Down on the Farm as a daily feature with coverage of all the minor league games will not be airing here as it has in the past. In this new weekly feature column, however, I’ll attempt to fill the void a bit by highlighting some of the happenings from each team in the previous week of games played. I also hope to keep you abreast of the comings and goings this season as players are promoted and demoted. I’ll also do some player analysis from time to time to help you keep up with some of the top prospects, guys to keep an eye on, and sometimes on just a guy I like and want to share my thought on. I look forward to bringing some the goings on in the minor leagues to you this season.

In the first installment of “This Week on the Farm” I want to just briefly cover who is in place to lead the Reds minor league players this year. These are the guys who will teaching the young players the “Reds Way” to play baseball and who should forming the players into being Major League ballplayers both on and off the field.

AAA Louisville Bats

Manager: Jim Riggleman
Hitting: Tony Jaramillo
Pitching: Ted Power

Jim Riggleman is an experienced baseball man who I thought would have gotten a lot more consideration in becoming the Reds Major League manager this season. He’s returning to the Bats this season and I suspect will do a great job again. I’m not familiar with Tony Jaramillo’s hitting philosophies but I can only assume he is charged with promoting the Red’s major league hitting coach’s teachings in the minors. Ted Power has drawn rave reviews as a pitching coach and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him doing the same in the Majors someday soon.

AA Pensacola Blue Yahoos

Manager: Delino DeShields
Hitting: Alex Paleaz
Pitching: Jeff Fassero

Delino DeShields seems to be a manager in the making as he marches up the ladder in the Red’s organization drawing rave reviews along the way. Alex Paleaz has been mentoring Red’s hitters in the low minors for several seasons and will now be doing so in AA. Jeff Fassero has been a pitching coach the last six season, the last two for Tennessee in the Southern League as he now joins the Reds organization.

High A Bakersfield Blaze

Manager: Pat Kelly
Hitting: Ray Martinez
Pitching: Tom Browning

Manager Pat Kelly will be managing the High A Blaze after three seasons doing the same with the Rookie level Billings club. Tom Browning has been with the Red’s organization for some time and was also with Billings last year. Ray Martinez returns as the Blaze hitting instructor.

Low A Dayton Dragons

Manager: Jose Nieves
Hitting: Luis Bolivar
Pitching: Tony Fossas

This will be Jose Nieves second year leading the Dragons. Tony Fossas will also return for his second season and Luis Bolivar, who was in the AZL last year, will be the hitting coach.

Rookie Leagues

Billings Mustangs

Manager: Dick Schofield
Hitting: Kevin Mahar
Pitching: Derrin Ebert

Dick Schofield will lead the Billings Mustangs after serving as the hitting instructor in Pensacola last year. Derrin Ebert is promoted to Bllings pitching coach from the AZL last year. Kevin Mahar will return as the hitting coach.

AZL Reds

Manager: Eli Marrero
Pitching: Elmer Dessens

I believe Eli Marrero is slated to be the AZL Reds manager with Elmer Dessens as a pitching coach. I have not heard of a hitting coach being appointed as of yet.
