The Reds really couldn’t have picked a better way to open August. The Astros were really bad before trading away a couple of their best players. Now, their 25-man roster just looks sad.

I know, that doesn’t mean the Reds are going to win these games, but I’ll be awfully disappointed if they can’t play well against this AAA team.*

Here’s your game preview. Go Redlegs.

*Yes, I’m jinxing the team. I acknowledge that.

Wow. Aside from a few pitchers, that really is a minor league team. I might take the Bats against them. Especially if you sent the recent call ups back down.

  2. Fisch

Does anyone believe the Reds would trade Votto for Jose Bautista? The Reds would have had a very tough sell explaining that trade. Walt might have been run out of Cincy on a rail.

  3. Jason1972

I love Votto, but ii would have made a lot of sense on paper: Reds get their big OF bat (signed for 5 years) and slot Alonso in at 1b for 70-80% of Votto’s production.

  4. Ethan D

I’d honestly make that trade. Put Bautista in at 3rd and have a Heisey/Sappelt, Stubbs, Bruce OF for the next few seasons and we’re made in the shade.

Off tonight’s game topic…I just want to point out what hard work and focus will do. Johnny Cueto deserves all the success he’s having because 2 seasons ago he dedicated himself to being the best pitcher he could be and he is reaping all the benefits of that hard-work and so are the REDS everytime he takes the mound. Way to GO!!!

Agreed. His 6.2 Hits/9 is just plain sick

  6. wildwestLV

If there is any truth to this, we’ll know tonight by watching Joey at the plate. If he doesn’t get tossed arguing calls, it was all bs. 😆 j/k. I don’t buy this at all, esp. considering Walt didn’t green light a trade for Ramon, which seemed the most likely deal, or go after Shields (which needed to happen, or needs to happen before next season). We don’t need to think about this nonesense, we just need to concentrate and win, like, 20 games in a row.

  7. Fisch

I love that Johnny has taken his job/potential seriously. There is a pitcher in AAA – Volquez – who could use a tutoring lesson from Cueto. Johnny has made himself into a bonafied #1 pitcher, and I love it.

  8. Dave Lowenthal

Cliff: you had an excellent post stating why Hernandez would not return Wheeler. Beltran returned Wheeler, a fair deal—but only because (and you missed this, and so did I until my Giants fan friends pointed it out to me) Beltran *cannot be offered arbitration and therefore no draft picks will come as a result of losing him via free agency. Thank Scott Boras there, he inserted that language into his contract.

Wheeler is a good prospect, but in A ball. Great trade by the Giants. Sabean had a great quote on the trade, saying he would not help “for a while”, and they’d just have to find another Wheeler. (Then he made an bad trade for Cabrera, at least in my opinion, and gave idiotic justifications for it).

  9. Fisch

I am happy to see that Yonder gets to play left field. I hope he does well. For the Reds and his sake, I hope he does a good job. He does not need to be an all star defensively, just serviceable. I can not be worse than Gomes or Dunn, can he?

  10. Furniture City Red

Really have to expect a sweep of the ‘Stros right?…2 out of 3 would be a disappointment. Really, if you can’t sweep this ‘Stros team you don’t deserve to win the division…
…Then take 2 outta 3 from the Stupid Cups…and there is the start of the streak (winning 8 of 9) we’ve all been waiting for…
…Overly optimistic wishful thinking or not?

I can’t say winning 2 out of 3 would be a disappointment at all. I know you want to take advantage of an Astros team that has just unloaded most of their good players, but anytime you can win a series you’ve done your job.

I think the only way I’d be slightly disappointed with a 2 out of 3 is if the Reds won the first two but couldn’t get the third. But once again, gotta win the series before you can get the sweep!

What a play by atta-boy Paul Janish!

Family and I are headed to Chicago for Saturday’s game. Any words of wisdom for a first time Wrigley attendee?

  12. Furniture City Red

I would have pulled the trigger on the Votto/Bautista deal. It seems to make sense however you look at it.

  13. Crutch23

@Fisch: Im from Illinois…been to Wrigley several times. As long as youre sitting in the bleachers, its a fun experience. Otherwise its pretty much a s–thole ballpark that smells like urine and stale beer.

If you knew anything about Wrigley you would know that the Bleachers are the worse place to sit, unless you like being around fat shirtless Mullet wearing morons.

    • Sergeant2

It absolutely will be a disappointment if the Red Legs don’t sweep the Astro’s. The Reds are in no position to pass up sweeping this cupcake of a team. Winning 2 out of 3 from any other team would be awesome, but right now the Astro’s are being offered up on a Silver Platter to be swept. The Reds cannot afford to pass up this opportunity. It is not idiotic to think it would be a Golden opportunity missed.

  14. RedLegHerrm

This Astros lineup tonight may be one of the worst lineups you will ever see fielded by a ML ballclub.

  15. Furniture City Red

Fay’s source on the hypothetical Votto trade is really suspect…”A reader tipped…that he has a friend in baseball who told him…” 🙄

  16. reds_fan

I can’t believe some of you would want to make the Votto/Bautista swap. I absolutely LOVE Bautista’s bat, but that doesn’t improve the team hardly at all! Alonso is a great young bat, sure, but his defense is even at 1B is suspect according to reports and he’s so young! He’ll have all those periods of time where he’ll struggle just like any other young bat. Look at Bruce. If you take the best bat out of our lineup and then put another bat just as good back in, how does that help? That trade wouldn’t do anything but confuse the Cincinnati fan base and make a lot of people angry.

This team is about winning in the next 3-5 years. Taking Votto out of that doesn’t do much. Why not put together a package of Alonso, Volquez, Bailey/Leake, Grandal, and a lower prospect for Bautista? That would be the much smarter move for the Reds and something that Toronto would be crazy not to seriously consider.

Trading Votto and the Reds best young pitching prospect for Bautista would not only be ineffective, but it would be stupid.

  17. reds_fan

Dang, really wanted to take advantage of that leadoff single by Stubbs. Votto and Phillips didn’t look to good early in those counts vs Norris.

Let’s hope we get the 2010 version of Arroyo tonight. Let’s go Reds!!

  18. Y-City Jim

@Fisch: If that trade happened, it might eclipse the Frank Robinson trade in terms of sheer lunacy. I’m also very skeptical of Bautista’s huge performance jump at age 29. It’s not as suspicious as Brady Anderson but I’m just not sold.

  19. Y-City Jim

On another note, if that rumored trade was true what does that say about Scott Rolen’s future? Is he planning to retire?

    • al

On another note, if that rumored trade was true what does that say about Scott Rolen’s future? Is he planning to retire?

no, i think bautista would go to left. at least next year.

  20. Y-City Jim

Scratch that previous comment. I didn’t realize that Bautista had made a shift primarily to the OF.

  21. Y-City Jim

I know his hitting isn’t much but I can live with it when he makes plays like that.

  22. RedLegHerrm

@reds_fan: Have you seen this Astros team we’re playing? We forfeited the luxury of not having to sweep this team when we were swept by the Mets. Anything less than a sweep is an absolute disappointment.

@reds_fan: Have you seen this Astros team we’re playing? We forfeited the luxury of not having to sweep this team when we were swept by the Mets.Anything less than a sweep is an absolute disappointment.

Yes, I’ve seen the team. On paper the Reds are much better, but that’s why you play the games my friend. Should the Reds sweep if they play up to their potential? Sure. But to say winning two out of three against anybody is an absolute disappointment is idiotic. Especially considering we are facing the Astros best two starting pitchers in Norris and Wandy.

  23. Steve Simon

    @Y-City Jim:

I agree 100 percent with you. That was an outstanding play by Janish.

  24. Steve Mancuso

Plays like that are an example why I’d pay good money (and did) to go watch Paul Janish play in the field.

  25. RedLegHerrm

@Y-City Jim: Haha I don’t know. There is one proven ML bat in this entire lineup and that’s a washed-up Carlos Lee. If there’s a worse lineup that’s been run out there, I’d like to see it.

  26. Y-City Jim

@Furniture City Red: Probably that clown that used to post here that was always claiming he was dining with MLB front office types.

  27. al

this is definitely the reds worst matchup of the series. norris is a tough righty, which we don’t do well against, and arroyo is certainly our worst starter right now.

good to see that kind of stroke from bruce, and glad to have alonso in the lineup.

  28. Steve Simon

Tampa Bay is silly in my opinion to not take Alonso, Grandal, Francisco and a lower prospect for Shields. I would have done that trade in a second. Of course, I don’t know if those three plus another were even offered, but I think that should have gotten the trade done.

  29. al

terrible strike 2 call on hanny, leads to that k.

i’m really impressed with alonso’s stroke. he has great plate coverage.

  30. RedLegHerrm

@reds_fan: Agree to disagree. I don’t think I’m alone in that sentiment.

  31. Steve Mancuso

Bruce and Alonso both hit balls that would have easily been out of GABP.

Arroyo has been hit hardest by LH hitters this year. The Astros have two switch hitters and all the rest RH hitters.

  32. reds_fan

Man, Arroyo can’t locate tonight. Don’t walk people Bronson, come on now. Focus.

  33. RedLegHerrm

Walking 2 people in this lineup already is criminal.

  34. reds_fan

Where are all my positive Redleg Nation commenters?

  35. reds_fan

Man, something has to be wrong with Arroyo. He was SO good last year. I think a DL stint needs to happen from Bronson. I think it’s time for Travis Wood to come back up and take Arroyo’s spot for awhile. Anyone agree?

  36. Crutch23

Arroyo is fooling nobody tonight….hope to God this is his last start for awhile.

  37. George Culver

Terrible. Arroyo just does not have anything left in the tank!

  38. Myles

Too bad Arroyo looks like a AA pitcher against a AAA team.
Would someone please stick a fork in him.

  39. renbutler

Okay, so Paredes crushed that ball (and now Quintero). The walks sucked too.

But he’s been very unlucky with the crap that’s also falling in.

Stubbs has to make a play there.

  40. reds_fan

Stubbs has to catch that ball. If it hits your glove, you gotta squeeze it.

    • al

Stubbs has to catch that ball. If it hits your glove, you gotta squeeze it.

yeah, that was stubbs fault. ridiculous.

      • reds_fan

        @al:

        yeah, that was stubbs fault.ridiculous.

He got to the ball. Stubbs needs to make a play on it. If you get to the ball, you gotta make a play on it. I’m not saying it’s anybody’s fault.

      • renbutler

        yeah, that was stubbs fault.ridiculous.

Wha? That’s not what he said.

Even if it was a bad pitch that got crushed, Stubbs still needs to catch that ball.

      • al

Wha? That’s not what he said.Even if it was a bad pitch that got crushed, Stubbs still needs to catch that ball.

it was a sure double if anyone but him was playing CF. he ran a mile for it, dove, and didn’t make a spectacular play.

i think the idea that anything that hits your glove has to be caught is ridiculous.

      • renbutler

it was a sure double if anyone but him was playing CF.he ran a mile for it, dove, and didn’t make a spectacular play.

He didn’t dive. He was still on his feet when the ball hit his glove, and then he fell to the ground. It wasn’t an easy play, but the speed is irrelevant on that play if you don’t catch the ball.

If he laid out for a ball and just missed it, that’s another thing completely.

      • al

fine, you believe what you want. but to me, it would have been a sensational play if he made it, and to gripe about him not making it, while arroyo was pitching BP, seems weird.

      • renbutler

…and to gripe about him not making it, while arroyo was pitching BP, seems weird.

No, that statement is weird. 😕

  41. Myles

Can they DFA him? Or would the financial hit be too much? He claims he’s healthy, and if so, then he now officially stinks.

    • reds_fan

      @Myles:

Can they DFA him? Or would the financial hit be too much? He claims he’s healthy, and if so, then he now officially stinks.

Arroyo has never missed a start in his career, he’s used to pitching through injuries. Trust me, he’s not right. He’s hurt. He needs to go on the DL… Wood needs to be brought up. Poor Bronson looks really tired.

  42. George Culver

How can this continue? This is a AA + AAA team and Arroyo can’t get thru this lineup?

  43. hoosierdad

Wow. Better get Sam ready. If I’m right, he’s face 2 rookies getting their first MLB AB and he walks one and the other hits a triple off him.

  44. ArkansasRedsFan

Good hustle on a good play by Bronson there. Let’s get those runs back now.

  45. Myles

As someone pointed out yesterday it’s tough to make a 32-22 finish when Arroyo would be expected to go about 2-8 during that stretch.

  46. al

Man, Arroyo is a bad pitcher. If he weren’t making a ton of money right now, he’d be a bad pitcher for the Bats.

  47. Wil Payne

More balls than a barn full of bulls.
I hope Sam LeCure is ready to come in and pitch, hmm, I dunno, 5 innings…

  48. wildwestLV

Embarrassing. Bronson looks like he is facing the New York Yankees out there tonight. Pathetic.

  49. reds_fan

Those runs the offense couldn’t get across in the 1st and 2nd innings would be nice to have right now.

  50. vared

I’m not sure anything is wrong with him, but regardless I bet he goes on the DL tomorrow (wink, wink).

  51. renbutler

At least nobody has said something dumb like “game over” yet (that I’ve seen).

    We’re making progress here…

  52. ArkansasRedsFan

So is it just me or has Drew found his bat lately?

  53. RedLegHerrm

Stubbs is definitely feeling it at the plate.

  54. Steve Mancuso

Baker is never going to play Alonso if he can’t catch the routine outs in LF like the one last inning.

  55. wildwestLV

@renbutler: Not over, but the Reds are going to have get on the horse and put on about 15+ runs to win this (if Dusty leaves Bronson in +4 innings).

    • renbutler

Not over, but the Reds are going to have get on the horse and put on about 15+ runs to win this (if Dusty leaves Bronson in +4 innings).

I’m starting to think this might not be accurate. 😳 8)

  56. reds_fan

Thank you @renbutler. Looks like it’s up to me and you to be the voices of reason tonight.

  57. RedLegHerrm

    Yet another unproductive out. Sheesh

  58. reds_fan

That a boy Votto! C’mon Phillips, let’s continue the offense and tie this thing up!

  59. ArkansasRedsFan

Alright, Votto, I’m starting to get surprised if you don’t get a hit and an RBI when you come up to bat. Even if there is nobody on base.

  60. renbutler

@wildwestLV: That’s an exaggeration. The Reds have given up 4, 6, and 8 runs in Arroyo’s last three starts, and he’s gone six or more innings in all three.

Of course, I shouldn’t have to point this out, but knowing how some people have trouble interpreting what’s said around here, I’ll add that I think Arroyo has not been a good pitcher lately. But there’s no need to exaggerate his mediocrity.

  61. reds_fan

Nice job BP! Just slap the ball the other way, Brandon! That’s when you’re at your best. C’mon Bruce! C’mon Alonso! Let’s keep this run going!

  62. renbutler

@Sergeant2: Sweeps on the road are never easy, no matter the competition. I’m looking at 4-2 minimum on this road trip — winning at least two games in each series.

    • reds_fan

      @renbutler:

@Sergeant2: Sweeps on the road are never easy, no matter the competition. I’m looking at 4-2 minimum on this road trip — winning at least two games in each series.

I agree completely. A 4 out of 6 road trip would be a great success for this Reds team. I’d take that every day of the week.

C’mon Bruce… you HAVE to know a breaking ball down is coming there. DON’T swing.

    • Sergeant2

@Sergeant2: Sweeps on the road are never easy, no matter the competition. I’m looking at 4-2 minimum on this road trip — winning at least two games in each series.

I like your attitude, Never give up, Never surrender.

  63. reds_fan

Wow… Bruce just got lucky on that ball 3 call.

  64. wildwestLV

@renbutler: I would think his numbers will go down dramatically once he sees this lineup a second time, through.

  65. hoosierdad

@renbutler: I thought Stubbs played it alright. Have you looked at the replays?

  66. renbutler

@hoosierdad: Several times. That’s the kind of play you have to make to help your pitcher, especially when he’s struggling. Again, it wasn’t easy, but it wouldn’t have been spectacular either. With his speed, he should get that ball.

  67. Steve Simon

What was that about with Bruce and the Astros catcher?

  68. ArkansasRedsFan

Good inning there by Bronson. Way to bounce back.

  69. reds_fan

VERY good bounce back inning by Arroyo. C’mon Reds offense! Let’s keep it going!

  70. hoosierdad

@renbutler: Gotta disagree. If he made that catch it would’ve been #1 on Sportscenter. I think the only way he catches that is to do an over the head catch and then crash into the wall (ala Ryan Freel).

    • AnnapolisHoosier

@renbutler: Gotta disagree. If he made that catch it would’ve been #1 on Sportscenter.I think the only way he catches that is to do an over the head catch and then crash into the wall (ala Ryan Freel).

Ren drives me nuts sometimes with his over protection of Bronson, but he’s right on this one. Stubbs should have made that play. #1 on Sportscenter? No way.

      • renbutler

Ren drives me nuts sometimes with his over protection of Bronson…

Really? I haven’t really said much about Arroyo all season. I don’t think the negativity about him has been quite as overboard as for some other players.

  71. renbutler

@hoosierdad: He was just starting to slide when the ball hit his glove, and his momentum carried him barely to the warning track. He needed just another inch or a better grab, but neither would have gotten him anywhere near the wall or an angle where the ball went over his head.

  72. reds_fan

Hey @Sergeant2, any chance you can keep us updated on the Cards-Brewers game? I know it doesn’t really matter because the Reds simply need tow in their games and not worry about the other teams, but I am curious.

    • Sergeant2

Hey @Sergeant2, any chance you can keep us updated on the Cards-Brewers game? I know it doesn’t really matter because the Reds simply need tow in their games and not worry about the other teams, but I am curious.

      Cardinals 2 Brewers 0 Bot. 4th

  73. hoosierdad

@renbutler: Are we talking about the same play? I was talking about the triple.

  74. ArkansasRedsFan

2-0 WLB in the top of the 4th

  75. reds_fan

PAUL JANISH!! Was that a HR? Can we get an instant replay?

    • reds_fan

      @reds_fan:

PAUL JANISH!! Was that a HR? Can we get an instant replay?

Ah, dang. So close to being a HR there by Janish. Can Arroyo help his own cause?

  76. renbutler

@reds_fan: Who would you rather see win? The team in first, or the intolerable team?

Personally, I can’t root for the WLBs. I actually like the Brewers.

    • reds_fan

@reds_fan: Who would you rather see win? The team in first, or the intolerable team?

Well it does make sense to root for the WLB’s because the BrewCrew is in 1st right now, but I don’t care, really. Like I said, I’m just worrying about the Reds because all they need to do is win. I was just curious because of the pitching matchup between those two tonight.

  77. ArkansasRedsFan

Janish must have skipped a rep of bench press in his last workout.

  78. renbutler

@reds_fan: No HR, but dang, we’re just so unlucky! How many hits have bounced off the top of the wall for us, while our opponents dribble HRs into the first row?

3-2 Astros. Top of the 4th.

  82. reds_fan

Stubbs needs to find a way for a big hit right here.

  83. Kidner14

why not try a suicide squeeze in that AB

  84. ArkansasRedsFan

    Man, missed a chance there.

  85. reds_fan

The runners the Reds have stranded through 4 innings (5 already, all at 2nd or 3rd) is far more frustrating than Arroyo’s rough 2nd inning.

  86. RedLegHerrm

Nobody worse to have up in that situation. Doesn’t matter how hot he’s swinging the bat.

  87. Steve Simon

So nobody has a clue why Bruce and the Astros catcher was mouthing back and forth with each other an inning ago?

    • reds_fan

      @Steve Simon:

So nobody has a clue why Bruce and the Astros catcher was mouthing back and forth with each other an inning ago?

Nope. TV announcers never concluded anything. They just said it was odd because Bruce is also so calm.

      • vegastypo

        @Steve Simon:

Nope. TV announcers never concluded anything. They just said it was odd because Bruce is also so calm.

Brantley didn’t offer any explanation about it on radio, either

  88. Crutch23

I would hate to guess at what our overall record would be, had we just scored half of the men we have on 3rd with less than 2 outs.

  89. RedLegHerrm

He never fails to get himself in the hole in those situations too. It’s like he’s guaranteed to get down 0-2. Frustrating

  90. wildwestLV

@reds_fan: It’s all good, Ren already said we don’t have to score 15+ runs to win this. 😆

  91. reds_fan

Miguel Cairo doing his best Scott Rolen impression there. Beautiful. Great pitch by Arroyo too.

  92. Steve Simon

    @reds_fan:

I’ve got the TV feed on, too. They really didn’t have a clue as to what happened. I hoped someone had the radio feed and Marty might have picked up on something, but thanks.

    • reds_fan

Back to back singles by Cairo and Votto… c’mon Redlegs!! Keep it going!

  93. reds_fan

Another great inning by Arroyo. C’mon Reds offense!!

  94. ArkansasRedsFan

    Another good one by Bronson.

  95. wildwestLV

@vegastypo: I think it’s just Texas. Guy probably knew a dude who dated Bruce’s sister or something.

  96. Steve Simon

    @vegastypo:

Thank you, too. Apparently, Bruce just had a beef with the guy or he had one with Bruce. If I were the Houston catcher, I would have a beef with the ball called that should have been strike three to Bruce.

  97. Sergeant2

I can’t believe no one had any witty things to say about what might have been said between Bruce and the catcher.

  98. Kidner14

c’mon Bruce single gives us the lead!

  99. reds_fan

Bruce up with the bases loaded and NNNOOOBODY out! C’mon Bruce… come through here buddy!

  100. RedLegHerrm

Love seeing BP bear down with 2 strikes on him twice in a row now.

  101. al

I like this matchup the way Bruce has been swinging lately.

  102. wildwestLV

Got to get one in here. If not two.

  103. ArkansasRedsFan

Well, at least we tied it I guess.

  104. reds_fan

Well… at least they got the run in. Better than a strikeout. Let’s see if Alonso can get the run in with 2 outs.

  105. Kidner14

only thing bruce know’s how to do with the bases loaded is hit into a DP

  106. reds_fan

Why doesn’t Bruce get the RBI there?

  107. L.A.Red

I feel like this team needs to work on hitting deep fly balls to score runners from third….every time we screw this situation up

  108. renbutler

Brewers score, down 2-1 to the WLBs.

  109. reds_fan

Nice AB by Alonso. C’mon Hanigan!

  110. CP

Man…Yonder really does have a good approach.

  111. Sergeant2

Brewers have bases loaded no outs Bot 5th Cards 2 to 1

  112. reds_fan

@hoosierdad: @renbutler: But do you know why that is the rule? If he doesn’t put it in play there’s no run scored. I don’t get that.

  113. renbutler

Brewers tie it up 2-2, still batting in the 5th. Bad inning for Carpenter. 😆

  114. reds_fan

Man, Hannigan had a pitch to CRUSH there and fouled it off. Dangit.

  115. renbutler

@reds_fan: Because he doesn’t reach safely, and it’s not a sacrifice (you clearly don’t want to intentionally give up two outs for a single run).

  116. CP

Alonso plus Hanigan equals a very long inning.

  117. George Culver

Wasted bases loaded, no out. Pitcher tiring. Only 1 run on FC. Hopefully not reverting? Whew?

    • reds_fan

      @renbutler:

      5-2 BrewCrew!

Let’s not root for the Brewers, ha. Plus, like I said, we should prolly want the Cards to win with Milwaukee in first. But like I said, Reds just need to put there heads down and win themselves. No need to watch other team’s games.

  118. reds_fan

Dang, wasted opportunity there. 7 left on base… only one of those runners were left on first.

  119. hoosierdad

@reds_fan: Per MLB rulebook. 10.04 Runs Batted In
A run batted in is a statistic credited to a batter whose action at bat causes one or more runs to score, as set forth in this Rule 10.04.
    (a) The official scorer shall credit the batter with a run batted in for every run that scores
    (1) unaided by an error and as part of a play begun by the batter’s safe hit (including the batterÂ’s home run), sacrifice bunt, sacrifice fly, infield out or fielder’s choice, unless Rule 10.04(b) applies;
    (2) by reason of the batter becoming a runner with the bases full (because of a base on balls, an award of first base for being touched by a pitched ball or for interference or obstruction); or
    (3) when, before two are out, an error is made on a play on which a runner from third base ordinarily would score.
    (b) The official scorer shall not credit a run batted in
    (1) when the batter grounds into a force double play or a reverse-force double play; or
    (2) when a fielder is charged with an error because the fielder muffs a throw at first base that would have completed a force double play.

Thanks for the official rulebook there! After seeing all of it explained it makes sense not to have that specific situation result in an RBI. Appreciate it.

  120. renbutler

@wildwestLV: Five singles, then a Nyjer Morgan bases-clearing double, all with no outs.

  121. reds_fan

FANTASTIC job by Arroyo in the 5th there. Keep it up Redlegs! Let’s get the offense going!

  122. wildwestLV

@renbutler: I hate that guy (when he plays against us ; ) but he sure does hustle when he plays.

    • reds_fan

      @wildwestLV:

@renbutler: I hate that guy (when he plays against us ; ) but he sure does hustle when he plays.

I agree. Morgan is such a punk.

  123. ArkansasRedsFan

Man, Bronson has really come through since that bad second inning.

  124. renbutler

@reds_fan: Can’t root for the WLBs, especially with Carpenter pitching. I’m still scoreboard watching regardless. There’s no reason why fans can’t do that.

  125. reds_fan

Reds hitters have done a good job of making Norris work. I’m pretty sure he’s already over 100 pitches. Let’s hope that trend continues for the rest of the season! Always a good sign. C’mon Janish!

  126. Kidner14

its good to see Janish hitting the ball well

    • reds_fan

      @Kidner14:

its good to see Janish hitting the ball well

Very good to see. Let’s hope that lead-off double leads to a big inning here.

  127. Sergeant2

Cards are falling apart defensively. Its now 5-2 Brewers still Bot. 5th. Carpenters pitching, maybe the balls weren’t rubbed up properly. The sweat is pouring off of Carpenters hat like a water fall, even the announcers talked about it. I never seen anything like it. Top of 6th Cards 2 Mil. 5

    • reds_fan

Lol, doesn’t Carpenter only complain against the Reds though?

  128. ArkansasRedsFan

Did y’all see the stache on the athletic trainer?

  129. Jeff

I just don’t get Janish. I am very surprised by his offense since being recalled from AAA. Very nice to see as Cozart rehabs.

  130. reds_fan

HAHAHA! Does anybody see that epic moustache of the Astros trainer? BEAST!

  131. wildwestLV

@Sergeant2: Carpenter should look into products like Summer’s Eve. I understand that they could make someone like him feel clean and refreshed.

  132. reds_fan

C’mon Drew Stubbs! Let’s hit a deep fly ball here buddy.

  133. Kidner14

holy cow stubbs all you gotta do is put it in play jeez c’mon

  134. Crutch23

This runner on 3rd with less than 2 outs stuff is getting downright annoying!!!!

  135. reds_fan

Wow… Cairo almost got hit in the head. How about a base hit now, Miggy?

  136. Sergeant2

I gather the score is tied 3-3. Sounds like Bronson has pulled it together, Bronson is a battler that’s for sure. Still though, I hope Dusty doesn’t let him go past 6

    • reds_fan

      @Sergeant2:

I gather the score is tied 3-3. Sounds like Bronson has pulled it together, Bronson is a battler that’s for sure. Still though, I hope Dusty doesn’t let him go past 6

Yep, score is tied at 3 going into the bottom of the 6th.

  137. reds_fan

8 men left on base. 7 of them were on 2nd or 3rd.

  138. ArkansasRedsFan

    Goodness, another missed chance.

  139. Crutch23

This game would be awful to lose….Reds have had so many chances, and crapped all over themselves.

  140. Steve Simon

The creeper nailed it when he said, “can anybody on this team get a clutch hit not named Joey Votto?”.

  141. wildwestLV

Ugh. Stranded will be the end of us tonight if nothing else.

  142. L.A.Red

OMG…why can’t we hit deep fly balls…I swear we’ve missed out on at least 20 runs this year due to not being able to hit deep fly balls with one out. And for as many close games as we’ve lost this year…we’d have 10 more wins!!!

  143. George Culver

Short leash on Arroyo from here on even though 62 pitches

  144. al

i am way down on arroyo, but i have to give him credit for bouncing back this game. he looked like he was not long for this game in the first 2 innings and here he is in the 6th, more or less cruising with only 70 pitches.

  145. reds_fan

Arroyo with another great inning. Come on offense! Heart of the order coming up! Let’s get some runs, Reds!!!

  146. ArkansasRedsFan

Man, Bronson has just been nothing but solid since the 2nd.

    • Steve Simon

@Steve Simon: Renteria .304 with RISP.

Your man crush on Renteria is as bad as my man crush on Homer Bailey, Ren!

  147. Sergeant2

If Dusty lets Bronson go past 6 he should get a good talking to.

  148. reds_fan

No worries guys! The offense is gonna get it going in these last few innings so the Reds can get the W!

  149. Jeff

@L.A.Red: thats an understatement. the sac fly is more elusive than the holy grail. so close yet so far….across the street.

  150. ArkansasRedsFan

We can’t keep giving them life.

  151. George Culver

Calling offense where have you gone?

  152. reds_fan

Ha, Alonso made that routine fly ball out look like a spectacular play. He really is pretty slow.

  153. al

nice catch by yonder there. seems like he can provide at least dunnian defense in left. at this point, with how bad we need someone to hit righties, i’ll take it.

  154. renbutler

@Steve Simon: I winked. Cairo actually has a better RISP average than Renteria, but Renteria was a funnier answer. IMO, of course.

  155. renbutler

Pirates’ slump continues, losing at home to the lowly Cubs. They might end up not being a concern if the Reds manage to pull back in the race for the division.

  156. ArkansasRedsFan

Wow, great catch by DatDude, and another solid inning by Bronson.

  157. reds_fan

Great catch by Phillips. Gotta love his defense. Another great 1-2-3 by Arroyo. Just over 80 pitches through 7 innings = efficient. C’mon Reds offense! Let’s give Bronson some support!

  158. renbutler

    Arroyo: 7IP, 5H, 3ER, 2BB, 2K

    Good enough against the Astros?

  159. wildwestLV

@renbutler: I’d be shocked if the Bucs were anywhere close to being there in the end. Call me a pessimist, but I’ll bank on us finishing ahead of them, at least.

  160. Jeff

@renbutler: This years Pirates remind me of the Reds in the mid 2000’s in that they have talent in some areas and are lacking greatly in others. They can look great some games but don’t have the type of team to stick around in August and September. They’re getting better.

  161. reds_fan

Man, this Astros lefty reliever is nasty.

  162. Steve Simon

    @renbutler:

You did wink but I think you mistook me for either Cairo or Renteria. Actually, I like Cairo a lot. I just think he shouldn’t be played every singe day. Renteria I can live with if he is used as a limited sub, and in late game situations as a pinch hitter because he is fantastic in that role.

  163. reds_fan

Reds need to get a big rally going right here.

  164. Sergeant2

I’m glad Bronson has pitched 7 innings with a low pitch count, but you know its only a matter of time before the wheels fall off, and when they do Dusty won’t take him out until he gives up the lead.

  165. AnnapolisHoosier

Hanigan is just pathetic at the plate. I don’t get all the love for him. He’s barely slugging over .300

    • reds_fan

      @AnnapolisHoosier:

And your negativity and wildly exaggerated statements haven’t been missed at all during this game. Why now?

  166. ArkansasRedsFan

This game is almost turning into a must-win. It appears that if we get beat, we will fall 7.5 out of first.

    • reds_fan

      @AnnapolisHoosier:

Why is Arroyo still in the game?Didn’t we just get a complete game yesterday? This makes no sense.

Dude, he’s on a roll (knock on wood).

  167. Jeff

@Sergeant2: Agreed. 7 IP is long enough. I’d like to see a big arm like Chapman setting up right now. Lets hope leaving Arroyo in doesn’t bite us. 1 down, 2 to go.

  168. reds_fan

Cairo has made a handful of Rolen-esque plays tonight. Great to see from Miggy.

    • Jeff

Wow.. did the bat hit BP too?

no, fell about 10 ft short of him

      • reds_fan

        @Jeff:

no, fell about 10 ft short of him

I realize that now. It just looked like it hit him for a split second.

  169. reds_fan

That flyout was the first hard hit ball by the Astros in awhile. Scared me for a second, but no where near being gone. C’mon Arroyo one more big out!

  170. wildwestLV

This HOU crowd really cannot judge a hit ball, listening to them.

  171. George Culver

Is anyone warming up? Just in case

    • reds_fan

      @George Culver:

Is anyone warming up?Just in case

Masset is in the bullpen and ready to go it looks like. The only hit was a broken bat single.

  172. reds_fan

I wonder why Arroyo is so worried about that runner at 1st…

  173. ArkansasRedsFan

Gotta give it up for Arroyo tonight. Well done.

  174. reds_fan

BIG TIME!! Fantastic outing by Bronson Arroyo tonight. The 2010 version of Arroyo showed up tonight in a big way. This game is on the offense and bullpen now. Reds offense should be able to score 4 runs against the Astros and the bullpen should be able to hold the lead and save it.

  175. ArkansasRedsFan

@wildwestLV: Meh, it sounds like that at any baseball game you go to. You will always have fands that go nuts over any ball hit in the air.

  176. wildwestLV

Send him back out. Yes, I just said that.

  177. ArkansasRedsFan

Heck of a stinking bunt there by Heisey. You watching, Drew?

  178. Y-City Jim

@AnnapolisHoosier: .731 OPS for his career. I can live with that from a catcher who handles pitchers as well as he does.

  179. reds_fan

Stubbs should do the same thing and lay down a bunt. Chances are he’d beat it out.

  180. hoosierdad

@AnnapolisHoosier: I think Ren and I were talking about different things. I was talking about the triple. No way he gets to that one without killing himself and there was no slide on the catch.

  181. reds_fan

Wow… Stubbs almost did beat that out. C’mon Miguel Cairo!!!

  182. Kidner14

c’mon Cairo single gives us the lead!

  183. George Culver

Arroyo still makes me nervous. Good show tonight.

  184. ArkansasRedsFan

Dangit, Stubbs. You bunt that right or left and you’re safe.

    • reds_fan

      @ArkansasRedsFan:

Dangit, Stubbs. You bunt that right or left and you’re safe.

I know. But at least he’s bunting.

  185. reds_fan

Runner on 2nd with 2 outs… it comes down to Votto. Come on Joey!

  186. Y-City Jim

@AnnapolisHoosier: Defensively, Hanigan one of the best at his position. Renteria, one of the worst at his position.

  187. ArkansasRedsFan

Well, at least Votto is coming up with someone in RISP. But they will probably walk him.

  188. reds_fan

They’re walking him, nvm, lol. It comes down to BP! Come on Brandon, just have the slap it the other way approach. No need for anything but a good, clean base hit!

  189. reds_fan

BP .327 with RISP. Let’s bump that average up 1 or 2 notches!

  190. Jeff

This is exactly why I like BP behind Votto instead of Bruce. More clutch and reliable all season long.

  191. Dave Lowenthal

@reds_fan: Let me see if I understand this. Arroyo just pitched 8 innings and gave up 3 runs against a lineup of Carlos Lee and a bunch of AAA hitters, and that’s termed a “fantastic outing”?

I’d call it an above average outing…at best. I’d say the same for anyone else who gives up three earned runs to this “team” that the Houston Astros currently are. The lineup they are throwing out there couldn’t possibly average more than 4 runs a game for the year, so giving up 3 runs against them is no great shakes.

A fantastic outing is what we saw yesterday.

  192. Dave Lowenthal

@Y-City Jim: The only corner that Arroyo has turned is the one that directed him to the airport for the flight to Houston. I’m sorry, but Arroyo should NOT be pitching. The Reds brass simply has no guts to sit him down. If they did, *then* they could go on a run, though it’s likely too late because they’re behind so many teams. You never do know, though; it’s still possible. But with the anchor that is 2011 Arroyo, it’s going to be hard.

  193. Dave Lowenthal

There’s the great sac bunt, which gives up an out in exchange for taking the bat out of Votto’s hands. Man, I just hate that play, percentage wise.

  194. ArkansasRedsFan

Man oh man. Do we find another way to lose this one, or take it to extras?

  195. Dave Lowenthal

@George Culver: Yeah, I’ll do it for you. Note, while people will say I’m too negative they’ll forget that I was being ripped up and down for supporting guys like Homer Bailey just a few weeks ago and being too positive. But Arroyo just sucks, there’s no two ways about it, in 2011.

    • renbutler

@George Culver: But Arroyo just sucks, there’s no two ways about it, in 2011.

No, he’s had two different 2011s. He had six quality starts in his first eight games, before things started falling apart. Even then, in June he had a couple good ones.

  196. CP

@Dave Lowenthal: 0 for 3 tonight after sac bunting…GOTTA PLAY THE PERCENTAGES!!! Dusty was worried Drew would get doubled up.

    (one was Bronson but whateva)

  197. ArkansasRedsFan

Not a big fan of Masset here.

  198. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Nick needs to step up and get the job done

  199. George Culver

I can’t believe that this Reds team can’t hit this AAA pitching. I know that they’ve never seen them before but c’mon.

  200. reds_fan

Lol, could Carlos Lee have been running any slower? Great play by BP, though. That ball was smoked.

  201. ArkansasRedsFan

@George Culver: We have 11 hits. We’re having no problem hitting this pitching, its what we’re doing after we get the hits that is the problem.

  202. RedLeg75

Lee really jogging hard down the line there.

  203. reds_fan

Come on Masset! Throw strikes. I’m honestly SHOCKED there are some of you out there that want this guy to be the Reds closer moving forward. He’s way too shaky for me.

  204. RedLegHerrm

JD Martinez with a 3-0 green light? Is that a joke?

  205. Matt WI

For those in on the conversation on “nasty factor” the other day: Masset got 100 score on the ball one to Lee! The monkey pulling the levers was impressed.

  206. reds_fan

Is it just me or does Masset go 2-0 on every hitter?

  207. ArkansasRedsFan

Come on, Masset. Don’t crap yourself here.

  208. CharlotteNCRedsFan

IMO, Nick is too shaky in these situation. Decent 7th inning guy though.

  209. reds_fan

YES!!! Big time K by Masset there to prevent a serious rally from starting.

  210. ArkansasRedsFan

Atta boy, way to make him chase you there.

  211. Kidner14

he didnt throw 1 strike to him haha he helped us a whole lot there

  212. CharlotteNCRedsFan

    Got it done there!

    Nice job Masset

  213. reds_fan

You’d think somebody in this Reds lineup would be able to go deep here in the 10th and Coco could come and close it out.

  214. renbutler

Freddy swinging for the fences there.

  217. Sergeant2

Arroyo ended up pitching a good game tonight, and just think if it was up to us fans we would have pulled him after the 2nd and put in Lecure. @renbutler: And the Cards got hosed on an out call that should have been safe for a Brewer double play in a possible big inning.

Yeah, and last night LaRussa said the reason the Cards lost to the Cubs was because of the Umps strike zone. The Cards are the whiniest team in Baseball, bar none.

  221. ArkansasRedsFan

Come on, guys. Whoever is still pitching, please don’t blow up here. We can’t go 7.5 back.

  222. RedLegHerrm

Not a big fan of Ondrusek here either.

    • renbutler

Everybody who is watching the scoreboard is ridiculous. Reds have a looooong way to go (if you’re planning on playing in October).

If the Reds were scoreboard watching, it would be a problem.

There’s absolutely no reason whatsoever why the fans shouldn’t watch the scoreboard if they want to. I started scoreboard watching on March 31.

  225. ArkansasRedsFan

Need a DP ball. Hopefully they bunt one right back to him.

  226. George Culver

Right, this team needs to win no matter what the leaders do. Can’t afford anything else. Ondrusek scares me now too. Leadoff hits and hits with inherited runners in scoring position.

  227. reds_fan

Need a ground ball double play here Logan!

  228. reds_fan

Crap… well, at least the runner at 3rd is deathly slow.

  229. Kidner14

holy cow he sucks lately, why not bring in chapman or heck leave masset in there for another inning

  230. Crutch23

Good thing our bullpen is fresh….oh wait, guess it doesnt really matter. Im guessing the Astros wont pull a Reds maneuver and not score the guy on third with less than two outs.

  231. RedLegHerrm

This is pathetic. They are ripping the Reds on MLB Network right now for not pounding this AAA of a ballclub.

    • reds_fan

      @RedLegHerrm:

This is pathetic. They are ripping the Reds on MLB Network right now for not pounding this AAA of a ballclub.

I don’t know exactly what they’re saying, but it’s deserved after this team can’t score runners once they get in scoring position. That game should have been a 6-3 final without having to play extra innings.

  232. CP

Is there a reason why Chapman wouldn’t come in with bases loaded? Oh…because Dusty doesn’t plan ahead?

    • vared

Is there a reason why Chapman wouldn’t come in with bases loaded?Oh…because Dusty doesn’t plan ahead?

      Bingo.

  233. George Culver

Better bring in Chapman now to get strikeouts.

Well, not being pessimistic here, but looks like Reds are going to lose this game and the blame goes 100% on the offense. 8 runners left on base and 7 of them on 2nd and 3rd in the first 6 innings. You MUST score more than 3 runs in those situations. Too bad.

  235. CP

@renbutler: In 50 years, people will be citing Dusty Baker as “wisdom” also. 😆

  236. RedLegHerrm

Get ready to say hello to 7.5 back.

  237. reds_fan

Wow, Phillips would make that play and somehow the runner would be safe… welcome to the Reds in 2011. Close, but no cigar. 🙁

  238. Omaha4Reds

Wow if this whole team played with Phillips heart and character we would be unbeatable. UNREAL. First time posting too. AAA Oklahoma City 4 and Our poorly Reds 3

  239. Kidner14

screw this team! screw Hanigan for not catching a easy ball! and screw Ondrusek for blowing a game against a little league team! absolulty pathetic

  240. George Culver

And Ondrusek can’t retire a batter…..ummm ummm ummm.

  241. Crutch23

Can we send Hanigan down now?? That was pathetic after a great play by BP.

  242. ArkansasRedsFan

Holy crap. I can’t believe it. I knew it, we are the absolute kings at killing our own momentum by laying eggs after a huge win/series win.

  243. Crutch23

Chalk this game up to the Reds being non-clutch in runner on 3rd, less than 2 out situations. 3 times we choked in that situation tonight. It was the difference in the ball game.

  244. Omaha4Reds

Im sick of this talk of Hanigan. He is hitting .240 and his defensive skills are getting worse. Get him out of here.

      Thank You

  245. reds_fan

That’s a terrible loss guys, yes. But let’s not over-react. This Reds team needs to rebound tomorrow and Wednesday and get two big wins. Hanigan should not be sent down, and if you ask me, he had possession of the ball long enough to record the out, but guess not. If you’re going to question anything, it’s why Ondrusek was brought on in the 10th and not Chapman, but even that’s not the point.

Reds left 8 runners on base (7 of them were on 2nd or 3rd) in the first 6 innings. Gotta come through with more hits somewhere. This game is on the offense.

However, don’t overreact. Screw the standings right now. Screw 7.5 back. Reds need to man up, pull up their shorts and go out and win the next two games of this series and win the series. No excuses. Bailey and D-Train need to bring their A game so we can beat the Astros in the next two and move on to a nice day off.

    Sound good?

  246. Steve Mancuso

    Hold on!!!

Dusty Baker is protesting the game because the Astros broke the rules of baseball when they didn’t give up an out in the 10th inning with a sacrifice bunt. They cheated and had their batter swing away. Don’t they know it’s impossible to improve on the sacrifice bunt?

  247. Omaha4Reds

Notice the Astros not playing small ball in the 10th and they win. We played small ball all night and lost. I hope Jocketty thinks long and hard about Baker and how he leads this team into losing over and over.

  248. groujo

Is there any team in baseball that’s worse at bringing in the guy on 3rd?

You gotta figure that a man on 2 with no outs, or a man on 3 with one out is as good as scored. But not with my Reds.

Seriously, the sac fly is somehow impossible for these guys. The strikeouts are deadly. We should have won that game in regulation.

  249. RedLeg75

Sounds like hindsight, but I’ve been thinking this all year, and Dusty keeps doing the wrong thing.

Once the game hits the 10th inning, start with your best reliever and work your way down. Cordero in the 10th (he’s the closer and supposed to be your ace in the pen), Chapman, LeCure, Bray, then Ondrusek, Arredondo, if it goes 14 or 15. Or pitch LeCure 2 or 3 innings, then you don’t need Ondrusek or Arredondo until the 16th.

That way you’re optimizing the chance the other team doesn’t score. And hopefully you can get a run along the way.

  250. RedLegHerrm

11th walkoff win against us this year. You guessed it, most in the Majors.

  251. Myles

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2011 Cincinnati Reds!
They’ll be like this all week.

  252. Sergeant2

Tonight the Fat Lady has sang, this season is over. This team just does not have that burning desire to win. And when it comes to the pitching staff Dusty has not the slightest idea of how long a pitcher should go or which pitcher is best suited to certain situations. Why he brought in Ondrusek I have no idea, I hope its not because he hasn’t pitched for awhile and Dusty wanted to give him some work. Not when the game is on the line.

  253. Sergeant2

Where did everyone go? Is there another website everyone goes to to discuss the game. I wanna talk some more Reds Baseball.

  254. OhioJim

Hanigan deserves some slack for the drop on the game ender because what are the chances Ondrusek is somehow going to muddle through and get two more outs without the scoring.

Hanigan does not deserve any slack for his plate appearances. He’s one of the guys that failed to score a runner from third with less than two outs and also popped out (or was it a ground out?) later to end an inning with a runner in scoring position. Right now he goes through the motions well and runs a count out but is about worthless if they are smart enough to throw him a borderline pitch or strike when he has rin the count out.

If the right waiver deal comes up move him instead of Hernandez or maybe move them both and put the MLB catching in the hands of Meso and Corky since it looks like the Reds are playing for next year now.

How can you say Hanigan deserves some slack, because Ondrusek probably would have given up a run anyway? That’s hilarious and exactly what I was talking about earlier. He is the most overrated player by some on this board since Austin Kearns.

  255. OhioJim

@Sergeant2: I think guys just get irritated and go to bed. That’s where I’m headed because it is only six hours until I have to be up and on my way to work.

  256. RedLeg75

I’d imagine it is more difficult to catch a baseball backhanded with a catcher’s mitt than it would be with a regular glove. While trying to keep your foot on a plate.

Not impossible, I’d love to seen him snag it, but very difficult.

Pitch the better relievers first in extras, instead of the other way around, and it wouldn’t matter anyhow.
