Let’s recap tonight’s titanic struggle….
WP: Volquez (3-1)
LP: Johnson (10-5)
–Good start by Edinson Volquez: 6 innings, 8 hits, 1 run, 6 K, 2 BB. At times, he looked electric. The old Edinson is coming back, slowly but surely.
–Scott Rolen was 3-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and a fantastic slide into home that plated an early run.
–Four other Reds had two hits: Brandon Phillips, Laynce Nix, Joey Votto (2 RBI), Jay Bruce (3 RBI).
–Bruce also hit his first homer since June 30 — against a lefty, no less. He really looked good at the plate tonight. Let’s hope he’s starting to turn it around.
–The baserunning was awful tonight. Just bad.
–The Reds pounded All-World pitcher Josh Johnson into submission tonight; he couldn’t even make it out of the fourth inning. Great way to bounce back from the St. Louis debacle.
–Feels so good to get a win, after spending an off-day stewing over the Cardinals series. As a matter of fact, I couldn’t have scripted tonight’s game any better.
–Jim Edmonds went 0-4; he’s now 0-9 as a Red.
–Dusty Baker served the first game of his two-game suspension tonight. Johnny Cueto also announced he wasn’t going to appeal his suspension; Homer Bailey will make Cueto’s Sunday start.
–Let’s enjoy this one!
