DOTF Minor League Player of the Day: Bakersfield catcher Yasmani Grandal, who went 2-3 with two doubles, 3 RBI, and 2 walks.
AAA: Norfolk 6, Louisville 3
–2B Chris Valaika was 2-4 with a two-run homer, his second of the year. CF Brent Clevlen had two hits. Devin Mesoraco doubled.
–Aroldis Chapman pitched a perfect inning, throwing eight pitches, of which six were strikes. Mike Leake followed up with 2 poor innings, giving up three runs on four hits, raising his ERA to 9.82.
Jeremy Horst took the loss with a rare less-than-stellar performance. He went 4.2 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks. He did strike out six. For what it’s worth, Horst has a future on the major league level.
AA: Chattanooga 9, Carolina 3
–CF Quintin Berry had two hits, including a double, and knocked in a run. RF Felix Perez also had two hits. 1B Neftali Soto and 2B Cody Puckett each hit solo homers.
–James Avery dropped to 3-6 with the loss. Over 6.2 innings, Avery surrendered 5 runs on 8 hits and a walk. He struck out five.
Lefty reliever Donnie Joseph, a favorite of many in the Reds front office, struggled mightily for the fourth consecutive outing. Joseph pitched one inning, giving up four runs on four hits and a walk. His ERA rose to 10.80. Yikes.
High A: Bakersfield 10, Modesto 8 (12 innings)
–In addition to Yasmani Grandal’s nice game mentioned above, five others had at least two hits for Bakersfield. LF Josh Fellhauer went 3-6 with 3 RBI. SS Brodie Greene went 2-6 with a walk. DH Stephen Hunt was 2-5 with a walk. 1B Chris Richburg was 2-5 with a walk. Finally, 2B Jose Gualdron was 2-5 with two runs scored.
–Not much to mention on the pitching front, except that there were two holds and two blown saves. Sounds like an exciting game, huh? It was; Modesto scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, and then each team scored in the tenth. Finally, Bakersfield pushed two across in the top of the twelfth on a sac fly and a bases-loaded walk (okay, that ending wasn’t as exciting as it could have been).
Low A: Lake County 6, Dayton 3
–RF Theo Bowe was the only Dragon with multiple hits, going 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored out of the ninth spot in the order.
2B Billy Hamilton stole three more bases, giving him 37 on the year. Wonder if he is collecting his batting gloves and nailing them to the wall in his apartment?
–Pat Doyle took the loss, going 2.2 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks. Righty Daniel Wolford finished up with 2.2 scoreless innings, striking out 5.
