Let’s recap today’s titanic struggle….

Cincinnati 3
Chicago (NL) 4

W: R. Dempster (9-8)
L: M. Leake (9-7)
S: C. Marmol (24)

–Yonder Alonso was 2-4 with a double and a run scored. BP had two hits, and Ramon Hernandez homered.

–Mike Leake wasn’t great, but he settled down after surrendering three runs in the first two innings. In all, those were the only three runs he allowed in his six innings of work, on six hits.

–Jose Arredondo continued his recent pattern of poor bullpen work, loading the bases in the seventh without recording an out. Bill Bray and (especially) Logan Ondrusek came on to put out the fire, but the one run that did score was the margin of victory for the Cubbies.

–Drew Stubbs: 0-5 with three strikeouts from the leadoff spot.

–Another very uninspired effort by the good guys.

–The Reds have now lost 3 of 4 on this road trip against the two bottom-dwellers in the National League Central division. Chew on that, Reds fans. Just when the Reds needed to turn on the afterburners to get back into this race, they have laid an egg (mixed metaphor alert).

–Each of the Reds’ last four losses have been by one run.

–Todd Frazier got some action in left field late in the game, and he gunned down a runner at the plate.

–Aroldis Chapman threw a pitch through the screen behind home plate. I’ve never seen that before.

–The good guys are now eight games out of first place.

–When is the season over?
