Welcome back to Not-So-Random Thoughts, an off-day tradition here at Redleg Nation. There was a time that I had another blog, in a different realm of the blogosphere. I used that blog to post things I found interesting, or funny things, or dumb stuff, or just talked about whatever I wanted to discuss.
I try to stick to the Reds here at the Nation, but sometimes I just can’t help myself. Off-days are a good time to indulge myself in the inane. Enjoy.
–I meant to post a link to this Toronto Sun feature on Joey Votto some time ago, but now’s as good a time as any. Votto is a unique, interesting guy, and I think you’ll be fascinated by the article. I could not be happier that he’s a Red for life.
—OMG, this made me LOL. No, seriously, I literally laughed out loud several times at these inappropriate answers given by children.
–If you’ve read these NSRT posts over the years, you’ll know that Wes Anderson (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Fantastic Mr. Fox) is, by far, my favorite film director. Tenenbaums is my favorite film (I even made a pilgrimage to Harlem, to “Archer Avenue,” the last time I was in New York). Anderson’s latest film is Moonrise Kingdom, set to be released in late May, and I’m far too excited to see it.
Here are four new clips from the film. It appears to be classic Anderson.
–If you are trying to decide which team to root for, you gotta read this. It’s a baseball fan flowchart, and it’s absolutely spot on. Also, if you are still trying to find a team, why are you reading Redleg Nation?
—The 40 Nerdiest Tattoos Ever Seen: My favorite is the MST3K one.
–This past Saturday, I DVR’d three soccer games. 2008 Chad doesn’t recognize me. (For the record, Spurs are my love, but I’ve gotten into the Columbus Crew this year for the first time. Good stuff.) If you aren’t watching soccer, you are missing out. There’s a reason it’s called the beautiful game.
–I always get a kick out of these old pics of people watching these mechanical scoreboards for big baseball games back in the early part of the last century. Shorpy (a long-time staple of NSRT) had a great one recently; check out all the hats (and click on the pic to embiggen it). Awesome.
—The worst ceremonial first pitches in history. Of course, Cincinnati mayor Mark Mallory’s disastrous first pitch is there (I’ll never tire of Eric Davis’ disgusted look), but my favorite is the Random Big Shot Executive.
—This one is only for my fellow graduates of UVa. If you aren’t a Hoo, you can safely ignore that link. If you are a Hoo, you will probably laugh at that one.
–Jack White’s solo album releases this week. I cannot wait.
–I wish Cincinnati had a team in the NHL. I’ve gotten a kick out of these playoffs. My team never makes the playoffs anymore, but I’ve been pulling for the Capitals (I used to live in DC, and we went to a Caps game a couple of weeks ago; and yes, I’m pulling for them despite the despicable Dale Hunter).
–Let’s finish up with this video. I’m an unabashed Dwayne Wade fan (and an unabashed LeBron James fan too, for what that’s worth), and this was pretty cool (tip of the cap to Mo):
–Okay, that’s enough for today. Use this as an open thread to discuss whatever is on your mind. Except for Dusty Baker. Don’t discuss Dusty today, please?
