Are you watching the League Championship Series’? Game one of the NLCS was pretty exciting last night. I expect the ALCS to be equally dramatic.

Obviously, not a lot going on with the Reds right now (other than Steve’s latest alphabet game), so here’s an open thread. Talk amongst yourselves.

Sad to say, but I’ve hardly watched a pitch of the playoffs to this point. When the Reds aren’t playing my interest falls off quickly.

i am following the playoffs. rooting for a phillies/angels WS. get those Stankees and scum dodgers out of the playoffs. plus tired of yankees seemingly needing a key horribly blown ump call in a game 2 to basically seal the deal for them.

I was glad to see Red Sox swept out as well. if its dodgers/yankees WS, I wont watch. same thing when it was yanks/Mets a few years back(2000?), the old NY hype thing was sickening and the media wondered why ratings were so bad.

Well, since my comment posted the other day seems to have been deleted from another thread, I’ll repost it here and hopefully it will stick.

Rudy Jaramillo announced that he will not be returning as the Rangers’ hitting coach. This is a guy that has had rave reviews from everyone in MLB. Mark DeRosa hired him as a private hitting instructor this past off season. In my opinion, the Reds should actively pursue Jaramillo to replace Brook Jacoby, who, by most accounts on this site, is not a great hitting coach. I’d like to see what a talented hitting coach could do with the likes of Jay Bruce, Drew Stubbs and some of the other young studs we have.

And though it’s not likely, could you imagine a staff of LaRussa, Duncan, and Jaramillo? Sick.

Ah, I stand corrected! I thought I had violated the TOS but I just wasn’t paying attention. 😳

This is the probably the better thread to further this discussion anyway. Sorry if I came off as a jerk! – not intended.

Looking forward to an Angels/Phillies series myself, and uncustomarily I am hoping the Angels take it all (i’m almost always a National League guy). I really, really like the way Anaheim plays the game. Lots of first to third, the lineup from 1-7 is sick, and it really is a high powered National league team playing in the American.

  6. RC

I’m watching as much as I can. Love me some playoff baseball, and I’m depressed when it’s over. I’m hanging on to Summer for dear life…

Don’t have anybody I’m rooting strongly for, and only one team I’m rooting against. But yeah, Phillies/Angels sounds like a fun one.

@preach: Abreu was a real good pickup for the Angels. Helped deepen thier lineup with a high RBI & OBP guy. He still seems solid in OF, plays 150+ games, steal some bases. Heck of a hitter. I was surprised Cubs did not get Abreu instead of Bradley. He would have been perfect to bat perfect between Lee and Aramis. Glad they were not that smart. Wow, looking at the Angels lineup, every starter 100+(100-135) in OPS+.

what are they thinking, cloggin the bases like that. 🙄

  8. preach

@doktor: Yeah, they do mash. And look at how they can run as a team. I guess the havoc they generate makes up for any base clogging. But how they can lead off Figgins without starting him in CF is a mystery….

  9. Dan

Reds and Brewers completed the Weathers trade. Out of all of their choices, the Reds opted for… $$$.

    Go team.

  10. Dan

Doug Gray is hearing rumors the Reds are basically broke. Oy.

Makes those $10-million-plus contracts to our “over-30” crowd (Arroyo, Harang, Cordero, Rolen) look monumentally stupid. Say we’re a $70 million team next year. If one of those big-contract guys gets hurt, then we’re essentially a $60 million team. Two get hurt, we’re a $50 million team…

You really need to be SO careful with those big contracts. If you’re not sure that guy is going to be productive and healthy, it’s just a HUGE risk to take (unless you’re willing to take on a $200 million payroll like you-know-who).

🙁 I turn the volume off and watch off and on. Seems to me the Best Team Money Can Buy will win it all.

  12. mike

ex-Red scores gets a leadoff single for the Yanks in extra innings of a 5+ hour game in the rain and cold and scores the winning run

and Redsfanx, I listened to one inning of these fools during the playoffs, turned the sound off and it hasn’t gone back on. The second one of them said “called ball, up in the zone” when the ball was low and outside I said forget it.

  13. doktor

i understand trying to ignore the annoucers but turning off the sound loses too much of the “environment”, the buzz of the crowd, the crack of bat that all make up part of the game to me.

dang yankees, get another break to win a game. and playing games in that type of weather is silly. between the crazy spread out scheduling and playing games at night, it just does not do baseball justice to allow the talent to succeed on the field.

  14. doktor

@Dan: regarding big reds salaries, i still think the reds made right moves on Harang and Bronson. They needed anchors for the staff when they had not had any for a few years. Regarding Rolen and Cordero, seemed not a smart thing to do given the Reds situation.

I absolutely agree about these games in freezing weather not showing the best MLB has to offer.
Dodgers / Phils starting at 8 tonight is plain stupid. 🙄

I guess (like everything else) it has to do with TV advertising dollars. 👿

  16. pinson343

I had a strong feeling Hairston would get a hit and score the winning run.

I can’t believe they’ve moved the postseason back even further. Bud “Integrity” Selig sucks.

The Yankees bought the WS during the off-season, makes it all seem kind of boring. Because it is boring.

  17. doktor

Phillies just shelled the dodgers last night. be nice if that happened again tonight and put dodgers in a big hole, having to face Hamels Wednesday.

angels need weaver to go strong tonight. dang yankees.

pinson343, i understand your sentiment, does not seem its even for all teams in getting talent where $$$ is not an issue. Not many teams have the offensive depth to lose a guy like Nady and have Swisher sitting on the bench to step in. but on the other hand, the yankees “plan” has not worked the last several years so I still hold out hope for the angels.
    🙂

Payroll currently in the playoffs: $529 million
Payroll of our Reds: $74 million
Value of seeing Dusty’s stupid lineups: priceless

  19. Dan

What are the 4 payrolls, Mike? Are they all way up there? They must be…

  20. mike

Dan: What are the 4 payrolls, Mike? Are they all way up there? They must be…

    payroll rank
    #1 NYY
    #6 Angels
    #7 Philly
    #9 LA
    #19 Reds

interestingly enough 3 of the top 5 didn’t make the playoffs
    The Cubs, Mets, and Tigers

and don’t know how the playoff broadcasts are in the rest of the country but here in the Bay Area I have been shocked that all the playoff games have been shown on TBS EXCEPT the Yanks/Angels which been shown on the local Fox station. Even TV execs don’t care about anybody cept the Yanks

  21. mike

should have read the question closer

    payroll

    in millions
    $202 Yanks
    $114 Angels
    $113 Philly
    $103 LA
    $74 Reds

9 teams in MLB have over $100 million roster payrolls
6 teams in MLB have under $50 million roster payrolls

  22. doktor

the Dodgers are knocked out. WAHOO. what a home run fest by both teams. And former Dodgers, Werth and Victorino leading the way with homers. And LA Times just killing the dodgers.

now if only the Angels can get a 3 games winning streak to knock off those dang yanks.
