26 year-old Matt Maloney (Phillies Rd 3 – 2005) chucked the pill for 6 innings, giving up 2 ER on 5 H and 2 BB while striking out 7. In 2 starts this year, Matt has a 2.31 ERA in 11.2 IP, giving up 11 H, 3 BB and he has struck out 15. 

24 year-old Todd Frazier (1st Rd – 2007) went 1-2 with a HR, 2 BB and 2 RBI.  Frazier, playing 3rd base, has struggled this year so far hitting just (.120/.267/.280) in 25 ABs.

24 year-old second baseman Chris Valaika (3rd Rd – 2006) went 2-4 with a 3B and a R.  Vailaka has started strong in this young season hitting (.300/.364/.400) 24 ABs.

24 year-old shortstop Kris Negron (Red Sox 7th Rd – 2006) went 2-3 with a 2B, 2 R, and a BB.  After 24 ABs this season, Kris is hitting a very patient (.250/.400/.333)

23 year-old center fielder Dave Sappelt (9th Rd – 2008) went 2-4. In 24 ABs this year, Dave is hitting (.292/.370/.375)

Fort Wayne 5, Dayton 4

20 year-old shortstop DiDi Gregorius (undrafted FA – 2008) continued his hot hitting by going 2-4, with a HR, R, RBI and a BB.  Didi — who is DOTF’s favorite Dutch-born Reds farmhand — is now hitting (.316/.458/.605). Wow, let’s hope he can keep this up!

23 year-old right fielder Andrew Means (11th Rd – 2008) went 3-5 with 2 R, and an RBI.  Means, from Indiana University, is now hitting (.355/.364/.452) in 31 ABs.

21 year-old starting pitcher Brian Pearl (9th Rd – 2009) tossed 5 innings giving up 2 ER on 6 H and 0 BB with 4 Ks.   Last year in his first year of pro ball, Pearl threw 23.2 innings with a 3.79 ERA with 43 Ks; that is 13.5 Ks per 9!
