Tip of the cap to Francisco Cordero, who was nominated as a finalist for the Roberto Clemente Award, which is given every year to a baseball player to recognize his community service efforts. CoCo has been involved with the Reds community fund since 2008, donating money for a new “Urban Baseball Academy” in Cincinnati.

You can vote for CoCo here; voting ends October 8. Evidently, if you vote, you are automatically registered for a chance to win a trip to the 2010 World Series.

All I know about CoCo is this: when he was going terribly and Reds fans were calling for his scalp, Cordero stood up and took all the heat and blamed no one but himself. We can debate the merits of having him on the roster, especially at his salary, but Cordero has definitely become one of my favorites, just by the way he conducts himself.
