Let’s recap today’s titanic struggle….
FINAL
Cincinnati 6
Arizona 2
W: M. Latos (11-4)
L: P. Corbin (5-6)
BOX SCORE
POSITIVES
–Seven strong innings for Mat Latos. He gave up just two runs on five hits. One of his final pitches in the seventh was a 96-mph fastball. The big guy is just getting it done.
–Chris Heisey also got it done today, with two homers and three RBI. Dioner Navarro went 2-4 with a homer. Mat Latos was 2-3
–Brandon Phillips also hit a homer, a bomb to deep center field.
–JJ Hoover pitched a perfect inning, striking out two.
NEGATIVES
–Drew Stubbs struck out four times. Good grief. I don’t remember the last time I saw a player struggle like this. If he’s gonna play, he really needs to be hitting eighth.
NOT-SO-RANDOM THOUGHTS
–That’s a sweep, and the Reds are the first team in the majors to win 80 games this season. It’s the fastest a Reds team has reached 80 wins since…wait for it…1976. Wow.
–Cincinnati’s magic number is 25. Also, the Houston Astros were eliminated from playoff contention today.
–The homers by Heisey and Phillips today were just crushed, both to dead center field.
–My 8-year-old son wanted to type something in the recap: “BP is awesome.”
He’s a budding baseball analyst, I tell ya’.
–Enjoy it, Reds fans.
