Let’s recap tonight’s titanic struggle….
WP: Hudson (6-1)
LP: Wood (5-3)
S: Gutierrez (9)
–Orlando Cabrera had two hits, and scored Cincinnati’s only run. Sam LeCure and Aaron Harang combined for four innings of one-hit relief; three of those innings were LeCure’s.
–Reds couldn’t buy a hit tonight. Daniel Hudson was magnificent.
–Brandon Phillips is struggling right now. It’s time for Chris Valaika to start a game or two at second base.
–In the ninth inning, Jonny Gomes came to the plate with runners on the corner. Gomes represented the tying run. He proceeded to have the worst at-bat I’ve seen in weeks. Just brutal. I actually feel sorry for Gomes at this point. He’s playing terribly.
–The Reds were two inches from winning this game. In the bottom of the ninth, the Reds loaded the bases, down 3-0. First, Drew Stubbs is hit by a pitch, scoring Cabrera. Then Ramon Hernandez hits a frozen rope to right field, and Juston Upton made a very good play to catch the ball. If that ball had been two inches over, Upton wouldn’t have been able to reach it, and there’s no doubt in my mind that Stubbs would have come around from first to score the winning run.
–Reds miss a chance to add a game to their lead, because it looks like the Cardinals are going to lose again. St. Louis has quit.
–Something wasn’t right with Sam LeCure as he walked off the field. He finished that eighth inning, but the trainer had to come out to talk to him. We’ll wait to see what the problem was.
–Homer Bailey takes the mound tomorrow evening.
