—Ben Jukich, Redleg Nation‘s Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July, took the loss, but he didn’t give up any earned runs over five innings. He did give up 3 unearned runs, 8 hits, and 1 walk, while striking out 6. Jukich is now 7-5 with a 4.04 ERA for the season.
—Danny Dorn, playing 1B, continued his good play. Dorn was the only Bat with more than one hit, going 2-4. On the season, Dorn is hitting .262/.327/.452, which is only good when you consider how poorly he started the season.
West Tennessee 20, Carolina 9 (AA)
–I hesitate to mention the “pitching” but suffice to say that three different pitchers gave up 6 earned runs each. Ouch.
–The hitters scored nine runs, which wasn’t nearly enough. RN Spotlight Player Logan Parker hit the lone homer for the Mudcats, and he also walked twice.
–3B Juan Francisco was the hitting star, with three doubles in five ABs. He scored two runs and drove in two more. Plus, he committed zero errors. For the season, Francisco is hitting .281/.317/.511 with 22 HR and 74 RBI.
–RF Steven Chapman also went 3-5, with a 3B, a run, and an RBI. Chapman, who started the season at Dayton (A), is hitting .229/.289/.457 with 4 HR and 10 RBI in 26 games with Carolina.
–2B Jose Castro (2 RBI) and LF Sean Cumberland (single and a triple) had two hits each.
St. Lucie 3, Sarasota 1 (High-A)
–RHP Lance Janke pitched six shutout innings, scattering only three hits. Janke, drafted in the 14th round in 2008 out of San Diego Christian College, struck out five and walked none. Impressive outing. This was his first start for Carolina; Janke was 5-5 with a 4.06 ERA for Dayton.
–CF Dave Sappelt was the only offensive player of note, going 3-5 in the leadoff spot. Sappelt is hitting .275/.326/.393 combined with Sarasota and Dayton this season.
—Mark Serrano, a 23 year-old right-hander who was drafted in the 6th round of this year’s draft out of Cypress College, gave up only 2 hits over 4.2 innings, striking out four and walking one. He’s 1-0 with a 1.55 ERA in nine games between Billings and Dayton.
–3B Carlos Mendes went 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Mendes is a 22 year-old from Venezuela who is hitting .306/.351/.408 with 4 HR and 49 RBI for Dayton.
–23 year-old 1B Humberto Sosa had two hits, including a double, plus a BB and an RBI, in 3 AB. Sosa is .279/.345/.417 over two levels this year.
–RF Byron Wiley also had two hits, with a BB and 2 runs scored. The 22 year-old Texan is hitting .282/.393/.497 with 11 HR and 55 RBI for Dayton this year.
Billings/Helena (Rookie) postponed (rain).
GCL Reds/GCL Redsox (Rookie) were suspended because of rain with the Sox winning 1-0. The game will be completed as part of a doubleheader today.
