It’s that time of year to nominate our favorite broadcaster for the Ford C. Frick Award. You have until Friday, September 30th at 5pm to nominate Joe Nuxhall via the Hall of Fame’s Facebook page. This will be the 9th year that the Hall has allowed fans to nominate 3 of the 10 finalists for this award.
The qualifications for this award have been:
Electors are asked to base their selections on four criteria: (1) longevity; (2) continuity with a club; (3) honors, including awards and national assignments, such as the World Series and All Star-Games; and (4) popularity with the fans.
There are very few on the ballot who can beat Joe in longevity and continuity with a single ballclub. While popularity is the hardest of the four criteria to measure, Joe Nuxhall is the only broadcaster to be nominated by fans 5 times in the 8 years of fan voting. He was nominated for 4 straight years from 2007 to 2010, receiving the most votes in 3 of those 4 years. Additionally, Joe was one of the three original fan-nominated broadcasters on the inaugural fan ballot back in 2004.
However, he is also the only broadcaster who was part of the original fan ballot in 2004 who has not yet been chosen by the Frick electorate to receive this award.
Lon Simmons was fan-nominated in 2004 and won that year. So far, he is the only fan nominee to receive the Ford C. Frick Award. Dave Niehaus was the other fan-nominated broadcaster in 2004 and he was later chosen to win the award in 2008 as one of the 10 finalist on the non-fan portion of the ballot. No other fan-nominated broadcaster has received this award.
Let’s get out the vote these next few days and put Nuxhall on the ballot for a 6th and hopefully final time! Use your Facebook pages, twitter accounts (#VoteNuxy) and e-mail to encourage your friends and family to support Joe Nuxhall!
