NOT-SO-RANDOM THOUGHTS
–The good guys really laid it to the Yankees in the second game of this day-night doubleheader. It doesn’t make up for the poor play we saw in the first two games of the series, but it sure helps.

–Johnny Cueto looks more and more like an ace every time he steps on the field. Cueto went 7 innings tonight, allowing one run on two hits. He also worked himself out of a huge bases-loaded jam in the seventh, in nifty fashion. Just so much fun to watch this guy pitch right now.

–Chris Heisey hit three homers in game two: 3-5, 5 RBI, 4 runs scored…but his best moment was the shaving cream pie that Bronson Arroyo delivered to his face after the game.

–Jonny Gomes was 2-4 with a homer in game two. Scott Rolen came off the bench to go 2-2 with a double. Ramon Hernandez, Miguel Cairo, and Paul Janish also had two hits.

–Game one: TOS (The Offense Stunk). Four hits, two by Brandon Phillips.

–Mike Leake went 6 innings, giving up five hits and four runs.

–Heisey is only the third Red ever to hit three homers from the leadoff spot. The other two? Pete Rose and Jay Bruce.

–Cueto has given up only four runs in four June starts. He has pitched at least 7 innings in five consecutive starts, allowing only five earned runs over those 36 innings. That’s a 1.25 ERA during those starts (on the season, he’s now 5-2 with a 1.63 ERA). Wow.

–Cincinnati outscored the Yankees 15-11 in the series, yet lost two of the three games. Baseball is a funny game.

–Day off tomorrow, then the Reds will begin a series against the Orioles at Camden Yards on Friday.
