In order to finish above .500, Cincinnati needs to go 18-14 the rest of the way. With lots of games against the dregs of the National League on the remaining schedule, that scenario is a distinct possibility.

A win tonight would be a good start, and it will take a good start by Dontrelle Willis for him to get his first win in a Reds uniform. Let’s do this.

Discuss the game here. Go Redlegs.

Just once could Dusty let Hanigan catch Willis?

  2. Y-City Jim

Sounds like Phillips didn’t so much want in the leadoff spot as he wanted out of the clean-up spot.

  3. LVW

Are these idiot pitchers(Dontrelle) ever going to figure out leadoff walks eventually come back to haunt you!???????????

It’s going to take Having Ryan Hanigan behind the plate.

  4. LVW

As usual it took Dontrelle being involved in the offense for the Reds to score when he pitches.

    3 thoughts…..
#1) Can Dontrelle Willis play any position besides pitcher….he is one of our top 3 hitters.
#2) Can anyone look at more than 2 pitches?
#3) Is it just me or is Votto looking a bit disgusted every now and then, ya know, kinda like he is getting no support or effort (other than B Phillips) and is showing some displeasure with his non-verbals and body language?

technically there are a number of Reds hitters who have produced more at the plate than Phillips on the Reds. Some significantly more.

      Bruce and Hernandez
and Frazier and Alonzo in their limited AB

if we look at wRC+ Phillips is at 105

Heisey is at 104 to help put that in perspective

Bruce is at 123 which is significantly more production at the plate than 105

I’d love to hear Votto’s honest, no-holds-barred answer to what he thinks of the organization hierarchy- the disconnect between Jocketty and Baker and if he wants Baker back next year.

  7. OhioJim

@BigC in TampaTown: Not sure I would rate Dontrelle in the top 3 hitters on the team but certainly he is right up there.

If he can be signed for next year at a reasonable cost, I’d probably sign him for my 25th man just for his bat, regardless of his defensive position. Realistically, he would be the long man from the pen and a pinch hitter. Any night he wasn’t used as a long man, they would have him to come off the bench as a hitter.

Other than not wanting to be accused of copying off TLR, I can’t imagine why Dusty never bats Willis 8th ahead of the likes of Janish.

  8. BigC in TampaTown

How about Dontrelle hitting….Maybe we should put him infront of or behind Votto! Bruce you should be EMBARRASSED a 52 year old pitcher is out hitting you!!!

  9. BigC in TampaTown

B Phillips mans up yet again!!!!

  10. Dave Lowenthal

Not Reds related, but how did Lance Berkman clear waivers (widely reported to have occurred)?

He’s got a one year contract. He would fit with the Giants, who can’t hit. Arizona should have claimed him and forced the Cards to pull him back. If the Cards, say, get swept by the Brewers this week, they might just trade Berkman to the Giants or some AL team that could use a good DH.

It just doesn’t make sense to me.

  11. Robert

    @mike:
Hernandez in under .200 w/ RISP. Phillips is over .300.

Hernandez has been awful this year.

  12. mike

@Robert: there are only 4 catchers in the majors who have produced at a better rate than Hernandez this season

    Napoli, Avila, McCann and Santana

awful is not the word that would come to mind

still wish he was traded to the Giants because I’d like to see our AAA catcher get a shot and I love the way Hanigan handles our pitchers…but Hernandez’s production at the plate has been anything but awful

Hows Alonzo looking tonight? Whats the score and inning. Thanks for any info.

WTF I don’t get it, why is Alonzo even up here. By the time Dusty puts him in the Lineup he’ll have more rust then the Tin Man when Dorothy found him.

Mike, I am sorry I am from Dayton orginally and I have no idea what “wRC+” even means — if it wasnt on a baseball card back in the 70’80’s I probably dont know the stat.
Call me old fashioned but I look at Batting Average, Home runs, RBI, On Base % and that new fangled W/runners in Scoring position – which seems to be a good measure for clutch hitting.

  17. George Culver

If Tony LaRussa was there he’d swear that it was a Reds conspiracy to mess the lights and screw with his mind. But only because he hadn’t thought of it first.

  18. mike

    @BigC in TampaTown:

Weighted Runs Created (wRC) is an improved version of Bill James’ old Runs Created (RC) statistic, which attempted to quantify a player’s total offensive value and measure it by runs.

Similar to OPS+, Weighted Runs Created Plus (wRC+) measures how a player’s wRC compares with league average. League average is 100 and every point above 100 is a percentage point above league average. For example, a 125 wRC+ means a player created 25% more runs than league average.

wRC+ is also park and league adjusted, meaning you can use it to compare players that played in different years, parks, and leagues.

@BigC in TampaTown: Numbers don’t tell the whole story, their helpful but do not paint a complete picture.

    I agree Sarge – I am not a “numbers guy”…
That was just a stat I had never heard of and if Jay Bruce is a 125 rating I would expect Votto to be much higher and I was just curious.
Stat wise, if you took out Bruce’s last week and his huge May his numbers would suck…I have tired this year of hearing how great Bruce is stat wise — since I have watched nearly every game I have seen some of the poor attempts and lack of effort he exhibits at the plate. His approach and thought process at the plate is terrible.. IN MY OPINION..
and dont get me started on his potential, tired of hearing that as well!

Take out most players’ best numbers and they suck.

Numbers are objective. Human observation isn’t.

Sappelt’s second walk as a Red. Need more of that from him.

  23. Sergeant2

Caught the score on ESPN tied up 3-3 don’t know what happened or inning.

  24. Y-City Jim

Not sure I agree with that sac bunt.

  25. Steve Mancuso

The Reds just had a player who has an on-base-percentage of .464 in the past seven games give up an out and his AB for a base. Insanity.

Agree. Plus he was 2 for 4 tonight.

@BigC in TampaTown: I agree with you 100% concerning Bruce. I said as much on this thread last week and got hammered by everyone, including the who writes this blog. I cringe when I hear people say he is just a kid. This is his 5th year in the Majors and he’s not getting better he’s getting worse. Don’t get me started on numbers, numbers are extremely misleading, extremely. If your only going to judge a player on numbers then why have scouts, just hire an Accountant.

Most teams have reduce their number of scouts because of the increased reliability of saber metrics.

I think either a scout or an accountant would see the inaccuracies in this statement. First, this is Bruce’s fourth year in the big leagues. He was called up on May 27, 2008. I was at the game.

More importantly, please provide some support for your claim that he is getting worse. Here are his yearly numbers for a variety of statistics. I included RBI to try to convince you and the scouts.

      HR: 21, 22, 25, 27
      RBI: 52, 58, 70, 84
      OPS+: 97, 101, 124, 127

Keep in mind this season has a month to go. Is it really the case you would argue Bruce is getting worse if he ends the season with 35 HR and 110 RBI? Don’t forget his well above average defense.

What a shame to waste an AB of your best RH hitter vs a LH pitcher only to have your 2 LH hitters strike out with the go ahead runner on base. Votto is excused due to a very poor call. I think I would have rather have had Alonso PH for Bruce in that situation as he has just been clueless vs LH pitching in those spots.

Frazier may stick @ SS with plays like that.

      I don’t think so.

Somehow we managed to score an important late-inning run without sacrificing an out.

    Nice start to the homestand.

I heard that the TV broadcasters were talking about Anderson’s high school football game tonight. I think it’s Thom’s alma mater. I was at that game (which is why I was so late getting here). My alma mater, Princeton high school, beat Anderson.

  31. Y-City Jim

Willis still winless. I predict that he’ll get a win the first time Dusty allows Hanigan to catch him.

  32. Steve Mancuso

I’d sure love to see Todd Frazier make the team next year. Plays everywhere capably. Hits well.

He appears to be a solid player that the Reds. Far more so than Juan Francisco.

Reds Win! Alright, 1 more game closer to .500. Also, another game closer to putting the WLBs behind us.

@Y-City Jim: Thanks, I really did laugh out loud. Saber metrics are for Fantasy League Players. If anyone is interested Cards beat Pirates 5-4 tonight.

Virtually all MLB teams use sabermetrics today though to varying extents on the field of play.

    • Steve Mancuso

Saber metrics are for Fantasy League Players.

      Tell that to Theo Epstein.

(Your statement proves you don’t know anything about either sabermetrics or fantasy baseball.)

MIGGY! Todd Frazier is officially my 2011 CINCINNATI REDS HERO. Also: D-Train is captivating to watch. It’s official…I CANNOT do anything else when he pitches and when he’s at bat, but watch.

He probably should have been called up last year.
