Time for a recap of tonight’s titanic struggle….

FINAL
Houston 1
Cincinnati 3
WP: Arroyo (13-12)
LP: Rodriguez (13-10)
S: Cordero (35)
BOX SCORE

POSITIVES
–This Bronson Arroyo may turn out to be a decent pitcher after all. Another fantastic start for the long-hair, going 7 innings, and giving up only 6 hits and one run. He struck out six and walked none. Wow.

–Fortunately, Jay Bruce is back, so Arroyo didn’t get saddled with another loss or no-decision after a good start. Bruce got a pinch-hit, two-run single to right in the 7th that gave the Reds and Arroyo the lead.

–Excellent work by Rhodes, Masset and CoCo out of the pen.

–The Reds only had 7 hits, and no one had more than one, but Brandon Phillips did hit another homer, his 20th.

NEGATIVES
–TOS

–Our manager is clueless. I’m tired — exhausted — of the day-to-day nonsense emanating from the Reds dugout.

–Juan Francisco made his major league debut tonight — that’s actually a positive, as I like the guy the more I see him. But guess what he did in his first AB as a big leaguer? You guessed it. K.

ETC.
–Welcome back, Jay Bruce! Redleg Nation has missed you.

–I’m glad Darnell McDonald is starting every game. It isn’t like the Reds have players they need to evaluate for next year.

–Finally, just because I liked the guy and I didn’t want to retire this image to the dustbin just yet:

I had stuff going on, so I didn’t watch the game.

I’m really glad to see the Red hang a big L on Wandy Rodriquez. That guy has been a pain in the Reds keister the past few years.

    a couple quick odd stats

Who is the all-time Reds HR leader at 2B?
    HOMERUNS HR
    1 Joe Morgan 152
    2 Brandon Phillips 87
    3 Bret Boone 70
    4 Bid McPhee 53
    5 Ron Oester 42
    6 Pete Rose 37
    7 Lonny Frey 36
    8 Alex Kampouris 31
    9 Mariano Duncan 25
    10 Pokey Reese 22

    make that 88 for Phillips

and I really liked the Giants trivia during their game tonight vs Colorado (a game that actually matters, something the Reds haven’t seen in nearly 10 years)

Which Reds (duh, theirs was Giants) pitcher was the last pitcher to win 9 games at home? I’ll go one step further. Either how long has it been since a Reds pitcher has won 9 games at home or who are the last 5 pitchers to win 9 or more games at home. But I’m a geek, so maybe it should be (to make it easy on you) which Reds pitchers has won the most games at the GAG….I mean GABP?

    anways…to the answers
the last 5 Reds pitchers to win 9 or more games at home?
    13 Schourek (1995)
    12 Jackson (1988)
    11 Belcher (1992)
    10 Browning (1991)
    9 Rijo (1991)

and the career leaders (among Reds) in Wins at the GABP?
    32 Harang
    26 Arroyo
    11 Wilson and Weathers
    9 Volquez and Cueto

and the wonder I my mind tonight. Ya think Bruce will start tomorrow or does he need more marination so as to not clog the bases?

I always enjoy a win over the Astros. Other than the Cubs, they’re the division rival I dislike the most.

Against Oswalt, I think Bruce will be in the lineup.
It’s great to have him back. With Bruce, Dickerson, and Nix all on the DL, we had nothing going for LHed bats in the OF. And Nix is coming back soon, he was hot before he got hurt, would like to see if he can pick up where he left off.

Even against LH pitching, there’s no need for McD in the lineup, it’s not as if he’s in the plans for 2010. (It seems he’s in Dusty’s plan though.)
Dusty has been mad at Balentien ever since the game WB struck out twice with a runner on 3rd.

Taveras is apparently resuming activities. What are the odds that the Reds say he was silently nursing an injury for all of 2009 and is expected to come back strong in 2010 ?

We won this game with pitching. Arroyo’s value continues to rise, to the Reds and to other teams.
A pitcher who’s better in the 2nd half is not such a bad thing.

Glad that Chad mentions the back end of the bullpen when they save one. Usually those guys only get attention when they blow one.

In the game thread, Chris said: “Francisco called on to pinch hit, with the tying run on 3rd and 0 out. Single or sac fly needed, Barker and Bruce on the bench, and Baker debuts the guy who can’t make contact.”

This was indeed hard to understand. Dusty complains about guys striking out with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs, yet in that situation and with the game on the line, he sends up a guy who struck out 115 times at AA and AAA this year, to make his major league debut by striking out.

It isn’t like the Reds have players they need to evaluate for next year.

Maybe they’re being evaluated as pinch hitters.

Francisco only played LF twice in the minors and those were the 2 Scott Rolen rehab games. When Scott came out of each game, Francisco moved back to 3B.

How many innings will Francisco play in LF in the majors this season?
Who will get the most playing time in LF the rest of the way?

That is exactly what I was going to say. I was screaming at the TV last night when he put in Juan in this circumstance. I don’t know why I still care so much.
