Sundays off

There was some discussion yesterday on the game thread and overnight on the Recap about Dusty’s decisions to give players Sundays off. There was at least one comment that felt this was a common occurrence with the Reds this year…so I thought I’d take a look.

I’m not sure one can draw any conclusions from the data, but it does seem apparent that Dusty feels that a) we’re getting to the point of the season where players need more time off and b) that he tends to give Rolen Sunday off fairly often.

My biggest question is…and I admit I didn’t look at this…what would this table look like if you include Saturday games? Are any regulars being rested on Saturday or is Sunday the “day of rest”? Rather than giving multiple players Sunday off, is it being spaced out during the rest of the week?

I don’t believe this team has the offensive firepower to survive (especially against a good pitcher, like yesterday) with two starters out of the lineup. Did Rolen need two days off in a row? If not, couldn’t he have played yesterday and still had today off?

Just thought it might be worth discussing on an off day…
