Let’s recap tonight’s titanic struggle….
WP: Leake (8-4)
LP: West (0-2)
S: Cordero (31)
–Mike Leake was not great tonight, but he kept the Reds in the game, earning the ever-dubious “quality start.” Six innings, 3 runs, 6 hits, 6 strikeouts, 3 walks. If nothing else, Leake stopped the recent bleeding he’d been experiencing. Plus, he ripped a ball in the fourth for a single that drove in a run.
–Paul Janish had only one hit, a double, but he got an RBI on a great suicide squeeze in the fourth inning. It was a tough pitch to bunt, but Soft-J got it down. Oh yeah, he also played outstanding defense, in case you were wondering.
–Joey Votto was the only Red with two hits, both singles. Votto’s second hit was crushed off the wall; I think everyone thought it was a homer.
–Drew Stubbs simply launched a ball into the second deck in the 8th for a mammoth homer. That’s fifteen on the year for him.
–Nick Masset got his ERA under 4 for the first time all year with two decent innings.
–That’s two wins for Chris Speier as manager.
–Yet another baserunning mishap, as Joey Votto was waved home by third base coach Mark Berry, only to be gunned down at the plate. That could have been an important run.
–CoCo…sheesh. Good thing Stubbs hit that homer in the bottom of the eighth, because Cordero tried to blow the game; he gave up a hit, two walks, and a run in the ninth. Of course, he got the save, proving yet again why the save statistic is a complete joke.
–With the St. Louis loss earlier today, the Reds are back into a virtual tie for first place. I thought the season was over after the Cardinals series? It only took Cincinnati two games to climb back into first.
–Perhaps I’m just reading too much into his body language, but Mike Leake looks exhausted to me. Maybe it was just the heat tonight.
–Mike Leake can hit.
–Thom Brennaman broke his leg while on vacation near San Diego. He was wakeboarding for the first time. Get well soon, Thom!
–Homer Bailey makes his return tomorrow. Here’s my prediction: Chris Heisey is going to get demoted to make room for Bailey.
