John Sickels wrote a nice piece covering Dave Sappelt on his website today. I’ll jump right to John’s conclusion:
While most scouts see Sappelt as a future reserve outfielder due to his size, he’s proved doubters wrong at every level so far. He is certainly one of the more interesting potential promotions for later in the year.
Sappelt has just recently come back to the Bats from an oblique injury, limiting him to just 40 games this season. I suspect that he may be a September callup, but I don’t see him displacing the current three-headed monster in left field this year. I would expect that he is part of the left field solution in 2012.
As we noted back in Spring Training, Sappelt needs to work on his running game. He is fast but is caught stealing bases entirely too much. In just 5 attempts, so far this year, he has been caught stealing 3 times.
Sickels’ entire article is definitely worth a read.
