I’m screwing around with a few things tonight, making some changes to how you can comment and how those comments show up. We’ve discussed some of these in this thread, but I thought I’d devote a specific thread to the topic.

What do you like and dislike? Any suggestions or requests?

    just some quick feedback

    I like the like/dislike feature

I also like the date/time stamp on each comment BUT it stands out more that the posters name. The Red is the 1st thing I see. I think the date time stamp in a game thread in particular doesn’t need to stand out that much. Maybe make it black and not read?

Had to disable the “Like/Dislike” feature temporarily. Wasn’t working correctly.

I can change the color of the link. No problem.

  3. Jose

I like the quote feature alot, that will help alot in the future of this site

  4. Chad Dotson

Also, you’ll notice a little “quote” link below comments. I’ll change that to a little icon instead of the text if we keep it, but play around with it.

Do you guys prefer that or the threaded comments? Doesn’t make sense to keep both, since you can’t really use them both at the same time.

  5. Chris

I think I like quote better than threaded comments.

The threads are particularly bad for a game thread, I would think. People would be saying things, but you wouldn’t necessarily see them.

So where do the replies go now? Still indented below? Or at the bottom of this thread?

  6. Chad Dotson

Crap. Hadn’t noticed the banners. Gotta figure out why the old pictures disappeared.

  7. Dan

Dan: So where do the replies go now? Still indented below? Or at the bottom of this thread?

Looks like it’s still indented just under the comment replied to.

  8. Dan

If we’re picking between indented replies (that are attached to the comment replied to) and the quote function (that would put every new comment at the bottom, keeping things chronological), I vote for the quote thing.

I think it’s important to keep everything growing chronologically, or things are going to go unnoticed pretty frequently (I think).

  9. Dan

Chris: New poll should include Kelch.

I agree w/ Chris on this — I’m very curious how this would turn out in the poll.

Kelch is the usual Louisville announcer, right?

    • Dan

How did you do that “@Dan” thing that actually links to my comment? That’s pretty slick.

  10. Chris

Chad, I bought my PS3 via the RLN Amazon store? Hope you got credit for that.

You’re the man. Thanks. Maybe we can keep the lights on here at RN for another month, at least.

  12. Chad Dotson

@Dan: There’s a little “Reply” button in the bottom right of each comment (it shows up when you hover over the comment).

I’m thinking about keeping that and the “Quote” function, and getting rid of the threaded comments.

  13. Dan

@Chad Dotson: Aha! Cool. Thanks. I saw that but didn’t realize it’s a different type of reply than the one at the top.

I like it! And I agree – keep this and ditch the threaded replies.

Dan: So where do the replies go now? Still indented below? Or at the bottom of this thread?

    Same question.

  15. Dan

As a quick aside… this is an unexpectedly popular thread. 😉

  16. Chad Dotson

Does the “Quote” function eliminate the need for comment numbering? I am having a heck of a time figuring out what happened there.

  17. Chad Dotson

I’ve eliminated the threaded replies, for now. Looks like it puts them back in chronological order.

People are going to come along and read this thread and be lost.

  18. brublejr

Chris: New poll should include Kelch.

I would have voted for him…plus he brings out the best in Marty as well.

For me it has…I like this quote thing

  20. Dan

@Chad Dotson: I’d still prefer to have the comment numbers, as a way to casually reference which comment you’re referring to (if you just mention something in passing), but it’s not that big a deal.

  21. Chris

    Me too.

    Yeah, me too.

I’m just computer-literate enough to be dangerous, but apparently not enough of an expert to figure out the solution to this problem. 🙂

  23. Dan

Chad Dotson: Yeah, me too. I’m just computer-literate enough to be dangerous, but apparently not enough of an expert to figure out the solution to this problem.

Maybe Chris can figure it out. He apparently went to William & Mary, after all.

    😉

@Dan: ouch. talk about having little mercy.

My wife is a Browns fan, and we still somehow married, but I flipped on the television and they were interviewing Elway about ‘The Drive’. I turned the TV up just a little louder than usual….

  25. preach

@preach: Now I am talking to myself. Cool.

I do like these new features. Game threads will be interesting.

I’m just playing to see the difference…

Like the quote feature, would prefer not to have threaded comments. Way too hard to catch up on topics you haven’t been following all along. (This is one of the reasons I don’t read comments much at Red Reporter.)

  28. preach

I like the changes but would like to see the comment numbers. It makes it easier to reference without having to quote. sometimes excessive quotes are as “annoying” as “excessive” “quote” “marks”

  29. GRF

Another vote in favor of the comment numbers if possible, but overall like the changes. Should make the longer gamethreads (remember the early season several hundred post ones?) more interesting.

  30. Matt WI

I agree with what appears to be the growing consensus: Keep the quote function, but have all posts appear in order rather than threaded… we’d definitley miss new posts that got put higher up in the discussion. Number ’em if it’s possible. Rock on Redleg Nation, rock on.

  31. RiverCity Redleg

I also agree with the consensus, Quote..yes and thread..no. Plus, I also prefer the numbered comments.
    I can’t figure out the @ feature, I don’t see a “reply” button.

  32. shane

hold your mouse over the reply you are reading and look to the bottom right corner of the post, the “reply” will appear there

  33. GRF

While you are taking requests, is there a way to block the evony ads? This is a family site. 😀

  34. Chris W

    Dan:

Ouch! I am actually surprised Chad is still around to do this website after the Bill and Mary win over UVA.

  35. Chad Dotson

I wish there was something I could say about all this, but I’m a Virginia alum and a Reds fan and I’m used to having my heart broken. So I will accept the jabs.

The good news is that it is becoming increasingly likely that UVa will fire Coach Groh. That has to happen before UVa will improve. He’s a good guy and a hard worker, but he’s not a college coach.

    Sigh….

    🙄

  36. GRF

    preach: ?gnitnemirepxe hcum ooT

Are you referring to the site, or the Reds generally? I would be happier with more experimenting from the latter.

  37. RC

    preach: ?gnitnemirepxe hcum ooT

Sure, I “experimented” in college. Everybody was doing it.

But I swear I’m clean now. Never touch the stuff. Heck, who can afford it?

  38. RiverCity Redleg

shane: hold your mouse over the reply you are reading and look to the bottom right corner of the post, the “reply” will appear there

    It’s not working for me.

  39. Kerm

Hey Chad, This isn’t about the new feature, but I was wondering if there was a way to see comments from my ipod touch/Iphone. I don’t know about other mobile browsers but I can’t get the comments section to work on my ipod touch.

The Bartman Game gets that treatment around here.
