Let’s recap tonight’s titanic struggle….
WP: Lopez (6-14)
LP: Volquez (3-3)
S: Gutierrez (10)
–Jonny Gomes had a couple of hits, including a double, and is showing signs of a hot streak. That would be nice, because his cold streak has lasted two and a half months.
–Edinson Volquez had one bad inning, but he was pretty effective overall. Volquez went six and two thirds, giving up three runs on six hits. He struck out seven and walked two. Certainly a good enough effort to win.
–Excellent work out of the bullpen from Bill Bray, Logan Ondrusek, and Jared Burton. They didn’t allow so much as a baserunner in the final two and a third innings.
–Another listless performance in a string of them. This homestand, and the road trip that preceded it, has been just about the worst stretch of baseball we’ve seen from our guys all season long.
–The Reds head out now for their final road trip of the season.
–Edinson Volquez is more consistent, and is throwing more strikes, since returning from his minor league adventure.
–Jim Edmonds pinch-hit, his first at-bat in a while.
–Welcome back, Jared Burton. I don’t know why you’ve been away so long. You’ve irritated someone in a position of power in this organization, evidently.
