Minor League Players of the Day: Dragons starter, Josh Smith, won his 11th game of the season, lowering his ERA to 3.09, going 6 very strong innings, allowing 1 run (on a homer) on 2 hits, walking 1, and striking out 8.
AAA
Denis Phipps went 2 for 4 with his 5th homer since being elevated to AAA. In 24 games, his numbers are .361/.398/.621. His OPS at AA was .883. Juan Francisco was also 2-4 and hit his 13th homer. Danny Dorn came in to play 1B late and his hit 15th homer.
Edison Volquez started and got the win (3-1), throwing 6.1 innings, allowing 10 hits, walking 1 and striking out 6, while giving up 4 runs, 3 earned. He also had an error. Jerry Gil got the save with 1.2 innings of one hit scoreless relief.
AA
Henry Rodriguez went 2-4 with a double, Miguel Rojas went 2-4, and Eric Campbell went 1-3 with a homer and a walk.
Travis Webb threw 2 inning of one hit, shutout ball out of the pen, striking out 2. Donnie Joseph got the loss, giving up the winning run, on 2 hits and 3 walks in an inning and a third.
High A
Alex Buchholz and Brodie Greene were both 2-5.
J.C. Sulbaran was rocked, throwing 1.2, giving up 7 runs, 6 earned on 7 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 1. Clayton Shunick was just as bad, throwing 4 innings, giving up 3 runs on 1 hit and 6 walks, while striking out 6.
Andrew Bowman threw 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing 1 hit, walking 1 and striking out 3.
Low A
Big night at the plate for the Dragons as they collect 16 hits. Ronald Torreyes went 3-5 with a double, Billy Hamilton went 2-4, with a walk and stole his 81st base (also was picked), David Vidal went 2-4 with a double, Juan Duran went 2-3 (and was PH for late in the game, no idea why), Redleg Nation Spotlight Player Tucker Barnhart went 2-4 with a double.
Excellent game by starter Josh Smith (his 2nd in last 3 starts), throwing 6 innings of two hit, one run baseball. He walked one and struck out 8.
The bullpen was also outstanding with 3 perfect innings from Daniel Wolford (2 K’s), Blaine Howell (2 K’s), and Drew Hayes.
Rookie Ball
Not a big offensive night for the Mustangs, as no one had more than one hit, their offense was aided by 3 errors by the Chukars, accounting for 3 unearned runs.
Ismael Guillon picked up his first win of the year, going 5 innings, allowing 2 runs (2 homers) on 9 hits and striking out 5.
The AZL Reds had an off day.
