

We may be seeing evidence that Price was advising Baker on the bullpen decisions all along.

  81. preacherj

It’s days like this where I really miss Carlos Marmol coming in the game.

  82. preacherj

See what happens when you hit in on the ground, Billy?

    • ProspectCincy

Opened the game with a line-drive out too … this kid is just killer away from Cincinnati.

  83. jdx19

Here’s some of that BABIP luck ERICNYC was looking for! 🙂 No more fly balls, young Billy!

  84. Jersey Masher

Is today, “bring the fired skipper” to work day? Dusty must be in the dugout. Ondrusek? Who didn’t see that coming from a mile away besides our manager?

  85. Ethan

Votto’s hits look like those of Tony Gwynn, smooth and silky!

  86. Pete Rose

For those keeping track of the B Train – he is hitting .279 since the opening series against the Cardinals (0-12 since 12-43).

    • Pete Rose

And for those unfamiliar with the B Train – he improves as he adjusts to the league and the level of play

  87. preacherj

I get being concerned about Billy on the basepath, but don’t you think it’s a little too much when you are up by four? Have to pay attention to the hitter. Not that I’m complaining or anything….

    • jdx19

Don’t we all. I wonder if he’ll stay 7th long enough to hit a slump so the team can say “See? No reason to bat him 4 or 5.”

  88. ProspectCincy

1/2/4 hitters have been on base 10 of 12 times today.

)#(*@#!( Phillips and Frazier have been holes.

    • jdx19

Take away Frazier’s two timely home runs and we could be talking about him in the same sentence as Cozart this year.

      • ProspectCincy

Very true. Hamilton now hitting better than Todd on the season.

  89. RedAlert

Ashamed that we are now rallying after 4 run deficit ( should have been only one )after horrible bullpen management by Price

  90. preacherj

Wind going the wrong way for Todd there. Almost.

    • jdx19

Cubs playing with fire. Three balls in the dirt with a man on 3rd.

  91. preacherj

Cubs will Cub. Reds will TOOTBLAN

    • RiverCity Redleg

That’s the worst part. He ran us out with our hottest hotter coming up. So frustrating.

  92. Ethan

Buzzard luck! At least get got one more.

    • RiverCity Redleg

Not really. The ball bounced tight back to Rizzo. Shoulda never ran.

  93. RiverCity Redleg

TOOTBLAN. Reds just won’t accept a gift.

  94. jdx19

Mike Olt doing everything he can down there to throw the game away for the Cubs. He was a highly touted prospect for Texas because of his power; I can now see why they didn’t have a problem letting him go.

  95. Ethan

Don’t judge me, but what does tootblan mean?

    • jdx19

Thrown out on the bases like a nincompoop.

    • Ethan

I thought he was just playing catch down the right field line. The Cubs’ bullpen is sorry.

  96. jdx19

I believe now 7 of 9 batters have reached base safely against Ondrusek/Christiani.

  97. VaRedsFan

2 runs we just got…poof…up in smoke

  98. Ethan

Is Chicago the new Cape Canaveral? The batters’ box has turned into a launching pad.

  99. jdx19

I don’t know about you guys, I love using our worst pitchers while the best ones ride pine. See ya’ll tomorrow. I have better stuff to do.

  100. Tae Yun

now remind me why Christiani is in there for us ? geez… Cubbies killing our minor league pitchers

  101. RedAlert

Bullpen just Brutal !!!!! – clean house

    • Pete Rose

No, simply get healthy and then send the slackers elsewhere.

  102. preacherj

All the homers have come from the 7,8,9 hitter in the Stupid Cub ™ lineup.

  103. Pete Rose

On TV they were talking about who was being sent down after Reds activated Marshall today. Any votes it should have been Christiani? The Cubs have butchered both of them today.

  104. Tae Yun

sorry but what the heck is PRICE doing w/ these two picthers… they are pitching way too much.. do we not have a bull pen other than these two names? hard to watch

  105. VaRedsFan

Is it me, or does Mez drop/miss a lot of balls behind the plate?

  106. preacherj

Almost gave up another one to Barney. Sheesh.

  107. RedAlert

Ondru and Christiani ought to be the last 2 options EVER out if the pen – mop up only – these 2 have effectively put this game out of reach

  108. Tae Yun

you know we are bad, when the Cubbies bottom of the order are lighting up against our best minor leaguers…. just don’t get what Price is doing… other than trying to prove something? that he can coach up any pitchers? Cingrani in his bad day was night and day better than these two jokers….

i feel like we got Dusty #2 here… Price has not shown much so far

  109. doublenohitter

Cubs haven’t scored 5 runs all week and the Reds bullpen give up 5 in 2 innings.
    Can we call up Jumbo?

    • RedAlert

Yes – he has to be better than either of these 2

  110. Sparky

Ondro is just bad. I liked the guy a few years ago, but he is no longer clutch. Sad for the reds.

  111. Ryan Lykins (@ryan_lykins)

Not sure why Price is seemingly doing the same thing Dusty did last year and using the worst pitchers in some tight games here early. Cost a couple games already and seemingly every time they allow runs. Maybe Price sees something working with these guys everyday but it hasn’t worked out at all.

    • Shchi Cossack

Wouldhave been nice for that solid inning pitched to have been the 6th rather than after the game was out of hand.

  112. RedAlert

This loss is on Price – bullpen mismanagement reminiscent of last year
