Let’s recap tonight’s titanic struggle….
W: J. Hoover (1-0)
L: J. Guthrie (2-3)
–I don’t know if I’m ready to call them the Nastier Boys, but this Reds bullpen is just great. JJ Hoover, Sam LeCure, Logan Ondrusek, and Sean Marshall were brilliant, allowing one hit and no runs over five and a third innings. Love it.
–Joey Votto went 2-3 with two doubles, a walk, and a run scored. Has anyone noticed that Votto is good?
–Brandon Phillips was 3-4 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBI. Is he heating up? The Reds offense hopes so.
–Devin Mesoraco hit another homer, his third. Ryan Ludwick (!) hit a pinch-hit, 3-run homer. The big blow, however, was Chris Heisey’s first big blast of the year. Heisey’s 3-run smash in the first inning gave the Reds a lead they would never surrender.
–I hate to list a negative after a blowout win like this, but Mike Leake earned a mention. Leake only lasted 3.2 innings, giving up all three Colorado runs on 9 hits and a walk. He did go 1-1 at the plate, though!
–The Reds are fun to watch right now, huh? With the win (and a St. Louis loss), Cincinnati now holds a 1.5 game lead in the NL Central. Me likey.
–Thanks, FOX and Major League Baseball, for making this a national game and blacking it out almost everywhere! I love not watching my favorite team!
–I think this was sarcasm:
Yeah, Marshall doesn’t have closer stuff.

Chris is right. Marshall is a stud and could be a great closer, no matter what Dusty Baker thinks. I guess he’s no Aroldis Chapman (who is?), but he’s better than most of the closers in the league. I’m glad he’s a Red.
I’m not unhappy about Marshall being the primary setup man, though. The way Dusty uses his bullpen, Marshall is going to get inserted into a lot of tight spots. That’s a good thing. He’s great.
–JJ Hoover picked up his first major league win tonight. Congrats, rook!
Is that good? Seems like it’s good. RT @jluckhaupt: Votto on pace for 70 doubles. MLB record is 67. #Reds

–How dare Mike Leake pitch well in his last two outings, convincing us that he was ready to turn his season around! Very inconsiderate of him.
–Reds go for another series win tomorrow in the rubber match. Mat Latos will face someone named Jamie Moyer. Must be a new pitcher the Rockies just called up….
